Ser Barristan didn’t betray the mad king. During Roberts rebellion, Barristan fought on Rhaegar’s side in the battle of the trident. After the battle was over and Robert had killed Rhaegar. Roberts counselors debated if they should execute Barristan or let him live. Robert decided that he should live because he had some kind of respect towards him and he even sent his own maester to tend to Ser Barristan wounds. After the war was over, Robert would pardon Barristan and allowed him to rejoin in his kingsguard.This would eventually lead to main story on why he is with Robert.
Some of it was forced. But Robert actually had a pretty good head on his shoulders about keeping the former allies of the mad king on his side rather than punish them for fighting against him.
It makes me wonder if he ever even bothered to pardon them officially to seem merciful. Or avoided that specifically to let them know that he doesn't even see them as people that broke any rules because technically they didn't.
I miss that fat king's laugh.
"Jugglers and singers require applause. You are a Lannister." Charles Dance delivers that line with such contempt lol it always makes me laugh. He's too good lol.
You know Sam is one of the very few genuinely good guys in the whole story because Ghost protects him even if Jon's not around.

I also think he umderstood when Jon said no one is to touch Sam. He understood Jon wanted him to be protected.
Cerci’s love for her children is her only redeeming quality. Strangely, most of the messed up shit she does, is motivated by her children (or protecting them). She’s just such a well-written character too and Lena Heady does a magnificent job of bringing her to life. She’s perfection.
Also, Tyrion wasn’t out of line asking for his birthright, especially in light of his helping to save Kings Landing. That scene with Tywin shows his hatred for Tyrion and explains a lot of why Tyrion is the way he is and his motives. It’s harsh.
Also, also, Davos is boss. One of the best characters IMO.
She is such a fascinating character. I just made a comment about this, but I think there are tons of layers to her character nobody sees. Her love of her children is a redeeming quality, but also a hypocrisy in many ways. She makes you feel like she loves nothing more than her children, but there is one thing she loves more than them - what Cersei wants.

Tywin always gave the vibe of the King of Hell to me, ruling over petty, backstabbing devils with brutal order, powerful charisma, and intellect
So.....thinking from a citizen of The 7 kingdoms perspective. I agree with a LOT of unpopular opinions from characters in the show about who would or would not be a decent ruler. It made me realize super fast that without all the drama between houses, if left to rule at will, only two or three people would be outright HORRIFIC rulers and the rest would be very competent.
He did play a devil in "The Golden Child", interestingly enough.

That wasn't Winterfell that Robb found all the dead bodies. It was Harrenhall.
It's ok to love Cersei as a character but hate her character. People give her too much credit for loving her children...as a parent you're supposed to do that. Also, there is one thing Cersei always seems to love more than her children - her will. As long as what's best for them is the same as what she wants. She'll do anything for her kids, except give up what she ultimately wants out of any situation.
The actor that plays Tywin is Charles Dance. They couldn’t have cast a better person for that role. I LOVED Tywin!
In the books Rob didn’t punish his mother the way he does in the show. He’s gone when she releases Jaime but when he comes back, they pretty much blow it off as her being a mother and they send ppl to capture him again.
Love your reactions! It’s nice to see when reactors take the time to do the history and lore for the show so they understand it more and the audience doesn’t have to explain so much.
Note that Tywin hates Tyrion in a similar way Catelyn hates Jon Snow except with Tyrion being more politically active and therefore having more negative opinions that Tywin is eager to believe because he loved Joanna in a way that when she died he had to convert his sadness to anger towards Tyrion to cope with it. Also, Cersei can inherit Casterly Rock but if she's married then it would probably go to Tywins brother and I'm sure Tywin would prefer this though the best-case scenario in his mind is that Jaime leaves the Kings guard. Overall the situation is pretty sad since Tyrion is more like Tywin than any of his children and is exactly what he's looking for in an heir (besides not falling in love with whores) but hates him because of his wife's death.
I think people who only focus on him hating/resenting Tyrion only because of Joanna really do a disservice to how handicaps and different is seen in this world. How concerned with appearances and legacy Tywin is. Well, that whole world is. The whole family and Tywin spend a lot of time focused on saying the opinions of others don't matter,only us. To the point, his first to kids only feel safe being with each other.
It's hard enough being different now. Back in a time when was often considered a judgement, curse or outward sign of the parent's character or karma to have a child who was different. Me thinks, Tywin doth protest too much about not caring what others think.
To me it seems really clear that the death of Joanna is only one part of it.
I would add that Catlyn hating Jon is also a reflection of finding fault both with herself and Ned's infedielity.
In this episode, he reveals himself right away. In the books, however, Dany doesn't know he is Barristan for quite a while. He disguises himself under the name Arstan Whitebeard. His hair and beard are huge in a way that makes him unrecognizable. All of that to see if Daenerys is really worth fighting for, considering her father (the Mad King, or Aerys Targaryen) was who he was. When he reveals himself after some time with her, she gets pissed, but they work it out lol. Don't know if you intend to read the books, but you do like history and lore, so I thought it'd be cool to add this here :)
Arstan is also his fathers name, he considered returning to Harvest Hall after his dismissal but he feared the Lannisters would try to have him killed and didn't want to bring the Throne's wrath down on his father/cousins.
Trivia backstage fact for you. That scene when Cersei walks out of the room and snobs Bronn, she wasn't acting. That "i wont even look at your face cause ur shit to me" vibe she gave, was quite real.
Lena Headey and Jerome Flynn dated for more than 10 years, their relationship was quite toxic and did not end well, traumatic on their own words. They absolutely HATE each other. So on set, the writers agreed to never put them together in the same scene, and when they "interact" is always one leaving the room for the other to come in.

