Out of all the things Nick could have put in this he just so happened to choose not just the most colorful items but the most cutting edge experiments that weren't just some whacky person's attempt at being edgy or different they actually served a very real purpose and did it well(the Panasonic for example). It says a lot about how knowledgeable Nick is about the era and he has good taste

You seem like the kind of person I can talk to about building stuff.
(I also feel like others who like building might arrive)
      .
When I think of building with a purpose I love the idea of expanding upon surface area.
Ie expanding rooms or bigger on the indise homes.
      .
My goal is to build a trailer with a expanding home upon it.
      .
Eventually starting a business, renovating others trailers to expand for low prices.
      .
To me it makes sense that u make a pop up trailer for weight and aeroe reasons.
      Like drag.
      .
      I enjoy flowing~
Idk I wanted to add a secret doctor who box in the back so when it expands, u see the door but u get confused how real it seems and u open the door and walk in and
Eventually realize u might be in there but u get pushed
Past the curtains and just see a room on a trailer that sat no taller than your lungs

One was installed just out of Dunedin and I recall we were called out one morning to rescue the lady occupant who had stepped outside to hang the washing . I think the door closed behind her and wouldn't open again ! There was also another model called the "venturo" which was square with rounded corners. Awesome video 👍!

I remember being fascinated by one these as a young teen growing up in Colorado. On day trips Up in the mountains. Especially on the drive to Estes Park from Denver. We used to drive by one saucer seemingly dangerously close, less than 18ft. back from a limestone cliff face with some pine trees obsuring, the view of the back third of the saucer with a drop of 20 ft. Right by the Interstate Highway. You could see 2/3 of the saucer on the left hand side as you drove West .
In the Woody Allen movie 'Sleeper' a comedy Didn't one of these futuristic saucer shaped houses get used as a movie prop; both for outdoor and indoor scenes. I think it was this very Saucer in Colorado used in the movie. I think it was With Woody Allen and an actress don't remember the actresses name. It is possible it was Goldie Hawn .The whole conversation and comedy bit in the saucer in the movie was maybe 5 minutes long.

Having lived in the 70s, Nick's house is like a time capsule. I vividly remember the orange, yellow and red colours in the vibrant furnishings, the radio (although we had the record player version), and we even had a similar OTT chess set. I was a teenager in the 70s and I remember how we thought everything was possible (at least in the early 70s) and that there was an excitement about all the innovations we expected to come in the future. Using more modern resin and glass techniques, these could be built relatively cheaply and would literally last forever with very little maintenance. Could even create a 10m version with a little more space for more family members. Makes me smile just looking at it.

I can't believe he doesn't live here! Very generous of him to share it with the world. If I renovated one like this I would put a circular hollow core in the center, divide it in pie shaped wedges and have doors opening to each room from the vertical core providing storage for each "room". I would build the circular core only to accessible storage height rather than to the ceiling and on top of the core storage ceiling I would have some unbelievably cool lights that rotate so they can be seen from every "room". I would also make more of a statement with the kitchen and bath. They were both a little small and there is space to spare from the main area. I'm an interior designer.

Well talk about bringing back old memories. When we would drive to Thames there would be one just before the old bridge. So cool that this one has been restored.

My usual complain about tiny houses being too bland and colourless - definitely can't complain about that with this epic colourfest! Love, love, LOVE it!

I grew up in Hillcrest in San Diego. Back in the early 70's there was one of these behind a business strip on 5th Ave between Robinson and University Ave. I used to ride my bike down 4th Ave and up 5th Ave. before and after school. I remember one day riding up the street and seeing a driveway between 2 businesses that dropped down and around the back. Being bored and curious I went down the driveway and this thing was just sitting there. it was kind of beat up and someone lived in it but I never saw who. always thought it was really cool and would and would ride past from time to time.

What a great episode. Loved the nod to the Skysphere, which is still one of my favorite homes from back in the early days of LBIATH. I have been fortunate enough to have been in two of the Futuro's. One was in Nelson in the 1970s, and the other was on display at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens around 2004. They were both in original condition, more to show off their practicality than their style. But this episode shows the potential that these fibreglass wonders had. No room for dull neutral colours and minimalism. The futuro screams Brady Bunch holidays on acid.

Fun fact, there used to be a whole bunch of these near the Green Bay, New Taipei City, Taiwan.
They were already in an abandoned state when I was younger (around late 90s to early 2000s), and this video made me wonder if they’re still there or if they were demolished in the past few years.(haven’t been there in a long time.)
I always liked how they looked and it’s fascinating to see one in such a good condition.

I grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Not far from where I lived was one of these Futuro homes. I always wanted to see what it was like inside. Thanks for showing this incredible place. The funny thing is, the one where I grew up, also had a dog house designed exactly the same! But I like the yard in this video much better.

What would give more storage would be underfloor, there's lots of space there and not much I imagine is being used. He could put in hatches in the floor to access storage. Just a thought, love what he's done with it, I hope you can go back to see him once he's done his second one!

The wood deck looks like a tractor beam when you look at it from above. The lights help sell that idea too. You can tell a lot of design ideas went into this space.

I love this home, so cool. I was a teenager in the 70s so I remember going into some people's homes and seeing similar colors and decor often in the rec room. I had one of those flip numbers type alarm clocks, mine might have been a radio too. My sister had orange shag carpeting in her bedroom, you had to rake it with a carpet rake, lol.
One thing I do wonder about the home is alternate entrance and exit methods. You need more than one way in and out. Also will the door hatch open if there's a power failure or dead battery? Are any of the windows operational?
I really hope you will go visit the next house when it's completed.

    • @lizh1988

I had a red flip number alarm clock, a lemon yellow lamp with matching shade. I designed my own room--on paper only--with primary colors. My sis & I had a printed folding cardboard pink and orange cardboard table. The modern stuff was mixed with fake colonial furniture pieces my grandmother bought, ordinary furniture store stuff.
This was a fun walk down memory lane, this episode.

I love this design! It's remarkably TARDIS like. I thought it would be a bit dark and cramped inside, but it was far from it. With a little tweaking (like added storage) this could be easily a full time home.
