Most different pronunciations in North America in particular were due to misspellings when many couldn't write or spell correctly. Same with names for persons too. Another Edinburgh Local here, few tips I'd like to share. 1. Imo the best pub two pubs in the centre are Guildford Arms (New Town) and Bow Bar (Old Town, if you can get a seat. Blue Blazer is a great alternative if you can't). Lothian Road and the area next to it also has a lot of great pubs too, Bennets Bar is a must! 2. You can't buy alcohol in shops after 10pm until 10am and they're very strict about it 3. Personally I prefer to take the Airport bus (the 100) from the airport than the tram, cheaper and in a lot of situations much quicker than the tram. 4. Best view in Edinburgh for very little effort imo is just next to the duck pond in Inverleith Park and if you're here during New Year or the end of the Festival is by far the best place to watch the fireworks! 5. Highly recommend checking out the Royal Yacht Britannia in Leith, it's a great attraction and has a great tea room. Teutchars Landing or the Dreadnought are great pubs to go to afterwards. 6. If you fancy it we have some amazing swimming pools dotted all around the city, lots of them from the Victorian times with wonderful history and architecture. Definitely worth checking out! 7. If you're planning on getting a taxi to the airport you can get it to one of the hotels nearby and walk to the terminal (10 minute walk) instead of going right to the airport, it can save you a decent amount of money.
It depends where you are staying but Glenogle, Dalry and Warrender are all great options and are fairly central. It costs around £6 for a swim and book through the Edinburgh Leisure website. Hope you have a great stay in Edinburgh!
I was just there…I’m in love. Food, people and so much to see and do. I’m 67 and logged 22,000 steps in one day there going up and down the hills. Thanks for making travel seem less intimidating.
Unfortunately for the people who live here, it seems like the council really hates us and do everything they can to annoy us. They never listen to us, and generally do everything for the tourists. Locals call Edinburgh a Disneyland style theme park for the tourists.
Another way to avoid the parking situation is using the park & rides at the edge of town. Most of them are free, or it's 50p per 24h, and they are well connected to the town by public transport.
Yes, "Wolter" is a bit narrowly focused on cars ... and flying. I flew into London, and after a few days there (wonderful!) then took the train to Edinburgh. So fun. NO CAR necessary. From Edinburgh, engaged a taxi driver (he was fantastic) to drive us around the middle of Scotland (castles mostly) and then dropped us off in St. Andrews.
@@reinhard8053I live in Leith and work on the western edge of the city and I leave my car at home and commute by tram or bicycle, depending on the weather. Like most towns and cities, Edinburgh is awash with utility works and, if you use your car, you'll spend a lot of time sitting in queues of traffic. Not much fun

That was awesome Mark. We live in north east England and visit Edinburgh multiple times a year. As you have said, the Royal Mile is fantastic, but a short walk from there brings you to the Dean Vilage, Stockbridge, Leith or the hidden gem of Duddingston village. Take the tram to it's final stop at Newhaven which has the most magical harbour or venture further along The Forth to the beautiful village of Cramond - if you catch low tide a walk over the causeway to Cramond Island is fantastic. How about South Queensferry underneath the breathtaking Forth Bridge? Another magical place. Aw, so many amazing places to visit and we're looking forward to our annual trip to the Christmas Market in a few weeks 😊
Hi, Edinburgh local here. I love the airport, I definitely prefer small airports in general (ever been to Turin?) Never seen an airport so busy and yet security controls and passaport controls take NOTHING. Like, controls at the busiest take 5 minutes top. Other than this, I love this city so much and I am glad you did
But security generally takes longer than 5 minutes, they heard you at the gates, then open them letting a certain number through them close them, and if you are with people you can be separated at the gate, which is not good for nervous travellers or such, then you have to follow the queue to the front where you put your stuff in the bucket, but often have no space to put the bucket as others are pushing them on. It can easily take over 20 minutes and it has for us many times. The last time I went through was really fast but it still took more than 5 minutes.
I'm a local too. Let's not dress it up, it's pretty crap and waits are far longer than 5 minutes. Often it takes 45 minutes for the aircraft you are on to get a stand after landing and arriving at the terminal! The airport really lets the city down. It's a terrible arrivals experience. Aircraft waits for stands, long waits for luggage. On departures, the terminal is small, cramped and uncomfortably crowded. Security is a shambles taking place in a tiny security hall not designed for the volume of passengers that use it. The road into the airport is in a terrible state of repair and verges are covered with litter. Yes, smaller airports are better but Edinburgh is not in that range. It's a small airport with a mid sized airport's passengers using it. And it shows.
Excelent. There is hardly any "low" season now...Very busy all year, particularly August and New Year season. Update: The tram goes from the airport now (2023), down to Leith/Newhaven and the Royal Yacht Britannia at Ocean Terminal
Good video. My wife and I spent a few days there this month and had a blast. As crazy as it may sound to some, Edinburgh is an excellent long weekend getaway location from the US. I completely agree that it is a great place to start your adventure if you are an American and have never been to Europe.
Loved, loved, loved Edinburgh. I did not like Fringe and the crowds, but I loved Edinburgh. Did not like black pudding, surprisingly liked Haggis, and absolutely adored Scotland and its rich history.
Hi, I am glad you enjoyed Edinburgh, my native city. Sadly, work took me to London for a few years, then to the US for the last 44, so my trips home are now few and far between. But I would advise visitors to spend only a little time in the Royal Mile. Yes, see it, but explore the area immediately south (especially the Museum in Chamber Street and the University, Greyfriars, etc.) and the New Town (circa 1775) across Princes Street Gardens, George Street, Queen Street, as far as Stockbridge. See Leith and make a trip to Cramond. And if you have time for only one train trip, don't waste it on Glasgow. Take the Fife Circle and you will get two rides across the miraculous Forth Bridge. Nice to break that trip for an hour or two in Burntisland.
Been up to Edinburgh four times this year as my office is based up there (I live in Manchester); had to watch this the second it dropped. For me the worst thing about Edinburgh is having to leave the place...

