Love this video and the country. So far since 1998 I have been there 14 times and spent about 17 weeks total. One story stands out which took place on my first trip. I was near Ayr on the west coast of Scotland when my tire blew out. So I nursed my car down the road to a farmer's driveway since the shoulder was too small. I thought the right thing to do was to ask the owner if I could park there to change the tire. He of course said yes. By the time I started to get the tire out of the car the farmer came out with his yellow rain coat on and told me to go inside and his wife will serve me some coffee or tea. Of course I tried to argue but I lost in the end. In no time a new tire was on my car and I was off. A year later I was back in Scotland and I made sure that I stopped at his house, even though it was long out of my way. I brought him two framed 8×10 photographs of the Oregon coast where I lived. Both him and his wife couldn't believe I would do that for them. I told them it wasn't a gift to say thank you, but a gift of friendship. We wrote to each other over the years. The farmer died in 2014. I will always remember this very random act of kindness. I have had nothing but warm hospitality from almost everyone I have met there.
Loved your story. I live on the West Coast of Scotland in Ayrshire and our people are some of the nicest folk you can meet! I bet they were truly touched by your act of kindness to thank them for what they did for you
Here is something that shocked us in Scotland. We were in a small shop in Dunoon to purchase some items and wanted to pay with a credit card. The proprietor gave us the merchandise and the receipt and asked us to go down the street three or four doors to pay at another store. When my husband expressed surprise that she would trust us to do that, she said, "People are generally honest. In the years that we have been doing this, only one person has not paid." This may not be typically Scottish, more likely small-town business, but we were touched by the warmth, trust, friendliness, and kindness of Scots wherever we were in Scotland.
Exactly. You won't find that in the cities, especially where 'multi-racialism' predominates. TRUST is to be found in the mainly white communities, for obvious reasons.

Thank you for your lovely rant about Scotland. I'm a Scottish lady, originally from Edinburgh but now living in Hampshire, England with my English husband. I agree how beautiful Scotland is. I don't think one appreciates it until you no longer live there. I'm now 78 years of age and disabled so I'm no longer able to visit my home town. I hope you visit there again with your lovely family. If you do, try to drive to a little village in Angus, it's called Edzell, where my father's family originate from. My Great Grandfather was the local Shoemaker, his name was Thomas Broom, and in a small Museum just outside Edzell, a photo of his shop is in one of the large books created by the children of the Glens many years ago. The museum is called The Retreat and was originally a hunting lodge. It's in the middle of nowhere, just beautiful surroundings. There is an old fashioned tea room with homemade scones and cakes. Being a fifth gen Texan I have never thought there was anything as amazing or beautiful as Texas. Then I was stationed in Scotland. The country, the people, the history. Amazing!!
Scotland is like a fantasy RPG that you get to explore in real life. As a professional photographer, it is heavenly. And the people are super friendly! Scottish people are the friendliest people I've ever met. Their food is amazing (scones!) and their beer is underrated. Everyone should go to Scotland at least 10 times in their life. I'm not exaggerating. You will need that much time to see everything. You can spend a week or two just on the Isle of Skye.
I'm English and I love Scotland, it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. I also love Haggis and black pudding - the latter we eat very often, down south.
Been there many times, i agree totally, i was attacked and beaten by a gang of 42 teenagers, but i got back on my feet and shouted to them as they ran off "is that it boys"? Is that all you got"? I was from Shettleston at the time and was more mental than they were....ah the good auld days.
What shocked my while visiting Scotland is how the country feels so magic and shiny even when the weather was cloudy. It was as if it was a cloudy sky from a different world.
My "shock" was how adorable, respectful, and friendly the Scots are. When I came back home to NL, where people are a lot more grumpy (let's be real), I was missing it immediately. The Scots really are like a remedy for your soul and hence why I love them!
Local tip: Visit Glasgow. Buchanan Street, KelvinGrove Museum, Kelvingrove Park, the WestEnd, Glasgow University, George Square... Glasgow has some fantastic tourist sites, many of which are free!
I'm from South Africa and my grandfather from Scotland ' McKay ' i don't no much about him but I grew up with him he always talk about Scotland and how they moved to South Africa I always tell my friends I'm Scot ... lol 🤣

