    So essentially:
    Cruisers took the role of Battleships
    Destroyers took the role of Cruisers
    Frigates took the role of Destroyers
    Corvettes took the role of PT Boats
    Carriers are still carriers
    Amphibious Assault ships are still Amphibious Assault ships but with air power
    Submarines are still submarines
    And the Battleships got fired

Although, the presentation was supposed to be about how he was hand building a canoe in his recent retirement and the wood working skills he used, it turned to his line of work prior. he had a part in the development of littoral combat ships and he told us how when they launched the first one and it took off it's wake washed all the civilian boats out of the way. I think it comes down to the progression of weaponry. For a while, canons were the main offensive tool for ship combat. Bigger guns could shoot farther and do more damage, so bigger ships were better because they could hold more and bigger guns. Then torpedos and aircraft carriers were invented. Aircraft had significantly longer range than a battleship's main guns, so battleships became inferior to carriers. Fundementally it's about range. Rock -> club -> spear -> bow -> gun -> canon -> missile.

    • @hoarder1919
      @hoarder1919 Рік тому +3

      it might be largely obsolete, but not completely obsolete. You need to pass a certain size to be able to conduct deep sea operations. So something like a torpedo boat or small corvette would still never be considered a destroyer even if powerfully armed - simply because a torpedo boat or small corvette would have a hard time against the ocean.

      If railguns become feasible, battleships will come back very quickly. The defenses on most warships are there to prevent them from getting hit, and it is /really/ hard to stop a shell from landing. Also, tungsten darts are likely /much/ cheaper than cruise missiles.

    • @highground7923
      @highground7923 3 роки тому +288

      Also, smart ammo (basically tracking bullets) are starting to be used on guns, they act the same as missiles but at a somewhat shorter range, cheaper, and can’t be countered currently. These both combined could result in battleship or monitor type vessels reoccurring

    • @kennethferland5579
      @kennethferland5579 3 роки тому +249

      If rail guns were to become practical it wouldn't bring back the Battleship unless you also end up with massive armor protection on the ship as well and this is unlikely due to the importance of speed. Historically ships with high caliber guns but without armor were called Battle Cruisers (though the term was lose) In reality your likely to just see such a single such weapon integrated onto modern cruisers replacing the existing deck gun and it would be arguable if this would even rise to the level of a new class, particularly if it becomes part of the existing weapon mix on the cruiser rather then something the whole ship is built around.

    One correction I have to make: Aircraft carriers traditionally used to have diesel engines. This, however, does not mean they would run on diesel fuel. In fact, the diesel engine is named after the Diesel cycle, as invented by Rudolf Diesel, and the fuel after the engine. Diesel engines can run on a variety of different fuels. Most marine diesel engines use heavy fuel oil, which is way cheaper than diesel.

    • @Fabben1
      @Fabben1 2 роки тому +57

      Most civilian ships run on HFO, since it it cheaper, and the technology have been around since the late 1960s for the diesel cycle engines. Military tends to have different priorities, like usability, stability and inter-usage between ship types. The HFO (or FFO-Furnace Fuel Oil) was used during the switch over period from coal to oil, and used for steam boilers. Ships equipped with diesel engines and gasturbines were (and are) using a diesel fuel oil, in shipping also known as a MGO (Marine Gas-oil). The standard for this is Nato Fuel F76. So he is correct by saying that the ships are using diesel fuel.

I can guarantee you half the budget of the Zumwalt destroyer’s construction. Could upgrade 2 battleships to be just as capable for modern technology. That and older destroyers could be updated as well saving so much more money. Yes I get the Zumwalt has stealth features. But has it been tested in combat? Maneuverability for them is slow. Too costly for their size. Destroyer only cost little but it could destroy a battleship twice the cost as that destroyer. They could be use for beach assault or something but those roles were replaced by warships with better capability (aircraft carrier, missile destroyers, amphibious Assault ship, missile submarines, etc) there really isn't any technology that could let you build a powerful battleships this days. If you're telling them to replace the main guns with missile, It would be an easy target due to its massive size. They can be torpedoed away by some submarines which would just waste all of the missiles in that battleship. Mostly these days, nations prefer a small yet powerful offensive force like destroyer, rather than a big battleship with great armor with powerful guns. Battleships are obsolete this days. The example is battleship Yamato which just got sunk by a bunch of torpedo bombers. If you want to build a powerful weapon it must be cost effective one.

    The term 'cruiser' comes from the Dutch term 'kruiser' meaning 'crosser'. It was invented to bring the firepower of a battleship, but with much higher speeds to 'cross' enemy ships at sea, meaning to intercept them.
    About the frigates, there can be air defense frigates too. Most frigates have decent anti air capabilities.
    The littoral combat ships are discontinued.
    There are more categories. Logistic ships like tankers and tugs for example.

      @Bob Shingles no, they are named that way because they are cruising long distances. They go relatively slow (compared to short range missiles) but have an enormous range. As in: more then 500km. They are (mostly) GPS guided, as it is impossible to have a target on radar, support the weapon with uplink, or have the risk of the weapon going for the wrong target (as you are blind on that range). They don't have to be big, a tomohawk can be shot from a standard VLS system (fitted on frigates and destroyers). They are somewhat the same size as a SM2 which is a short/medium range force defense missile.

    Please let me know if there is already a video of the Halifax-class on Not What You Think

    Imagine a battleship created with today's technology. They could have just one gun turret, but the accuracy would be insane. Could easily swat away smaller threats with modern missiles and point defense systems while just looking at something miles away and wiping it off the map.
    Battleships are so underappreciated man, hurts my soul

      One Railgun 3 gun turret and the rest of it's armaments are anti ship, anti air and torpedoes and maybe add drones of both air and sea variety.

    Torpedo boat 'destoryers' learning of the origin for the name makes me think of stellaris. A common tactic in that game is to build pretty much entire armadas of torpedo and missile corvettes, one of the only ways to defend against it is to have a screen of a few dozen destoyers covered head to toe with anti-torpedo and missile weapons. They wont win any fights but they'll make sure the corvettes cant wipe half your fleet in the opening volley.

      @@thegamesforreal1673 I haven't heard of any nerfs to it, that's one of the big reasons NSC2 is so popular because it really diversifies what's in your fleet and makes capital ships worth more than they currently are.

    • @hoarder1919
      @hoarder1919 Рік тому +2

      @@spikem5950 theyve changed the combat system, they got rid of torpedo corvettes and invented a whole new ship type for that role, frigate. Frigates are now armed with missiles (and neutron launchers go into the guided weapons slot too) and missiles have bonus damages against bigger ships (the bigger the ship, the bigger the damage).
      but all in all, frigates still suck, dont live long enough to make a dent. Missile cruisers, however, have a new life now, effective all-purpose vessels.

    1. aircraft carriers
    2.submarines
    3.Destroyers
    4.Cruisers (basically much smaller and less armoured battleship)
    Other than these rest of em are just either cruisers or destroyers or a mixture in disguise with different names

    For those interested, allot of nations classify their ships as different classes based on different metrics (Shock, I know).
    What this means is the U.S Zumwalt class Destroyer is named a Destroyer for its intended purpose, while many other Navies in the world would refer to it as a Battleship since it displaces more water than many past Battleships.
    Europe now uses allot of what they call Frigates, but the U.S would call Destroyers. They displace Frigate amounts of Water for European classification, but in a direct example, the French Stealth Frigates carry as many missiles (or more for the upcoming new frigate) as the largest U.S Destroyers.
    This is why the Frigate section of the video may sound a bit confusing or conflicting.