He never gave you the alternative if Edinburgh is in the middle of your trip and you have a car. We did this we drove to our hotel, which is just on the outskirts of Edinburgh, parked our car at a park-and-ride for the public transportation and took public transportation into the city center. It was really very easy no problems at all.

My mom and I went to Edinburgh in 2016…loved it so much!! We went in August and saw the Military Tattoo and it was incredible. I really loved the pubs and Holyrood House, and the people were super friendly. Can’t wait to take my husband and kids there one day!!
I went in December. It was freaking cold but I loved it! There weren't that many tourists plus I got to visit the Christmas market. And you can board a train that takes you to other places like Stirling or even loch Ness.
The Christmas market was pretty awful last Year, easily the worst since it started as the company that were setting it up pulled out at very short notice. This year's market should be much bigger and better.
stayed in Edinburgh for 5 years during my time at university and i loved it so much. Im back in Dunfermline now, just across the bridge but long term; looking to move back. I used to live right next to hollyrood and authurs seat was literally a 2/3 min walk away. Would climb it twice a day during the summer, one in the morning and one at night. Never been so fit and you'd be surprised by how therapeutic getting to enjoy a nice view can be. Can't speak for parking as i dont drive but i do love the bus system, knowing that no matter what time it is, you are at most an hour away from being able to get a bus to where you need to go (unless they've changed it since covid)
@@gabrieljacobs1008 i went to heriot watt. Its a little outside the city but you can get a bus to it from pretty much everywhere. Had a few friends and napier and edinbutgh and i never heard anything bad about them other than the web design course from Napier. I did business with finance. Only city i ever lived in so probably the same for other cities but i loved it so much. best 5 years of my life. If you are outside of scotland, im not sure how you would go about applying. I think i knew like 5 people out of 50 who was also from scotland, so it was all very diverse with no issues.
My husband and I visited Glasgow and Edinburgh in September. We took public transportation and walked all over Edinburgh. We didn't have any desire to rent a car. The taxi driver who drove us to Edinburgh airport when our vacation ended said Edinburgh is full of tourists all year, not just in the summer. We had no problems at Edinburgh airport for our 9a.m. flight.
It is full most of the year but July/August is pure crazy, as is New Year. As to July August I would not step foot on the Royal Mile as a city resident..
Trams extended their route last year. So york place doesnt have a stop now, its been moved just further down the street at picardy place..where the sherlock holmes statue is. The tram now goes down leith walk,constitution street,ocean terminal..for the royal yacht brittania and then stops at Newhaven
We recently visited and found the people to be wonderful and friendly. The food was fantastic and the tours and sites were amazing. Thank you Scotland !! We look forward to visiting again.

