If you leave your just-washed skin unmoisturized for 30 minutes, your skin will lose hydration. That’s not what you want, especially while using a retinoid like tretinoin which can cause excessive dryness. Instead, go through your skincare routine as usual. After you apply a moisturizer to seal in hydration, apply the retinoid over it. @@enacheadriana654 Unless you're one of the (probably rare) people who truly don't need to use a moisturizer of some kind, it's a bad idea to let your freshly washed skin sit for 30 minutes without moisturizing it to prevent water loss. Thank you so much Dr Lim for this concise and thorough video ❤️ I was looking for this piece of information for quite a bit a finally I have all the answers I needed
It’s understood that acids might make it more prone to irritation if you have sensitive skin but it’s not exactly ‘bad’ for your skin. I read that not mixing acids with retinol came from a study that has now been disproven and using both in moderation especially with a good moisturizer is fine. I wonder what anyone’s experiences have been…
It all depends on your skin's tolerance level of whichever ingredients (acids or anything else) you want to use. My skin won't tolerate tretinoin (not yet, anyway) but does well with retinaldehyde, and I can layer it 1-3 times a week with a leave-on 10% AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) exfoliant. I can also use vitamin C (ascorbic acid) with it. Some people's skin won't tolerate vitamin C even without vitamin A (using this label to cover retinoic acid and all its derivatives like retinol) involved, so those people obviously shouldn't try layering vitamin C and vitamin A. Some people's skin is sensitive to glycolic acid at any strength but will tolerate mandelic acid, a gentler AHA; they might be able to use mandelic acid alongside vitamin A. If in doubt, the safest route, besides asking your own doctor, is to alternate days or time of day: use vitamin A at night and other active ingredients in the morning, or use vitamin A on a completely different day than other actives.
Hi doctor, you forgot an important thing and that is, for those who apply retinol to the face, it is advisable to apply it at night and it is mandatory to apply sunscreen from the sun in the morning after, because the combination of the sun with the retinol creates pigmentation in the face. Also, for those who use retinol to avoid removing hair from the face with wax. Much love from Israel❤️
I think that might be a misunderstanding. I believe the problem with retinol with sun is that it gets deactivated, not that it increases photosensitivity.
@@crisfer22 I know of someone who at the time she recently began using tretinoin, used it during the day and the sun hit hard. Towards evening she began noticing black patches on her face and by night it increased and spread all over. She looked like burnt bread. She reported to the derm and that was he mentioned forgetting to inform about the night usage only. To the point, it reacts with sunlight ie increased photosensitivity.
thank you for this very direct, simple, and practical advice for skin care. I have been using them for quite some time my retinol from Korea and Niacinamide- it works great on my skin, especially on the face. My face is always hydrated and soft. Thank you Dr Lim
Thank you, especially for the information on what to use with retinol and what not to use with it. I have a bottle of The Ordinary .05% and a bottle of 1%. I was reluctant to start retinol but now I will proceed.
It’s interesting how dermatologist have different opinions on how to use Retinol, especially about pairing it with your vitamin C, I was using prescription strength Tretinoin at .05% for awhile and saw absolutely no results, then I went up to .01% and still didn’t see any results, I had absolutely no irritation from it whatsoever, then I switched my skincare products to Osmosis which uses Retinaldehyde and finally after using this brand of skincare my skin has never looked so good and I follow up with Truth Treatments C balm, as my last step in my night time routine, I use Truth Treatment trio system in my morning skincare routine followed by my sunscreen SPF 50+, everything I use works well under my makeup when I wear it, medical grade skincare products are the only ones that actually work for my @62 years young skin, along with my twice a year Botox, everything works together. Cheers from Queensland Australia 🇦🇺
I think the different opinions are because there’s no inherent issue with combining retinoids and vitamin C, just that both can be irritating, so using them at the same time would be double irritating. The amount of vitamin C in most creams is pretty low, so it shouldn’t cause irritation, but high concentrations in a vitamin C serum can be irritating. So it depends on your skin if you can use certain products together or not.
