      GamerZakh, I don't know how to share this with you directly... but have you considered using Pulover's Macro Creator with older games? I find the lack of hotkeys very cumbersome so old titles like Caesar and Might & Magic I set up macros. Takes only about 10 minutes to set up let me know if you'd like help :).

    another tip, once you've set up a timber yard going beside a forest, you can delete the forest and that yard will keep on working forever. obviously since you've deleted the forest you can't add more timber yards after that point in that area, but if you're in dire need of space, it's a handy tip :)

    I found the 9x9 block works on desert maps aswell if you place the housing one tile away from the surrounding road. You would be unable to squeeze as many people in as a 7x7 but once they upgrade to Large Insulae there will be alot more space for population. Because only 1 tile of a 2x2 building needs water access for the whole 2x2 building to benefit from it.

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  7 років тому +17

      Oh that's a good trick. If I ever do an advanced techniques video I'll include exploiting 2x2 houses so it can expand 3 tiles away.

      my problem is: if you have a 2x4 housing block, i don't know if i will have two 2x2 house or only one(and don"t know if i have a way to control it). so if i do a 9x9 housing block, i have a 50/50 chance that my corner don't have access to water

  • @darthparallax5207
    @darthparallax5207 6 років тому +2

    The Destination Walkers section at approximately 40 minutes is easily the best thing I've seen from your channel so far! Mastering getting Market ladies to deliver goods without building extra Markets saves a whole 2x2 area and makes room for an entire additional god's temple in your overall city!
    It is also seen that you only require 1 Temple to evolve a house up to Casa level!
    Adding this to the information of Wheat Prioritization, we get the following conclusion:
    Let's assume the Capua Map. The Farmland is all to the south.
    If you build a small housing block for employees, lets say a 5x7 or 3x5 strip, with a Granary and -no- Market, and 3 or 4 Wheat Farms;
    Then a little North you build a second housing block, a proper 9x9 block with a Market but -no- Granary, the North Market lady -should supply both Housing sections with all of their goods as she is forced to travel to the Granary near the Farmland to pick up her Wheat?
    Yo could then repeat this pattern further East on the map, and thus end up with two small Farming Housing Blocks, and two large City Housing blocks, and the entire map could be supplied with only 2 Granaries and 2 Markets!
    This saves a significant amount of Time, Finances, Employees, and Space! Further, with 4 separate Housing Districts, you could probably get away with placing 1 Temple in each of them, giving your Whole City a coverage of 4 Gods out of 5. From what I recall, Capua does not have a Sea Trade route?
    You would need to add the 5th God to complete the level I'm sure, and you might have to build a second temple to each God as well.....so it might be better to build 5 small 3x5 districts, each specializing in 1 God, and arranged with the Granaries so that 3 large 9x9 districts' Market ladies pass every house. I was able to fit 6 9x9 districts on Capua when I passed it on luck, stubbornness, and overbuilding, so there should be space for 3 9x9s and 5 3x5s.
    To supply all 8 with clean Water might be the trickiest part, but that is relatively easy to solve!
    GamerZakh, does that still sound like overbuilding to you, and how large of a Pottery industry would you recommend to support it?

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  6 років тому +2

      Overbuilding depends on what you want to achieve. If you are aiming to win the map, if the population requirement is 1000 people building any more than that is overbuilding. If you're trying to play more sandbox style then you can build as much as you want. I've been giving myself special personal objectives in my newest playthrough, so anything is okay really. As for number of things, I rarely count anything in this game. I go off of 'feel' and just visually assessing the system. I don't even count how much food a farm can produce in a year.

    • @darthparallax5207
      @darthparallax5207 6 років тому

      ok, I get that there are a lot of numbers to count and most people don't count them all--- but, is there any number you do count? do you know how many houses you use or is that all by feel to?
      I ask because you seem to be pretty efficient at getting your goals done in a single housing block, and I am still struggling with building extra housing blocks even when I am ''just trying to win'' and not really actually trying to Sandbox it.

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  6 років тому +1

      Hmm it's hard to say without seeing your city. Maybe you can send me a save file? I could even do a city-building doctor episode to properly explain things. But yeah, I don't really count anything. I just look and see if it's not enough pottery I add more production. If it's too much I remove some. I know I generally have 4 workshops for a full 9x9 block if I want to evolve them to large insulaes, but at lower levels that will be way overproduction. 4 is probably still too many but I like having to s of surplus.

    Thanks, this vid helped a ton! I had tried to cram everything in a really tight space with a grid system and it was going well in the beginning, then out of nowhere thieves.. I looked at what my advisor said, high crime rate. I thought thats impossible I have a prefect on every block. Well the game doesn't lie I thought and started deleteing tents, gardens, etc. Just to fit more prefects, and it worked. Until I started expanding again... Now I understand, I totally confused all the prefects in town with my grid system. So much pain just to have a historical looking city :-( Just one of a hundred different problems this vid made me understand. Looking at you market lady! It was very educational and not boring at all, I usually can't stand long tutorial videos but I diden't even realize it was an hour long until I had watched half :-) Now let's watch some more!