My favorite city that I have visited in Europe..It is magical.. And yes I took the tram from the airport and picked up my car at the airport when I headed to the Highlands.. ( also magical)
We speak Scots, Scottish English and Gaelic, take your pick but we mostly try to ensure you will understand us. An area than often gets ignored is the Borders. We’ve got really great views and loads of places and hills where you can go walking. It’s a great place to visit.
You missed the heavy wind gusts, an Edinburgh speciality. The streets intersecting with Princes Street act as funnels reinforcing the wind blowing from the Firth of Forth.
I took Scotrail around the country, spent time in Edinburg staying on the Royal Mile at the Hotel Missoni between Edinburg Castle and St. Giles Cathedral, across from Deacon Brodies. Spent the majority of my 3 weeks in Ft William for training (when the school was open) and the weekends in Edinburg and Glasgow. Edinburg was hands down better! Can't wait to visit there again!
went in july this year and i highly recommend getting out and away from the royal mile. i found the village of dean and honestly forgot I was in the capital city its so beautiful and quiet.
There is so much worth seeing outside of the usual tourist areas. Use the excellent public transport and explore more widely, A ten minute bus or tram trip will open everything up.
Yup, you are totally right. Edinburgh is working hard to give mobility back to pedestrians, bicycles and public transport, and I love it. The advice re not renting a car while staying here is awesome and people can spend the money in the town instead. Edinburgh airport is becoming an increasing pain in my behind. I am living here but flying about four times a year to visit family in Europe and I have the feeling it is getting worse with every year. It is really sad as it is often the first and last impression people have of their holiday.
The surrounding areas are good for example portobello by the sea is a 15 min bus ride to the center also East lothian and Glasgow 1 hr away fife is also very beautiful and near explore the boundaries .. dean village , New Haven , leith, portobello, north berwick … not just princes street and the castle 🏰 ❤
Hi Mark, native Scot here. A few points. 1) When you mention the Airport, you show the Parliament ! 2) Did you mention Holyroodhouse as the place where the Queen stays in Scotland ? If you didn't it must be my hearing. 3) I agree that Edinburgh isn't car-friendly. On top of that, getting out can be a nightmare. I stay in Glasgow when I come home to Scotland (hello Mum) and finding the M8 motorway to head West can be a hassle without a good satnav. 4) One thing that annoys we native Scots (who want tourists to have a good time in Scotland) is a) the amount of tourist tat in some shops on the Royal Mile and also b) the general rundown atmosphere of Princes Street which used to be a great shopping area. 5) At Festival time, it might be a good idea to stay in Glasgow and commute. And another thing I find slightly annoying about the festival is the general lack of Scottish content (I know it wasn't meant to be a purely Scottish thing, but all the same ...). 6) Two or three things I can recommend. The fudge shop on the right hand side of the Royal Mile as you head towards Holyroodhouse, the Elephant House café where JK Rowling wrote her first stories as a single mother and the Museum of Scotland (which I believe is still free). Also the Zoo which is pretty cool as zoos go. And the Parliament building. Thanks for coming to my country, love to Jocelyn and the boys. Fáilte gu Alba !
I know this is an old video as you are showing the old St James Centre. It is gone and has been turned into the St James Quarter. I think you need to come back to this city. There is, as you say, more to see in the city than the Royal Mile. I don't know if you went to Edinburgh Zoo or down the Dean Village or to Leith and Portobello. Also check Craigmillar Castle in the South of the city. Oh and the Tram now runs from the Airport to Newhaven on the Coast of the Firth Of Forth.
Currently in "Edinbrah" ,for the 6th time,and still love to come back every year.And of course i do discover something new every time, cause i don't have to stick to the beaten tracks anymore.If you explore the closes,the nooks and crannies,you'll be amazed of what to find. And yes, going to the city centre by car is hellish.But Lothian Buses offer good transport at reasonable fares.
Love Edinburgh and our most recent visit was just a couple weeks ago. Had great weather. We walk or take public transit everywhere. We never rent a car in Scotland. We’ve stayed in both the New and the Old Town. Get your comfy shoes on. We logged in 18,000 to 20,000 steps every day.
I was in Scotland during the first week of September 2023...it was HOT! But I visited people I knew and they showed me around and not just the popular places. A great time to go with fewer tourists!