@@JasminMiettunenI might be asking too late but I've recently been using the CeraVe retinol serum at night and it's been doing good for my skin But now I wanna use an exfoliant, and usually exfoliants contain the mandelic, glycolic, lactic acids etc. Should I just get the exfoliant (particularly with mandelic acid) and use every 2 weeks in the morning and then continue with the serum at night?
Dr Lim you didn't mention hyaluronic acid as a companion to retinol. I've read this was a good to use it a little afterwards as it acts as a calming agent. Is this correct? Thank you and many blessings🙏
Retin A was first prescribed for me in 1977 for cystic acne. It was the new thing and it was brutal on my face and I hated it because I got no instruction from my doctor on how it works. I’d be burning my skin off and be bright red. So I quit it until someone suggested a book called Clear Skin by Dr Kennth Flandermeyer I believe. Well, when I discovered how the zit you wear on your face today may have started 6 months ago and how acne is a 24/7 affair, and that if I’d just keep up with the Retin A I could achieve clear, and through minor application I could stay clear skin, I started it again. I stayed in the house for 8 weeks one summer (no fun) turned bright red and just could not let myself be seen. Then after 8 weeks of staring at my bright red face in the mirror, I noticed something. Yes, I was bright red, but there wasn’t a zit in sight. Not even one of those sore lumps I call underground volcanoes…the cystic kind of infected zits that used to plague me. Now I’m 65 years old, I’ve continued with Retin A for years but just once or twice a week, no redness, and now I use Tazarotene in place of RetinA. And guess what? I have the best skin! No one can believe I’m 65. What a blessing Retinoids have turned out to be for me. Since I started developing Psoriasis on my arms and legs I am using Tazarotene on them too and it has really helped.
Ha, you beat me! I started using it when I was 19 (yes, looked llike a red, peeling tomato for ages) but it solved my acne issues and I ended up with perfect skin with no scarring. Now I'm 46 and - yep - no wrinkles either.
I do, though I don't use my regular tretinoin or retinol (I use a 1% retinol on a certain part of my neck that I've never been able to get to tolerate tretinoin). Firstly, migration occurs, so if you're using tretinoin or a higher-strength retinol already on your face some of that naturally migrates - example, I don't put it directly under my eyes, too close to the corner of my eye (stings! Gets irritated) or below the eyebrow but I've still got rid of my crows feet and some definite reduction in my upper hood of my eye/eyebrow region just from that. Recently I incorporated a special eyecream. Normally I don't use eyecreams if I want actives I titrate a tiny bit of the active into my regular moisturiser to "water it down" a little since the eye area is sensitive, but for convenience I use Paula's Choice Clinical Ceramide-Enriched Firming Eyecream (Purple bottle). It's expensive and the retinol strength is quite low (0.01%) but I've noticed a bit of improvement on a line under my left eye. I use that on my eyelid too. Not having any issues. One day I might attempt to up the dosage by doing as I already mentioned (add the tiniest little bit of my 1% retinol to moisturiser to boost it up).
Yes, it all depends on how much your skin can tolerate. My skin tolerates prescription tretinoin very well, and I apply it on my neck every night, and also a *tiny* amount around my eyes three nights per week. I always follow up with a thick eye cream, to mitigate any irritation. You can definitely try it out, perhaps once a week to start; just go slowly and work your way up, as Dr Lim suggests. Hope that helps!
There are OTC retinoid eye products, which a number of derms recommend over prescription or OTC products for the face. Avene has a retinal eye cream. Beauty of Joseon has a retinal eye cream and then again, OTC brands would have retinoid eye products (e.g., here in the U.S., Neutrogena has one).
@@kendallstark4302 I tried it yesterday and I haven't noticed it any redness or irritation so, I hope my skin tolerates it well. I really hate some deep wrinkles under my eyes and I feel that regular eye creams don't help me with that
Hey Guys, You can in fact used Retinol with Vitamin C during the night. Here is how you do it. Cleanse your face and let it dry then apply vitamin C, wait for at least 30 mins for your skin ph to come back to normal (since Vit. C has lower ph than retinol) then apply retinol. Wait 5 to 10 min then apply moisturizer with niacinamide. Now if you have sensitive skin, I would only use one of the two product until you skin get used to it.
