    Never got to play 3D world and wanted to fully complete all levels in the game before beginning Bowser’s fury. However after completing the main story I noticed there was post story levels. After completing those I noticed there was more. And more. And more.

      3D World has the best postgame in there entire 3D Mario series. While it's kinda meaty, it doesn't feel too long and tediois (like Odyssey and Galaxy 2). It has the right length and right challenge.

    15:37 The story actually does get explained as to why Bowser was all angry. It’s explained during the credits with Jr’s drawings. I’m sure 80% of people were confused with the drawings and thought it was just there for looks. The story goes that Bowser, Bowser Jr and their minions decided to take a visit to lake lap cat for a nice vacation. Once Bowser takes a nap, Jr gets the idea to paint a face on Bowser while he’s asleep. Bowser than wakes up to see his face is all messed up, and naturally gets really angry about it. So angry that the black paint Jr used to make the face starts merging with Bowser with his anger, turning him into a giant blind raging monster, not only destroying his own ships, but also effecting lake lap cat in its entirety.

    The official reason that Bowser's so mad is that he and Bowser Jr. were going on a vacation to Lake Lapcat, and then during the journey Bowser laid down and took a nap. Junior thought it would be a good Idea to prank his dad by covering him in black paint while he slept, and while it's not confirmed whether it was because of the paint being magic or something, or that Bowser was just that mad, for whatever reason Bowser lost control of himself, grew to tremendous size, destroyed his own fleet, and started roaming the Lake for some reason.

    • @chrange9714
      @chrange9714 3 роки тому +86

      The pictures shown during the credits more so depict that Jr. made the goop in order to take over the Islands similar to Mario Sunshine. Bowser didn't really want to do this however, and more so just wanted to relax. Jr. was of course upset with this idea and got bored that his dad was just napping, so he thought it'd be funny to prank him and draw on his face with the goop he made. This backfired and completely corrupted Bowser and the rest you know. The paint being magic or whatever is pretty self explanatory. It works similar to the goop in Sunshine, and Bowser and his crew are always making new things to take over stuff with.

    • @DaNintendude
      @DaNintendude 3 роки тому +44

      Paint in general seems to have weird properties in the Mario world. Color Splash shows paint as a life force, and has a very similar story with Black Paint possessing Bowser and making him more powerful. You also have Sunshine, where Bowser Jr is implied to have created some of the bosses, enemies, and even the Yoshis out of paint.

    • @chrange9714
      @chrange9714 3 роки тому +21

      @@DaNintendude That's where the black goop comes from here. Just like in Sunshine, except the goop isn't made from E Gadd's brush, Jr. just made it himself. That's probably why it's so imperfect and basically corrupts anything it touches.

    • @DaNintendude
      @DaNintendude 3 роки тому +12

      @@chrange9714 ???
      There's no evidence whatsoever that Bowser Jr created the goop himself. What did he even create the goop out of?
      And I don't really even see a reason why Bowser Jr would want to take over Lake Lapcat.
      EDIT: Jr probably did create the goop, but I doubt he made it to take over the islands. that doesn't make any sense. And if he _did_ create it to take over the islands, why on earth would he ever paint all over his dad with it??

    • @chrange9714
      @chrange9714 3 роки тому +10

      @@DaNintendude There's all the evidence. It's heavily implied with the pictures during the end credits. He clearly made it to take over the islands. Why would he even bring it with them if he wasn't? Jr. loves to take over things just like how Bowser does sometimes.
      I already explained why he painted Bowser with it. He was bored that Bowser was just sleeping and decided to prank him by drawing on his face with it. This of course backfired immensely.

    Funny story: When I was a wee 10 year old even I forgot it came out and got it for the Wii U in February 2014. I played it, beat it and thought it was bland. I found it bland because we had just come off of one or more Mario games a year for 5 years straight. I guess I was getting burnt out on Mario. Later on like many I came around to it. Glad Nintendo gave up on yearly Mario releases. Pokémon needs to take some tips.

      My favorite 3d Mario until now is 3dWorld with Galaxy 2 and 1 being close.
      The only reason 3Dworld feels better for me is exactly the speed(and I only played the Wiiu version) the movement in the Galaxy games just feels a bit too slow for my taste even if they do give a bit more freedom and some galaxies in Galaxy 1 arent too interesting to replay over and over, Galaxy 2 and 3d World on the other hand has hands down the best level designs and interesting levels, if the movement in Galaxy 2 was just a bit more faster it would be my number 1 game.

    I used to be very harsh on 3D world. I bought it again on switch to give it another go and I must say, I take it all back. This game is actually a secret masterpiece. All killer no filler from beginning to end. Sure one may not like that it's an easier game, or that it has linear and very short levels. To me, those aren't really flaws, but more like a different approach to Mario and I'm all for it. Give it a shot with an open mind and you may enjoy it as much as I did!

