It's certainly much easier to talk about the positive things. However, I don't want to be one sided and blamed for hiding away from the difficult topics. Just because I love Jamaica it doesn't mean it's perfect. Yet, every single imperfection makes Jamaica .. Jamaica. In the last few days so many people subscribed to my channel because they enjoyed the video on 10 reasons I love Jamaica... Thank you SO MUCH for the support and so many kind words! And I sincerely hope this video will NOT disappoint you. 🙏

With this video I simply spoke of the everyday problems we experience in Jamaica. What you had to go through is way beyond what can be called "a problem". Your situation is a tragedy and a serious one. Unfortunately, you are not alone - hundreds of children all around the world (both: girls and boys) had to go through sexual abuse and it is not related to any country in particular, but directly related to some horrendous people. Have you tried finding professional psychological help?

When Jamaicans went to Britain on the WIndrush 1948 they had a hard time but they settled en Masse in Brixton and started buying up every house in the borough., I was invited to a house party in Brixton by a friend and the music was loud. The Cops came to the door at around midnight and said that the neighbours were complaining about the noise. My host told the Cops that nobody is complaining about the noise because Jamaicans own every house on the street.

We as Jamaican overseas talk about the same problems in Jamaica all the time BUT what I like about your video is that you actually discuss the issues that brought about these problems in the first place.
They say for every action there is a reaction... we could turn the saying around ... every behavior is caused because of a problem... and these issues are not unique to just Jamaica, it’s the same across the whole world.
I’ve tried to analyzed the cause for many of the issues myself and concluded that it’s unfair to compare a relaxed and laidback, warm island, to a cold(most of the time) fast paced, working all time place, such as the US.

#7 Classism is real. You should have been more specific and don't be shy and hide the truth. As a Jamaican, classism in Jamaica, is well-to-do black people looking down on less fortunate black people. Even in our political system.

    • @JAMAICAWITHIRIE
      @JAMAICAWITHIRIE  4 роки тому +35

yes, it's true, but I need to study this deeply before I can talk more about it. This problem is not as simple as the "rich" hate the "poor" and vice versa. There are a lot of layers, and it's VERY difficult to give a balanced, well-researched information about the situation, since its origins are in 400 years of slavery and in how exactly this "class system" got established after the abolition of slavery. I do want to get into this problem in detail eventually when I understand it better!

@@JAMAICAWITHIRIE This Class system is common among all cultures and communities. It is no different in Jamacia than any other. Just because slavery was abolished means nada when the 'have and the have nots' bump heads. The origin of the class system, please, is not Jamacian. Every country on earth has this hierachy issue and always will. Can you imagine what American black folk had to endure after slavery was over here? All kinds of craziness and we still deal with that garbage daily amidst the toxicity of not even being considered 'human' and equal to some. Yes, its alive and well. Please don't 'study' us, sick of being under the microscope and this class stuff has been earthly since man has been created. We know the deal..

@@JAMAICAWITHIRIE In Jamaica classism and colorism go hand in hand. Take a general look at what Uptown versus Downtown people in Kingston look like. Take a look at what most wealthy Jamaicans look like. Yes, the residuals of slavery, colonialism / white supremacy are real. Lucky you. You get to be in Jamaica and enjoy privileges that many native Jamaicans will never enjoy just because of the colour of your skin.

      forthcoming and transparent viewpoint.
Irie, I was also apprehensive about the contents of this video, but being a champion of objectivity, I had to own up to the unpleasant aspects of our (your Jamaica as well) beloved country along with the endearing ones. You stated facts that we can attest to, and you did so without malice or ill-intent.
Whether you asked for it or not, you are as much an ambassador of Jamaica as I am. Continue to present the things that makes us uniquely Jamaican as you had indicated in the video, and in the dignified manner you have.
A humble request: delve into some of our other cultural aspects if you haven't already, such as the Maroons, visit the Blue Mountains (spend some time with a Rastafarian commune while you're there), go to Port Royal (talk about history!). Port Royal is also a most popular spot for seafood dining (fresh off the boat fish and etc.), it is a favored venue among locals and a growing number of guests. Do something on our amazing Cockpit Country, go rafting on the Rio Grande, Rio Minho, or Rio Bueno. The exciting Black River safari tour is a must, do the rare luminescent waters at night out in western Jamaica. We have a vast network of cave systems and aquifers. Check out other islands within the archipelago, there are 28 or so of them. Go to Devon House in Kingston. Thanks for indulging me.

