Wayfaring Stranger - The Petersens (LIVE) - Album Version

- We had already recorded a different version of this song on UA-cam, but for our album I wanted the song to sound sparse and reflective. I described what I wanted and in less than 24 hours, Emmett came up with this twisted version thus earning it the title "Wayfaring Stranger Gets Stranger" from mom on our chord charts. We ran through it during our last rehearsal before we drove to the studio in Nashville. When it was finally time to record "Wayfaring Stranger," I was skeptical since we had only three studio hours left and two more songs to record, but Troy, Dewey, and the band all worked together and completed this version of the song and I love it.

►My Ozark Mountain Home, the album:
We are so excited to release our new album! Our family grew up singing and playing around the campfire. It's truly some of our most cherished memories, and we hope you enjoy singing these songs with your family and friends just as much as we did.
We recorded the album at Forty-One Fifteen Studio in Nashville alongside Dewey Boyd as sound engineer, and our very own Troy Dixon who helped produce, mix and master.

►Lyrics:
I am a poor wayfaring stranger
Traveling through this world of woe
And there's no sickness, toil nor danger
In that bright land to which I go
I know dark clouds will gather around me
I know my way is rough and steep
And beauteous fields lie just before me
In Christ's redeemed, their vigils keep
I'm going there to see my father
I'm going there no more to roam
I'm just a-going over Jordan
I'm just a-going over home
I want to wear that crown of glory
When I get home to that bright land
I want to shout salvation's story
In concert with the blood-washed band
I'm going there to see my mother
She said she'd meet me when I go
I'm just a-going over Jordan
I'm just a-going over home
I'll soon be free from every trial
This form will rest beneath the sod
I'll drop the cross of self-denial
And enter in my home with God
I'm going there to see my Savior
Who shed for me His precious blood

Thanks Liz!
Good Morning Liz. Thank you for the lyrics. Nice to see you again. I really like the new album. A very Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.
Happy Thanksgiving, Liz! I'm always grateful for your closed captioning efforts.
Thanks Liz. As always a great job with the captions. Even when time is tight ... it all works perfectly! 😉
@@Sooch694 Hi Sooch. Another wonderful Friday! New video and new album. I have listened to it entirely twice this afternoon and it hasn't betrayed expectations - it's fantastic. Have a good weekend !!
I don't have a lot of people left in my life. These videos not only fill me with deep emotions but also exude a feeling of family, which I am forever grateful for. Don't take your loved ones for granted. Tell them you love them and hug them every chance you get. Merry Christmas y'all.
That is excellent advice. A very Merry Christmas to you, too.
Amen
Right there with you. Mom and Dad always listened to "On A Country Road" Sunday nights. Now that they're both gone, this kind of music hits me a lot harder than it used to.
Man!!! Where has this been all my life!!! We love you unseen, unmade, infinite Father!!! Thank you for sending us your Son, Jesus!!!
I am transported back to the Appalachia of the 1800s when I listen to this version.
Gasp - that bowed standup bass!
We ❤️yall here in ☘️Ireland. REAL PEOPLE - REAL MUSIC.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️😇
Tasty violin solo! Very nice all around. I like the bowing of the double bass also.
This song may as well have been written just for Julianne, she has the "high lonesome" tone and color to her voice that suit it perfectly.
Thank you Peterson Family, it reminds me of a little of the hill music in West Virginia and The The Waylon jamboree when I was little. Your parents taught you right. Thank you so much.
Her voice has such a airy delicate sound. Very unique that sounds awesome.
It's got some of the ethereal quality that makes Alison Krauss stand out so much, but there's a lot more to it that's perfect for this song.
Beautiful music from beautiful people
Juliannes soulfull voice is wonderful, this version is wonderful and captures the feel of the lyrics
Julianne, you knocked it out of the park on this song!! Thank you for sharing your loving witness for Christ and your talent together. Also, a great thanks to your mom, your siblings and Emmett as well. Music from the Petersens always hits the mark.
