Downtown Salt Lake will be completely unrecognizable in 10 years. With at least a dozen towers (18+ floors) either under construction now or will be in the next year or so, plus many more likely to come in the next few years, by 2030 Salt Lake's skyline will more than double in size. It should be similar in size to what Denver is now. There are also around 100 'midsize' and 'highrise' (4-17 floor buildings) development projects that are under construction or planned in and around the downtown and the sugar house neighborhood that will make Salt Lake feel significantly more urban than Boise as well. So if that is what you are looking for, than Salt Lake is a much better bet than Boise. It will always be home for me.
Salt Lakes Airport, Freeway's, Downtown, Public Transportation is 5X the size of Boise's. We Have NBA Jazz, MLS RealSaltLake, TripleAAA Bee's Baseball. Pac12 UofU University. 45min from World Class Skiing....Hosted Olympics 2002...making bid for 2030-2034. Way more diverse as far as minorities go. One of the largest Gay populations in the country LGBTQ have their own Chamber of Commerce. More Mormons live in Cali then anywhere.
Salt Lakes the crossroads of the West. You keep bringing up Things not related to Salt Lake...Sundance is Park City..Natiinal Parks are Southern Utah....if You go that route....Utah and California are the only places in the world where you can Snow Ski half the day then catch a flight to St. George and golf in sunny weather in the Same Day!!...Salt Lakes WAAAAAYYYY further along in everything then Boise

This is a terrible review. He misses the fact that 2.6 million Utahns live on the Wasatch Front which is Ogden down to SLC to Provo. If you were to drive from Ogden to Provo you would not know you ever left the city. Comparing that to Boise with Meridian Idaho is not even the same thing lol. Yes SLC downtown core has higher crime any suburb like Draper, Provo has very low crime. SLC has 8 ski resorts right next to the cities on the front. And the mountains for those that live on the east side are only 20 minutes to get to or right in your backyard. In Salt Lake Valley snow rarely stays on the ground and thus the snow comparison is also terrible. If you live in Park City then you will be shoveling tons. Anyway this video is a complete miss as his main points are not accurate!
You make some great points. I end up using my snow blower 2-5 times each winter...yet can be at a ski resort in 20 minutes. It's magical if you love to ski, and in the spring you can ski and golf in the same day. Salt Lake City also has more diversity of experience, especially when you consider the entire Wasatch Front.
I’ve lived in OR, WA, CO, AZ & UT and Utah is my favorite place to live, play and work by far. I think the climate is really ideal and there is so much here to explore. I make a good living here in Aerospace manufacturing as well so I don’t anticipate ever needing to leave for work reasons.
I've lived in both cities (each one for multiple years) and it is a VERY easy choice. BOISE for the win - by far. The nightlife in downtown Boise is significantly better than SLC. The city itself is incredibly beautiful, vibrant, and very safe - even at night. As a result of it's massive recent growth, most areas in the city are new, modern, clean, and attractive. This is also true for the larger suburbs of Boise (Meridian pop. 130,000, Nampa: pop. 105,000). And MOST IMPORTANTLY: The people in Boise are MUCH nicer. They are polite, they smile, and they're more down to earth than people in Salt Lake. Seriously, the difference between the overall quality (general kindness, manners, attitudes) of people in each city is surprisingly stark. Anyways, if anyone wants information on either city, feel free to ask! I'd be happy to answer any questions. :)
@@jamalbenhamou - Boise is definitely warmer. Temps over 100 degrees are more common in Boise during the summer months. On the flip side, winters are definitely more severe in SLC. Any overnight snow usually melts away during the next day in Boise, whereas several inches of snow can stick around for months in Utah (which is great if you love snow!). :)
The snow stats are likely a little skewed because of the snowfall in the mountains as opposed to the valley (where people live). SLC in general doesn't get a ton of snow. In my experience, the valley probably has snow on the ground for about 30 days in a dry year, and 30-40 days in a wet year. At worst, a storm may drop a foot of snow, but usually it's a couple inches that melts away after a day or two. We don't get really cold either, which is nice. Rarely do we have highs below freezing (lows do drop below in the winter) and we also don't get super hot either (a few 100 degree days in the height of summer (mostly 80s and 90s) but that isn't too bad since its a dry climate). So if you are from the midwest or east coast, our climate is MUCH more mild than yours. The bad air quality that people talk about for SLC is really only once in a while where inversions (thanks to the mountains) trap pollution and it gets really bad (similar to Los Angeles (whose mountains cause the same effect)). On those days just stay indoors most of the time and your fine. Typically though it's not really a problem at all.
Google says the French pronounce it with a z I think Americans make up their own pronunciation that isn’t correct like la Croix being pronounced as la croy