Nothing shoked me when we were visiting last summer. Fell in love with this gorgeous and proud country and now dreaming of coming back one day. Thanks for the video!
Stayed in Scotland for 2 months, beautiful country, with lot of castles and landscapes, didn't expect the Scottish people to be so friendly. 🏴❤️🇷🇴
@@markburton8653 I've had great times in Germany they loved us Scottish. Walked into a small bar in Gladbach everyone stopped and stared at 2 of us walking in could cut the tension with a knife 😂 couple of drinks later and we were all dancing together. I like the Germans
It's a double edged source believe me,Scottish hospitalities well known ,you kinda have to be cause often yurr travelling and stuck in the hills so it's a remnance really from back in the day,
My daughter, and I visited the Isle of Mull last June. It was incredibly beautiful. The sun shone for our entire stay (I got a sunburn). It was so much warmer than normal, the pavement on the roads was melting at the edges. Great food, hospitality, and friendly, helpful folks. We love Scotland. ♥️
when I was there the first thing I noticed was how clean the whole country was. For an ancient land they sure show pride in it, and keep it pristine. No trash along the roads or anywhere. You forgot to mention the passing lanes on the narrow country roads. That takes a little getting used to. Coming to a crest of a hill and meeting a full size lorry coming at you! Yikes!
I laughed at your diplomacy regarding Scottish advice for tourists. Scots are quick-witted, quick to assist, funny AF, and just a wee bit bossy! But in the most helpful way...just follow their advice and no one gets hurt. I do love, love, love Scotland!
The people are the BEST! Their knowledge of their history is amazing.... I was there 30 years ago, my son got his masters from university of Edinburgh. My hubby speaks Gaelic... can’t wait to go back!
In my own opinion Scotland is the most beautiful country in the world. It’s just amazingly stunning, and the colours of the countryside. It’s nature is so wonderful. I’m from London but always amazed at how beautiful Scotland is when especially travelling by train. Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
I've been in scotland 3 weeks ago... and never have I met such beautiful, lovely, nice people ❤ a beautiful country, stunning landscapes and Edinburgh is just amazing!!!
Although I have only lived in central Scotland ( Edinburgh ,Glasgow, Stirling ) I'm not sure of up north in small villages but cities like Aberdeen ,Edinburgh, Stirling and Glasgow are, pretty bad places, to be
I have visited there many times both on holiday and on business. I am in love with the city and its people. The vibe is so great. The city has a way if sucking you in, wrapping you in a warm blanket, and making you feel like you are at home. If I could i would move there.
Yeah if your idea of perfect's that scene in south park where they literally sweep the homeless out of the nice bits. Don't even bother putting them in sheds or down the sewers.
Connor The thom I am not denying that there isn’t a problem, in fact I happened to live in the area in Edinburgh which had drug problems but I was never bothered. The thing is no big cities are untouched with this thing but bigger picture as a whole I found the city welcoming, beautiful and very organised.
There are some absolutely beautiful parts of England - bits of Cornwall, Yorkshire, Northumberlandare as beautiful, in their own way, as anything in Scotland. Have to say that it tends to be the extremities rather than the middle bit though. Whitby, Malham Cove, York, Marazion and Bamburgh for example.
As a Scot i will say that England has some nice bits, pretty much everywhere north of Manchester (or mini Scotland ;)). The South West, Cotswolds etc I've not been to the South Coast or the bit next to Wales but I assume there is nice stuff there too
To quote Robert Burns; "O wad some Power the giftie gie us To see oursels as ithers see us!" Thank you for your kind words! Always love hosting our American friends!
Brilliant line, but the wrong context. Burns was describing the bigotted and vain people in church who thought they were better than everyone else, but were crawling with lice and NOT any better than anyone else. That's not us.
Greetings from a native Scot 🏴. Great video, delighted you all loved our beautiful country. It really is one of the most hospitable places on earth. Haste Ye Back.
I agree. An amazing place. My mom and I are heading to the Shetland Islands this summer to see our old family home from our great great great great you get the idea :)
Mark, this is a great example of why I consider you a great travel advisor. I visited Scotland about 15 years ago and found EVERYTHING you said to be true. Scotland remains one of my all-time favorite places.
Most important things about Scotland, if you are lost or struggling to find a place to visit/eat. Ask the locals, most of them will go out of there way to help you and probably tell you a joke or humorous anecdote as well ad they guide you.
I live in South West Scotland and I’ve waited for this vid for so long! I work as a sales assistant at a tourist attraction and I have never heard anyone bad-mouth Scotland! And I appreciate you pronouncing Edinburgh correctly as so many U.S tourists say “Edinburg”. Please come by again!
I love Scotland! I lived at RAF Machrihanish for 3 years. Near Campletown. 9 Cnoc Moy Gardens. My husband was U.S. military(Navy) So we met Scottish, English, Welch and Irish people on the base. The people are just lovely and kind. And Scotland is beautiful. We did have pretty rainy and windy weather though. My son was born in Glasgow in 1980. We were there from 1979-1982. We explored many, many places. I just can't say enough wonderful things about it. It was wonderful!😊❤
Great video, Mark and your excitement about places is always infectious. Here are a dozen extra "shocks" we have experienced about Scotland: 1. Glasgow was nicer than we thought it would be. 2. The Isle of Skye and Edinburgh both live up to the hype. 3. That goes for Scotland in general. 4. Jimmy Page once owned an estate on Loch Ness. 5. Rabbie's Tours is excellent. 6. The Dumfries House in Cumnock is exceptional. 7. The train ride to the northern tip of Scotland is epic. 8. The southwestern part of Scotland including Dumfries and Caerlaverock Castle nearby is worth a vacation all it's own. 9. Scotland doesn't have much wildlife (outside of Nessie) to speak of - used to be bears but no more, just occasional deer. I have Scottish cousins who different times have exclaimed, "Oh, look, a squirrel!" 10. Driving on the left is fine ... until you have to drive into a city ... 11. It's not just ancient castles, it's ruins of abbeys that are interesting too. 12. Scots always seem amazed that other people think their country is really special when to the rest of us, we're like, "Yeah it is!"
I left my heart in Scotland! I love that country so much. The people are great, I’ve never seen so much natural beauty in my life. To me, it’s a dream 💞
I visited last September (my Spring, Scottish Autumn) and I was so disappointed it was hot, I was headed into this summer (forecast to reach 50degC in my area) I just wanted to feel cold. It rained once for less than an hour 😂 so much for my expensive raincoat.
I am Scottish and love my country, we are very friendly and welcome tourists to our little neighborhoods. We will always give directions and recommendations of where to go! My top 2 bits of advice would be get out of the city and visit the surrounding areas, I live very close to Dundee which is great for visitors lots to see and do, but a short drive away is Glamis castle which is truly breathe taking (and even as a local a great place to visit). My 2nd piece of advice is definitely try the food, we have lots of interesting flavours for you to try the top ones being (in my opinion) Lorne/square sausage, irn bru, tablet (it is very sweet), haggis, arbroath smokie, and any local fish. Enjoy the beautiful views 😁😁
There is plenty more to the Hebrides than just Skye. The place is overrun with tourists in the summer months without the infrastructure to support it. So if you are visiting then maybe consider some other Islands such as Islay with all its Whisky distilleries and Jura with its beautiful mountains or the outer Hebrides with its vast expanses of white sandy beach. You won't be disappointed
I haven't been to Scotland but I really want to go. As a Newfoundlander, who is 20% Scottish and I feel very connected to the area! Also as Newfoundlander, I believe a lot of Scottish traditions, food and language have continued here.... Hope one day to find out!
I was born and raised in Scotland. I'm glad you love it as much as we do! Did you know that most of the seafood in the fancy restaurants in Europe comes from the bountiful seas around Scotland? Our meat is pretty famous too (not just venison and aberdeen angus). There are quite a few reasonably priced restaurants in Scotland with Michelin stars that you could try. We have even been known to take families of complete (but willing) strangers to dinner to show them how good Scots food is! Give us a shout next time you're in Edinburgh - it would be our pleasure 😁.
In October you might be lucky and get a late summer or unlucky and get an early winter - but most likely it will be a mixture of both. Bring lots of layers that you can put on or take off according the, often rapidly changing, weather. I would suggest that you have at least one genuine water and wind proof outer layer garment. Remember the old saying; there is no such thing as unsuitable weather - there is only unsuitable clothing! Welcome to our little country. i hope you enjoy your visit.
One thing that shocked me in Scotland was how close everything is. You can see both Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument from Bridge of Allan, and the Bannockburn battlefield and museum was just a short walk from our hotel. Glasgow to Edinburgh is just a 45 minute train ride.
I travel a lot with students on educational tours. And I’ve traveled a lot on my own. We visited Scotland in July 2018 and I can’t wait to go back. I love Scotland and everything you say is so true! I cried so many times just from being overwhelmed at the beauty of the country. The people are some of the nicest people I have ever met. My husband is not a traveler. He would rather stay in our little very rural corner of Northeast Texas. I’m surprised he’s actually wanting to travel with me to Scotland! Currently planning our trip! Thank you for the phenomenal video!
My fathers family originated from Scotland, and I finally got to visit here last year. A truly incredible place, so friendly and proud of their heritage. I drank a toast to their memory with a glass of whisky. What an experience!!
As a Scottish person, i love this video, you appreciate our humour, our somewhat variant accents( i am originally from Glasgow but have lived in Fort William for around 12 years ), subscribed to you for your take on my wee country, thank you ☺
40 years in Aberdeen. Wouldn't live anywhere else. 5 mins to the beach, 10 mins to the country, 20 mins to the hills, 40 to the mountains. Also, one of the highest concentration of neolithic sites (stone circles, etc) in the world, within about an hours radius.

