  • Nonsense about Jamaica DEBUNKED by a foreigner living in Jamaica. The ONE thing to know when planning a trip to JAMAICA is that this country has been misrepresented in the media probably more than any other country in the world.
It was bad enough with Television, but with the rise of social media it got only worse. For example, there is a video, called "10 Things NOT To Do In Jamaica" produced by a youtube channel Destination Tips. I would have ignored that video, but it has over 300 thousand views and ranks #1 on youtube for things not to do in Jamaica. However, the things they mention in the video are a lot of nonsense that has nothing to do with reality. That is why I took the time to deconstruct and debunk the information presented in that video and give some real tips about visiting Jamaica!

What do you think - should we make such videos with a goal to debunk nonsense about Jamaica? If you agree, list other videos or articles that misrepresent Jamaica and let's see if we can deconstruct and debunk them! Here is an example:

One helpful thing would be travel rates. Taxis, route taxis, private drivers, rent a car or scooter pros and cons etc,
Many people get ripped off paying like ten dollars US for a two minute ride when it would cost way less if they knew.

IRINA, the below is what I think (we also want you to be balanced in your review or assessment of Jamaica). I feel like I give a very measured and balanced response below (some Jamaicans won't agree with me; they know why, though):
The thing is that Jamaica is not even the worst in the Caribbean when it comes to local-on-local crime. In fact, Puerto Rico and Jamaica have almost the same level of crime index, according to World Population Review. No body talks about that! The countries with the worst crime indices in the Caribbean are Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana (Guyana is culturally Caribbean and part of CARICOM). Jamaica and Puerto Rico are 3rd and 4th respectively, with both Countries almost having the same crime index. Dominican Republican and Costa Rico are not far from Jamaica and Puerto Rico, either, in terms of crime index, with both countries coming in at 5th and 6th respectively. What is also interesting is that Fiji, a very popular tourist destination for the well-to-do travelers, many from the U.S., has a crime index almost similar to that of Jamaica, the DR, and Puerto Rico, and we never hear anyone mentions their crime rate/index.
Furthermore, Jamaica is one of the safer countries in the Caribbean for tourists as it is next to non-existent when it comes to crime against tourists in Jamaica. Their point would make sense if crime against tourists (out of the near-5 million who visit annually) was at an alarming level, or close to even 0.5%. The source I checked has crime against tourists in Jamaica at less that 0.1% or close to non-existent.
The 10 countries with the highest crime rates in the world for 2020:
      Venezuela (84.49)
      Papua New Guinea (81.93)
      South Africa (77.49)
      Afghanistan (76.23)
      Honduras (76.11)
      Trinidad and Tobago (73.19)
      Brazil (68.88)
      Peru (68.15)
      El Salvador (67.96)
      Guyana (67.66)
      Source:
      worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/crime-rate-by-country
This doesn't mean that Jamaica doesn't have many social ills, nor should we try to deflect from the reality of high levels of crime in Jamaica, especially gang-related and local-on-local crimes, by pivoting to other countries' crime rates. In fact, Jamaica needs to work on the violence in the country as I am a staunch believer in the theory, or fact rather, that crime cripples an economy, especially one that is dependent on tourism, services, and foreign direct investment, and thus throw the country further into abject poverty. As well, many Jamaicans need to work on their discipline and seemingly insufferable aggressive attitude. Therefore, I believe that there is some kernel of truth, though wildly incorrect, in the UA-camr's video and foreigners' perception of Jamaica/Jamaicans.
The same goes for LGBTQ+ rights in Jamaica. Jamaica continues to hold onto archaic and discriminatory laws- laws that specifically discriminate against and target LBGTQ+ Jamaicans- that are a colonial vestige. Locals (I was born and raised in Jamaica so I know) continue to discriminate against and physically attack LGBTQ+ Jamaicans. A recent Gleaner Anderson poll (done in 2020) found that over 90% of Jamaicans support the so-called buggery law and want the law to continue to proscribe same-sex relationships/intimacy (try to imagine a poll done in the U.S. where a staggering 90-98% of "White" Americans, for example, support a law that enslaves African-Americans. Would you want to live in that country?). And before anyone comes at me in the comments, the "prides" that they have in Jamaica are not really like pride celebrations you'd see in the U.S., Brazil, Canada, for example, where people freely express themselves. The exact locations of these events are kept secret and only disclosed to a very few people, or to those who have been vouched for (I have been to one of these pride events in Jamaica, helped coordinate the events, and have sat on panel discussions about LGBTQ+ issues in Jamaica). The "flash mobs", usually heavily secured and not exactly organized, are not a sign of one being able to be free. Besides, having pride celebrations doesn't mean that it is safe for LGBTQ+ people. An example of the foregoing is Brazil, where violence against LGBTQ people in that country, especially trans people, is widespread. In addition, seeing a few "LGBTQ-looking" people in the streets, especially in tourist areas or on major thoroughfares, is not a sign that things are easy for LGBTQ+ Jamaicans. With that said, Jamaica has come a far way as it concerns LGBTQ+ issues: the private citizens, with the help of social media, local and international advocacy/pressure, and LGBTQ+ visibility, have become more sensitized, and thus more tolerant, to LGBTQ+ people and issues. Still, the country has a very far way to go.

Stayed at friends homes overnight, in a non gated or grilled home and I’ve never felt unsafe in Jamaica, in fact everyone has done nothing but extend kindness and friendship. I feel a lot more unsafe in North America then I ever will on Jamaica.

The sad thing is, some of these "experts advisers" lived in very violent cities in their countries, yet they feel the need to criticize other people's country. I believe it's that "third world" ideology of the Caribbean, Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa that these travel sites have of those regions listed above. I never really listen to them because some of them never even visit the Caribbean, yet they tried to convince travelers by sitting in front of a computer typing and click away expressing nothing but bull***t. Thanks Irina, I wish all those 300.000 people would be aware of these so-call travel sites.