  • @Jack-pg2ez

    Thoughts i had while watching:
    - The timer serves a useful purpose for coop. To get the highest score at the end of a level, a group can be incentived to fight eachother, throw friends off ledges etc, rather than progressing. The timer acts as a gentle reason to actually progress through the level and cooperate to some degree. The timer almost never runs out, but exists to streamline the multiplayer process
    - While i can see why one would be disappointed at 3d world if they treat it as a single player adventure, i think the game isnt attempting to be that. The multiplayer aspect is pushed on the box art, the trailers, and each level was clearly designed with it in mind. At least to me, multiplayer is the core 3d world experience, with the single player being the less recommended option, and so it may be better to judge the game with that perspective - with a group, 3d world is elevated in almost every area
    - The older i get, the more i appreciate games that focus on one specifc core experience that i can't get elsewhere. I play lots of games, but almost nothing feels like 3D world coop, and thats a big part of the appeal to me
    Great review, always enjoy hearing your perspective! Love you Arlo

    I always thought that the movement speed increase was due to bowser’s fury. Since the controls had to be the same between both games they had to increase the movement speed for an open world campaign.

    • @conorrynne9694
      @conorrynne9694 3 роки тому +17

      I mean, it would have been perfectly acceptable for them to have 2 different movement speeds, as they're completely different styles of games.
      I think it's more likely the case that Nintendo knew running speed was a common complaint and that, thanks to modern source code preservation, it was easier on a technical level for Nintendo to port and modify some Wii and WiiU games than for many of their other games, especially older ones. Case in point; almost all of Nintendo's 'ports' from earlier gens rely almost entirely on emulation. While this allows them to easily 'port' the game, it makes making changes beyond simple asset swapping a nightmare.
      As for why this was ever a problem, it used to be that once the retail game image was built, the source code was disposed of, but in the age of online patching and remasters, most companies realise that's a very stupid thing to do now. Having the original source code to hand still makes making these modifications far easier.

      @@conorrynne9694 I don't think it's necessary to have the same controls between the 2 games aswell, but it's usually the Nintendo way. It's a habit of theirs. Hehe no, changing speed is one of the easiest thing you can program.

    I have one problem with bowser's fury. The bowser blocks, while interesting in concept, are pointless. You just have to happen to be near one when bowser is out, or else you have to wait around doing nothing until he arrives. There are a ton across the game world, but breaking one and getting the shine makes bowser leave, meaning you couldn't get another one even if you had enough time to get to them. There is only one point in the game where you can feasibly get them all without waiting around a bunch, and that's at the very end of the game when bowser stops leaving, but if you weren't thinking about it and fought bowser instead, the permabowser time never comes back in post-game and you're stuck waiting around for him again to get them.
    I feel like the only reason they're in the game at all is to incentivize you to buy the bowser amiibo so you can call him whenever you want.

      idk, wasnt really a problem for me. I learned pretty quickly that i should just focus on others shines during the day, and note where bowser blocks are, then when fury bowser came out, i just abadon whatever shine i was going for and head to a bowser block.
      doing this, I never once found myself waiting for fury bowser, since it was something i would only do when he came out. there are so many other shines you can get durring the day, it felt like a waste of time waiting for him to come out. Not only does it mean that the player doesn't have to arbitrarily hold down a button all the time, it also has a positive impact on level design.

    I really hope Nintendo does not abandon the 3D World formula. What I love about it is that it combines fun elements from 2D Mario (linear design, time limit, power-ups, world hubs, enemies between you and the end) and 3D Mario (able to move in a 3D space in most levels, a little bit of exploration to find collectables) into one package. The fact that it is so simple is what makes it so good. While mainline Super Mario games are always trying to innovate, to do the next big thing never done in the franchise before, 3D World sticks to Mario's roots, in arguably a more fun way than 2D Mario.

    The goal from Nintendo was always to translate 2D Mario to 3D and every 3D game in the series since 64 has slowly been getting to that point by tinkering with the design. The Bowser stages in 64 evolved into the special stages in Sunshine which evolved into half the level design of Galaxy which became the majority of Galaxy 2. 3D World was a natural progression from Galaxy 2 which was already super linear. Odyssey is where they realized they had perfected the transition finally and could experiment once again with more open design. Bowsers Fury experiments even more with elements from all the games from 3D World to Sunshine to Odyssey. I think the next game will be an even bigger experiment that builds off of what Bowsers Fury did. Watching this evolution is interesting to me and makes me appreciate every 3D Mario game in their own ways.

    Bowser's Fury didn't get rid of the linear levels - they are still there. The game just did such a good job hiding their inclusion and how they were modified after the first traversal that you didn't notice. What makes Bowser's Fury so brilliant is that it successfully combines the awesome linear levels of Galaxy and 3D World with the open sandbox of Odyssey. You can think of the areas outside of the linear levels as the sandbox rather than a hub world, and missions like collecting all 5 red cat paws as exploratory missions that you'd find in Odyssey. For the first time ever all types of 3D Mario fans will probably enjoy this game because it has everything people want.

