I fail to understand how they flopped so hard with Payday 3, this game had so much potential

Ran out of money and talent.
Starbreeze has never been able to recapture that co-op lightning in a bottle since PD2, in the slightest. All two of their attempts before PD3 have been absolute failures.

Payday 3 is the result of prior terrible investments in flopped games and engines, as well as a split development team. Even then, it wasn't the worst game out there. This game never wasted its potential, and in my opinion, is fated to exceed Payday 2, even though its reputation was ruined due to the terrible launch and absence of support.

Because it wasn't Starbreeze that came up with the gameplay loop for PDTH and PD2.
The developers that were behind it weren't even with Starbreeze during PDTH days and only joined up during the development for PD2.
They left somewhere in 2015 due to Bo Andersson likely trying to push microtransactions or whatever else into the game and devs getting tired of it. Its quite likely that was the reason why since the first DLC that dropped after the departure of the original devs was the Goat Simulator Heist.
Starbreeze literally does not understand the actual depth behind the series they only look at the surface of it, to them its just a brainless horde-shooter with a team of 4 dudes.
PAYDAY 2 used to have depth into it, regardless if it worked due to spaghettiness of it or not it still.. worked somehow, it made the game unpredictable too in some ways.
There was no hp scaling, no damage scaling, it all depended on the type of the cop unit and the weapon they were using, therefore technically there was no actual difference stat-wise between difficulties but enemy type difference.
The cops tried to be tactical and flank you or surround you instead of the rushy and spammy type that exists today.
There even was a system to have the cops react to being shot at, which would reduce their accuracy or outright make them avoid you and seek cover- this allowed Enforcer players to almost completely lock down pathways and protect teammates.
This brings me to an another point; players were allowed to either have hybrid builds to try and do everything little-by-little or invest themselves entirely into a specific role to fulfill something that other players aren't able to do.
It allowed players to be useful in certain areas of the game and it was always useful to have someone for a certain situation instead of being able to do everything yourself.
A lot of these features are gone or broken entirely from modern version of PAYDAY 2 in favor of streamlining it and making it playable to the most casual of players, anyway.
The only thing that keeps player roles today is the choice of their deployable, imo. Other than that you're no different from anyone else, making you ignore your teammates or see them as redundant as you don't lose anything for letting them go into custody etc.
If you think you have faith in the series just because PAYDAY 2 managed to live so long then think again, for PAYDAY 2 the most important foundations of the game were laid out by the og team so Starbreeze was able to salvage it somehow after their departure.
OVERKILL's The Walking Dead was a very early taste of what PAYDAY 3 would've been in the future at the time, as it was purely Starbreeze-developed and you know how it ended- nobody even remembers that thing anymore.

The reasons for the failure of this game are numerous, an example is the lack of skills like in 2, the customization of bot allies, Having added weapons they have their own level and consequently you are forced to use all the weapons enough to upgrade them

it's crazy how the devs had all the support in the world from the community and no one was expecting it to be worse than the console version of pd2

The game has lots of potential, i still believe in that, but it's hard to keep that faith after everything.
The biggest nail in the coffin for me was the first DLC retailed with an overprice and the near radio-silence with the game.
Not only that most players were already waiting for shit to get better after the horrible launch period, that DLC put the general price tag for any upcoming content which killed a lot of supporters hope, 20$ for what is essentially 3 guns 1 heist and a bunch of useless cosmetics, I'd rather waste this money anywhere else.
And the fact that the devs are taking forever to come out with any changes, again 5 months for an unready button and 7 for a quickplay feature, these features should have been added long ago, not after everyone already left, and even after all that, their Operation medic bag bullshit isn't leading anywhere, a lot of what their talking in them is STILL in development or STILL "on the table". I'm not hyped about anything that arrives because the main problems are addressed so slowly.

Payday three didn’t fail because of greed. They failed because the game they made was blatantly unfinished and not ready for market.
I’d be willing to bet that most people tried it on game pass and uninstalled it so fast they didn’t even get a chance to spend any more money.

I’m not late for the party I have payday 2 been playing it for years. I still like payday 3 and the visuals movement and gameplay is better. They dropped the ball on having a lot of new features and implementing some of the old ones but still a good game and it’s continually getting better with every update soon it will be up to par.
