Whoever came up with this fix is a damn genius!!! A whole lot easier than dropping the downpipe.. exhaust.. heat shield..etc..and then dropping the assembly out the bottom..I just diesel geek fixed mine this morning..damn I must say it was easy..
I purchased the kit and washed the videos and everything went smooth, got it done. This really works just follow every step in the video . Thanks Dieselgeek im very thankful for your help.
@@jeremypena8786 took me about two hours due to the two t25 torx bit bolts that hold the shifter in totally rounded out..other than that probably in about an hour and a half..I had a shop charge me 462$ to replace one plastic bushing for first gear..talk about a ripoff..
@davidross-oo2vh I ended up doing this myself too just after making this comment. Not exactly sure how long it took but overall it wasn't bad. Was a tad tricky working the the saw hole but luckily I had no issues with the hex screws.
I found that the lower shaft bushing didn’t work. Anytime I pushed the shifter down it would get stuck and I’d have to pull up on it. Even re assembled it did it. Put back in the old bushing and had no problem with it.
This is a somewhat common complaint. The solution, every time, is to remove the debris in the stick housing forcing the bushing closed which binds the stick. Usually the debris are degraded bits of the original bushing. Compressed air and a bit of brake clean can work wonders.
Well Im not sure how common this is. Ive done this on 3 cars now, of course i go to do this on multiple daily driver and something goes south. My front to back lower bushing that fits the 10mm bushing had a plastic cable end and the bushing was moulded in, instead of just sitting in. There was no way that bushing was fitting, i drilled it out with a 9/16s drill and it took a ton of massaging and pushing to finally get it to take. Just curious if you guys were aware of this cable style. I think i pulled the box out of a turbo beetle from the yard. It was a PITA to do in the car lol. Both other cars i did them outside of the car
@@dieselgeekdotcom if I strip it completely ill give that a whirl, thanks! Going to try and impact it off rather than keep trying with the ratchet first
Do you know the bolt size and thread size of the bolt that holds that arm that keeps that first gear getter in? My car won’t go in 1st easily and won’t go in reverse at all because of that bushing but my bolt is stripped and I can get any bolt from the local hardware store
Hi, I had this problem, step 1, tryand adjust your cables, literally a micro movement is all it may take, reverse is the high up cable end and 1st through 6th is the lower nearest to front end of car cable end,, step 2 its a safer bet to select 2nd gear first then go into 1st or reverse if its not engaging at that moment, it will save you damaging your bushings and other components down the line..
So when replacing the bushing where you need to drill the whole and install the snap ring supplied with the kit do you also need to install the factory c clip as well or does the supplied snap ring keep everything held together?
Unfortunately I stripped out the t-25 torx screw holding the bracket on. Tried every trick in the book to get it out. Is drilling the screw out an option or would that damage the shifter?
Hi, please ..can you advise on a vw golf mk 4 actual gear stick replacement as i think mine is broken inside as i can only select gears 3&4 .. is it a gearbox out kinda job or can be done from inside the car .. it all looks plastic and moulded to a large degree ! Thanks
I had the shifter out since it was going into a Corrado. If you remove the shifter box the sheetmetal "floor" comes off quick and easy with needlenose pliers. Makes swapping bushing inside the box a piece of cake.
I bought this kit but your 5mm adjustment pin does not fit. I have an mk4 gti and the holes are smaller. I measured them. They are exatly 4.7 mm a 4.5 mm allen will fit but there is some play. Your pin will absolutley not fit! I would have to drill the holes out in order for your pin to fit.
Hi, that's a new one to us. Maybe you have an after market cabin shifter. I'm curious to see what you have going on there. Please email us directly at sales at dieselgeek dot com -tyler
I just ripped a shifter from a junkyard Mk4 GTI and it had 5mm holes. I've installed a few 02J shifters in older cars and never seen one with smaller holes. You must get part numbers off those bits so we can see what's up.
Is there any other way of taking the shifter stick out without drilling a hole? Not the best solution in making a hole in the standard shifter mechanisim.
Either drill the hole..or take the downpipe off.. catalytic converter off.. heat shield off..the entire belly pan heat shield that is..and then remove the shift box from under the car on a lift ...ugh you had better get the drill lol
I literally used a T20, nearly stripped the screw, got it out, hit play and heard "don't use a T20, it'll strip the screw, that's why we include this one," ROFL. Gotta watch the directions FIRST!
That's funny. Way back in 2006 I was installing a panzer plate for a customer. I was having a bad time. I called Jim and the first thing he asked me was "did you read the instructions?" -tyler
I'm a new owner of a 2002 beetle turbo s with no reverse firrst or second gear. I plan on replacing the clutch anyway so my question is can these bushings be changed easier with the transmission dropped

The plastic front to back cable on the MK4 is quite rare. If you run into that please contact us so we may provide all the details.
Cool stuff!
How did you guys take off the torx bolt?
I just tried with the right sized t25 and immediately stripped part of it....
Just drill the head about 1/8 in deep with a 3/32 inch bit. Once the head is off, the shank will spin out by hand

M5x12. We include one with the FGG because it's easy to strip the T25

You do not need to reinstall the factory disc-clip

Yes, principals are all the same.

Looks like you posted 11 months ago, so probably already fixed it, but my guess would be that it's a broken shifter cable end up on the transmission.
@@toolmaster120 trans was toast I can adjust these shifters in my sleep now
Now exhaust fumes are going to get into car with that hole ?
False. The box already has big holes on the other side.
And the box is inside the car.

Sounds like a side to side cable problem. Use Jim's locating slop video to diagnose. ua-cam.com/video/7HBE5vycg-4/v-deo.html
Would this be easier to go at from underneath the car and dropping exhaust?
I don't think so. Especially on an all-wheel drive car.

What sort of grease do you recommend using on those moving parts?
No need with the materials we use.

Will I have to drill into the Audi TT shift box as well for this fix?
Yes mk1 tt is the same box, different stick.
For the one bushing underneath with the snap ring clamp - is it bad to reuse the factory snap on clip thing?
If you don't use the external retaining ring that comes with the bushing the cable will fall off again.
Do you have a video for the shifter for a 99-05 Audi TT?
MK1 TT is the same as MK4 except without serviceable shift bushings.