Great video, and as a Scot I agree with everything you said. I'd also advise visitors to leave their diet at home for the short time they're here.. You can get healthy food here but our notoriously unhealthy food is sorta part of the visitor experience in my view.
Indeed, the Scottisch breakfast is also called "a heartattack waiting to happen on a plate". But still I will eat it as much as I could, because it is so darn good.
@@steph.7 They all do it. What's wrong with spending 20 minutes finding a youtube video that has Edinburgh pronounced correctly? They would (being Americans) love the tongue roll at the end.
I am from Germany and have lived in Scotland in Hamilton for 4 months last year. I can confirm your points, besides the weather. During those 4 months (January-April) I've seen the sun only like ten times (no joke)
My wife and I honeymooned in Scotland, and absolutely loved it. The point made about the Scottish people is ABSOLUTELY accurate in our experience, as is the point about driving on rural roads. Regarding haggis, about halfway through our trip, my wife wondered out loud if haggis is the Scottish national joke on the rest of the world; where they'd recommend it to tourists but never eat it themselves. When we mentioned this to Scots natives the rest of the trip, they'd all laugh; but no one disagreed. Makes a person think.......
I've only been twice. I'm English. The media often portrays my Scots brethren as a bunch of resentful jocks and so that was partly what I expected the first time I visited. Nothing is further from the truth. Its a beautiful place with wonderful people. I've only got good and positive things to say about Scotland. The last time I went I spent two days driving around Loch Ness and that area and it did me the world of good. Just keep your speed down and drive sensibly because occasionally I'd spot what I took to be a foreign tourist wandering over to the wrong side of the road in their car out of habit.
The media does that to maintain the union. Sorry for getting political, but it's true. Our side of the coin is that we don't deserve, can't or couldn't afford to run our own affairs. It's infuriating. I wish we could both go about our way as independent nations as friends/partners in shaping the world. Might sound a bit naive or like wishful thinking, but we aw huv wur dreams. As ma wee mammy used tae say "whit's fur ye, disny go bye ye".
I spent a few years in Dunoon and across the fith of clyde in Gourik , saw the Highland games, visited sterling castle, and YES you can see all four seasons in one day - though in Scotland it didn't seem that bad. If you don't like the weather, just wait, it will change soon :). Scotland is truly a beautiful place with tons to see. The single malt is top notch too! If anyone has even thought about it, take a trip to Scotland. You'll be glad you did.
I'm a tourguide here in Scotland and taking tourists to the places you featured in this video is my bread and butter. I view a lot of these "American dude visits Scotland" videos. Yours is up there with the best. Seriously, it was very well presented I thought that you "sold" this beautiful country very well to others. If I ever see you in Scotland again I'll buy you pint!