Hi Mark great video, as a local I can tell you Edinburgh is the only city in the world where all your journeys on foot are uphill both going to and coming back from your destination, invest in a good pair of shoes and you’ll not only enjoy your visit but you’ll get fitter as a result of your stay.
after many trips to Edinburgh (and Glasgow and the Highlands) have found we do not need a car at all, even our house sits off in some of the smaller villages have been very accessible for public transit, and it is not really that much slower. You do have to be aware of the occasional strikes, however they are very transparent and easy to plan around. Great info, we love Edinburgh and were just there.
If you really want a hidden gem of Edinburgh, technically it is part of Edinburgh but most people here wouldn't see it that way... take a day trip from South Queensferry by ferry to the Island of Inchcolm... it's often referred to as the Iona of the East and it's stunning... numbers of people allowed to land are controlled by Historic Scotland so it never gets too busy. It comprises of the ruins of a 12th century ancient Abbey, 1st and 2nd world war defences, along with napoleonic war defences that you can explore freely... if you get lucky you might be able to pre-book a guided tour with one of the monks from the local area (not from the island, they no longer reside there) depending on time of year and which ferry sailing company you choose (i believe there are only two companies who sail there and it depends on time of year and they are both weather dependant?) to sail with. You won't be disappointed and the the cost is stupidly cheap, even for a local... be warned though, take a picnic and water with you because the only shop on the small island is very limited in what it sells... also take warm clothing with you because even though it might be a warm/hot day on land, it can be damn cold out on the water!
We were just in Edinburgh at the end of Sept and we absolutely LOVED EDINBURGH !!! There was so much cool history and architecture there !!! We visited the Castle which I thought was worth it. We also did 3 night time walking tours (The Witches tour, the Vaults tour (my favorite) and the City of the Dead Graveyard tour (amazing). We stayed at the Stay Central on The Cowgate (right next to the Three Sisters Bar which was great) and it was only 1 block from the Royal Mile ( you just go up the Old Fish Market Close across the street and you come out right near St Giles Cathedral in the middle of the Royal Mile). We climbed Arthurs Seat which was rugged but so worth it (wear good running / hiking shoes) We ate and drank at many of pubs in the Grass Market area (right at the end of The Cowgate Rd) and searched Greyfriars Kirk Yard for Harry Potter tomb stones. There was so much to see and do that didn't cost a lot or was even free. Everting that we did was within walking distance from The Stay Central Hotel(which was nice and the staff were very friendly and even stored our luggage on our last day so we could see a few last sights before our flight out. I would also highly recommend taking the Tram from the Airport to Princess Street and then getting an Uber to get to your hotel. We had so much fun and still didn't see everything ( like the Ross Fountain and Scott Monument as well as many of the Museums which are all FREE !!!) WE WILL BE BACK !!! 0:020:02
It's definitely worth venturing away from the Old / New Town. Edinburgh has lots of beautiful neighbourhoods that are joined together and are walking distance from the city centre. Dean Village, Stockbridge, Comely Bank and Inverleith (home to the Botanical gardens) are well worth a visit. If you're lucky enough to visit on a sunny day, Portobello beach is a great option too.
I was just in Edinburgh. It was so cold!! Otherwise, it is a great place to visit. The Tram was great for getting about from the airport. I also didn't have any issues getting through the airport.
In Edinburgh there are loads of buses but in tourist season often quicker to walk. Depending how long you are here probably a good idea to either buy the weekly/ 4 weekly pass or get a day ticket as you need.
5-6 o'clock is tea time in most of the UK anyway so turing up to the pub and expecting food after 8 and especially after 9 is and getting any is very lucky. Regardless if you're taking kids or not.
Visited Edinburgh in May of ‘23 and loved the city. One area you missed was Leith where we stayed and Shore which had a lot of restaurants and pubs if one is looking to get out of the Royal Mile for a bit. Also if looking to tour the palace etc, book tickets well in advance. We missed out on the palace as tickets were already sold out.

@@Unclepaulable May is a good time to visit before peak tourist season kicks in. Weather will be mild, but unpredictable. Bring some warmer clothing and rain jackets, just in case. All the best from Edinburgh.
The first part is exactly why I ALWAYS get the train when I visit Edinburgh. I have absolutely no reason to use the car, especially when the train only takes 2-3 hours from where I live compared to a 4-5 hour drive followed by one of the worst places to bring your car to. Takes you straight into the city centre, where I can easily walk to all the main sights, or catch a bus to the university. The tram service has now opened its full extension eastwards to Leith, so you have more parts of the city reachable by tram, which has become a full cross-city service as opposed to just a city-airport shuttle.
Edinburgh Christmas market with a fun fair is beautiful to visit too. Try the city sightseeing tour buses that take you all around and have audio that gives you the history. . You can hop on and hop off
As a Dundonian I love Edinburgh especially at Fringe Festival Time. A bit like London though do not think I could live there 365. Just too many people all the time although there are plenty quiet spots if you know were to look.
No-one I know will ever voluntarily drive in Edinburgh. In Glasgow? Yes. But not Edinburgh. If we need to go to Edinburgh for work my colleagues that drive will get the train. Edinburgh has really good public transport too. I love walking in Edinburgh but it can be a bit tricky figuring out how to get places for the first time. It is busy in Edinburgh and getting busier with every visit, but there's plenty to see outside of the tourist hospots too. I avoid the place entirely during the festival cos I don't like crowds. I spend more time in the New Town than the Old Town. I particularly like Stockbridge (especially when the market's on), Dean Village and the walk along Leith Water in between the two is one of my favourites.
I often pickup my wife from town if its super late and means waiting ages on a bus or train (To Wallyford) and I really don't think drive is that horrible. Obviously this is mostly around midnight so only annoyance is the cyclists with 0 lights/reflectors and I'm not paying for parking in town somewhere as that gets crazy quick. Although a tip for parking, you can park at Fountainpark for 2/3 hours for free, aslong as you visit one of the shops there :)
@@caolkyle Heading from the East into Edinburgh is a lot easier than heading from the west (by Car) all the Glasgow/Airport/Fife traffic shoehorned on that side is pretty bad. Us on the east have a couple of options and there is not that many of us!! Speaking of that come and Visit East Lothian when you are in Edinburgh, plenty Castles, Golf Courses and other touristy stuff

My wife and I stayed in a fantastic little bed and breakfast about a mile walk from the Royal Mile. Worked out perfectly and we could leave our car parked at the bnb.
Our kid (aka Frog) went to primary school on the Royal Mile - the journey home was a bit of a challenge in the summer! The tram line got extended earlier this year and goes all the way down to Newhaven.
Another random gem on the royal mile is the camera obscurer , lots of fun for the kids. Also don’t forget the scotch whisky experience which is fun for the adults
I live here. Newtown (it's only 150 years old, this flat). I'm glad you like it, so do we. Although struggling through horizontal sleet in the dark of 5pm in winter can be a bit of a strain. Heavy weather gear is sometimes a good idea.
Traveling from the states to visit family we've been there many a time. Love the city and the country. If you can be sure to visit other areas of the country. St. Andrews, the Highlands, Sterling Castle, the Scottish isles.

