I am a million years old and I hate bloody technology. I have just realised that without it I would never of heard this amazing lady. Totally breathtaking in every way.
Her choice to stay on one chord the entire song is quite honestly on of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. It becomes such a haunting song. I absolutely love how she plays that fretless bango. She is a treasure.
I would say "welcome to the club" but you posted this a year ago. How have her beautiful songs been treating you? For me personally, she makes me cry a lot.
I am a poor wayfaring stranger Traveling through this world alone There is no sickness, toil nor danger In that fair land to which I go I'm goin' home to meet my mother I'm goin' home, no more to roam I am just goin' over Jordan I am just goin' over home I know dark clouds will gather round me I know my way is rough and steep But golden fields lie out before me Where river deep will never see I'm goin' home to meet my mother I'm goin' home, no more to roam I am just goin' over Jordan I am just goin' over home I am just goin’ over home I am just goin’ over home
Rhiannon Giddens has the one of the finest voices since Sandy Denny. She is purely wonderful. But what about the gentleman next to her in the video. It is always great to see Phil Cunningham.
I agree. Wonderful. Sandy Denny, Rhiannon Giddens and Natalie Merchant (who also recorded a beautiful version of this song) are the three female voices that move me the most.
It is on Natalie Merchant's 'House Carpenter's Daughter' folk album, released in 2003. It is on UA-cam, though several of the videos that people had uploaded appear to have been removed.
I’m going to Rhiannon’s concert next week in Edinburgh. Cant wait second time I will have seen her in person. At age 73 I’m a late fan but think she’s amazing.
The accordion player is AWESOME! Note the soulful look of grief on his weathered face as he skilfully follows his heartfelt notes. This music is gripping.
One of the best: Phil Cunningham. Look for videos under his own name as well as Highland Sessions and Transatlantic Sessions. He is appropriately subdued here, but he's a virtuoso.
It's way more than talent she carries. The Spirit of all her ancestors got together and agreed on her. She carries healing through her beauty, her voice, her skills and her knowledge. People of America, of Africa, Europe and the world don't mistake the meaning of her energy. She's here for all of us and that takes a lot of courage too.
My friend who I grew up with, Billy Constable played banjo and guitar with Doc Watson and many others. Doc Watson was our neighbor. Both went over Jordan , now. Thank you for this Rhiannon.
Ya, NC and other appalachian states have turned out some unique and awesome talents...love me some Doc as well. and Ricky Skaggs on anything with strings.
Amazing vocals, simply amazing. It's a sad situation when a voice like this only has 3k likes and some autotuned pop clone has millions. THIS is true talent.
I'm 72. been playing a long time.. began in the 60s and played all that " British envasion" stuff, moved on the pop, by the 90s was playing blues, and in the last 10 years have been working on old folk blues and that has led me to blue grass,,, and now to my Irish roots.. Love this song.. and just love Rhiannon and her treatment of this piece. Its all music and its all good.. 8 years ago I threw away all picks.. and just use fingers now.. Sometimes I think.. go to the root.. learn that and move on from there.. its has taken 60 years to come to this style of music.. and its the most touching music I have found.. play whats in your heart.. to heck if anyone else likes it.
So beautiful..I love this song..many decades ago and love it still. Rhiannon sings it from the heart.. I yearn to hear more songs sung like this...it does something for your soul... Thank you JjStevio..my friend for sharing her beautiful voice💙🌊
@@theresamay9481 Respectfully, no. I love Joan Baez and most of her music, but the renditions of this song by her that I can find are not something I enjoy.
I've been following Rhiannon Giddens music journey for 5 yrs with great delight and admiration! Her version of "Wayfaring Stranger" is delivered with so much soul! I am referring to the elemental core of all sentient beings. The part of us that feels pain, struggle, and the joy of life. Thank you Rhiannon for your gift you share with all so beautifully!! Jim Carr, Colorado
awesome, soulful, beautiful, pure and moving voice. love music, can't think of many vocalists who could match Rhiannon, this song, this setting. Shared Joan Baez "diamonds and rust" with wife Carol many years ago, now one of our personal classics among many we love. Shared this with her recently, shortly after her mom passed, it has now joined that group of songs that we treasure. Also proud to call Rhiannon a homegirl from NC. Love You Carol, if ya read this!! (or if ya dont)
The old Dude gets a tear in his eye! He's probably heard this a million times, so for her to move him that deeply, must be one of the best renditions he's ever heard. I know it's the best one I've ever heard, Keep singing Ms. Giddens, you're doing fantastic!
To us fortunate few who get to experience a performance like this, let's count our blessings. How often does a song, a voice and an instrument come together in perfect harmony. To pull at your soul, to make you feel deeply and have you leave quietly in wonder.
When you think of banjo and accordion this isn't what first comes to mind. I return to this recording with increasing frequency. Such amazing musicianship delivering such immense comfort and serenity.
I didn't know this singer, I love! Her voice has an incredible commun point with that of Joan Baez (may she rest in peace), and her folk music also. Very beautiful voice. I'll follow the evolution of its repertoire (time is always running, but mostly not too fast if you please). I was born lulled by the voice of Joan, she left us for other horizons, but she will always be in my heart
I have heard many renditions of this song but i think this one tops them all........it literally brings tears to my eyes. I think this is what I will play at my funeral.
Well said. The great thing about Rhiannon Giddens is that she cuts across several musical genres, and her voice is so good that all are worth listening to. All popular music shares common roots anyway (eg. delta blues/rock/folk), and hopefully, the music of Rhiannon Giddens is helping to break down barriers.
Beautiful song. Beautiful voice. Beautiful woman. I have just recently become aware of Rhiannon Giddens. I have been showing her UA-cam videos to everyone in my family. Look for her performance at the Obama White House concert. She can sing anything in any style. Also plays the fiddle wonderfully.

