Astro - you’ve gotta have a lens like this. Yes, you can shoot pano with 20 f/1.8, or the 24 f/1.4, but this is going to produce some truly unique images, especially time-lapse.

@@NetvoTV I would think the Tamron 17-50 is your best option. I haven't used it, but it is a newer lens and so should be better optimized for the a7rv sensor. I'm not a fan of Laowa because they lack electronic connection to the camera, and the 12-24 F4 is a pretty old lens now. I would think the new PZ16-35G would make a good pair.
This reminds me a lot of the Nikon 14mm f2.8D ED, Light weight, compact, albeit limited in use due to fixed range, so I switched to the flowerpot of 15-30 Tamron f2.8! Great video Kai!
04:00 Try taking a photo like that again with the "electronic first curtain" setting shutter turned off. It can cause bokeh balls to fade out towards the bottom as seen in that photo, and is best to not use with large aperture lenses as far as I understand. Cheers.
The way the bokeh balls seem to fade away on the bottom, is that because of the electronic front curtain thing? Or do they always look like that? Ive seen videos that demonstrate that the electronic front curtain affects bokeh, that is why I'm asking.
14mm is not wide on a full frame. I have read that Sonys small 46mm mount vignettes with a 12mm and the ibis on. There is no way a 11mm rectilinear lens will work on that 46mm mount.
@@nordic5490 14mm is very wide on FF, at least that's what 99% of phodogs thinks. Vignette on any Sony 12-24 mm is more than acceptable and who cares for 11mm, its a niche of a niche market. Btw fyi theres 10mm rectilinear lens for Sony mount.
Not fully related to the video, but I’m considering changing brands to Sony from Nikon, is Sony’s first series full frame cams decent enough to use nowadays? I can pick one up with a good budget for lenses, otherwise what would your suggestion be? Thanks for any replies (sorry for commenting this here, I assume there’s some good Sony experts here :D)
Hello I’m a Sony user. In my opinion, I wouldn’t invest in the 1st and 2nd gen Sony full frame cameras. While yes you could get by with them, the improvements made in the 3rd gen cameras are definitely worth it. The AF and bigger battery alone is reason enough to just go for the 3rd gen FF cameras. However, if you’re set on getting an earlier camera I think the A7RII would be the best one. Hope that helps.
@@rkfan1012 +1 for A7III. It is relatively affordable, versatile and one of the best performing camera in low light environment. Timing wise maybe worths to keep in mind that the announcement of A7IV is expected within the next months which might push the A7III`s price lower thus maybe it would makes sense to wait a little.

Happened to me more than once, accidentally formatting a card. But I never had any issues getting at least 80% of it back in no time with Recuva. Worth a shot next time! It's PC only but with windows laptops that are a few years old and still very capable pretty much being given away, there's no reason to not have one laying around.
Not sure if he is talking about the sony camera or the drone photos, but if he formated on the sony, it's just gone. Low level formatting is applied. It basically does what you ask for, format.
No. Maybe in the future, but you have the delete option which is almost the same actually. (You can "delete all of this day". Never tried to recover after delete though)
Great video as always! Just a thought, is the lack of chromatic adoration just improvements in the lenses or could there also be a bit of in camera correction ?
i just bought this lens sony 14mm. I noticed a sound when you press shutter button i hear mechanical "chik" of closing aperture sound in lense while focusing. Is it normal?
Kai, I believe "Engineering plastic" is a blend consisting mostly of polycarbonate. Like, the stuff they make hockey masks and safety glasses out of. I'm not at all worried about it. Also, there are ways to recover cards that have been formatted, look up Recuva. And finally, I love seeing all of the wear on your A7iii!
I think there are a million blends of plastic and rubber nowadays and plastic shouldn't still be associated with crappy and cheap. But somehow it still is, so they just give it a fancy name. You can now even get 1 dollar plastic storage trays that are practically unbreakable. It's quite possible that over a dozen types of plastic are called 'Engineering plastic' or something similar. Sony probably mostly sticks to one or a few kinds though, at least for the exterior so they all look and feel kinda similar and consistent.
I wanna invest in more glass for my body, my 24-105 is brilliant, but I'd love more. Alas, I've had to keep the studio closed for over a year due to covid. So that's wonderful. And also means no money for glass.
You are so right, you have to see on the camera/lens system, that is why I went from Canon DSLR to Sony mirrorless, exellent compact cameras and a huge amount of lenses both from Sony and other brands. I had an extreme ultra wide angle lens, but I got bored of it, now I have the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM which I use a lot, I do have a 20mm, but I only use 20mm 2 or 3 times in a year. The new Sony 14mm 1.8 GM are an exellent lens, just not for my camera bag, maybe in the future.
Can’t wait to you Kai and Lok feature in same videos again.
I agree with you on design. I borrowed a friend's 35 1.4 GM and it just felt do good even on the older ergonomics of the A7III

Great review thanks Kai. How much larger is this Sony 14mm than the 12mm and 15mm Voightlander Ultra Wides?
seems like Sonys narrow mount doesn't stop them making good designs.
Yeah, even though everyone kept saying it would be an issue

I'd also recommend the A7III as the entry level camera, as it's really the point where Sony nailed it in terms of battery life and AF.
If not, I’d look at the r2.

Sony Killing It ™
Still waiting to see if I’ll ever bump into you in Kingston 😆
How are Sony making such great lenses that are so small and light (this is coming from a Fuji user)?

I'll hopefully buy that lens in the next month or so.

compact eh? massive vignetting from the lens mount being too small should create compact lenses. not lightweight, just compact.