It is a really nice play to live, but you definitely need to take vitamin D and use a daylight light in winter, because of the short daylight hours.
Another way to avoid the parking situation is using the park & rides at the edge of town. Most of them are free, or it's 50p per 24h, and they are well connected to the town by public transport.
Yes, "Wolter" is a bit narrowly focused on cars ... and flying. I flew into London, and after a few days there (wonderful!) then took the train to Edinburgh. So fun. NO CAR necessary. From Edinburgh, engaged a taxi driver (he was fantastic) to drive us around the middle of Scotland (castles mostly) and then dropped us off in St. Andrews.
Parking and driving is annoying in most any bigger town. I know my city and it is still no fun to go into the center by car.
@@reinhard8053I live in Leith and work on the western edge of the city and I leave my car at home and commute by tram or bicycle, depending on the weather. Like most towns and cities, Edinburgh is awash with utility works and, if you use your car, you'll spend a lot of time sitting in queues of traffic. Not much fun

That was awesome Mark. We live in north east England and visit Edinburgh multiple times a year. As you have said, the Royal Mile is fantastic, but a short walk from there brings you to the Dean Vilage, Stockbridge, Leith or the hidden gem of Duddingston village. Take the tram to it's final stop at Newhaven which has the most magical harbour or venture further along The Forth to the beautiful village of Cramond - if you catch low tide a walk over the causeway to Cramond Island is fantastic. How about South Queensferry underneath the breathtaking Forth Bridge? Another magical place. Aw, so many amazing places to visit and we're looking forward to our annual trip to the Christmas Market in a few weeks 😊

Never seen an airport so busy and yet security controls and passaport controls take NOTHING. Like, controls at the busiest take 5 minutes top.

But security generally takes longer than 5 minutes, they heard you at the gates, then open them letting a certain number through them close them, and if you are with people you can be separated at the gate, which is not good for nervous travellers or such, then you have to follow the queue to the front where you put your stuff in the bucket, but often have no space to put the bucket as others are pushing them on. It can easily take over 20 minutes and it has for us many times. The last time I went through was really fast but it still took more than 5 minutes.
Cannot confirm any inconvenience. Yes, it is small, yes departure is small and it may be difficult to find a place to rest.... That's it.
I'm a local too. Let's not dress it up, it's pretty crap and waits are far longer than 5 minutes. Often it takes 45 minutes for the aircraft you are on to get a stand after landing and arriving at the terminal! The airport really lets the city down. It's a terrible arrivals experience. Aircraft waits for stands, long waits for luggage. On departures, the terminal is small, cramped and uncomfortably crowded. Security is a shambles taking place in a tiny security hall not designed for the volume of passengers that use it. The road into the airport is in a terrible state of repair and verges are covered with litter. Yes, smaller airports are better but Edinburgh is not in that range. It's a small airport with a mid sized airport's passengers using it. And it shows.
International Arrivals at Edinburgh is pretty horrible.
Excelent. There is hardly any "low" season now...Very busy all year, particularly August and New Year season.
Update: The tram goes from the airport now (2023), down to Leith/Newhaven and the Royal Yacht Britannia at Ocean Terminal
Good video. My wife and I spent a few days there this month and had a blast. As crazy as it may sound to some, Edinburgh is an excellent long weekend getaway location from the US. I completely agree that it is a great place to start your adventure if you are an American and have never been to Europe.
Loved, loved, loved Edinburgh. I did not like Fringe and the crowds, but I loved Edinburgh. Did not like black pudding, surprisingly liked Haggis, and absolutely adored Scotland and its rich history.
Hi, I am glad you enjoyed Edinburgh, my native city. Sadly, work took me to London for a few years, then to the US for the last 44, so my trips home are now few and far between. But I would advise visitors to spend only a little time in the Royal Mile. Yes, see it, but explore the area immediately south (especially the Museum in Chamber Street and the University, Greyfriars, etc.) and the New Town (circa 1775) across Princes Street Gardens, George Street, Queen Street, as far as Stockbridge. See Leith and make a trip to Cramond. And if you have time for only one train trip, don't waste it on Glasgow. Take the Fife Circle and you will get two rides across the miraculous Forth Bridge. Nice to break that trip for an hour or two in Burntisland.
Been up to Edinburgh four times this year as my office is based up there (I live in Manchester); had to watch this the second it dropped. For me the worst thing about Edinburgh is having to leave the place...

