      Hi there. I've been watching the videos for awhile now, especially more so since i bought my 20th AE gti, but im running into bit of an issue. Since i bought the car, initially inspecting it the problem wasnt there because he drove the car to meet me, and it was warm and up to temp when i looked at it. Drove it 4.5 hours home, no real issues other than a CEL for the o2 sensors because of the aftermarket exhaust stuff. BUT back to the temps. Warming the car up is a pain. it will idle okay but then itll start going from -20hg to -10hg on the boost gauge and the whole car will be super jerky. just sitting there at idle. I know you're not supposed to drive it til its warmed up, but i tried moving it in the driveway last night and when i put it in reverse, and tried to back up, the whole car bogged down and didnt really wanna move.. i have a video of the -20 to -10 thing too if you maybe wanted to see that? My best guess is there is a vacuum leak SOMEWHERE. but that doesnt make sense at the same time because it only happens when the car is cold?? anyways.. I love the videos, You are great at what you do! Any help is appreciated though haha.

      HumbleMechanic hey hope all is well I’m having this issue where reverse will go in without pressing down making first gear really hard to find. I’m a ford tech owning a VW Jetta tdi manual trans. Any idea of what it can be?? I replaced the friction slider since that was worn out but still having the issue. Pls let me know what you think it may be. Thanks in advance

    I'm just typing this comment to attest that, impossible as it seems, the difficult bushing can be installed without drilling the metal case. The Humble mechanic said in one comment that he was able to do it with a screwdriver, unfortunately that's all he said as far as I know. I don't know how he did it exactly, but gave me the confidence to try it myself. I did it in the following way (excuse my poor English): I installed the bushing in the shifter applying some vaseline, then inserted the shifter end inside the loop of the cable (with more vaseline). Now comes the step where I departed from the official dieselgeek procedure: I opened the snap ring with snap ring pliers, I put a little nut to lock the snap ring in an opened position (you can use whatever you want, I just happened to have a small nut near me), I glued a piece of sturdy wire to the nut and bent the wire in the shape I needed to insert it from above, along the shifter. Then it's just a surgery game, you'll need patience here. You need to insert the snap ring on the bushing, almost blindly, (I put a flashlight on the other opening of the shifter metal case, where you access the side-to-side bushing). Make sure the cable is completely pulled in the bushing or the crease where the snap ring must sit won't be accessible. I had to insert the snap ring with its opening facing down, because there is no room otherwise. Once you think the snap ring is in place, you give the wire a firm push downwards to remove the nut and lock the snap ring in the bushing. Insert your finger through any of the openings and make sure the snap ring is well positioned and won't fall off. It should spin on the crease of the bushing. If it doesn't, try to push the ring inside with your fingers or a screwdriver, it could be only partially inside the crease. It's a good idea to practice a few times outside the car, with the wire and the shifter with the bushing installed. If you're not able to insert the snap ring in the bushing using the wire-nut thing, don't even try to do it inside the shifter case. Good luck!

If I watch enough of these R32 series vids, I'll be able to keep enjoying my' 04 GTI for many years to come; however, that sucks cuz I really want a good excuse to buy a '18 GSW. No need in getting rid of a perfectly good, capable car w/the only thing going against it is iits age (14yo) and it still has all of its original bushings. Other than that, there is nothing wrong w/the car to warrant a replacement and endure another car payment.

    This mkiv project of yours is costing me a lot of money! Every time I watch an R32 vid I find something else I want to rehab on my mkiv. Already have the Sigma 5 installed and just bought the DG First Gear Getter to clean up the S2S movement (the other bushing are still good) that will be installed when I replace the brake cables if it ever stops snowing here. Gonna pick up a set of those Tyrolsport bracket bushing to finish the job as well.

    Gonna have to try this. Picking up a yellow 20th Anniversary GTI this Friday. The shifter feels decent but I feel like there's some room for improvement. Cars in impeccable shape. No dents, only a couple chips in it. Couldn't find rust on it anywhere. Only downside is no OEM seats. There's no backseat and front seats are Corbeau's. Also has an R Spec front bumper that's vinyl wrapped. It's gonna bit a little work but gonna move it back to OEM and preserve it. I only got to test drive it for a little bit but fell in love with it.