I don't remember any other version of this classic that so focused my attention on the deep, theological content of the lyrics as this did.
Unusual arrangement of the song as for me...took me two-times watch to recognize how the song was sounding in this version...More dramatic i would say..
I watch The Petersons to restore my hope in humanity. Everything just feels softer for a few minutes.
Amen.
"restore my hope in humanity" There ok but I woudn't go that far.
I agree with you.
Agreed, I need a healthy dose of this in my life to balance out the chaos..
Well said my friend, well said!
The Petersens doing what they Petersens do....That is make sweet, sweet, music.
I was blessed to hear this arrangement performed live by The Petersens at the Franklin Tn concert in August 2022. It is hauntingly beautiful.
Julianne has a mystic beautiful voice so awesome
This is the music of my childhood. Thank you.
Thank you all for the song.
Wow!!! Wow!!! What a powerful ending!!!
What a wonderful voice and sound...
What some great work with the bows ladies❤️
Amazing voice.
What a blessing 🙌, thank you for what you and your family do to glorify God and Our Savior Jesus Christ ! 🙏
How can I say 1000 times every time I love you, my dear family. Thank you for all the work you put in to your songs. You are so dear to my heart.
Great words ! Grand heart! Mansions of our soul in struggle !
That indescribable feeling when YT algorithm presents this video. This song is truly gold!
she is holding back so much, there is so much in there. cant wait shell develop and be more confident.
interresting voice color, very good control, huge potential for the upper echelon
Juliana is on the top of her game she's been so blessed with a unique voice
So we'll done. I had to watch it again. And... again.🦋
WOW.. Julianne has such a priceless utterly unique voice…. I’m surprised someone hasn’t found that voice and ran with it….
Along with her beautiful face she should get a awesome record contract…
Beautiful. The Petersens always show such respect and deep care for the music they perform and this piece is no different - delivered with real feeling and honesty. It's a privilege to be able to watch and listen to this beautiful, thoughtful arrangement. 🎶🎶🎶
That was so beautiful I nearly wept.
Everything here is beautiful, as always with the Petersens, especially Julianne's singing and Katie's fiddle playing on this one. Thank you for posting it.
One of my favorite songs as a young family man was "Rise Again" sung by the Rankin Family. For me it spoke strongly of God's love between my new daughter, myself and my family. Boy I'd cry to this while holding my baby girl. Pure Joy.
Your family group reminds me very much of the Rankin Family.
2 songs I'd so very wish you would sing. "Rise Again" and "Orangedale Whistle". Not asking much right? lol.
Anyhow, The Petersens are now my new Rankin Family in my older years.
God bless you all.
What a wonderful family ,a true testament to a Christian Mother and Father !
So, I was the guy in the audience in Council Bluffs that asked Katie if Julianne would be able to perform Wayfaring Stranger that night. While that was not possible, this is a very welcome surprise, a second version of my favorite Julianne lead vocal tune! Wonderful! 🤠
Julianne's voice is amazing as usual. And the dark ambience was amazing from the quarter note bends on guitar to the droning from the bass and fiddle. Awesome
That interplay between the bass and the fiddle … whoo!
WHAT A DISPLAY OF JUST PLAIN TALENT!
Julianne has been blessed with a voice. All are truly blessed while blessing us
This song sounded familiar to me, then I realized I had listened to it in the movie "1917", sung by the british army before going into battle against the germans. Beautiful song an superb interpetation, thank you!
Loved the sneeze!
Ok. It's all amazing. Her vocals, the dobro intro... but that fiddle solo? Damn...
Beautiful voice Young Lady and great music from the band. Love it!!!
Amazingly wonderful
All around wonderful
Julianne's voice. amazing.
Just love this family!❤
Matt on guitar is spot on!
The Petersons stepping out. Little girl all grown up and in her own air. Absolutely fantastic!