@@JAMAICAWITHIRIE Irie I will watch the recommended video because I didn't see it.
There are 2 spots of the same restaurant on Port Royal. One is an enclosed space that looks like someone's house from the outside. The other location is at the end of a short block by the police station. This location is many times bigger and therefore more patronized. I recommend going with company to pass the time because you are likely to wait to be seated and for the meal to be served. However, if you like seafood as much as I do, it is worth the wait. The food is fresh off the fishermen's boats from Port Royal and other port towns like Port Henderson and Rae Town. The food is very good. The name is GLORIA'S. They're both dine-in facilities but choose the bigger one. It is closer to the sea, very close actually, and the atmosphere is nicer. There is an upstairs dining area above the kitchen, and there is ground level space set up under a large tent.

I loved your clear and concise delivery and your realistic assessment of the Fear of crime. However I think your assessment of Classism and Racism needs to be more nuanced. Our Colonial past has always linked Class and Race and still exists today. For example as a black professional in the tourism heartland of Jamaica, I found it a challenge at times competing with other recently arrived white expatiates with less experience than I, in the market-place. Black and white clients seemed to assume that these expatiates were better. Ok I overcame these difficulties: but why should we have to face such biases in the first place. Note, however, I'm originally from a developing country, called Ukraine.

You are spot on with the information very thorough research, you put forward the information in a subtle way as to not bash the country in the process i appreciate that.

You are so eloquent, clear and fair in your assessment. I find many people, not just expats are black and white, good and bad. I have traveled and live din many countries and like you, I see nuances. I think you love Jamaica and are happy because you dont make rash judgments and blanket statements. You also know how to navigate the system. Great blog!

You are spot on lady! If the egotistical politicians look at your analysis of these problems, solutions wouldn’t come overnight, but over time. Although most of those in charge are so called educated, they still suffer from the residues of colonialism. They are not new and independent thinkers so they cannot even begin to think like you! Those problems and solutions will only begin to resolve when Jamaica go back to the drawing board with a new breed of thinkers.

    She is soooooooooo Right
I am Jamaican and having this external point of view is refreshing especially when I have seen for myself but many Jamaicans see as just the norm with no plan to change it

You’re quite right. It’s always best to weight the pros and cons in order to make a fair assessment of any situation. Oh, we love sweet sweet Jamaica but yes, the problems are there.

Very fair and balanced piece on Jamaica.Point number 10 is very true. The customer service in Jamaica is very lousy, well apart from the Taxi Drivers. If and when I have to go to Bank I try to be there 10 minutes before opening time.

Good vlog. It took me along time to adjust to number 10. I had issue with the slow pace in Guyana and Jamaica.

Do you think the slow pace is somehow a sign of all tropical countries? I noticed the same problems in Malaysia and Thailand..

I couldn't begin express the accuracy of all of the points you have made. I am actually very impressed with your knowledge, reasoning and perspective. At first I thought this video wouldn't find me well but in fact it was a well thought out analysis of everyday Jamaican life that most foreigners don't see. Especially when it comes down to everything is okay until you need something specific. Being a music producer, most of my equipment has to be imported and customs nuh easy. Keep up the good work!

Brilliant analysis and commentary on JAMAICAN way of life Irena. So spot on. Having recently retired and moved back home after almost thirty years abroad, was not really a shock to me as I used to visit regularly
I can definitely relate to what you are saying. It will be difficult for people moving back home to assimilate into the JAMAICAN lifestyle...if they were expecting a "bed of roses", sand, sea and sunshine..JAMAICA can be all that..and more, depending on how prepared you are or how you are able to adopt to the lifestyle ok..ok..nuff said..let's just relax..kick back..enjoy all the good things that this beautiful island has to offer. After all we wanted to get out of the freezing cold, the "hustle and bustle" and the "rat race" of a first world country..
Any way Ms. Irena, big-up yuself..
    Jah know...👍👍😎😎