In the books, Rob isn’t angry with his mom and none of that mess went down like that. Rob is at the Crag and Cat’s bro locks her up to a portion of river run. She spends that time waiting on Rob with her dying father.
Loving your reactions so far Major! To answer a few of your questions- Tyrion is the rightful heir of Casterly Rock being that he is the next male in line if Tywin were to pass away. Jamie cannot have any titles because he is in the Kingsguard. Tywin is so hateful towards Tyrion so he doesn't want to let him have it.
If you remember in season 2, Jorah left for an episode to find Dany a ship. So she had one before she figured out Xaro had nothing to offer her. She and the Dothraki did keep the valuables they found in Xaro's possession though.
The pretty woman translating for Dany & Jorah is named Missandei (pronounced miss-an-day).

In the book, during one of the scenes with the giants they're singing a song called "The Last of the Giants" when it ends Ygritte is crying but Jon doesn't understand why because there's still so many and she tells him her usual "You know nothing, Jon Snow"
But the point to this is that the song is on UA-cam and it's called The Last of the Giants and the version I like is by Karliene.
The intro represents a big battle that happened when the white walkers attacked the Night's Watch camp in the books, but they couldn't put on screen, probably for $ reasons.
And Tywin, no matter how savage he is, he's almost impossible not to like.

Yes Selmy broke him out, also Selmy clear the isle of Old Wyk by himself during the Greyjoy Rebellion, while Ser Jorah and Thoros of Myr lead the Charge on Pyke.
Selmy was On the Trident when Rheagar fell to Robert. They could not kill him so Robert Pardoned him and offered him the Position.
The "Game" is in full swing now. EVERYTHING you have seen so far will look like nothing more than "child's play" from here on out lol

Fun fact: the Actress who plays Cersei (Lena Headey) and the actor who plays Bronn (Jerome Flynn) used to date. It ended very poorly and they refused to ever do a scene together. The only time you ever see Bronn and Cersei in the same room is in this episode when they briefly pass each other in the hall outside Tyrion's room
Why tf do people keep pushing these rumors that they ended on bad terms, that’s not true, but of them said not to believe those rumors and that they are still friendly towards each other
You don’t know anything about either of these actors so stop pushing rumors about them and actually listen to what they say

