Granted, you can buy them over time, but taking the time to have those fair fights saves you money to spend elsewhere, like Fighter Spirits from alternate costumes (like the Koopalings) so you don't have to play Classic Mode with Bowser Jr. eight times or spirits from the money shop (the spirit shops will eventually run out of new spirits, so you're stuck with the money shop and the spirit board during the last third of getting a 100% spirit collection). In any case, snacks and items will become very useful for going towards said 100% collection, for mass-leveling enhanceable spirits (in addition to the Gym) and getting your 4-Stars maxed to tackle on legends on the spirit board.

actually it has to do with the power gap between your Spirit team and the opponent's Spirit level. you get more rewards the closer the gap is. if you beat a 3000-power Spirit with, let's say, a 9000-power team, you're still only gonna get just a few coins.
About the rant with the auto pick choosing weaker spirits: Due to the relation between team power and rewards, the game may sometimes try to make the battle fair for more rewards, like in the clip you showed while talking about it, the game was trying to even the 1600 TP from the enemy and have yours be around that number.
Yup, the auto picker will always select spirits that are as close as possible to the enemy power level... and so, in especially tough battles, some manual over riding is required.

About the 8 people max on the arena, for some stupid weird reason, the spectators laag the game for the rest of the players if they have bad connection... So... Yeah, just imagine with 100 people there.
This is because fighting games rely on a setup where the server is as stable as the players in the battle. Since they are spectating, they are placed in the server. Maybe a way to fix this would be to stream the battle and send it to the spectators, so they are not put in the server and do not take up space.
Don't worry dude. There are a good chunk of people like you that actually like WoL. Its just that, the mode is mixed in reception right now. You have the "enjoyed" side and the "disappointment" side when it comes to this mode.
Online has been good overall for me. If it is a 1v1 there is no significant input lag. 4 player can be problematic though. That said, input lag is experienced in like, most online fighting games. So I'm more mad because the lack of my dear Home Run Contest

The most mindblowing thing about smash is actually what Sakrurai (that's the guy who made the game) had to go through to make it. For those of you who didn't know, the creator of the game has this arm condition which puts him in a lot of pain every time he uses it to do anything, especially program a fighting game. He even had to get a special type of mouse just so he wouldn't strain himself when he clicks. And despite all of that, he still worked his butt off to make this game for us and put so much into it. The fact that he didn't let this arm condition stop him from making this game shows just how much he cares about it. He made it clear that this would be his last smash game, and while it's sad to see him go, I'm thankful that he blessed us with this masterpiece. #ThankYouSakurai
Wow. That is something I did not know. What I did know, from GameXplain posting his Famitsu interviews, is just how much work he did on the project itself. How much he had to negotiate with companies to get the rights to every character. How much work was done on building stages, the music, and so much more. And I alwaya think back to the one time when Arlo said: "I really hope Sakurai isn't as involved in the new Smash game, and that he's just helping out". But no. He worked harder than ever on this game. It's amazing. But he serioualy needs to take a vacation.
It's been affecting him for a while. To anyone who thinks that he needs to take a break though, they don't realise that he already did for at least a year, but came back to work on Smash Ultimate because it was killing him to stay at home, not working on what he loved, and feeling useless. He doesn't feel comfortable giving up his work no matter how painful it gets. He has stated before that he has slowed down though to compensate, and hopes that Nintendo and his peers don't view him as losing value because of that.
The only service is not just bad, it's shameful. In Brawl and 4 I didn't care as much because it was free, but this time we're forced to pay to use it, and seeing as payed service perform so poorly is just honestly insulting to paying costumers.
The lag while playing online happened in Smash 4 too. The best way to avoid it is to buy a third party Ethernet to USB adapter and use a wired internet connection for the Switch. Me and my friends each have one, but we all play competitive.