Even when people making videos with the very best intentions, like backpacking Simon or Ras Kitchen, the image of Jamaica "poor country, everybody smokes weed, living in huts" gets out there and that's exactly what people think of Jamaica. When my friends saw photos of me hanging out with my Jamaican friends in Montego Bay in a regular community (it was in Rhyne Park) they couldn't believe these were houses in Jamaica. And these are not even the nicest houses - just a regular housing scheme, built by the government, not a gated area 🤷‍♀️ People thought i was lying and that was some community for extra rich people 🙄

Even now, that I'm in my forties, people behave as though, because I'm from Jamaica, or the Caribbean. I shouldn't look the way I look, speak the way I speak, or present myself, the way I present myself. Jamaica is even more safer for tourist than locals. I live in kingston and can attest to that. Yes crime here is an issue but its still a very desirable destination to be. Also ive heard of hotels warning their guests not to venture outside the hotel grounds alone especially at night😂😂😂 i know its a sham to get their guests to buy from only where the tour bus take them and spend money at the designated attractions. Also, they know jamaicans are super friendly towards tourists and thry dont want the guests to make friends with locals. Once a friendship is established the guest is liable to come back abd stay with their friends as supposed to a pricey hotel.

We did however have an excellent couple of drivers for our stay, and we frequently asked them to take us to bars off the tourist trap, or where they drank. My favorite experience was visiting a tiny roadside bar in Sheffield, (Paradise Bar, if you are in the Negril area, make a visit) the owner of the bar, Verona, arrived whilst we were there and offered to show all 4 of us the sunset from her house in the hills. this was an unbelievable gesture on her behalf and what a view she had from her house! We tried not to spend money at the hotel complex, but to spend outside. Local people are just trying to make a living, there is no social benefits of any kind, like in European countries, treat them with respect and kindness and you will get the same, if not more, back. We are already planning our next visit. cant wait. Keep up the good work.

But with that being said Jamaicans dont like arrogance, disrespect especially people who act like they are better than others. So as long as you stay humble and be respectful and aware of your surroundings you will have a great experience. Wow!! Thanks Irina, the ( "Jamaican Angel") once again looking out for us! That video, was horrible, I agree. What I got out of it was, basically if you don't have logic, critical thinking or common sense then you don't need to be traveling anywhere. The Jamaican Tourism Council, needs to hire you, for real! Now tell us about the 'dogs' situation in Jamaica. I heard there are a lot of strays??? I am extremely afaid of dogs in general, what can I expect? (types of, areas, leash-laws, ownership, rabid...etc.???)

    • @JAMAICAWITHIRIE
      @JAMAICAWITHIRIE  3 роки тому +6

The situation with dogs in Jamaica - depends where you go. It's very expensive to neuter dogs, so dog owners can't afford that, as a result - when puppies are born - they just leave them out somewhere, hoping other people will pick them up, but nobody does - that's where stray dogs come from. Most stray dogs are afraid of humans though.. and Jamaica is one of the rare countries that has no rabies. We work on helping to solve the situation with dogs, but it is a difficult task.

Irie, I think we should really get the petition going...
You have done more positive things for this country than some, vlogs who is going with the Flo.., to uplift this country and to make us see things from a different perspective which is refreshing.
If we are not content in our present situation we find ourselves in, we will always be searching for greener pastures when all along it’s at our doorstep. Also, there is good and bad in every country and we are blessed. So instead of pulling out the “tears” that’s preventing the “wheats” from growing, we should let them grow together until the day of harvest....(not quite since we can’t just do nothing when things are getting out of control...
I have come across some vlogs and it seems as if the motivation is to highlight every negative situation and it’s done maliciously . So I surmise that if you leave Jamaica to live elsewhere and years after you come to realize that many Jamaicans are living better than...
    Then comes the upstaging.

    • @JAMAICAWITHIRIE
      @JAMAICAWITHIRIE  3 роки тому +2

Thank you for sharing - I'd really want to know what kind of vlogs you've come across that highlight every negative situation? Do you remember any examples? I'd appreciate them! The things is Jamaicans have been told that Jamaica is a poor country with crime everywhere for so many years, that people never bother to check anymore. Jamaican media doesn't help, because crime stories sell well. Anyway, I will certainly make a video explaining the layers of this situation.. maybe it will help somebody..

Nice video! I am glad I never watched the other video for sure. It is really amazing some of the claims made on the other video. Personally I have found the police helpful to keep tourists out of some local areas or at least ask if they knew there way around downtown at night. Yes I never found a beach In Mandeville and even in Negril with almost Seven miles of beach, is not all beach for sure. As far as backpacks I usually don’t wear them around so much as I did think they would be a target but I also don’t want to look like a tourist when I visit anyways. As far as walking by tourist shops such as the Hip strip in MoBay I know that whether I look at the vendor or not they will hail me up. But sometimes if you don’t look they won’t because they see that you are not browsing. It is also polite to say ‘ I’ll check you later’ but remember they will hold you to that so be true. I also thought it was considerate but funny that the criminals they showed were white on a country that is what , over ninety percent black and the lighter skinned (hence the popular ‘bleaching’ madness) are usually the ones with no need to rob anyone. I would not be surprised if the other video was funded by all inclusive resorts with they’re own agenda. Keep the tourists here and we keep their money here. All that said, Jamaicans in my experience are some of the warmest and kindest in the world And you represent them as one of them. A true yardie seen!
    Thanks for another great video!

Most Jamaicans have families with properties in the countryside and could actually build their own homes but are being pushed into these crowded gated communities.