Thank you ✨ Can retinol help with hollow acne scars? I have some small ones around the chin area and would like to get rid of them. Also - after what time should we proceed with frequency and bigger %?
Can I alternate between a retinoid serum and a skin renewal product that contains a highly effective combination of peeling agents - Glycolic, Salicylic and Polyhydroxy - acid. One night I should use one, the other night the other. And during the day I should use a serum with niacenamide and zinc?
Dr. I am using 1st The ordinary Retinol after that my second application is The Ordinary Resveratrol 3% Feluric 3 % My evening routine Am I doing right how I apply the retinol and resveratrol?
What cleanser can I use before applying Retinol? I have a vitamine C cleanser and an AHA/BHA cleanser, but based on this video, both are a bad idea. What would you recommend? I have acne prone, but sensitive skin.
It's best to stick with cleansers that are mild or made from all natural ingredients as Retinol may already be too strong for the skin. You can try using our All Clear Mint Cleanser just in case.
I've been using both Retinol and Retin A products for years. All the while, my face has continued to age, get more facial lines, get more age spots, and age just as it would if I were using nothing on it at all. (Note: I do use sunscreen on my face every day). Retin A and retinol products have done absolutely nothing to help my skin with anti-aging, sun damage, wrinkles, etc. I guess I'm one of the unlucky ones, whose face is going to age no matter what I do. :(
So you also need to pay attention to what you eat.. do you eat a lot of carbs? Sweets? Junk food? If you use a lot of products on your face but dont pay attention to what goes inside your body then you’ll age no matter what
Have you had your gut microbiome checked? What’s your diet been like throughout your life? Cause an unbalanced gut microbiome and some gut bacteria can cause premature ageing. I’m working on mine by taking BiomeSight microbiome tests and sending my results to my account on a website called Microbiome Prescription, where it gives you recommendations on what you should take and avoid to improve it based on your specific microbiome.

Towards evening she began noticing black patches on her face and by night it increased and spread all over. She looked like burnt bread. She reported to the derm and that was he mentioned forgetting to inform about the night usage only.
To the point, it reacts with sunlight ie increased photosensitivity.

Professional, informative, assertive and thorough! Thank you so much for this high quality video. It has helped a lot!
The most helpful video so far for first time user of Retinol. Thank you so much 💕💕
i loved this because if was short, concise and super informative
Thanks for this video. Simple, rapid and useful, with lots of important info.
Have seen this advice 2 yrs ago in TikTok. I tried the cheap Cerave and I’m glad I am ok with it!
thank you for this very direct, simple, and practical advice for skin care. I have been using them for quite some time my retinol from Korea and Niacinamide- it works great on my skin, especially on the face. My face is always hydrated and soft. Thank you Dr Lim
Subscribed !! You're very thorough ! Easy to understand
Also always use sun screen when you are using retinol otherwise you will burn and damage your skin
Agree!
NOT ALL CHEAP PRODUCTS ARE BAD, NOT ALL EXPENSIVE PRODUCTS ARE GOOD!!!!!!!!
Thank you, especially for the information on what to use with retinol and what not to use with it. I have a bottle of The Ordinary .05% and a bottle of 1%. I was reluctant to start retinol but now I will proceed.
Retinol is my favorite component in cosmetics. I combine retinol with niacinamide as I have oily skin
@@JasminMiettunenI might be asking too late but I've recently been using the CeraVe retinol serum at night and it's been doing good for my skin
But now I wanna use an exfoliant, and usually exfoliants contain the mandelic, glycolic, lactic acids etc.
Should I just get the exfoliant (particularly with mandelic acid) and use every 2 weeks in the morning and then continue with the serum at night?
@@keychains5806 that should be fine, you can also skip the retinol one night and use the exfoliant instead if using both in one day causes irritation
@@keychains5806 how about if you are using rejuvenating it this advisable to use also retinol or not can you answer please thanks
Dr Lim you didn't mention hyaluronic acid as a companion to retinol. I've read this was a good to use it a little afterwards as it acts as a calming agent. Is this correct? Thank you and many blessings🙏
That's useful to a person who are using retinol for the first time
I LOVE the murad retinol products. They are sooo good for my super dry, sensitive skin
Hello sir Davin. I would like to thank you for showing me the DermaRollers. My face definitely improved since then.
