- Frigate vs Destroyer | What is the Difference Between Frigate and Destroyer - Warships are a key part of a navy’s surface fleet and come in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on their capabilities and functions. Frigates and destroyers are two of the most common warships in a navy’s fleet. Both are designed for quick manoeuvrability and can be used to escort and protect larger vessels from air, surface and underwater threats. The similarities between frigates and destroyers have led to some European navies using the terms interchangeably.
On the other hand, frigates are more common, with almost every navy in the world in possession of a frigate as part of its navy fleet, while only 13 nations possess destroyers, according to the Global Fire Power Index 2019. Frigate vs #destroyer - what are some of the key differences?
Of the 55 nations that own frigate ships, China leads the world with 52 #frigates across three different classes, followed - perhaps surprisingly - by Taiwan, which has 24, and the US with 22 vessels.

This vid kinda had credibility... and then came the KILO-KNOT...
exactly what i was thinking. How do they not even know the speed unit of KNOTS? its abbreviation may be kn, but that k does NOT stand for "kilo"
Or he means 1000 knots
.....still irrelevant speed.
Because it's hard to find people who are blessed with knowledge and presentable voice. So we have different people wrote the script and another presented it.
Speaking of credibility:

I read that a while back, watched this video, and thought for a hot minute that I was having Déjà vu. I find it weird that this video is an exact word for word reading of that article from almost a full year before this video was posted.
@@fuechse7848 A lot of videos are based on Wikipedia. Maybe that link is the material they used for the video.
European classify their destroyer as frigate. Meanwhile, Iran classify a patrol boat as Destroyer.
in fact, spanish frigates f-100 have arleigh burke hulls, made with license.both are Aegis platforms, same kind of radars,sonars,weapons...
you can buy them from USA or from Spain, one will sell you a destroyer, the other will sell you a frigate.
also,on their origin, they were meant to kill torpedo boats, hence "torpedo boat destroyers"maybe not so far from a patrol boat in size and weapons.
so....what a mess
Underrated comment
Iran would put a guy on bayliner with an Ak and a suicide vest, and call it a battleship.
Im Straight no that wouldn’t help we learned our lesson with USS Cole next one is getting hit with a 5 inch gun (so he’s dead 💀)
Since Iran had that friendly fire incident that sank one of their boats I guess it technically is a "destroyer" now.
32 kilo knots would put the Indian frigate in a solar orbit..
lol
That's what i thought as well. LOL

Watched the entire video. Did not understand the difference between Frigate and destroyer.
Simple:Frigate is smaller than destroyer?
Its not about ship spec anymore right now but more political. Destroyers sound so offensive and heavy frigate sound more calm
It really comes down to what role the ship is built for, as in the video it said frigates are generally relegated to ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) While destroyers are more focused on defense of carrier strike groups for the few navies that have destroyers and carriers
Frigates are escorts class ships while destroying a air defense class shis
@@keeganfox1864 Build for all roles? ;-)
“War ships are a key part of navy surface fleets”. Well yeah they are the navy surface fleet haha
This is kinda underrated.
There are other ships though; assault ships; mine hunters; and aircraft carriers for example
@@SamirKhan-yy5gy those are still considered warships. Exceptions would be hospital shops, and merchant marines.