He never gave you the alternative if Edinburgh is in the middle of your trip and you have a car. We did this we drove to our hotel, which is just on the outskirts of Edinburgh, parked our car at a park-and-ride for the public transportation and took public transportation into the city center. It was really very easy no problems at all.
I love Scotland. Never in Europe I have encountered so nice people. Except may be in The Netherlands.

My mom and I went to Edinburgh in 2016…loved it so much!! We went in August and saw the Military Tattoo and it was incredible. I really loved the pubs and Holyrood House, and the people were super friendly. Can’t wait to take my husband and kids there one day!!
I went in December. It was freaking cold but I loved it! There weren't that many tourists plus I got to visit the Christmas market. And you can board a train that takes you to other places like Stirling or even loch Ness.
The Christmas market was pretty awful last Year, easily the worst since it started as the company that were setting it up pulled out at very short notice. This year's market should be much bigger and better.

stayed in Edinburgh for 5 years during my time at university and i loved it so much. Im back in Dunfermline now, just across the bridge but long term; looking to move back. I used to live right next to hollyrood and authurs seat was literally a 2/3 min walk away. Would climb it twice a day during the summer, one in the morning and one at night. Never been so fit and you'd be surprised by how therapeutic getting to enjoy a nice view can be.
Can't speak for parking as i dont drive but i do love the bus system, knowing that no matter what time it is, you are at most an hour away from being able to get a bus to where you need to go (unless they've changed it since covid)

@@gabrieljacobs1008 i went to heriot watt. Its a little outside the city but you can get a bus to it from pretty much everywhere. Had a few friends and napier and edinbutgh and i never heard anything bad about them other than the web design course from Napier. I did business with finance. Only city i ever lived in so probably the same for other cities but i loved it so much. best 5 years of my life.
If you are outside of scotland, im not sure how you would go about applying. I think i knew like 5 people out of 50 who was also from scotland, so it was all very diverse with no issues.
My husband and I visited Glasgow and Edinburgh in September. We took public transportation and walked all over Edinburgh. We didn't have any desire to rent a car. The taxi driver who drove us to Edinburgh airport when our vacation ended said Edinburgh is full of tourists all year, not just in the summer. We had no problems at Edinburgh airport for our 9a.m. flight.
It is full most of the year but July/August is pure crazy, as is New Year. As to July August I would not step foot on the Royal Mile as a city resident..

Trams extended their route last year. So york place doesnt have a stop now, its been moved just further down the street at picardy place..where the sherlock holmes statue is. The tram now goes down leith walk,constitution street,ocean terminal..for the royal yacht brittania and then stops at Newhaven
We recently visited and found the people to be wonderful and friendly. The food was fantastic and the tours and sites were amazing. Thank you Scotland !! We look forward to visiting again.

An area than often gets ignored is the Borders. We’ve got really great views and loads of places and hills where you can go walking. It’s a great place to visit.
Every time I go to Edinburgh it is throwing it down with heavy rain but it's still one of my favourite cities in the world so I guess that says a lot.
You missed the heavy wind gusts, an Edinburgh speciality. The streets intersecting with Princes Street act as funnels reinforcing the wind blowing from the Firth of Forth.
Did 2 day trips there from Glasgow in 2015. Also I saw the military tattoo. Beautiful city. Love from Canada 🇨🇦.

I took Scotrail around the country, spent time in Edinburg staying on the Royal Mile at the Hotel Missoni between Edinburg Castle and St. Giles Cathedral, across from Deacon Brodies. Spent the majority of my 3 weeks in Ft William for training (when the school was open) and the weekends in Edinburg and Glasgow. Edinburg was hands down better! Can't wait to visit there again!

went in july this year and i highly recommend getting out and away from the royal mile. i found the village of dean and honestly forgot I was in the capital city its so beautiful and quiet.
I moved up to the Central Belt 6 years ago and I still get a thrill looking up at the castle from Princes Street.
There is so much worth seeing outside of the usual tourist areas. Use the excellent public transport and explore more widely, A ten minute bus or tram trip will open everything up.

Yup, you are totally right. Edinburgh is working hard to give mobility back to pedestrians, bicycles and public transport, and I love it. The advice re not renting a car while staying here is awesome and people can spend the money in the town instead. Edinburgh airport is becoming an increasing pain in my behind. I am living here but flying about four times a year to visit family in Europe and I have the feeling it is getting worse with every year. It is really sad as it is often the first and last impression people have of their holiday.
The surrounding areas are good for example portobello by the sea is a 15 min bus ride to the center also East lothian and Glasgow 1 hr away fife is also very beautiful and near explore the boundaries .. dean village , New Haven , leith, portobello, north berwick … not just princes street and the castle 🏰 ❤
We didn't have much trouble at the Edinburgh Airport. Another option is Glasgow and hop on the train to Waverly