I'm from Scotland and I approve this message.
when I was there the first thing I noticed was how clean the whole country was. For an ancient land they sure show pride in it, and keep it pristine. No trash along the roads or anywhere.
You forgot to mention the passing lanes on the narrow country roads. That takes a little getting used to. Coming to a crest of a hill and meeting a full size lorry coming at you! Yikes!
It gets a little less clean further from the tourist spots, trust me!
Have to disagree. Scotland has a terrible litter problem. Maybe more in urban areas admittedly...
Have you seen the by laws in North Ayrshire 😟
We get fined for littering, and for not picking up dog turds.
Scotland is cleaner than a lot of paces. But it does not compare to places like Germany and Austria. Now they are pristine
I laughed at your diplomacy regarding Scottish advice for tourists. Scots are quick-witted, quick to assist, funny AF, and just a wee bit bossy! But in the most helpful way...just follow their advice and no one gets hurt. I do love, love, love Scotland!

Everything is better than England
There are some absolutely beautiful parts of England - bits of Cornwall, Yorkshire, Northumberlandare as beautiful, in their own way, as anything in Scotland. Have to say that it tends to be the extremities rather than the middle bit though. Whitby, Malham Cove, York, Marazion and Bamburgh for example.
As a Scot i will say that England has some nice bits, pretty much everywhere north of Manchester (or mini Scotland ;)). The South West, Cotswolds etc I've not been to the South Coast or the bit next to Wales but I assume there is nice stuff there too

Bill King great comments. I think we have our fair share of wild life. Especially the islands. Plus have you seen the pubs empty 😂😂😂

Had a couple a hawf's and feeling the same.
It depends who you talk to, most of us love haggis, skirlie, mealie puddings and the like.