    While driving my GTI 337 iin the street my shifter got stuck on 5 and 6 gear. It just wouldn't move out of that side. I pulled over, popped the hood open, and I managed to move the links out of 5 gear so I went back in and drove it without usimg 5 or 6 gear. It saved me a tow. I'm hoping the issue has to do with these bushings and not the transmission. Thanks for this video.

    This week I finally got the kit from Dieselgeek and yesterday I changed it. I can confirm what Charles said. IT IS POSSIBLE to do that from the inside of the car without removing box or driling hole. I don't have my own DIY, but if you have some technical knowlige, and you can make some things on your car, you can do it by yourself. Of course you need tools, like snap ring pliers, screwdrivers and other. The worst part was to get off front to back cable from the shifter stick and put the cable on the stick again with new bushings from dieselgeek on it. It is realy tight and it was the hardest part. I put snap ring on that bushing in one take. Other was okey. so IT CAN BE DONE FROM THE CABIN.

    As always, keep up with the great content. Curious as to what you think about double stacking short shifters. I have a MKIV R as well and already have the EIP short throw and side to side on top the tranny ( had it on there since I bought it years ago) and it works, I had a little extra $$ a while back when I ordered my adjustable rear control arms and bought a B&M style short throw on a whim since it wasn't terribly expensive. I'm just so used to it now and sometimes forget how long the throw is on a stock VW. I bought the car brand new back in 04 with 17 miles on it and now have 175k+. Now only if I can stop toying with it and get going on my 88 Jetta coupe 2.5 transplant.

    I recently installed a forge short shift kit. And since I cant seem to shift into 2nd or 3rd without grinding. This is after a stage 2 clutch kit install as well. Bled the clutch. Adjusted the linkage many times. Referring back to the diesel geek video. And still no solution. Would the bushings make a difference in this? That's my next hope at least. If I double clutch I can usually get into 2nd and 3rd without grinding but even then sometimes it's not perfect. I do feel alot of play in side to side motion while the shifter is in any gear. 2013 gti.

    Hey Charles.
    I lost reverse and 2nd because of bad bushings on my shifter box!

    • @RedondoBeach2
      @RedondoBeach2 4 роки тому

      Did you repair it with the Diesel Geek bushings and shifter kit? If you did, I'm interested in better understanding how it's possible to replace the shifter cable bushings underneath the stick shift housing without removing the housing and without drilling a hole in the housing. This video briefly talks about it being a difficult job but not much more. Any additional insight from you, Charles or others with experience would be helpful.

    Great video Charles. I wish you could have done a DIY doing your method vs drilling the shifter box.

    • @HumbleMechanic

      I wish that too. But there was no way to get the camera in to see what I Was looking at. Plus most of it was working blind. HAHA.
      Now that I have an 02J shifter for the GTI, I might take it apart and try to explain it.

      @@HumbleMechanic It's right time to explain it how to change these bushings without drilling hole or remove it from the car. I'll do that, when I get the bushing. It would be nice, if you could explain it. Thank you

    • @RedondoBeach2
      @RedondoBeach2 4 роки тому

      @@ponteral7023 I assume you completed this job on your VW by now. Can you please talk in detail about how you were able to replace the cable bushings under the shifter housing without drilling through the housing? I understand the basic idea, but do not understand how there's enough space between the stick shifter and the housing to allow installation of the new hardware.

      @@RedondoBeach2 I tried for about 2 hours, wasn't working with the snap ring pliers I have. Just drill the hole and save yourself the trouble. I 3d printed a cap to cover the hole

    • @RedondoBeach2
      @RedondoBeach2 4 роки тому

      @@TheDemoncaller Thank you. The job seems impossible without drilling a hole in the housing or going underneath and dropping the exhaust and heat shield. Follow up question: what do you like and dislike about the Diesel Geek shifter bushing kit? Also, did you install the Diesel Geek kit on the transmission side of the cables too, and if so, what do you like and dislike about that part of the kit?

      Yup - thing is I know how to drive a manual or stick transmission. I've done it on the lower deck of I-93 in Boston. Your left leg gets a workout in that. In fact highways around here are masses of stupidity. Not the roadway themselves but the people on them.
      Like where I live - I'm near what is called the Viaduct. It's a section of I-95 that connects to RI-146, RI-10 and RI-6. Plus Providence Place Mall on ramps and off ramps. All in a space that's a bit less than a half mile. And people don't know how to merge. Me I throw the signal on and push my way in.