I can’t even imagine the bow wave produced buy going 30,000 knots.
So, a couple notes:
A "knot" is not a "kilo-not," it's just a knot. It's one nautical mile per hour.
"Mk" is an abbreviation for "mark," it's not an acronym. "Mk 57" is "mark 57."
Next time get someone with at least a passing familiarity with sailing and military terminology to voice your video.
I don't think he even understands what the differance between a Friggate or a Destroyer so not much chance he knows more than what he looked up on Google! Just don't ask him what a Crusier is.......; ;-)
And...one knot per hour? 1.2 land mph or so? I'm used to Piper Cadet. Learning.
@@waltdixknee2645 yeah, a knot can be a term of distance or speed depending on context
Ther term Destroyer was adopted after the invention of the torpedo and was originally a torpedo equipped vessel capable of sinking a larger capital ship, typically Battleships (originally Battle Ship Of The Line) which could previously only be killed by a similarly powerful gun equipped vessel, the original term was Torpedo Boat Destroyer. When submarines came along they incorporated an ASW role as well. Frigate is a renaming of Destroyer Escort, a similar but smaller vessel primarily designed for fleet defense. So the major difference was offensive vs defensive primary role. Modern navies have fudged the difference with a mix of technologies and general multi-role capability making it all a bit academic hence differentiation by size and significant overlap between different nations.
TL;DR: A destroyer is a bit bigger than a frigate and therefore can generate more energy and carry more powerful radar and more munitions. Destroyers typically protect carrier groups while frigates protect larger vessels in shipping lanes.
Thank you. That dude doesn't know how to do this shit.
That used to be the case. The new German F 180 class frigates will weigh over 9000 tons and will be equipped as multi-purpose combat ships. That means that according to the old classification this frigates would actually already be light cruisers and bigger then destroyers. You can no longer rely on the classification of a warship today. The classification of all warships no longer corresponds to reality. I think it's time to come up with new terms.
@@folkestender2025 Thank you Folke for that interesting information! (I was only summarising what the video itself said)
I am immune it Ur smartness
@Nick Fehring Basically, the terms cruiser and frigate are relics from the sailing ship era. The name destroyer comes from the 1st World War. In the beginning they were called torpedo boat destroyers. They were invented to fight the fast torpedo boats that hid behind your own heavy battleships and cruisers to quickly break your own line and attack enemy battleship lines. The newly invented destroyers should prevent that, because the heavy armament of the battleships and cruisers were not suitable to fight fast moving small targets.
Ah yes, 32 kilo-knots, or 59,264 kilometres per hour. Pretty Quick ship.
Ship is literally in space

59,264 kilometres per hour = 48.37759 Mach. To go to the Moon, Apollo 11 flew at 40233.51329 kilometers per hour

Shivaik class are next gen stealth frigate having a displacement equivalent to a destroyer . However they are considered as Frigate due to armament qty.
Yet the Shivaik class frigate isn't close to being as capable or stealthy as the the US Zimwalt class. It's displacement is still not that of a destroyer. The Shivaik class would be considered a VERY small destroyer if was but that is why it's a frigate and not a destroyer.
A modern frigate will normally weigh anywhere from 3,500 to 6,000 tons. Destroyers normall weigh anywere from 7,000 to 11,000 tons. I believe the Sliviak class friaget weighs around 6,000 tons, which is big for a frigate but still not that close to being considered a destroyer
@@mississippirebel1409 Basically a light Destroyer or heavy frigate. It's not that stealthy as zumwalt ,it's obvious but stealth comparable with ships of it's class including some Western ones.

In the 1960's - and 1970's the U.S.Navy built several classes of guided missile frigates which were later reclassified as guided missile cruisers. They were about 550 feet long. I wonder if the Zumwalts will someday be reclassified as cruisers.

Just imagine someone making a video about fast cars and saying 'milos per hundred' instead of miles per hour. It's not some minor error. It's breaking the video, because it becomes painfully obvious that the narrator has NO CLUE what he's talking about. If there was any genuine commentary (which fortunately isn't the case, but if you don't know that it's a ripoff from an article somebody spent working hours creating, you wouldn't know) it would be by someone for whom the description amateur (in the field this is about) would be a grave overstatement.