Thank you for the video ❤❤❤❤ what a knowledgeable Dr.
Really appreciate the context and the simple way it is presented. Thank you.
Can you say why you prefer taz over tret? I’m interested in the difference , my derm offered Taz instead if I wanted it.
Ha, you beat me! I started using it when I was 19 (yes, looked llike a red, peeling tomato for ages) but it solved my acne issues and I ended up with perfect skin with no scarring. Now I'm 46 and - yep - no wrinkles either.
Well you, darling are pure science and research. We need more testimonies from people like you, not 6 months or 2 years trial. 🤗
I started using Olay retinol24 cleanser and moisturizer. I feel like my skin has really been improved.

Great information! What are your thoughts in taking glutathione supplements for glowing skin and overall health?
Great video. Can I use this under the eyes or what's the best treatment for the wrinkles right under my eyes?
@@db-gb5xi Thank you, I don't know why I never thought of using any of those products. I was afraid to apply pure retinol to the area
Thank you for sharing this information, Dr Davin! ❤
Thank you ✨
Can retinol help with hollow acne scars? I have some small ones around the chin area and would like to get rid of them.
Also - after what time should we proceed with frequency and bigger %?
Let me know if get an answer
Yes it does not completely but somewhat
My daughter just bought some for me today. Very informative. Thank you!
Brilliant explanation, clear and concise. thank you !!❤
Can you make a video about retinol and the eye area? I've heard it's bad to use around the eyes. What can we use instead?
I am using retinol 0.5% of ordinary at night, can we use hyaluronic acid with it
Is this retinol can be used for acne scars which has been ruined by strong skin peeling while Microdermabrasion treatment
No one mentioned these combos and do and don’t so clearly 🙏🏻👌👌👌
That was very straight to the point and helpful thank you!
Can I alternate between a retinoid serum and a skin renewal product that contains a highly effective combination of peeling agents - Glycolic, Salicylic and Polyhydroxy - acid. One night I should use one, the other night the other. And during the day I should use a serum with niacenamide and zinc?
Dr Lim. It is safe or ok to use Alpha Arbutin 2%+HA? I m using retinnoin .025% daily with Alpha Arbutin and Niacinamide. Thank you.
Very informative, precise and straight to the point ! Thanks
How would you rate using prescription adapalene vs something like tretinoin? Will Adapalene be as effective?
Okay can see you’ve done a video on retinoids vs retinol. But still unsure 😂
The best advice from the best dermatologist doctor!!!!!!
Dr. I am using 1st The ordinary Retinol after that my second application is The Ordinary Resveratrol 3% Feluric 3 %
My evening routine Am I doing right how I apply the retinol and resveratrol?
What cleanser can I use before applying Retinol? I have a vitamine C cleanser and an AHA/BHA cleanser, but based on this video, both are a bad idea. What would you recommend? I have acne prone, but sensitive skin.
We usually recommend going with cleansers that are mild or those that are made from all natural ingredients.
Use simple
Great video. Everything in simple words. Thanks
Which Retinol do you suggest? What can be used around the eyes as retinol around the eyes are not recommend
You are my favorite Dermatologist
What face wash is recommended when you use Retinol?
It's best to stick with cleansers that are mild or made from all natural ingredients as Retinol may already be too strong for the skin. You can try using our All Clear Mint Cleanser just in case.
rule N1: apply only on dry skin, never apply on wet!
And no around eyes!
Thank you Dr. Davin! Great video and easy fro understand or beginners.
Thank you for the information! Do you have preferences when it comes to prescription retinol?
Tretinoin
I've been using both Retinol and Retin A products for years. All the while, my face has continued to age, get more facial lines, get more age spots, and age just as it would if I were using nothing on it at all. (Note: I do use sunscreen on my face every day). Retin A and retinol products have done absolutely nothing to help my skin with anti-aging, sun damage, wrinkles, etc. I guess I'm one of the unlucky ones, whose face is going to age no matter what I do. :(
So you also need to pay attention to what you eat.. do you eat a lot of carbs? Sweets? Junk food? If you use a lot of products on your face but dont pay attention to what goes inside your body then you’ll age no matter what
i bet you will look lovely no matter what!!