@@c.h.n.j.5302 like I said, this is the only scene they have together for 8 seasons, and the one he's referring to. There are scenes which Bronn specifically leaves to avoid having him and Lena together. Any scene that has Cersei specifically talking to Bronn happens off screen (offering a castle and to marry Lollys Stokeworth) or has Qyburn stand in for Cersei for no apparent reason (season 8).
The comment from Jerome Flynn was simply him being nice and trying to downplay the situation to avoid the media digging into his personal life. It's pretty clear that between the onset rumors and the reality that the show went out of its way to never have the two interact that it was intentional.
Just thought of something. Two different Natalies played Ann Boelyn. Portman and Dormer.
This is what happened in Harrenhal. When Tywin decides to abandon Harrenhal, he leaves The Mountain in charge of a very small Lannister force there. Soon the remaining Lannisters are attacked by the Tullys lead by Edmure Tully, Robb's uncle. The Tullys are trying to reclaim their homeland the Riverlands, where Harrenhal is. The much smaller Lannister force is defeated, but The Mountain manages to retreat back to the Westerlands, which is the stronghold of House Lannister. But before he leaves he slaughters all the Northern and Tully prisoners. That's the dead bodies Robb finds here.

Tywin hates Tyrion because it reminds him of his weak father Tytos. And of course because he's the walking talking reminder of his now dead wife. And it's also suspected that Tyrion is the son of the Mad King (theory) because at one tourney, the mad king was ogling Joanna Lannister, and the insult therefore made Tywin quit being the Hand. In the books too, he has silver blonde hair, similar to the Targaryens rather than the golden blonde of the Lannisters. I guess that's why Tywin said, because I can't prove you're not mine, because he suspects that Tyrion ain't really his son.
Glossing over the fact that people had even more prejudices about anyone different or with handicaps. I think that is always an elephant in the room when people want to talk about Tywin or anyone's feelings about him.

It was actually in the books, where Tyrion lost his nose in the Battle of Blackwater Bay. I'm not sure, but I think the decision was made to spare his nose in the show, to also spare the budget in addition to maintaining the viewer's connection, and compassion for his character...oddly enough. Much as they ultimately chose to change the eye color of the Targaryens from violet, to a more natural color. (Most likely the natural color of the actors.) I seem to remember that the violet contacts were so irritating, they were almost impossible to wear for Emilia Clarke.
Comparing the characters, as they're described in Martin's novels to how they appear in the show is interesting, to say the least. Googling an illustration of Tyrion from the books reveals that he especially looked different. In those, he was called the ugliest man in all of Westeros.

Tywin always acting like he doesn't need approval, gratitude, applause, or accolades... but Recall that Stage set up in the throne room, where he rides in on a white horse, and has to have Joffrey announce him as hand. Tywin is a boss, but he is proud, like a Lion, and he DOES like c to be the most revered man in the room.
Why pause, then continue to talk through the beginning of the scene. I'm sorry, it's a hang up of mine and I gotta always call it out.
Yeah, some may say it's subjective, but I think season 4 is objectively the best season. 4 *HUGE* episodes in addition to all the "normal" shite..."normal" is definitely subjective. 😉
The show writers disrespected Sam *BIG* *TIME* in that opening scene when Commander Mormont asks, "Did you send the ravens?" In the books he *did* get the ravens off...he *did* his job.
In the show however, he didn't....because the show writers wanted to make in out as incompetent, but he most definitely wasn't.
Tyrions eyes were also mismatched, one green, one black.
Tywin is *fully* aware of The Mountain’s methods...that's why he uses him as he does. I know you dig Tywin. There's no debating his Boss level. But he's a brutal horrid human. He knows fully well what the Mountain does to people...he orders it. He's ordered the Mountain to murder Prince Rheagar's wife, Elia Martell, and their children, knowing fully well *how* it would be done...more on that in season 4. He's always wanted Tyrion dead and treated him worse than dirt all his life...he's a vile and contemptible father....he's the monster he sees Tyrion as.
Ser Barriston feels he failed the Targaryens because he was with Rheagar at the battle of the Trident when Robert killed Rheagar, but couldn't protect him, and wasn't there to protect King Aerys when Jaime killed him.