@@AlecDenston They are talking about recommissioning the pioneer route which would go from slc to seattle and through boise. It's not highspeed, but it's the most realistic route as of today. I do think one day there will be routes all through the mountains similar to what switzerland has, but I think we are a far way off from that today. But hey! a guy can dream! Today there are just not enough people for them to consider this, but as the population grows it would make a lot of sense considering how horrible the roads can get in the winter. Either way, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks it would be amazing.
Salt Lake definitely a bigger W but boise looks like a nicer place to live if you wanna have a family all though both are pretty good. Lot of my friends from cali moved to salt lake

Agreed! St. George is actually one of the cities I picked in my retirement video. I think for active retirees, who want a quiet community it makes a lot sense. It's also only a couple hours to Vegas and not too much further to So Cal.
Salt Lake City as a city is a lot different than many of the surrounding suburbs. Just something to be aware of. The suburbs are likely going to be less diverse but safer. If you have kids and want space, the suburbs are great around SLC.
@@BrothaontheGo Most of the suburb areas are really nice. Generally speaking, The suburbs on the east side of Salt Lake County are more upscale than the suburbs west. Davis county north of SLC and Utah County South of SLC have nice communities but you’ll have a commute into the city.
Hello, I don’t have good eyesight. I have a disability basically and when I went to Boise Idaho, what I’ve noticed is that capital cities will treat you like you’re a human being because they’re trying to treat you like that so people actually talk to you and not be afraid of you like you’re an alien, I know women will ask out men and are excepting of them that they would actually treat them like human beings in Salt Lake City and they actually have special gifts invoice they would actually ask you out when they do this in Salt Lake City and except that you’re a human being ❤ 0:50 when they have a disability. Some people with disabilities are prodigies and not recognized for what they have and other things I want to know how they would treatmen in Salt Lake City, as heavenly father has told me to move there as accepting as they were in Boise, Idaho thank you
Salt Lake City is very liberal. They have voted for democrap mayors for many years now. Most of the conservatives have moved out of Salt Lake if they could.
@@BrothaontheGo . I’ve lived in both cities long enough to know that Boise is preferable for me to live in because of the small town/ small city atmosphere. The last time that I lived in Boise was for three months in 2000. I rented a small room in a small house from a man that owned a bobcat! It helps to have reliable transportation for getting to work; and for driving around the city to get things done like grocery shopping; the car that I had wasn’t in very good condition so I left Boise to return to the thoroughbred race tracks in Kentucky; and Florida that year.
This video was very well put together, thank you. These are the 2 cities I’ve focused in on moving to after finishing up college in the northeast. I’d honestly be thrilled with living in either one. Slight advantage to Boise because of the lower crime rate, but cannot rule out SLC with those incredible national parks.
Hey TGI! Thanks for watching! I can tell you this, I went to school in Arizona and got a chance to visit all 5 national parks in Utah and it is SOOOO fun! Utah is probably one of the most unique places in terms of the nature beauty distributed throughout the state. I will say this, I made a video about moving to Idaho and many residents commented about having a hard time affording the cost of living with so many moving from out of the area. I would really focus on securing employment before making a move to either place, but especially Boise. Either way, I hope you can finish college out strong and have a great move out west. If you move to Utah, just go anywhere outside of Salt Lake, north or south and it's quite safe. I live in Syracuse 25 mins north and it was rated as one of the top 5 safest cities in the country a few years back. Most areas in Utah are very safe.