I tried researching this subject as well and found that there were some large Frigates and small Destroyers that utterly smear the line of distinction between the two. Then they have Corvettes which are not considered Frigates despite their size, it's very confusing.
The Fletcher class US destroyers of WW11 were more like light cruisers. Early Corvettes little more than trawlers with a couple of small guns and a few depth charges; almost useless. With Radar, Sonar, "Huff/Duff"and "Hedgehog" care of the Brits, they were quite nasty.

what the eff is a killa knot ? sounds like something a really good boy scout would be proud of
The navy uses cruisers for carrier group air defense ships, destroyers are a secondary/backup for this role.
They used to do that. Destroyers are a primary fleet defense ship now, and have been for at least a generation. The US Navy only operates enough cruisers for each of it's carrier groups to have 1 or 2, while having over 60 destroyers in service. There are also no plans to begin developing a replacement for the current cruiser in USN service.
As a badger from Russia once said ‘frigates just exist to DIE’
The blending of missions calls for, IMO, a revamping of warship terminology. 'Destroyers' now have the size and capability of cruisers, as well as fulfilling historical cruiser roles and should be so designated, while frigates are now filling the destroyer roles, and can be redesignated destroyers OR, drop the destroyer term altogether--as some navies have already done.
"Frigate" is in the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) and was used for small, fast ships principally for reconnaissance, communication and commerce protection; not ships of the line. "Destroyers" were more powerfully armed being "Torpedo Boat Destroyers" in the late 19th century to defend battleships. Surprise surprise, the US was trying to build ships bigger than the Royal Navy, but were trumped (sic) by the Imperial Japanese Navy in almost every department apart from numbers. What a waste of money and resources. And lives.
The meaning of the terms varies between navies.
@@johnconlon9652 American Frigates in the Cold War were primarily tasked with anti-submarine warfare. Also, you use "sic" when quoting what someone else says, when there's some peculiarity or error it. Your use of the term makes no sense.
@@Nerval-kg9sm Trump and trumped - geddit? Perhaps you don't know the usage.
I go by video games. From smallest/lightest to biggest/baddest -> corvette -> frigate -> destroyer -> cruiser -> battleship -> batlecruiser -> dreadnought -> carrier -> supercarrier
a battleship is bigger than a battlecruiser and a dreadnought
Do you tie you shoes in knots or nots? The 'k' is silent and not an SI prefix. A knot (when it comes to nautical speed) is one nautical mile per hour, about 15% faster than 1 mph.
Whats the ship 25 seconds in? Looks like a type 23 frigate but its not flying the union jack. Perhaps its a type 23 that has been sold...

Yes

So what is the difference between them?
Lol the “Kilo-knot”
And what about cruisers?? What is the difference from these two
Kilo knot?! 😂 Oh dear
Around 3:30 you state the difference relates to electrical systems and space for missile launch tubes. The terms frigate and destroyer predate both such things. Ship classifications changed many times over the years as different people and panels of experts decided to change ship rates and definitions and such.
I'd like to see what is effect of those guns mounted in frigates and destroyers! How do they kill a ship?
They kill jets and helicopter
Nice video footage but bad explaining. The Knot thing is an amature mistake, should not hapen in a video like this.
And in the end i learned not whats the diffrence between thos ships
Well, he did convert it into KM/H. 😅
Basically both have similar fire power. But frigates tend to be defensive approach. While destroyers is offensive.
As i heard from local Navy Official, he said
"you dont go to someone house with gun in hand(destroyer).
But nobody offended if you keep the gun in holster, & still respect you as a guest(frigates)"
Explain Carriers and their groups. They pretty much come to your figurative porch, namely your coast with at least two guns: its Air Wing and destroyers way off with the houses coordinates programmed into their missiles, hatches open and ready to go at the word. That's not including the SSNs with cruise missiles in vertical launch tubes ready to go. Leaving the big girls out of it like Cruisers, SSGNs and SSBNs
@@chrismc410 that is why Fleet Carrier Group tend to be offensive in some country. Thanks for info.
No mention of the French Fremm class frigates. Those are more than capable of area air defence.
Much like Russia’s guided tank munitions, I’ve heard rumors that the U.S. is designing a new class of Battleship that is intended to provide fire support for aircraft carriers & such…
It's called arsenal ship
No, they’re calling it something else that is more Patriotic, marsel dagistani. Aside from one key feature, its still a battleship because it forces more on the artillery method of firing its ordinance…
What is your opinion on Indian Navy !
I'm sorry, I can't decide, can I get one of each?....
I always thought that U.S classification difference was based on frigates have 1 screw and destroyers having 2 screws
The 1982 Real Naval Battle of Falklands 🇫🇰 Islands demonstrate clearly that Low Flying Argentina Atrack Aircraft armed with Bombs and feared Exocet Anti ship Missile that Sank 2 British Modern Type 42 Destroyers, HMS Coventry and Hms Sheffield which was sunk byv1 Exocet Anti ship Missile fired by 1 Argentine Etandard Fighter.