Have you had your gut microbiome checked? What’s your diet been like throughout your life? Cause an unbalanced gut microbiome and some gut bacteria can cause premature ageing.
I’m working on mine by taking BiomeSight microbiome tests and sending my results to my account on a website called Microbiome Prescription, where it gives you recommendations on what you should take and avoid to improve it based on your specific microbiome.
maybe your skin is dehydrated, also diet can be a huge factor in your skin health. do you have a derm to consult with?
See a dermatologist
Thank you, doctor! You are the best! Dana from Bucharest Roumania
Thank you so much!!! Question: moysturizer should be use before and/or after retinol? And can in it be the next minute, or do we have to wait 1 hour too? THANK YOU SO MUCH
you should use moisturizer after applying retinol and it can be in the next minute, i usually wait around 5-10 mins for the serum to be absorbed and then apply moisturizer cream
My dermatologist prescibed me Epiduo, which combines benzoyl peroxide and adapalene. So is in this product not a problem to combine these two ingredients? She said to use a pea size amount, 3x per week at night.
Hello doctor! Can I use Alpha arbutin before I use Retinol. Also I use Differin cleanser. With 5% BPO. Is that a bad combination with retinol and alpha arbutin? Please help, my acne around my chin area is my biggest problem 😢😢😢
You made this easy to understand. Thank you!

Hi ! There
I have a serious Question for all of u that What Do I use during the nights when I'm not using my retinol ....I m a beginner & I'm using La Roche Posay Hydrating Gentle Cleanser + Kiehl's Retinol Micro dose Serum + Cerave Moisturizer In Night.
In Morning I use Cleanser + Paula's Choice Vitamic C + Isntree hyaluronic Acid water gel sunscreen.
Thank you so much for this video ! I learned so much ..
I am struggling from pigmentation on my skin. That's why I incorporated glycolic acid in my skincare routine. Is it okay, if I use both these ingredients on my skin (glycolic acid and retinol) but at different times of the day or week?
Thanks a lot for the video❤❤❤ perfectly explained
Dr Lin , thank you for this video , I have been using retinoids for 10 years now ( I am 55) , started with retinol cream Skinceuticals but always had irritations , for the last 3 years I have been using Medik8 Crystal Retinal where I have reached retinal 10 by now and no irritations at all , I even use in summer ( always spf of course ) . I highly recommend Medik8 , I do not understand why in Australia or Usa you people do not rate Medik8 , thank you 🥰
I started with medik8 crystal retinal but have since found retinal on the same %’s or close for a lesser price without the slight fragrance
I have started using Medik8 am in India .
SkinCeuticals use pure retinol which actually strong and works. Medic8 Not so much ..
medik8 is amazing i’m on crystal no 10 and find it great
@@vikik4313 retinAl like in the Medik8 is actually a stronger form of retinoid than retinOl.
But why not Benzoyl Peroxide? I used Epiduo gel which is adapalene and benzoyl peroxide. It worked wonders on my skin,my acne cleared but after 1yr it started to irritate my skin a lot. I'm really curious what you think about epiduo gel.
Dr Lim can I use retinol with hyaluronic acid?
3:19 ....and I have been using 6-7 drops of Retinol serum for over 2 months everyday, yikes lol. So far nothing bad happened but my skin has absolutely got better though. I should read the instructions more lol.
Dr. Davin, can I switch between Retinol and Retinoid from time to time?
How to yse retinol , vitamin C and glycolic toner in the same routine? And it ia the first time to ise retinol and glycolic
Which brand retinol is good for beginners????
Can i use vitamine C in the morning routine then? Or should I avoid all actives when I use retinol?
Yes, you may use Vitamin C in the morning. Just make sure to apply sunscreen afterwards for skin protection.
I used retinol and glycolic acid same day I apply glycolic acid first which is 5% then wait 25 minutes to apply retinol