It the mid eighties, I lived not too far from that Finley River bridge. Wrote Finley River Breakdown about the river flooding. Worked a summer at Silver Dollar City. Funny, how tight a circle the world is.
Brilliant job with one of my favorite songs. Played it a lot on the porch in Ozark with my brother in law. Still play it today. Thank you!
you stand for everything that is lost. Amazing, thank you.
みんな兄弟仲良さそう。そして歌や楽器演奏が上手。いやされます。
A perfect match up song for this oh so talented voice. Just beautifully done. Hauntingly done. I just love these (kids)....
God bless all here .
By the time we got to, , ,"I'm going there to see my Savior, who shed for me, His precious blood" I was so drawn - by the instrumental arrangement - into the soul of the lyrics that it brought me to tears. Powerfully arranged!
Beautiful fiddle/violin by @Katie Petersen. Almost a melancholy sound which really helps interpret the song. Loved it!!
I love this arrangement! It grooves! Beautiful!
This is why I call this is Heaven's voice
Absolutely beautiful!
A single sneezer, very rare!
I'm only now watching these videos with a smile and a grateful heart. I am wowed by your versatility of skill in such a wide range of genres, and by the deep bench of talent across the group (which includes at least one person's impeccable ear for arrangement). I think this video is my favorite. It doesn't mean I love the others less, it just means that, for me, this one encapsulates so very well what makes you stand apart from other family ensembles.
What a voice ! Many thanks 🇫🇷
One word...Fantastic!!!
Bless you! 😊
It's amazing how a single note (Matt's guitar bend) can give a particular atmosphere to this piece ...
Congratulations on the 700K subscribers guys! That's more than 10 football stadiums full of people really enjoying your wonderful family band. Imagine that!
So good! When I was listening to the beginning, I wasn't sure about it. But then when the band joined in, it was so perfect, the hair on my arms stood up. What a great arrangement, no kidding, well done!
Wow. Super strong rendition of a classic that’s a classic for a reason.
I just love her raw, raspy voice. It's the highlight of my day when you all post a new video.
A sunray through the clouds.
Incredible. What I really like about this song is, of course not only Jules' haunting, melodic voice, but also the fact that the arrangement showcases the instrumental talents of the group - particularly Katie's violin. Well done, all!
Amazing voice . song, rendition.
I've heard (& sung) many versions of this song, but these lyrics are new (& beautiful) to me!
Julianne has a Beautiful Voice Love her gospel singing. Petersen Band is my #1 play list , Great Great Band.
it's been a while since I've watched any of their videos and have to say I am blown away with this version of Wayfaring Stranger. Very well done! Now I need to go back and watch all their other videos I've missed.
A haunting voice, perfect for this tune. Thanks, folks! 👍👍
Wow I’m so glad I found this channel. You guys are great!
It is some time now that I listen to your performances and I like them very much - the Pop-Songs like Queen and ABBA and the trad. and Christian Songs. However today I feel the first time like I want to comment on the experience I had while listening to this song. It is really extraordinary in arrangement and performance. Most I like the deepness in the vocals and the strings part with fiddle and Bass in arco.
Thank you very much in letting us being part of your musical journey.
Beautiful version of this old traditional song.
Great musicianship
AND:
An enchanting voice!!!
That ending extra was funny, and bless you.
Wow! I wasn't sure at first as I was such a huge fan of the original arrangement, but now after a few listens, I love it just as much!! And that sneeze is the cutest thing on the whole of the internet 🥰
I just don't understand how they can absolutely blow away their fans with one arrangement, then come out with a second that is totally different, but still SOOOOOO GOOOOD!!!
"A stranger Pyramus than ever played here"
(Shakespeare, MSND)
Such is this most haunting version of Wayfaring.
performing this song and performing it well is a right of passage. Well done, Petersens, well done.
Another example of how talented this lovely family is ! Real class.
This is how it,s done kids : with feeling , soul and talent .
The Petersens will always be able to improve on perfection, this arrangement is hauntingly beautiful
I absolutely LOVE this! A sweet, sparse version.