that ugly thing - we use to call it 'dialectics' ...
Just the voice and a very simple accompaniment. So beautiful!
Me too, John. Me too.

Her choice to stay on one chord the entire song is quite honestly on of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. It becomes such a haunting song. I absolutely love how she plays that fretless bango. She is a treasure.
Listen to Rhiannon play her original song “Julie”. Truly haunting
I had to listen again to realize this. An amazing touch on the song and a nice pick up by you.
The accordion is playing the harmony for her.
less, is more
Yes. One fret songs also go way back to the original blues.
A tin can with just cat gut strings didnt stop the most beautiful, moving sound. 👍
This is stunning. I can't believe I've only just discovered this woman
same - she's so incredible!
It was random for me but yeah.....I was blown away.
Both her albums, Tomorrow Is My Turn and Freedom Highway, are worth owning. We need to support artists like her, artists with integrity.
Very well said!
Same hear. Incredible!
I from the North GA hills and this the best version of this I've EVER heard. This Gal looks and sings like an Angel.
This will be played at my funeral....
My son passed away 1year and 7 months ago you make me smile again. With a thousand smiles. Old man
73 year old man here. I too lost a son. He was 18. Amen brother.
Ken, on the hudson river
Your voice floors me, buries me, excavates me from a dense loam, and leaves me uprooted in the sun
Man, you do it justice with your words.
I’ve just discovered Rhiannon & am enchanted. A wonderful rendition of a beautiful song. 🇨🇦

I know dark clouds will gather round me
I know my way is rough and steep
But golden fields lie out before me

I have heard a hundred versions of this song over the years, but this one has tears running down my face. Beautiful.
Check out Jo Stafford's version
I can sing it with Johnny Cash and others. But with this version, my throat is closed and tears are coming! Rhiannon got the soul for this song! ❤
The best version ever of this great song. Rhiannon and Phil, great duetting.

TheAngelrays a question I find myself asking quite often.
PROBABly because she is real. No fake makeup or dressing. She is from the heart, the soul.

Lovely, simple, and direct performances by Rhiannon and Phil Cunningham, vocally and instrumentally, on a much beloved song! Bravo!
Mesmerizing beauty and the voice of an angel
That Song is 300+ years old, that was Beautiful, and gives me Goosebumps.
This is my first time hearing this. It is a Beautiful song, beautifully sung. A very unique rendition.
That was beautiful and made me think of my mom...bless you
Ms. Gibbons has the gift of soothing others with her angelic voice. ✨️
I've come to deep waters. Rhiannon is deep, dark, and blue, and what a gift.
Me too brother. Dark, deep waters.
Just beautiful. Rhiannon is one of my favorite modern artists. Love the Carolina Chocolate Drops.

TJ Norton So do I! Heard them on NPR one day and I was hooked!
My mother wanted this played at her funeral and I had it played. There was not a dry eye during the entire service. I still sob when I hear this.
I cried when I read this. I hope your mother rests in peace.
It is a song for the strong but lonely soul.
Easy ways for your mom...
Made me tear-up just listening...
Johnny Cash does an amazing version of this song also.
A voice like lightning in the dark, or sunshine piercing through on a cloudy day. God. What beauty.
Still impressive in 2024.
Reduced to the essence.

Good news is that this has 2.2mm now in Aug 2020! May even more people find her....
I know, I feel like singing on key should be a requirement. If you need autotune, go find something else to do for a living.
You can pay someone a compliment without insulting or belittling others

WOW! Where it was all my life. Beautiful and breathtaking.
This is brilliant and it takes me on a journey to my Appalachian roots. Goosebumps!
Listened again on Mother's Day. So lovely and bittersweet. Blessings to all of you waiting to see your Mothers. Thank You Lord for Jordan...

Thanks to 1917 I discovered this absolutely amazing singer. I got 3 albums, just driving around town listening to her completely mesmerised. ❤️
christ, this is one of the most beautiful things i've ever seen.
What a pure, sweet voice!!!
Ken Burn's "Country" documentary interviewed Giddens often but failed to include her music. I'm glad to see it posted here.
Purposeful; the timeline covered in the doc ends with Johnny Cash's death (1996?). Her interviews are relevant to the roots of country.
He didn’t feature any artists past the millennium it appears. The last show had pictures of newer artists but the cut off seems to be ‘99-‘00...

This subtle, mournful version and Hayde's more 'alive', spitefully sad version and the unknown original make a holy trinity.