Best things for FREE: All the National Galleries, National Museum, Botanical Gardens, Walking Water of Leith, Carlton Hill, Arthur's Seat.
Hi Mark, native Scot here. A few points.
1) When you mention the Airport, you show the Parliament !
2) Did you mention Holyroodhouse as the place where the Queen stays in Scotland ? If you didn't it must be my hearing.
3) I agree that Edinburgh isn't car-friendly. On top of that, getting out can be a nightmare. I stay in Glasgow when I come home to Scotland (hello Mum) and finding the M8 motorway to head West can be a hassle without a good satnav.
4) One thing that annoys we native Scots (who want tourists to have a good time in Scotland) is a) the amount of tourist tat in some shops on the Royal Mile and also b) the general rundown atmosphere of Princes Street which used to be a great shopping area.
5) At Festival time, it might be a good idea to stay in Glasgow and commute. And another thing I find slightly annoying about the festival is the general lack of Scottish content (I know it wasn't meant to be a purely Scottish thing, but all the same ...).
6) Two or three things I can recommend. The fudge shop on the right hand side of the Royal Mile as you head towards Holyroodhouse, the Elephant House café where JK Rowling wrote her first stories as a single mother and the Museum of Scotland (which I believe is still free). Also the Zoo which is pretty cool as zoos go. And the Parliament building.

I know this is an old video as you are showing the old St James Centre. It is gone and has been turned into the St James Quarter. I think you need to come back to this city. There is, as you say, more to see in the city than the Royal Mile.
I don't know if you went to Edinburgh Zoo or down the Dean Village or to Leith and Portobello.
Also check Craigmillar Castle in the South of the city.
Oh and the Tram now runs from the Airport to Newhaven on the Coast of the Firth Of Forth.

And yes, going to the city centre by car is hellish.But Lothian Buses offer good transport at reasonable fares.

Love Edinburgh and our most recent visit was just a couple weeks ago. Had great weather. We walk or take public transit everywhere. We never rent a car in Scotland. We’ve stayed in both the New and the Old Town. Get your comfy shoes on. We logged in 18,000 to 20,000 steps every day.
I was in Scotland during the first week of September 2023...it was HOT! But I visited people I knew and they showed me around and not just the popular places. A great time to go with fewer tourists!

Hi Mark great video, as a local I can tell you Edinburgh is the only city in the world where all your journeys on foot are uphill both going to and coming back from your destination, invest in a good pair of shoes and you’ll not only enjoy your visit but you’ll get fitter as a result of your stay.
after many trips to Edinburgh (and Glasgow and the Highlands) have found we do not need a car at all, even our house sits off in some of the smaller villages have been very accessible for public transit, and it is not really that much slower. You do have to be aware of the occasional strikes, however they are very transparent and easy to plan around. Great info, we love Edinburgh and were just there.

If you really want a hidden gem of Edinburgh, technically it is part of Edinburgh but most people here wouldn't see it that way... take a day trip from South Queensferry by ferry to the Island of Inchcolm... it's often referred to as the Iona of the East and it's stunning... numbers of people allowed to land are controlled by Historic Scotland so it never gets too busy.
It comprises of the ruins of a 12th century ancient Abbey, 1st and 2nd world war defences, along with napoleonic war defences that you can explore freely... if you get lucky you might be able to pre-book a guided tour with one of the monks from the local area (not from the island, they no longer reside there) depending on time of year and which ferry sailing company you choose (i believe there are only two companies who sail there and it depends on time of year and they are both weather dependant?) to sail with.
You won't be disappointed and the the cost is stupidly cheap, even for a local... be warned though, take a picnic and water with you because the only shop on the small island is very limited in what it sells... also take warm clothing with you because even though it might be a warm/hot day on land, it can be damn cold out on the water!

We were just in Edinburgh at the end of Sept and we absolutely LOVED EDINBURGH !!! There was so much cool history and architecture there !!!
We visited the Castle which I thought was worth it. We also did 3 night time walking tours (The Witches tour, the Vaults tour (my favorite) and the City of the Dead Graveyard tour (amazing).
We stayed at the Stay Central on The Cowgate (right next to the Three Sisters Bar which was great) and it was only 1 block from the Royal Mile ( you just go up the Old Fish Market Close across the street and you come out right near St Giles Cathedral in the middle of the Royal Mile). We climbed Arthurs Seat which was rugged but so worth it (wear good running / hiking shoes)
We ate and drank at many of pubs in the Grass Market area (right at the end of The Cowgate Rd) and searched Greyfriars Kirk Yard for Harry Potter tomb stones. There was so much to see and do that didn't cost a lot or was even free. Everting that we did was within walking distance from The Stay Central Hotel(which was nice and the staff were very friendly and even stored our luggage on our last day so we could see a few last sights before our flight out. I would also highly recommend taking the Tram from the Airport to Princess Street and then getting an Uber to get to your hotel.
We had so much fun and still didn't see everything ( like the Ross Fountain and Scott Monument as well as many of the Museums which are all FREE !!!) WE WILL BE BACK !!! 0:02 0:02
It's definitely worth venturing away from the Old / New Town. Edinburgh has lots of beautiful neighbourhoods that are joined together and are walking distance from the city centre. Dean Village, Stockbridge, Comely Bank and Inverleith (home to the Botanical gardens) are well worth a visit. If you're lucky enough to visit on a sunny day, Portobello beach is a great option too.
Something that is a must when visiting Edinburgh is Mary Kings Close. It was a real 17th century street that lies underneath the Royal mile.
I was just in Edinburgh. It was so cold!! Otherwise, it is a great place to visit. The Tram was great for getting about from the airport. I also didn't have any issues getting through the airport.
In Edinburgh there are loads of buses but in tourist season often quicker to walk. Depending how long you are here probably a good idea to either buy the weekly/ 4 weekly pass or get a day ticket as you need.