I feel after all the DLC and additional features being added, this will 100% be the definitive smash game. Stage builder is back and it’s better than ever. The community creations are great and if they continue to expand with more features, this game would have so much replay value.
The Ness's Father spirit had me laughing for a good half an hour. The spirit is just the phone that Ness uses to call his father in Earthbound, you fight against Ness and an invisible Snake in Onett and when you unlock the spirit for yourself the buff it gives you is extra movement speed at the start of a match. It's hilarious.
I'm glad we have the same controller choice of swapping the special and jump buttons. Also, the auto picker does that to match the power level of your team and the opponents'. Equal power level=more rewards.
It doesnt bother me that the recommended spirit arent usually one of your higher level spirits. You usually get more for a reward if you use a weaker team, and it isn't hard to sort your spirits by power and find a stronger one if you need it.
I had 7 of my closest friends come over one Friday night and we played smash for hours. Some of the most fun I've had in a while. The thrill of getting a new challenger approaching and routing on whoever won the match to secure the character was amazing.
Arlo mentioned Kirby Star Allies dripping out content I wonder if it means he plans to give the game a revisit and review the DLC (or at least stop making it his main Nintendo punching bag)
World of Light would be OP if there was a cutscene everytime you go into a portal and when you conplete the portal. It would give a more story feeling to it. I do like the small cutscenes when you defeat certain amount of spirits to weaken the evil or unlock something that you have access to now.
I had a dream last night where I was at an e sorts smash Bros tournament, Arlo was one of the main players. Most people where dressed up as Arlo some had different colored fur and even some female Arlos. But anyone dressed up as Arlo randomly yelled at each other. But anyone who wasn't dressed up as Arlo was tackled by several Arlos and forced into an Arlo costume . Eventually everyone in the building was an Arlo. It flooded out in the city, makeing new Arlos as we spread. I don't remember what happened after that. I woke up crying.
In regards to the core smash expierence, Smash Ultimate is definitely one of the best games in the series, really only possibly contended by Melee from a competitive perspective: 70+ characters, 100+ stages, fast gameplay, more options then ever. But from a content and mode variety perspective, Ultimate is really lacking. As somebody who plays smash primarily single player, the fact that the game is pretty much nothing but the core smash modes, with no Home Run Contest, Break the Targets, Race to the Finish, Smash run, or any sort of platforming level Adventure mode is a serious dissapointment. I like having other stuff if I need a break from normal gameplay, and that's just not present in Ultimate. Even trophies are gone, so I can;t browse and read their descriptions. I realize this might be sacrlilfious to others, but I would have gladly cut 30 stages or so and even some veterans like Dr. Mario, Pichu, Young Link, etc to get those modes or trophies in.
I'm really not liking the ai in this one. It's awesome that they're smart enough to combo your butt clear from 0 to KO, but the problem comes I think in the lower difficulty. It feels like they couldn't figure out how to "dumb down" the ai for lower difficulty settings, so they settled on leaving them super smart (ie, combo time) but then increase how often they "make mistakes." I've both experienced and heard others talk about getting demolished by a challenger, only to rechallenge them and they jump off the map 3 seconds in. I've had a level 5 Ryu that was doing a great job jumping over me to avoid my attacks. Until I stopped moving just to see what would happen and he spent nearly a minute just jumping back and forth. Also whyyyyyyyy can't we use the switch record feature?!?
@@qwertylerqw3 While I do agree with the thought, games that let you record take a 5 second hit in performance in my experience. That's not bad at all. I think they should have a setting you can change to allow it, and it explains that it may momentarily affect performance when you turn it on.
Thaddeus Hamlet I do wish it was left up to the user to enable it. Some games like Enter The Gungeon are a laggy mess and would be improved by disabling it and some games don’t have it that could like Ultimate. I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo enables it for Smash in the future though, hopefully soon.
I actually wanted the specific unlocks for characters. I like discovering the various conditions for fighters to be available and see any potential references they might have. It would honestly get me to try out more of the game than just back out of World of Light every 10 minutes to challenge a new fighter. Fortunately, the Challenge Board has me hooked on trying new parts of the game
"Not meant to be marathoned" I played through World of Light Twice (NG+). Have every spirit except the pikachu one from buying let's go (which yes, does bug me...). and have almost everyone up to lvl 99. I KNOW I HAVE PROBLEM'S AND I DON'T CARE!
Nice review! I'd give it the same score as you. I love this game but the minigames are missing to me. I love the home run contest, break the targets, board the platforms and race to the finish (it makes sense why the bonus trophy game from melee isn't here) and also online isn't great sometimes.

Sakurai's reason for not making Subspace 2 is pretty stupid. He doesn't want the clips put on UA-cam because he thinks "It'll ruin the experience for gamers who want to play it" EVEN though this is totally unrealistic and just false.
Hey Arlo, I wanted to clarify something about spirits, at 10:56 you say you don’t understand why it gives you weaker spirits over stronger ones when autopicking. Basically when you use a stronger spirit you get less rewards, so it tries to give you a spirit equal to or weaker than the enemy spirit.
I wouldn't enjoy World of Light if it was like Subspace Emissary. If they're going to bring it back I'd want it as a separate mode so I can ignore it if I want to and still enjoy World of Light.
The main reason I love Super Smash Bros. is because it's a celebration of video games. I mean, where else can you find Mega Man, Pit, Simon, Snake, Mario, Sans, Joker, Banjo, Cloud, and Dark Samus all together? Plus as long as Sakurai keeps listening, we'll get new characters (the day Reimu finally makes it into Smash will be the best day of my life.)
just to clarify, the auto pick system chooses lvl 1 spirits because they have abilities that are more suitable for that specific battle, and also considers the risk/reward situation (remember that playing with weaker spirits gives you more gifts at the end of the match)

I feel after all the DLC and additional features being added, this will 100% be the definitive smash game. Stage builder is back and it’s better than ever. The community creations are great and if they continue to expand with more features, this game would have so much replay value.

The Ness's Father spirit had me laughing for a good half an hour.
The spirit is just the phone that Ness uses to call his father in Earthbound, you fight against Ness and an invisible Snake in Onett and when you unlock the spirit for yourself the buff it gives you is extra movement speed at the start of a match.
It's hilarious.
I'm glad we have the same controller choice of swapping the special and jump buttons. Also, the auto picker does that to match the power level of your team and the opponents'. Equal power level=more rewards.
Less power level= even MORE rewards

It doesnt bother me that the recommended spirit arent usually one of your higher level spirits.
You usually get more for a reward if you use a weaker team, and it isn't hard to sort your spirits by power and find a stronger one if you need it.

