I made a video about LOCAL MEDIA, and a local Television Company tried to shut it down. They requested UA-cam to remove it and gave me a copyright strike, even though my video didn't break any copyright law. I fought back, UA-cam accepted my claim and hopefully should reinstate the video soon. In the meantime - I published another video, the re-edited version with a few quotes from their videos, but without using any footage. They tried to remove it again! It was down from from 25 August to 9 September, but I won this one, and the video can now be watched here: ua-cam.com/video/0zwiPBEbTls/v-deo.html

Are you going to sue then since they did it again? Everytime someone or a business has tried to violate me they got sued. Most of the time it's been settled out of court. I've came to the realization that you're not taken seriously unless you sue.

SO TRUE. Just like how they are differing visitors and their money from the small hotels, AirB&B, small businesses. They are making sure the big hotels get the tourist visitors by locking down these businesses and preventing visitors from going to certain areas which will support these small businesses. All inclusives still get their monies.

After residing in the States for a sometime, I can confidently say that America has no place to mock or talk about Jamaica or the rest of the world 🌍. America has so many disparaging areas and lifestyles that the media will never cover especially when it pertains to white America. It’s all about creating a facade masking the real truth or not bothering to put the work in share the actual truths. Thanks Irena for putting this into context for the world to comprehend from someone who resides in Jamaica. Keep up the good work and one love 🇯🇲

Thanks Irina as always for stating facts without the hysteria. It seems to me that Jamaica and other small islands that want to stand up for themselves are being constantly maligned by extern bodies that want to keep them in their places.Ita so a sad fact that we our selves are also contributing to tbe narrative as I know that some of the biggest critics are fellow Jamaican some of whom have never been back home but listen to misinformation an trash our country to anyone that will listen. It is fair to criticise but only when comparing factual information.Instead of criticising become part of the solution.Irina Jamaica needs people like you to provide an unbiased reviwew. Thanks again.

I apologize for such a Thumbnail.. with a lot of... controversial emoji, but this is the advantage I have as a UA-camr opposed to the "official media". Imagine if a tourist board made a post like that? 😂
This video criticizes media and it's ironic how media kept pushing their "copyright claims" on it. The most annoying one was by Hollywood (Fox Entertainment) that holds the rights for "Marked for Death" film. In the end, I had to change my video completely and remove their footage.
    ...
PS. Turns out the description box of the video has a limit of 5000 symbols.. the list of references is almost 12,000 symbols with links... oops. 😆I need to figure out how to make the list with references as a separate file 🤔

I was born in Jamaica and grew up there until I was 12 years old. I have never smoked anything or seen anyone in my family smoke. It was not until I emigrated to the US and attended High School that I smelt and saw kids smoking in the restrooms in between classroom breaks. This was very shocking to me, especially growing up in a religious family. Yes, I agree that the negative media has impacted Jamaicans pride in their country. I believe this is a concerted effort or agenda to discourage us from visiting or returning home. Thanks for this report.

OMG, I have exactly the same experience! Never saw or heard of marijuana until I migrated to the US as a child. As a matter of fact, not even as a child, it wasn't until I started college that I first saw drug use. My friends thought I was joking when I told them that as a child in JA, I never saw or smelt marijuana in my entire life. The college party scene in the US really opened my eyes regarding drug use! I've never seen such heavy drug use and people passed out all over the place in my life! Then they made fun of me because I as a Jamaican refused to join in with the drug use. To them, drugs can be found round every street corner in Jamaica.

I moved to the United States at the age of 15. It’s been several decades since leaving and because I haven’t been back since 2002, I’ve had some trepidation about returning for a visit. This fear is fueled by all the stories I hear from Jamaicans who either still live in Jamaica, or Jamaican friends who visit annually and come back with stories about all the crime taking place in the country. They make it sound like a war zone although I think most of it is unintentional on their part. Thank you so much for opening up my eyes by putting it all in proper perspective.