US classifies their largest surface ship as a Destroyer. US Zumwalts are 50% larger than it's Cruisers. The US Arleigh Burke Destroyers are almost the same size as the Ticonderoga Cruisers.
anyone know what song playing from 00:03?
In the sail ages fregat are second class warship behimd the main battle line. They smaller but more agile and fast. Destroyer were born in the steam and iron clad era developed from earlier torpedo boat, the need for fast, long range small warship enable to destroy enemy's battleship and escort duty.
Modern fregat are born in WW2 in need for defense the cargo convoys from U boats and E boats.
I'm not sure about other nations but the RAN's future hunter frigate seems to be more capable of multiple types of missions whereas the Hobart destroyer is more purpose built for it's task.
That's actually very common these days, especially among European navies who have been through a lot of ever increasing budget costs sinds the end of the cold war, and therefor the few ships they did have had to be able to fulfill a lot of different roles simultaneously. That has resulted in multi-capable frigates bristling with the latest radars and other electronic equipment, and many types of different offensives weapons, but it also increased the unit cost of those frigates exponentially, with many of such ships costing 2-2,5x as much as most frigates, around half a billion per ship.
The picture used for the video thumbnail is a US independence class LCS. The American LCS class ship is neither a destroyer nor a frigate. If you must classify it, the nearest thing to most navies is a corvette. The last true frigate the US had was the Oliver Hazard Perry class and it was almost twice as big. The upcoming FFGX class is over twice as big and of course destroyers are even larger.
Me: I am scared of no man but that thing (friget) It scares me
Lynx is now out of service, replaced by the Wildcat.
This went down the rabbit hole in a hurry. The guy doesn’t know a nautical mile from a statute mile. The whole premise of the video is based on ethereal nomenclature. Every country in the world has a different set of military objectives and a unique vision of national pride. In accordance with those factors they define their ship’s classifications so that they will appear to have the most robust fleet possible without being ludicrous. Almost any excuse can be used to “upgrade” a ship from one class to another. Consider the Cold War era when overnight while at sea my ship, USS Sterret DLG 31 instantly became CG31and its entire class shifted from frigates to cruisers at the same instant. I felt no shift in the force. We didn’t even have to paint anything. The only department that felt a change was the ships office which probably had to order more white out to paint over those typos as they habitually typed DLG instead of the newly correct CG.
It was a way to make our navy seem more powerful without spending any money. We did get the Harpoon anti ship missile system shortly after this, but that was used as retroactive justification for the class upgrade.
Are there any crusers left in service
Yes, if you go to the wiki page for cruiser, there is a tab of cruisers in service or under construction.
3:53. What is a kilaknot. ( I’m sure I butchered the spelling). Obviously I know what a knot is but never herd that term before talking about a ship or anything else’s speed. Or herd the term ever for that matter.
a knot in naval terms is one nautical mile an hour. it is different than one mile an hour on land. 1 knot =1.15 miles an hour. it's based on the circumference of the earth. it's one minute of latitude
Phillip Suttles yeah I know that.. I know what a knot is like I said. I’m talking about a kilaknot