5-6 o'clock is tea time in most of the UK anyway so turing up to the pub and expecting food after 8 and especially after 9 is and getting any is very lucky. Regardless if you're taking kids or not.
Yeh some chip shops are open about 6-8.
I don't understand that at all, we always eat between 7 or 8pm, have turned up at restaurants and been fine. 6pm is way too early for tea in my book

Visited Edinburgh in May of ‘23 and loved the city. One area you missed was Leith where we stayed and Shore which had a lot of restaurants and pubs if one is looking to get out of the Royal Mile for a bit. Also if looking to tour the palace etc, book tickets well in advance. We missed out on the palace as tickets were already sold out.

@@Unclepaulable May is a good time to visit before peak tourist season kicks in. Weather will be mild, but unpredictable. Bring some warmer clothing and rain jackets, just in case.

The first part is exactly why I ALWAYS get the train when I visit Edinburgh. I have absolutely no reason to use the car, especially when the train only takes 2-3 hours from where I live compared to a 4-5 hour drive followed by one of the worst places to bring your car to. Takes you straight into the city centre, where I can easily walk to all the main sights, or catch a bus to the university. The tram service has now opened its full extension eastwards to Leith, so you have more parts of the city reachable by tram, which has become a full cross-city service as opposed to just a city-airport shuttle.
Love Edinburgh (I still salivate over the thought of gelato from Mary's Milk Bar).
Edinburgh Christmas market with a fun fair is beautiful to visit too. Try the city sightseeing tour buses that take you all around and have audio that gives you the history. . You can hop on and hop off
As a Dundonian I love Edinburgh especially at Fringe Festival Time. A bit like London though do not think I could live there 365. Just too many people all the time although there are plenty quiet spots if you know were to look.
No-one I know will ever voluntarily drive in Edinburgh. In Glasgow? Yes. But not Edinburgh. If we need to go to Edinburgh for work my colleagues that drive will get the train. Edinburgh has really good public transport too. I love walking in Edinburgh but it can be a bit tricky figuring out how to get places for the first time. It is busy in Edinburgh and getting busier with every visit, but there's plenty to see outside of the tourist hospots too. I avoid the place entirely during the festival cos I don't like crowds. I spend more time in the New Town than the Old Town. I particularly like Stockbridge (especially when the market's on), Dean Village and the walk along Leith Water in between the two is one of my favourites.
I couldn't agree more. Trains every 15 minutes from Glasgow. New Town is nice. I prefer Glasgow though. Much more "real".
I often pickup my wife from town if its super late and means waiting ages on a bus or train (To Wallyford) and I really don't think drive is that horrible. Obviously this is mostly around midnight so only annoyance is the cyclists with 0 lights/reflectors and I'm not paying for parking in town somewhere as that gets crazy quick.
Although a tip for parking, you can park at Fountainpark for 2/3 hours for free, aslong as you visit one of the shops there :)
@@caolkyle Heading from the East into Edinburgh is a lot easier than heading from the west (by Car) all the Glasgow/Airport/Fife traffic shoehorned on that side is pretty bad. Us on the east have a couple of options and there is not that many of us!! Speaking of that come and Visit East Lothian when you are in Edinburgh, plenty Castles, Golf Courses and other touristy stuff

My wife and I stayed in a fantastic little bed and breakfast about a mile walk from the Royal Mile. Worked out perfectly and we could leave our car parked at the bnb.
Our kid (aka Frog) went to primary school on the Royal Mile - the journey home was a bit of a challenge in the summer! The tram line got extended earlier this year and goes all the way down to Newhaven.
Another random gem on the royal mile is the camera obscurer , lots of fun for the kids. Also don’t forget the scotch whisky experience which is fun for the adults
I live here. Newtown (it's only 150 years old, this flat). I'm glad you like it, so do we. Although struggling through horizontal sleet in the dark of 5pm in winter can be a bit of a strain. Heavy weather gear is sometimes a good idea.