    I've been playing this game since its release so I've known about most of these tips for a long time. But to be honest I don't use a lot of them. I've beaten the game so many times that when I play now it's more about the aesthetic of the city more than anything. The added difficulty of building a city that you have to work a little harder to make work makes it more entertaining. So I don't use gatehouses and the odd shaped roads and 9x9 squares. But I think all your Caesar videos are great. It's good to see that people still love and play this game enough that there is an audience for tutorial videos. Thank you.

    Thanks for this video. I don't remember reading the how the gateway worked in the game itself so that was the most shocking to me. When I was a teenager, I once managed to get patricians to come, but couldn't evolve them further because I was building 3x3 blocks. As I got older, I started building 4x4s and 3x3s mixing them up according to the space I wanted to fill. I once thought about building width-2-er kind of blocks but never got really far on it, so this video is quite the eye-opener for me.
    Also, when you were talking about warehouses and granaries and population started to emigrated I kept on thinking it was the lack of market (although it was probably because you wanted to make a point first.
    In the end, I learned a LOT in less than an hour. Thanks.
    I'll try using these tips next time I play. I usually aim for houses or insulaes for my workforce and would try to go to patricians in 1 place only. I used the population censor and noticed the graphs but I didn't know english enough back then so I was learning by experimentation. Thus, I would usually build a block at a time (except for the 1-2 houses near workshops thing, which would be one or two whole blocks, so yeah, thanks once again, as repetitive as it may be.

      Yeah I did get pretty good, I redid a playthrough where each mission I had to do a crazy block design or challenge. Something about that caused a bunch of bugs I've never seen before too haha.

    Главное что я понял для себя:
    1. Два типа жилья:
    - развитое (налоги, бОльшая доля населения, и тд);
    - рабочие палатки (по немногу, но везде где в отдаленных местах нужно задействовать производство);
    2. Разделение производственных районов от жилищной элиты вратами, что б вся социальная инфраструктура бродила только внутри жилых кварталов.

    This problem of old populations gave me a ton of troubles, especially for cities like Lutetia, where we have to get 10k people. Really interesting guide there ! :)
    There are still a couple of points I still cannot understand (I'm gonna take some precise examples) :
    1. Imagine you place a prefecture on the corner of a 9x9 bloc, just next to a gatehouse. Sometimes, depending on the angle and the corner, for some reason, the prefect will initially (and consistently) cross the gatehouse on the wrong side and walk as an idiot on an empty road... Dunno if I'm clear
    2. I don't understand why sometimes, children running away from schools just do not cover a whole 9x9 house block. After looking at their movements carefully, I noticed they sometimes consider corners as intersections and come back, or sometimes, they just disappear too early in the middle of the block so there is just one or two houses that are not covered.
    Otherwise, just a comment about prefects: I feel like they are pretty weak against any enemy warrior.
    I prefer using my own setup where I force a bunch of gladiators and lions to walk through a *very* long road with a ton of corners in front of towers to get to the colosseum. That way they infinitely slow down an entire army while the towers clean them up ^^
    Just need a single fort of javelins to deal with the biggest army of Mediolanum/Lindum x)

    an easier way to measure your block size is to build your houses first, 1 house square costs 10 gold so the houses on side 9x9 cost 180 and houses on side of 7x7 cost 140. easier than manually counting squares.

    I've just switched over to 8x8 housing blocks. Sure it might need 12 more water employees per block in desert missions, but you can evolve everything to Large/Grand Insulae much more neatly this way to a perfect fit (if things are really stable you might even be able to remove the extra fountains).
    Because every single of those leftover 1x1 Medium Insulae you'd have otherwise consumes the same amount of pottery/furniture as a 2x2 unit (which can house 4x as many people), so not having those 1x1 houses saves resources (which gives better market stability) and slightly helps with prosperity as well

    Easiest solution to the "aging population" is just to bulldoze the housing, wait for displaced people to leave the map, and place new housing. Can either do whole city all at once, or for a safer method so it doesn't all burn down, you can split it into two halves.
    I like to split each map into two halves: phase 1 is where my city is kept as small as possible just using tents and is based on industry and exports, for a big profit. I run the game on 100% and 50 years flies by in a few minutes - typically I have to bulldoze the housing once or so. When the population is aging a second time and all the invasions have stopped, I wipe the whole city and start again with ~200,000 in the bank and a huge personal store (paying Caesar salary until December then switching to below current level, costing only 1 favor point).
    Second gen city is full of palaces, capable of hitting 100+ prosperity etc

    My first Caeser 3 video on youtube and right off the back one of my main preconceptions from playing this game in early 00s has been shattered. I didn't know that you could make lots of little independant road loops. I assumed that every piece of road had too be linked together, all the way to the blue & red flags :D Or maybe that was just how I played, as it made more real life logical sense for a city and it was so ingrained that I thought it was a rule.

    • @HockeyWerewolf

      Furtheremore I only used 2 Gatehouses (other than those for gaps in walls for soldiers to pass thourough). One gatehouse at either end of the city near the flags to save some time with people walking there unnnecessarily >