I had 7 of my closest friends come over one Friday night and we played smash for hours. Some of the most fun I've had in a while. The thrill of getting a new challenger approaching and routing on whoever won the match to secure the character was amazing.
Arlo mentioned Kirby Star Allies dripping out content I wonder if it means he plans to give the game a revisit and review the DLC (or at least stop making it his main Nintendo punching bag)

World of Light would be OP if there was a cutscene everytime you go into a portal and when you conplete the portal.
It would give a more story feeling to it. I do like the small cutscenes when you defeat certain amount of spirits to weaken the evil or unlock something that you have access to now.
I had a dream last night where I was at an e sorts smash Bros tournament, Arlo was one of the main players. Most people where dressed up as Arlo some had different colored fur and even some female Arlos. But anyone dressed up as Arlo randomly yelled at each other. But anyone who wasn't dressed up as Arlo was tackled by several Arlos and forced into an Arlo costume . Eventually everyone in the building was an Arlo. It flooded out in the city, makeing new Arlos as we spread. I don't remember what happened after that. I woke up crying.

In regards to the core smash expierence, Smash Ultimate is definitely one of the best games in the series, really only possibly contended by Melee from a competitive perspective: 70+ characters, 100+ stages, fast gameplay, more options then ever.
But from a content and mode variety perspective, Ultimate is really lacking. As somebody who plays smash primarily single player, the fact that the game is pretty much nothing but the core smash modes, with no Home Run Contest, Break the Targets, Race to the Finish, Smash run, or any sort of platforming level Adventure mode is a serious dissapointment. I like having other stuff if I need a break from normal gameplay, and that's just not present in Ultimate. Even trophies are gone, so I can;t browse and read their descriptions. I realize this might be sacrlilfious to others, but I would have gladly cut 30 stages or so and even some veterans like Dr. Mario, Pichu, Young Link, etc to get those modes or trophies in.

I'm really not liking the ai in this one.
It's awesome that they're smart enough to combo your butt clear from 0 to KO, but the problem comes I think in the lower difficulty.
It feels like they couldn't figure out how to "dumb down" the ai for lower difficulty settings, so they settled on leaving them super smart (ie, combo time) but then increase how often they "make mistakes."
I've both experienced and heard others talk about getting demolished by a challenger, only to rechallenge them and they jump off the map 3 seconds in.
I've had a level 5 Ryu that was doing a great job jumping over me to avoid my attacks.
Until I stopped moving just to see what would happen and he spent nearly a minute just jumping back and forth.
Also whyyyyyyyy can't we use the switch record feature?!?
Recording video takes processing power and RAM. Most likely they chose performance over video capture, which is something I wish more games did.
@@qwertylerqw3 While I do agree with the thought, games that let you record take a 5 second hit in performance in my experience. That's not bad at all.
I think they should have a setting you can change to allow it, and it explains that it may momentarily affect performance when you turn it on.

I do wish it was left up to the user to enable it. Some games like Enter The Gungeon are a laggy mess and would be improved by disabling it and some games don’t have it that could like Ultimate.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo enables it for Smash in the future though, hopefully soon.
I actually wanted the specific unlocks for characters. I like discovering the various conditions for fighters to be available and see any potential references they might have. It would honestly get me to try out more of the game than just back out of World of Light every 10 minutes to challenge a new fighter. Fortunately, the Challenge Board has me hooked on trying new parts of the game

I played through World of Light Twice (NG+). Have every spirit except the pikachu one from buying let's go (which yes, does bug me...). and have almost everyone up to lvl 99.

Nice review! I'd give it the same score as you. I love this game but the minigames are missing to me. I love the home run contest, break the targets, board the platforms and race to the finish (it makes sense why the bonus trophy game from melee isn't here) and also online isn't great sometimes.

The primary spirit is always chosen to be a bit below the power of the enemy spirit because that gives you the most rewards after battle.

Sakurai's reason for not making Subspace 2 is pretty stupid. He doesn't want the clips put on UA-cam because he thinks "It'll ruin the experience for gamers who want to play it" EVEN though this is totally unrealistic and just false.
That was for Smash 4, for Ultimate it was not having enough resources and time to make cutscenes for 70+ characters

Hey Arlo, I wanted to clarify something about spirits, at 10:56 you say you don’t understand why it gives you weaker spirits over stronger ones when autopicking. Basically when you use a stronger spirit you get less rewards, so it tries to give you a spirit equal to or weaker than the enemy spirit.

The main reason I love Super Smash Bros. is because it's a celebration of video games. I mean, where else can you find Mega Man, Pit, Simon, Snake, Mario, Sans, Joker, Banjo, Cloud, and Dark Samus all together? Plus as long as Sakurai keeps listening, we'll get new characters (the day Reimu finally makes it into Smash will be the best day of my life.)
just to clarify, the auto pick system chooses lvl 1 spirits because they have abilities that are more suitable for that specific battle, and also considers the risk/reward situation (remember that playing with weaker spirits gives you more gifts at the end of the match)