Sam sent the ravens in the books!!! And Cersei’s reference to Tyrion losing his nose was a nod to the book readers. I appreciate your love for the character Tywin. Charles Dance plays him to perfection! For me he is a character I love to hate. I feel that so much of his character comes down to the chip on his shoulder that he carries because his father was a weak character who was letting the family name down. I know that this world is full of characters that do cruel and brutal things. But so much of what Tywin did, to reestablish the reputation of House Lannister was worse than cruel. At some point you might want to look into the full story behind the Rains of Castemere. And I don’t think he truly loves his children. Rather he is more concerned with what they can do for the legacy of House Lannister. He is horrified by the fact that he has a son who is a dwarf. The story behind Tyrion’s first wife and what happened to her is expanded upon in the books. And I find that whole thing quite unforgivable. On top of the fact that Tywin is quite a hypocrite about the subject. That said, I think it is wonderful for people to enjoy the variety of characters in this universe whether they are heroes, villains, or as in most cases something in between. I love the character of Barristan Selmy, who is still alive in the book series. He believes that he is an outstanding knight. But when you get to know his character on a deeper level in the books he has plenty of flaws. What I find really interesting is how the author is using Barristan juxtaposed with Jamie, Brienne, the Mountain, the Hound and others to explore the meaning of a true knight, chivalry and upholding a code of honor and the vows one takes. It is a very interesting aspect of the books. And in the end it feels like the two characters who have best exemplified true knights are Brienne and the Hound, with neither of those two being actual knights. As far as the King’s Guard, they are supposed to be appointed for life. So when a new king ascends to the throne, they should inherit the previous King’s Guard. But in the case of the throne being taken over, like Robert did, that would change things up. And I know others have already told you that Robert invited Barristan to serve on his King’s Guard, as the Lord Commander. He could just as easily have sentenced him to the Wall or death as a traitor. Lastly, one little hint for enjoying the show. Don’t get too hung up on trying to figure out consistent timelines. It will drive you crazy!

Dude, be very careful listening to the so called "experts" on what the best and worst seasons are. I recently had a reaction ruined for me and many others because certain people love to try and influence the reactors to think their way about the show. You could tell it influenced this person because they started reacting to things at a certain point that they didn't react to before this point. All I am saying is try to ignore it when people say this is good or that is bad and just watch the show and judge it for yourself if you liked it or not. And don't let other people try to influence you one way or another. Because i can tell from that comment you made that these are the best two seasons they already are trying to. They are the best two seasons to them. They might not be for you or I. The most likely reason they said they are the best two seasons is because they are the last two seasons the author wrote the books for. That being said, there is a lot of high value entertainment after season 4 to not discount the later seasons as not being as good. Again, watch them for yourself then decide. Don't listen to the ones trying to influence you because that will ruin the reaction and not make it yours but theirs.

Just think of Tyrion in the previous season. He was wheeling and dealing, moving and shaking. He was dunking on Pycelle and em. How many times did we say "maan Tyrion is smart" "damn Tyrion is making moves". Compare those moments to the scene right here. He looks pathetically small and helpless in that room with his father. Because that's what Tywin's presence does. That is what real power looks like.

Tywin definitely is ok with his men being savages. He told them in seasons 1 & 2 to burn the villagers & the villages & he knows the mountain is well known rapist & murderer so when he sends him to send a message he knows perfectly well what he’s gonna do.
This is my favorite scene with Tywin & Tyrion he owns him! Yes, Tywin is a boss, and hard to actually hate. He’s smarter than most people on the show, and in his own way, as honest as Ned Stsrk. But It’s interesting that he has two huge weaknesses … his hatred for Tyrion, and his blindness to what’s going on with Jamie and Cersei.
And for what it’s worth, several of the insults that Tywin used here against Tyrion are textbook examples of real-world prejudices specifically against dwarfs / Little People - his descriptions of what he looks like walking around as a dwarf, the idea that dwarfs are lecherous, deceptive, and cunning, etc. So Tywin’s hatred is for sure because his mother died giving birth to him, but he also just plain has prejudice against Tyrion for being what he is.
Cersei and Bron dated in real life but they broke on bad terms. So you will never see them speak to each other.

Welcome to Season 3, my personal favourite. Big Bad Daddy Tywin is at it again, I love his character, but he is awful to Tyrion. Though you can kind of understand why, his wife was the love of his life, in those days you married for political reasons, but Tywin actually loved Joanna, and to lose her to be replaced by a dwarf, it would have been heartbreaking for him (however much of a heart Tywin has, lol). Though that doesn't excuse why he is that way with Tyrion, you can understand why.