      If there's any game that shows that the Switch hardware is aging, it's Bowser's Fury. It's one of the best 3D Mario experiences in years... but it also pushes the Switch to its limits, and it's REALLY noticeable. You notice it the second you stop playing 1080p 3D World and start playing Bowser's Fury and it's in 720p.

    • @thetechconspiracy2
      @thetechconspiracy2 3 роки тому

      @@toonzach2870 I wonder if it's not so much an issue with the Switch, and more an issue with the 3D World engine not being optimized properly for a large open world. From my understanding, it is the same engine used for 3D Land, which obviously has the same restrictive level design as 3D World base. Being a 3DS game, Nintendo would have had to work to optimize the engine for a specific style, and they chose the (probably better for a 3DS game) restrictive design. Then the Switch comes along, and they decide to force that engine to run a much larger contiguous world than it was designed for, compared to something like the Odyssey engine (which I believe is based on Galaxy based on how it feels, but I could very well be wrong) that is designed for the much larger worlds. I wonder if modders could port Bowsers Fury into the Odyssey engine and get better performance (I doubt a port is realistic, though, especially for stuff like Giga Bowser).
      I haven't played Bowsers Fury myself, but this is the first review I've seen that mentions the frame drops, leading me to believe it may not be that big an issue (though I did see it get pretty slow in the video), and that this was the best Nintendo could do with the engine they chose to build on. It may not have been feasible to include the Odyssey engine, either due to space restrictions on the carts, time or budget restrictions if the two engines are basically incompatible in terms of data formats used, they may have very well had to rebuild essentially the entire mode from scratch. Even if the engines are somewhat compatible (wouldn't be surprising), the 3D World powerups/mechanics would still need to be ported over to the Odyssey engine (it could be done, even if the solution is a bit hacky, such as having Mario "capture" something depending on how much "health" he has, which is always set to 2 when hit while "captured", setting him to Super, and capping the health he can have at 2). If you are doing all that work, might as well add extra content and make it a regular $60 release, make it a cheaper eShop release (Nintendo is obviously well known for frequent low cost releases) or potentially even Odyssey DLC.

      @@thetechconspiracy2 This is a well-thought-out theory, but unfortunately it's incorrect, as SM3DW+BF actually _does_ use Odyssey's engine.     • @thetechconspiracy2
      @thetechconspiracy2 3 роки тому

      @@RoadrunnerWMC In that case, it could be the teams inexperience, and it could just be that the Switch hardware is starting to get too outdated. I don't think a Switch "Pro" would help, though, and history is on my side. The New 3DS "failed" in the sense that there were only a few games that required it, and most of those were ports (Xenoblade, Hyrule Warriors, Minecraft), and the games that were enhanced did little with the extra hardware (Pokemon Gen 7 aside, which run so much better on the N3DS hardware it makes me think they were built to be N3DS exclusive). Going back further, the N64 Expansion Pak was in a similar situation, with very little use for the updated hardware. There were no exclusive PS4 Pro/Xbox One X games, and from my understanding the games that are enhanced often get little more than a resolution bump. What we need is a new system entirely. Move away from the Switch branding to avoid confusion, but ideally have backwards compatibility with games and accessories like the Pro Controller. It would be nice to retain the quasi-portable quasi-home-console that the Switch is, or make it a full handheld with a docking kit sold separately (again, compatibility with the existing hardware would be nice). Of course, move away from the flawed Joy-Con design (even I can't deny that the sticks are incredibly prone to drift issues, although I will say that it isn't an issue exclusive to the Switch like people seem to make it out to be, both generations of Xbox and PlayStation hardware have drift issues, as does the Pro Controller since they all share the same part), maybe implementing Circle Pads like the 3DS, or make the sticks easily replaceable (my preferred solution, since I quite like the stick design aside from drift issues), with more durable connectors and a faceplate that easily unscrews from the back or unsnaps with a guitar pick (Bonus money opportunity, sell special edition faceplates for $20-$30 each, and actually do it this time unlike the New 3DS).

    Originally, I thought this game was perfect, but now that I am old and cynical I now know this game isn’t OMG BEST GAME EVER quality anymore. At the time, I haven’t played Sunshine. Now that I have, I now know Sunshine really nailed the “linear” missions by giving them all *story* and *several routes*, both of which are completely absent in 3D World’s levels, making for an experience that feels more hollow and artificial in comparison. Granted, the game is still loads of fun, but it just lacks the depth of older games sadly. The game is also a bit creatively dry. I would go further in depth with this, but I doubt many are actually reading this, so I shall just stop here.

    I actually grew up playing 2d Mario and somehow managed to skip the Wii era. Being a teenager and going out into the world and all that. So when i got my own place with my then gf. I got a Wii U and absolutely loved this game! The music the visuals, the way they kind of did 2d Mario but in 3d.
    I was shocked to see how much people didn’t really click with it. Then when galaxy got released on the switch, I was like oh so this is why lol. Galaxy is by far my fav 3d Mario now. Although I still do have a special place for 3d world too.