Salt lake is simply STUNNING! A ton of history and then natural beauty if the region is unmatched. The neighborhoods feel like small towns to me in some ways! And there’s nothing like seeing lights in every direction from your window at night! I lived in the middle of oregon in a town of 10000. The climate is identical to the climate of my hometown in OR. Love it! Also I love the road design if SLC.
Yeah, if places do the light rail early on and build around it can work pretty well. Boise is getting crowded rn though. They may have to do something soon.
I like how you compared the closer logistics on traveling to neighboring cites, I never looked at it like that. I’ve been asking myself a lot more recently on the differences of SLC and Boise since my sister and bro in law moved to SLC for work. I think Boise gets a bad rap when it comes to diversity and I think what was going on in Northern Idaho 25 years ago makes that shadow on the southern side of the state which isn’t really fair. My other point is that there wasn’t much to move here for if you were searching new career opportunities. One smaller note is that there is a above average religious community in these areas with the LDS leading and a lot of Christian affiliated churches with the Nazarenes have if a big presence in the Nampa area where NNU is located. I’ve lived in a few much bigger cities that were highly ranked as more diverse but I just don’t see on what categories they’re using to make these claims. I have friends in almost all ethnic backgrounds and according to the charts that this isn’t possible. Maybe it’s all political based, I have a hard time believing anything on the TV anymore and that’s why I’m here on UA-cam. Again thanks for your videos, you’re doing something right!!
Yea, as someone who loves day trips ot is important to add that. That's true, NNU is in Nampa. I knew a few people who attended NNU. One of them loved it and the other hated it. As far as the diversity, I am more referring to population and culture than racism, many people like having different experiences that usually more diverse places offer. One place that is usually not mentioned about Salt Lake City is "gravity hill," which is just east and north of the Capitol. When you feel you're walking "down" it you're in fact going "up" the hill. It's one of the more amazing local optical illusions. There's also quite a vibrant restaurant scene here, something for virtually all tastes. And, not to be missed is a small park near downtown called "Gilgal Gardens" which explores in creative ways Mormonism's relationship to Masonry. Very interesting. Finally, minutes away from Salt Lake City to the East is Millcreek Canyon, which has some of the most breathtaking hikes I've ever seen -- the Bowman Trail is certainly one of my favorites (but it's best to go in August when the wildflowers are at their peak).
Go to SLC please, Boise is full lol. Good luck finding a job here that pays the bills here anyways, wages are very far behind the cost of living, have been for a while & are only getting worse. Overall, most of the facts in this vid are pretty spot on, except for the education bit. We don't value education at all here, we have some of the lowest scores in the country and we vote to reduce funding for schools almost every year.
@@BrothaontheGo yeah, I've lived here all my life. I almost had to move out of state myself because I couldn't find another place after my lease expired a few months ago. Housing availably is just as big of an issue as affordability now too it seems. I don't personally know a ton of people moving out of state. Most folks are being pushed out of the Boise/meridian area into places like Nampa or Garden city so they can still somewhat afford rent. One of my buddies did just moved to IL & another to CO earlier this year though. A lot of my friends & family have been pushed into the Nampa/Caldwell area recently too (myself included).
Ok, those areas are at least pretty close to Boise still. What is the difference in rent between Nampa/Caldwell and Boise? Also, what do think of the Nampa/Caldwell area?
Yeah, I'm sure it's less time/mileage compared to most what folks moving here are used to wherever it is they moved from. When I signed this lease, units in Nampa were about 5-10% less than comparable places in Boise or Meridian. Caldwell is closer to 15% cheaper, even less to choose from there though. Not quite as nice of an area in Caldwell either though. Nampa's not bad at all, still relatively safe with a lot of kind neighbors for the most part. Surprisingly, it seems to be much busier than Boise. Traffic is notably worse & there is the sugar beet factory out here which isn't the best smell if you're downwind.
@@sawyer4981 Public Schools should be abolished in Idaho. If we weren't forced to pay for Schools through taxes, then Idaho taxes could be cut in half. Public Schools are far more expensive than Private Schools and score worse in tests. Idaho is the likely most pro Public School Abolition state in the country, so I think it would be a good idea to Abolish the Idaho Public Schools.
Many, many thanks for this. I've lived in SLC for many years now, but if I had to choose another city, Boise would certainly be on my short list. Both cities have a great deal to offer.
You touched on professional sports and said how there's less to do in Boise, but I'll drive this home as I worked in the tourism industry in SLC. Concerts with country musicians and old pop music groups like Back Street Boys draw loads of people from Boise, and you can identify them on sight from most men from there driving pickups, wearing blue jeans, hoodies, especially camo hoodies, work boots, and baseball caps. Boise isn't getting visited by big musicians on national tours the way Salt Lake is.

Oh, gotcha. If you are moving from Minnesota, the Utah winter might feel like a warm spring day to you lol. I have definitely been told that the suburbs are where it's at right now. If you are looking in the area, I'd recommend visiting if you can before making the move. But, it sounds like from north of SLC to almost Provo has become one major metro area. Most of the suburbs of Salt Lake City are considerably more Mormon than the City itself. So it might not be unreasonable to suggest to newcomers that they not move to one of our suburbs unless they're already LDS.
I think you unintentionally made Boise sound really good. 😂 Considering blue states are more crime ridden than red ones. The less SL is to New York the better. Stay strong Utah.