You DO realise that 30 "kilo-knots" is more than 150% escape velocity, don't you?? Try calculating how a ship will stay in the water at 30,000 knots while the water and even the ship's hull vaporize due to friction.
Other than one of the stupidest mistakes I have heard....it was a good video.
Please pull it, fix it, and re-issue it so I can pay more attention to the last part....I couldn't concentrate after that.
Well explained! I still don't understand the difference.
I thought a frigate carries some sort of AirPower but a destroyer only carries missiles. That’s for the USCG not having missiles but lots of fire power with just heavy rounds and helicopters with drop boats or zodiacs. It’s literally in the name destroyer. But yes to other comments still didn’t give the answer on the main difference. I like how people forget about USCG those guys are scary AF they have a wing in the pentagon just remember that.
The difference is that a destroyer is a multi-role warship that can operate independently ; a frigate screens high value units like a carrier and its role is primarily ASW.
Patrick Payne shouldn’t we just call it straight and say the frigate is more expendable than the destroyer, then?
Oh I like them both
What is a kill a not?
USS Samuel B. Roberts, "The destroyer escort that fought like a battleship"
So what kills sub marines, Fri or desto?
Both if armed with torpedoes and/or certain missiles. Also certain helicopters take on anti sub roles so basically any ship that can carry/deploy those choppers. Other subs would be most likely though I'd guess.
A Frigate & Destroyer are basically escorts to Aircraft Carriers
Like all military channels, they just stop talking at a random point in the video and just show slips of stuff until the 10 minute mark lol
Great content mate
I'd rather stick to Civilization V's classification.
A frigate is a ship mostly used during 18th and 19th century, a predominant ship in the fleet of the powerful nations of the time.
A destroyer is a modern ship, used to protect carriers and defend against submarines.
A frigate was smaller than a ship of the line, and so is the destroyer smaller than a Battleship.
PS: this has not been taken from the Civilopedia, but you can google it for a possibly better explanation.
Yo the navy only has one frigate. Uss constitution. And it’s a museum. Building new ones now tho
Allow me to disagree,
Destroyer are mainly produced by US and are made for open ocean/sea battles,
their main difference with frigates are
1, rounds of fire, more amunition storage,
2, autonomy
frigates on the other hand, are designed for archipelagos, and shore defence,
consider that the new Bellhara frigate, Greek modify has 48 missile launchers, fire same time, length 136 meter
a number that many destroyers would envy, but firng rounds are limited,
for that is designed to cooperate with other 9 smaller ships, with 12 to 14 launcer each.
that makes loses to cost less.
consider a battle among a Zumwalt, and 3 small missile lancher ships, control by a frigate, km away.
that is the difference, in a full scale war.
All these Warships are still Vulnerable to Enemy Anti ship Missile , Aircraft Attack and Submarine Attacks.
This video seems to be a straight rip off of an article on Naval-Technology.com titled "Frigate vs Destroyer: What is the Difference between the Two Warships?", written by Talal Husseini. You can also tell that they didn't really put any effort into the actual content because they mistake the shorthand for Knots (kn) that's used in the article as "kilo-nots", a term that doesn't actually exist.
A destroyer can be a frigate, but a frigate can also inherit other roles.
I have looked at lots of videos comparing Frigates and Destroyers...And still can't understand the difference....The simple question us, if a Frigate is cheaper and dies the same thing as a Destroyer, then why make Destroyers?
Baffled year at sea, and never once measured my speed in kila knots
You should have rowed harder, much harder!
Destroyers destroy. So they are bigger, right? For bigger targets, right? So the smaller boats protects them, right?
Kilo nots? LOL.
A *knot* is a measure of speed that equates to 1 nautical mile per hour. It was measured by counting the number of knots in a line that pass over a certain period when a small sea anchor attached to that line was dropped overboard.
Why the background music sounded like Avengers background music 🤔🧐
Its funny that a 70 year old battle ship has a higher top speed than a lot of modern destroyers and weighs like 45000 tons more
This is an interesting topic with an interesting answer not presented in this video.