Part of the problem is with the local media houses. Jamaican media makes international media look like they're not trying. Their coverage is horrible, all they do is report crime stats and I'm convinced that by it they actually make the crime problem worse. Because criminals know that if they do something brazen they'll end up on tv, and who doesn't want to end up on tv? I've actually seen news artcles from these same media houses where gunmen actually have come out and said this very thing, but yet the media houses continue. And their coverage results in Jamaicans constantly living in fear. Yes, Jamaica has a crime problem, but if you listen to most of the Jamaican media houses - especially television (yes you TVJ and CVM) - you'd think that Jamaica was just one big bloodfield. My conscience is pricking me and telling me that I should mention that Nationwide News Network seems to be sensible people, but other than that...? I stopped watching Jamaica's television news some years ago. It was only supposed to be a break, but when I realised how much my mental and emotional health improved by making that one decision I never looked back. So yes, I'm looking forward to part 2 of IRIE's series lol. I hope she really tell dem bout demself.

The one thing that you brought up that stands out for me was the Chris Rock comedic moment which like you, I did not find funny as I also thought to myself, what is he talking about? In any case I can see your journalistic skills shining through in this well made video.

Every video is saturated with journalistic information. Especially like this topic is so great, to get a thinking behind the scenes. It is so healthy for the mind.
We had almost been one day there by a cruise ship from Ocho Rios and visited a fruit plantation and drove back through Port Maria and visited the St Mary Parish Church where a service was finished and the people left it. Therefore we had that semi poor impression inspite we have been there.
Also the BackpackingSimon channel shows us that impression, but it shows a very positive kind of view. All of that AirBnB sites visited in this channel improved their situation and got better in business.
Such sites are great for people who want be away from the organized living in the western world. It's kind of camping on a free site.
But your videos are eye-opening for an overview of the complete situation. That was really new, to see the developed living sites and its prices in the last video.
Topics what be interesting me would be: How do Jamaicans earn their money? What kind of business are running in which size? What about the craft industry, like house buildings, street construction, car repair, lumber and wood craft like carpenters, food industry, welding and mechanic shops? Banks, press, media, the huge harbour in Kingston, the government, Commonwealth, that main influencing businesses it.

Jamaican ear their living just like people do in the USA. Some are lawyers, doctors teacher, nurses bankers, shop keeps. Whatever job in the west is in Jamaica. I know lawyers there who live a better life than the ones in the USA and they make less but they have a better quality of life.

    • @garthwilliams378
      @garthwilliams378 3 роки тому +1

As D Smith said, there exist in Jamaica traditional professions like doctors, lawyers, bankers, etc--just like any other country that I can think of. However, Jamaican industries are to a large extent based on three factors: its historic economic context, comparative advantage in trade, local market forces.
Historically, Jamaica's economy was agriculture based, whereby produce was both for local consumption export. Traditional goods produced included sugar cane, coffee beans, cocoa, bananas, coconuts, herbs and spices. Around these primary industries developed secondary/cottage industries that processes these materials into sugar, rum, coffee, chocolate, banana chips, coconut rum, water and/or oil, bottles spices such as hot sauces, mixed spices or spice purees. Whilst the cost of cultivating, or even processing these produce may not be the lowest internationally, these items attract premium price on the world market.
As mentioned previously, Jamaica may not be the ideal place to cultivate produce at competitive costs--save for all, except cannabis. The country has decriminalized the plant and is offering licences along the lines of cultivation, retail, transport, and research. Another industry where there exists comparative advantage is in bauxite mining due to low extraction costs. However, current trends within that industry have made me disapprove of the miners' activities and view the industry as another attempt at exploitation.
Even though the population of Jamaica is small, there is a large consumption of imported goods--by both businesses and citizens. These range from building supplies (lumber, plumbing, steel, lighting fixtures, etc.); consumer retail products relating to house care and beauty care; farm equipment, technology, and chemicals. Of course, the tourism and hospitality sector is a vital part of the economy, and is an avid producer as well as consumer for local goods and services such as agricultural products, builders and landscapers, and craftsmanship for art and furniture. Currently, there is a demand for logistic solutions, and will be even greater as the country establishes itself as an international logistic hub.
I'm trying to be concise. The country offers many benefits to foreign investors. I am of the opinion that the country can greatly benefit from investment in light industries--especially products targeting the construction sector. According to the Ease of Doing Business Report for 2020, Jamaica is classified as a country that is easy to do business in, and is ranked 71st. There are undoubtedly many things I have omitted, which is not intentional, but rather an attempt to answer your queries in the least amount of words.

@@garthwilliams378 and @D Smith, thank you for your valuable answers. I was in Jamaica just one time by cruise ship, in 2017. With own eyes everything is different as I was awaiting it. Also the other Caribbean islands. There was so much industry, many hubs, and also so European and not North-American in its kind. It is a real paradise.