I'd like to see the "diversity" update with the new census. You basically said that SLC has more diversity because there are more hispanic people as a percentage. The other ethinicity numbers looked pretty similar.

But, in my videos if I am comparing two cities and one is marginally higher in all races and one race is significantly higher then it is objectively more diverse. Gotcha, to be clear I did look that up, but my biggest problem is due to the 'rona many events, gatherings, and restaurants have shut down. I completely agree that you learn a lot about traditions and culture when sitting down to a meal with others of a different culture. But, I could see myself getting nasty comments from people saying our culture is about more than just our food. But, I guess ya can't please everyone. So, I decided to highlight the LDS Church as a part of the culture instead. Thanks for your feedback!

Salt Lake City is definitely the bigger city and with that, comes bigger city problems like crime and homelessness. Salt Lake is probably more comparable to Portland than Boise. Crime here is likely due to many factors: 1. Salt Lake has a strong gang population that has existed in the city since the 1990s. A lot of the gang activity was imported from Southern California and has kept a presence, specifically on the city's west-side, for nearly 30 years now. Surprisingly, a good chunk of the gang activity actually comes from the Tongan Crip Gang (TCG), which has many members affiliated with the LDS Church. 2. Salt Lake is a poorer city than Boise and poverty, unfortunately, frequently leads to more crime. The areas impacted by violent crime are typically the poorer communities in central city and the west-side. Property crime is a bit more spread out. 3. As I mentioned, Salt Lake, despite having a smaller overall population, is much bigger than Boise when you include the surrounding areas. City population doesn't mean much often because it only counts the limits of a specific city. But Salt Lake County has a population of nearly 1.2 million and pretty much the entire county is in the sphere of Salt Lake. Because of the population, and the strains of a larger population, you get the same issues that other larger cities face. Again, which is why maybe a comparison of SLC and Boise isn't entirely apt (Boise and Albuquerque would be a better comparison, imo). 4. Salt Lake has a perception of being very family friendly and very safe. This has always been the case. As you said, the reality doesn't necessarily live up to the perception. But that perception often leads families with troubled teens to relocate to Salt Lake in hopes that they'll somehow settle down a bit here, especially teens who grew up in places like Los Angeles. Unfortunately, they get here and join specific gangs - as was the case with a lot of the influx of Tongans who moved to Utah in the 90s and fell in with the Crips. Their families thought being in a 'safe' city like Salt Lake would save them...but that perception turned out to be false and it just grew the problem citywide.

I live in central oregon, and the climate in SLC is nearly Identical. I love it here in SOC

The bad air quality that people talk about for SLC is really only once in a while where inversions (thanks to the mountains) trap pollution and it gets really bad (similar to Los Angeles (whose mountains cause the same effect)). On those days just stay indoors most of the time and your fine. Typically though it's not really a problem at all.

@@AlecDenston They are talking about recommissioning the pioneer route which would go from slc to seattle and through boise. It's not highspeed, but it's the most realistic route as of today. I do think one day there will be routes all through the mountains similar to what switzerland has, but I think we are a far way off from that today. But hey! a guy can dream! Today there are just not enough people for them to consider this, but as the population grows it would make a lot of sense considering how horrible the roads can get in the winter. Either way, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks it would be amazing.

Agreed! St. George is actually one of the cities I picked in my retirement video. I think for active retirees, who want a quiet community it makes a lot sense. It's also only a couple hours to Vegas and not too much further to So Cal.
St. George is gorgeous and a wonderful retirement community. Also highly conservative.
Salt Lake City as a city is a lot different than many of the surrounding suburbs. Just something to be aware of. The suburbs are likely going to be less diverse but safer. If you have kids and want space, the suburbs are great around SLC.

@@BrothaontheGo Most of the suburb areas are really nice. Generally speaking, The suburbs on the east side of Salt Lake County are more upscale than the suburbs west. Davis county north of SLC and Utah County South of SLC have nice communities but you’ll have a commute into the city.

I have a disability basically and when I went to Boise Idaho, what I’ve noticed is that capital cities will treat you like you’re a human being because they’re trying to treat you like that so people actually talk to you and not be afraid of you like you’re an alien, I know women will ask out men and are excepting of them that they would actually treat them like human beings in Salt Lake City and they actually have special gifts invoice they would actually ask you out when they do this in Salt Lake City and except that you’re a human being ❤ 0:50 when they have a disability. Some people with disabilities are prodigies and not recognized for what they have and other things I want to know how they would treatmen in Salt Lake City, as heavenly father has told me to move there as accepting as they were in Boise, Idaho thank you

The last time that I lived in Boise was for three months in 2000.
I rented a small room in a small house from a man that owned a bobcat!
It helps to have reliable transportation for getting to work; and for driving around the city to get things done like grocery shopping; the car that I had wasn’t in very good condition so I left Boise to return to the thoroughbred race tracks in Kentucky; and Florida that year.