First off the arrangement of an old "warhorse" shows ingenuity! 2nd the band displayed an understanding of how to support the vocals like professionals & still show virtuosity by what they didn't play 🙏🙏🙏🤘🤘🤘👍👍👍
Absolutely a natural bluegrass/mountain voice! Beautiful, Julianne, just beautiful!
(The) Wayfaring Stranger, also known as "I Am a Poor Wayfaring Stranger" is a popular American gospel song. Its origins presumably date back to the early 19th century. The text deals with a plaintive soul who embarks on a symbolic journey to finally meet the souls of her family and Christ the Savior. The first publication of the text dates back to 1858 in a collection of hymns and popular songs edited by Joseph Bever entitled Christian Songster. Later the piece was included, in 1891, in the book The Makers of the Sacred Harp by David Warren Steel and Richard H. Hulan. According to these authors The Waifaring Stranger derives from a hymn in German of 1816 called "Ich bin ja nur ein Gast auf Erden" by Isaac Niswander. The music, in a minor key, was inserted by Charles Davis Tillman, in the same year 1891, who also added some stanzas to the original text. Over the years Waifaring Stranger has been played by numerous artists and it would take too long to name them all. But I want to indicate two interpretations that I particularly love: the first is that of Eva Cassidy who inserted the song in her album "Eva by Heart" in 1997; the second is the acoustic one by Jack White, entirely played only by mandolin, banjo and fiddle, contained in the soundtrack of the 2003 movie Cold Mountain.

IL VIANDANTE FORESTIERO
[Emmet al Dobro - chitarra resofonica]
[Julianne] Sono un povero /
viandante forestiero //
Che vaga attraverso /
questo mondo di dolore //
E non ci sono malattie, /
né fatica e né pericoli //
In quella terra luminosa /
dove sto andando //
So che nuvole cupe /
si addenseranno su di me //
So che la mia strada /
è impervia e ripida //
Ma splendidi campi /
mi si stagliano davanti //
Dove le anime redente /
proseguono le loro veglie //
Sto andando lì /
per incontrare mio padre //
Sto andando lì /
per non dover più vagare //
Devo solo attraversare /
il Giordano //
Devo solo raggiungere /
la mia casa //
Voglio portare quella /
corona di Gloria//
Quando sarò a casa /
in quella terra luminosa //
Voglio gridare /
la storia della salvezza
In concerto con /
la banda lavata nel sangue //
Sto andando lì /
per incontrare mia madre //
Lei disse che mi avrebbe /
accolto quando fossi arrivato //
Devo solo attraversare /
il Giordano //
Devo solo raggiungere /
Devo solo attraversare /
il Giordano //
Devo solo raggiungere…

[Aaron... piano... piano... applaude]
[Julz] Arrghhh.
Thanks for the background on the song, Roberto! It is always interesting to read!
@@emmajo4880 Thanks Emma! I think it's interesting to know a little more about the songs that The Petersens play.
You all play, and Julianne you sing this song so well
Vous êtes Super , Merci pour les Notes d'Harmonie que vous semez sur la Terre .
Great Family! 😍
Her crystal clear voice sends chills down my spine .. pfff
I live in the Ozarks I saw one of concerts once at Branson❤
I love that moment when Karen comes in on the bass. I think this is my new favorite Petersens song. I you haven't picked up a copy of "My Ozark Mountain Home" you're missing out on one of the best thought out, arranged, and performed collection of songs I've ever heard. It's a real work of art.
JULZ WHAT A BEAUTIFUL JOB on this song and Emmett's interesting play on the arrangement does make it different and special!
I've loved this song since I was a youngster, half a century or so ago. Beautifully done!
The idea of uttering the “his precious blood” line and ending there is genius and shows forth a reverence to our Lord. It’s the most important part of the song and of life. How fitting that the focus should be there.
“…that in all things he might have the preeminence.” (Colossians 1:18)
That rendition belongs in a movie!
