Yes there is a MUST SEE live version of this song. The Midnight Special performance is trimmed down to meet the time requirement for the TV show. Bob Mayo's keyboard solo was omitted, and part of Frampton's "talk box" solo was trimmed down as well but nonetheless a captivating performance.

The Midnight Special one was shortened to fit the program format but they still got a longer time slot than usual to do their song so there is plenty of what makes this song different in there.

@@stevedavis5704 Still fun how Focus decided to play their song Hocus Pocus on the Midnight Special in a faster tempo to complete it within the allowed time frame. The original tempo sounds much better though 🙂

For anyone to say the Midnight Special performance even comes close to the original album version is beyond me. It doesn't suck, but when compared to the original, it sorta does. My friends and I watched that Midnight Special episode when it premiered. We were all disappointed. I mean ... come on , man !!

1976. I'm a senior in high school. I've got a 66 289 Mustang Convertible. I've my best friend, our girlfriends in the car. We are on The PCH, headed to Malibu. This album has been cranking on cassette. The sun is out. Music started in Santa Monica and we will drive until the album ends and then turn around and do it again. For two hours, we are simply gods, above life, above everything. That was a PERFECT DAY! Many more of these days will come that summer. When Frampton came alive and ruled.

The guitar sound that is featured in this solo is that of the talk Box. Frampton kind of made that device famous and everybody started copying him after this recoding. It is basically a tubing piece attached to the microphone stand that is inserted into the mouth of the guitarist. The sound of the guitar goes electronically from the guitar into the talk box, then out through the tubing and into the player's mouth. Moving your mouth around as if you are talking or singing makes it sound like you are talking or singing guitar music. An incredibly ingenious invention. And Peter Frampton was the master.
I have played guitar for 4 decades and Peter Frampton is probably the most perfect guitar player I've ever witnessed in the rock category. He truly does not miss a note. A few years ago I went to one of his shows at our local theater and they sold recordings of that evening's concerts on ACD disk package. It was actually recorded during the show and distributed immediately afterward. It's as perfect as this record. The sound quality and the musicianship was just amazing that night and I feel like I got to be part of this album during that show. The audience makes up such a key part to this whole record.

Peter Frampton is an English rock musician, singer, songwriter & producer. He was previously associated with the bands Humble Pie & The Herd. I had his famous 1976 album "Frampton Comes Alive". His biggest hits are "Show Me The Way," "Baby, I Love Your Way," "Do You Feel Like We Do" & "I'm In You". He was famous for using a talk box in live performances.

Peter Frampton is one of the most melodic and dynamic guitarists there is.
His 'talkbox' work is amazing. Getting the desired results with a talkbox isn't as easy as one would think.

The way the talk box effect works is that the aplified guitar sound is sent through a rubber tube that he puts in his mouth so the guitar tone is shaped by his mouth and sent into the microphone.

OMG, Peter Frampton is the most underrated guitar player on the planet. Ever. His playing is technically obscenely incredible yet so melodic. This live album sold 11 million copies world-wide and was a 70's phenomenon. But... just yesterday my brother and I were complaining that everyone reacts to his live songs, yet his album versions are just as spectacular. I never got a chance to see him live but did catch him running through an airport, with guitar case in hand, when coming home from visiting relatives in Rhode Island. Talk about surprised! His work with Humble Pie was just as good as his solo work. Check out Humble Pie songs Shine On, The Light and Stone Cold Fever and solo work: I've Got My Eyes on You, Wind of Change, his cover of Jumping Jack Flash and his incredible cover of Stevie Wonder's I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever. Frampton is one of the greats!

Thank you for endorsing my point .your endorsement reminds me of a family anecdote that is relevant that I'd like to retell. I'm a 63 year old retired attorney and amateur hobbyist guitarist. My late parents were of the WWII generation and loved Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and big band music. My late father loved jazz( e.g.Miles Davis : I love his stuff too, btw) . My Dad was(like me) an amateur musician .A major difference between us was that he HATED rock music with a few exceptions like The Beatles . " Would you please turn that S--T off" was a refrain heard often in our apartment in the Bronx during. my teenage and post-college life.
However, my father absolutely loved the FCA album and loved listening to it with my 🎧 on.whenever I wasn't around He could never stop raving about how good a guitarist Peter Frampson ( sic) was .btw
My father also loved Emmylou Harris; proof that he had impeccable music taste .We saw an Emmylou Harris concert together at the Beacon Theater decades ago and had a wonderful time.

That my friend, is a "Talk Box". The guitar goes into a speaker driver. The output goes out a tube you put in your mouth. Your head becomes the "speaker", and a microphone near your mouth picks up the sound. You "mouth" the words as you play guitar (don't sing). Works really well on vowel sounds. If you don't do it a lot it is a strange experience as your skull is a speaker.

When Frampton was playing for the recording of George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass," he was chatting with one of the other guys and was able to borrow from him a talk box, the same talk box which had been lent to Joe Walsh for "Rocky Mountain Way." After playing with it for a bit, he figured out how to incorporate it. Other bands used the talk box in hit songs, but for some reason everybody associates it with Frampton and this song. You can watch Frampton perform this on "The Midnight Special," which often shortened performances to fit the alotted time. While this version you just listened to is the best audio, it's worth watching the performance too. It seems to me I've seen concert footage of him as well, from when this was recorded. That might be out there.

Oh my gosh ... I totally forgot about this song! Ok, I've found your classic rock reactions and my teenage/young adult memories are flooding back!
Great concert! July 30, 1979, New Haven, CT 😂

I saw a show of the tour in support of this live album in Tulsa. It was an all day festival of Santana, Gary Wright and of course Frampton as the headliner. It's one of the most memorable days of music I've had in many shows over the years. Glad to see so many people are still enjoying the brilliance that this live album is and was.

This album was released in January of 1976, and I saw him live in June of 1976 in Philadelphia shortly after graduating highschool. I was 17.
Saw him many many times since, most recently several years ago in Charleston, SC. He's since stopped performing due to Inclusion Body Myositis which affects muscles.
I cannot stress enough how MASSIVE this album was. Stratospheric.
Throughout the course of his career, he got better and better, if that's even possible.

Great reaction. I was lucky enough to see Frampton in June 1977 at Philadelphia's JFK Stadium. I was 16 years old. The lineup that day was J. Giles Band, Dick Betts & Great Southern, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Frampton was the headliner. He was huge. All the acts were incredible. Its a concert experience I'll never forget. Thanks for the memory.

I remember going to a party and there was a band there back when the album very first came out. I was talking to one of the guys. I bragged..."I've got Frampton's new album, "Frampton Comes Alive!" The shocked expressions, and the "Are you for real?"....I had to drive several miles home and back to get it. I was da bomb that night! I heard one song, "Lines On My Face," just once and immediately bought the album!
I'm in Australia, what everyone says is absolutely correct. It was HUUUUUUUGE!

I used to have a morning show on a classic rock station in central Missouri, KFBD B98 FM. This was a favorite song of mine (& all DJ's). This was my main "bathroom" song. Any time I needed to use the restroom during my show, I would put this on because 1) it's a killer song, and 2) it was over 14 minutes long. Plenty of time to take care of your business and get back in time for the next song/commercial break/news/etc etc ad infinitum. Ahhh, youth...good times!

I saw Peter Frampton 3 or 4 times when he was playing with Ringo Starr and His All-Star Band. It was cool because they would play Ringo's hits plus the hits of the various all-stars who were playing with him. Peter was bald by then but still played the guitar incredibly. The Midnight Special had him on and it's a pretty good live version.