Its actually much cheaper to fly out of the Salt Lake airport than the Boise airport since its a much bigger airport and Delta hub.

These are the 2 cities I’ve focused in on moving to after finishing up college in the northeast. I’d honestly be thrilled with living in either one. Slight advantage to Boise because of the lower crime rate, but cannot rule out SLC with those incredible national parks.
Hey TGI! Thanks for watching! I can tell you this, I went to school in Arizona and got a chance to visit all 5 national parks in Utah and it is SOOOO fun! Utah is probably one of the most unique places in terms of the nature beauty distributed throughout the state. I will say this, I made a video about moving to Idaho and many residents commented about having a hard time affording the cost of living with so many moving from out of the area. I would really focus on securing employment before making a move to either place, but especially Boise. Either way, I hope you can finish college out strong and have a great move out west. If you move to Utah, just go anywhere outside of Salt Lake, north or south and it's quite safe. I live in Syracuse 25 mins north and it was rated as one of the top 5 safest cities in the country a few years back. Most areas in Utah are very safe.

Salt lake is simply STUNNING! A ton of history and then natural beauty if the region is unmatched. The neighborhoods feel like small towns to me in some ways! And there’s nothing like seeing lights in every direction from your window at night! I lived in the middle of oregon in a town of 10000. The climate is identical to the climate of my hometown in OR. Love it! Also I love the road design if SLC.

I like how you compared the closer logistics on traveling to neighboring cites, I never looked at it like that. I’ve been asking myself a lot more recently on the differences of SLC and Boise since my sister and bro in law moved to SLC for work. I think Boise gets a bad rap when it comes to diversity and I think what was going on in Northern Idaho 25 years ago makes that shadow on the southern side of the state which isn’t really fair. My other point is that there wasn’t much to move here for if you were searching new career opportunities. One smaller note is that there is a above average religious community in these areas with the LDS leading and a lot of Christian affiliated churches with the Nazarenes have if a big presence in the Nampa area where NNU is located. I’ve lived in a few much bigger cities that were highly ranked as more diverse but I just don’t see on what categories they’re using to make these claims. I have friends in almost all ethnic backgrounds and according to the charts that this isn’t possible. Maybe it’s all political based, I have a hard time believing anything on the TV anymore and that’s why I’m here on UA-cam. Again thanks for your videos, you’re doing something right!!
Yea, as someone who loves day trips ot is important to add that. That's true, NNU is in Nampa. I knew a few people who attended NNU. One of them loved it and the other hated it. As far as the diversity, I am more referring to population and culture than racism, many people like having different experiences that usually more diverse places offer. One place that is usually not mentioned about Salt Lake City is "gravity hill," which is just east and north of the Capitol. When you feel you're walking "down" it you're in fact going "up" the hill. It's one of the more amazing local optical illusions. There's also quite a vibrant restaurant scene here, something for virtually all tastes. And, not to be missed is a small park near downtown called "Gilgal Gardens" which explores in creative ways Mormonism's relationship to Masonry. Very interesting. Finally, minutes away from Salt Lake City to the East is Millcreek Canyon, which has some of the most breathtaking hikes I've ever seen -- the Bowman Trail is certainly one of my favorites (but it's best to go in August when the wildflowers are at their peak).

Overall, most of the facts in this vid are pretty spot on, except for the education bit. We don't value education at all here, we have some of the lowest scores in the country and we vote to reduce funding for schools almost every year.

@@BrothaontheGo yeah, I've lived here all my life. I almost had to move out of state myself because I couldn't find another place after my lease expired a few months ago. Housing availably is just as big of an issue as affordability now too it seems.
I don't personally know a ton of people moving out of state. Most folks are being pushed out of the Boise/meridian area into places like Nampa or Garden city so they can still somewhat afford rent.
One of my buddies did just moved to IL & another to CO earlier this year though. A lot of my friends & family have been pushed into the Nampa/Caldwell area recently too (myself included).
Ok, those areas are at least pretty close to Boise still. What is the difference in rent between Nampa/Caldwell and Boise? Also, what do think of the Nampa/Caldwell area?
Yeah, I'm sure it's less time/mileage compared to most what folks moving here are used to wherever it is they moved from.
When I signed this lease, units in Nampa were about 5-10% less than comparable places in Boise or Meridian. Caldwell is closer to 15% cheaper, even less to choose from there though. Not quite as nice of an area in Caldwell either though.
Nampa's not bad at all, still relatively safe with a lot of kind neighbors for the most part. Surprisingly, it seems to be much busier than Boise. Traffic is notably worse & there is the sugar beet factory out here which isn't the best smell if you're downwind.
@@sawyer4981 Public Schools should be abolished in Idaho. If we weren't forced to pay for Schools through taxes, then Idaho taxes could be cut in half. Public Schools are far more expensive than Private Schools and score worse in tests.
Idaho is the likely most pro Public School Abolition state in the country, so I think it would be a good idea to Abolish the Idaho Public Schools.

You touched on professional sports and said how there's less to do in Boise, but I'll drive this home as I worked in the tourism industry in SLC.
Concerts with country musicians and old pop music groups like Back Street Boys draw loads of people from Boise, and you can identify them on sight from most men from there driving pickups, wearing blue jeans, hoodies, especially camo hoodies, work boots, and baseball caps.
Boise isn't getting visited by big musicians on national tours the way Salt Lake is.

Oh, gotcha. If you are moving from Minnesota, the Utah winter might feel like a warm spring day to you lol. I have definitely been told that the suburbs are where it's at right now. If you are looking in the area, I'd recommend visiting if you can before making the move. But, it sounds like from north of SLC to almost Provo has become one major metro area. Most of the suburbs of Salt Lake City are considerably more Mormon than the City itself. So it might not be unreasonable to suggest to newcomers that they not move to one of our suburbs unless they're already LDS.

I'd like to see the "diversity" update with the new census. You basically said that SLC has more diversity because there are more hispanic people as a percentage. The other ethinicity numbers looked pretty similar.

Honestly, I can see how it comes across kind of simplistic view of diversity in this video. The fact is neither city is very diverse and as long as everyone treats people with respect that is all anyone can ask of a city. But, in my videos if I am comparing two cities and one is marginally higher in all races and one race is significantly higher then it is objectively more diverse. Gotcha, to be clear I did look that up, but my biggest problem is due to the 'rona many events, gatherings, and restaurants have shut down. I completely agree that you learn a lot about traditions and culture when sitting down to a meal with others of a different culture. But, I could see myself getting nasty comments from people saying our culture is about more than just our food. But, I guess ya can't please everyone. So, I decided to highlight the LDS Church as a part of the culture instead. Thanks for your feedback!

Salt Lake City is definitely the bigger city and with that, comes bigger city problems like crime and homelessness. Salt Lake is probably more comparable to Portland than Boise. Crime here is likely due to many factors:
1. Salt Lake has a strong gang population that has existed in the city since the 1990s. A lot of the gang activity was imported from Southern California and has kept a presence, specifically on the city's west-side, for nearly 30 years now. Surprisingly, a good chunk of the gang activity actually comes from the Tongan Crip Gang (TCG), which has many members affiliated with the LDS Church.
2. Salt Lake is a poorer city than Boise and poverty, unfortunately, frequently leads to more crime. The areas impacted by violent crime are typically the poorer communities in central city and the west-side. Property crime is a bit more spread out.
3. As I mentioned, Salt Lake, despite having a smaller overall population, is much bigger than Boise when you include the surrounding areas. City population doesn't mean much often because it only counts the limits of a specific city. But Salt Lake County has a population of nearly 1.2 million and pretty much the entire county is in the sphere of Salt Lake. Because of the population, and the strains of a larger population, you get the same issues that other larger cities face. Again, which is why maybe a comparison of SLC and Boise isn't entirely apt (Boise and Albuquerque would be a better comparison, imo).
4. Salt Lake has a perception of being very family friendly and very safe. This has always been the case. As you said, the reality doesn't necessarily live up to the perception. But that perception often leads families with troubled teens to relocate to Salt Lake in hopes that they'll somehow settle down a bit here, especially teens who grew up in places like Los Angeles. Unfortunately, they get here and join specific gangs - as was the case with a lot of the influx of Tongans who moved to Utah in the 90s and fell in with the Crips. Their families thought being in a 'safe' city like Salt Lake would save them...but that perception turned out to be false and it just grew the problem citywide.
Way too much emphasis is put on "diversity" today. Diversity = weakness. Unity = strength.
