"Whenever it's painful, it's not good". Absolutely love it. In French there's this sentence "tu dois souffrir pour être belle" (=you must suffer to be beautiful) that i have always hated
My favourite part about you is that you don't just say "Top 7 things not to do!!!", but you also provide safer and better alternatives. I see a lot of videos and websites just tell you NOT to do, but never giving tips on what you SHOULD do instead.
I used St. Ives exfoliating wash in the early 2000's until I got one of pieces of exfoliate stuck in my eye. That was the most painful and expensive lesson that I've learned.
Once when I was in my twenties, I tried using the St. Ives skin lotion and WOW!! I had to make a dash to the bathroom cause within seconds, my leg turned red and was burning!! Never again! Will never use the St. Ives ANYTHING!!!
I didn’t get it in my eye, but it hurt my skin more than enough for me to stop. I think I used the rest of it on my feet (calluses). Definitely works for that!
Physical exfoliating scrub -> Chemical exfoliate once to twice a week. Vibrating cleansing brush -> regular cleanser 30 seconds to 1 minute. Micellar water/face wipes -> regular cleanser Pore stripes -> retinol or salicylic acid Peel off masks -> chemical exfoliant or toner or vitamin a or retinol Face messaging tools -> surgical face lift Body exfoliating gloves -> salicylic acid cream
I needed pore strips because even if I would wash my face there would still be a lot of dirt and excess oil. I rarely used it. It was either that or my mom forcefully taking the white stuff of my nose… and that wasn’t going to happen
@@janiyahl.9456 I still needed them at 20. Got a silicone cleansing brush and it really helps! Only use it for 1 minute (not everyday) use whatever (healthy) methods that work for your skin!
As someone in my 40's and who has worked with plastic surgeons for most of my career, I think there's something important to remember. What works for one person doesn't necessarily jive with the next. Personally, a blend of acid and physical exfoliation keeps my face and body skin bright, clear and happy. My skin is oil rich, and likes to stick around. 🤷♀️ Retinol turns my skin to pure fire in any strength. The next person might need something quite different. Derms tend to be fairly adamant, almost militant in their recommendations. You know your skin. Be gentle, use high quality tested products from trusted sources.. and TRY THINGS. Above all, good skin starts from the inside out. Drink your water..cut the processed crap food and add more fresh produce..sleep..move your body..wash your face at night..cut out the booze and salt if you can. You'll be amazed at what happens to your skin.
I love how you not only addressed the issues but also gave back-up solutions, I didn't know most of this information so thanks so much for the heads up!
I always got ingrown hair after bikini wax and I was following the esthetician's advice to use physical exfoliation. I was fed up and deciding to try chemical exfoliation (glycolic acid 7%) and it was a game changer! never ever had problem since.
Knowing that I don't use any of these products/methods in my skin care routine is such a relief. I also don't recommend the physical scrubs because it can also cause breakouts and irritations.
I'm an aesthetician myself and I love this advice. Never used pore strips , micellar wipes or yucky charcoal masks I advocate using a cosmeceutical range using Glycolic or salicylic acids products and maybe a retinol Serum at night time.
I have a charcoal mask fortunately I don’t have to peel it off. It rinses off after letting it sit for 5 minutes. Are chemical exfoliators good for sensitive skin?
This was VERY informational. Before starting RetinA, I used to do pore strips on my nose once every week. But I noticed my pores clogged again after a week and it never really showed signs of shrinking. Even with regular cleansing. I had bad breakouts as well. I finally asked my doctor if I could start RetinA. She agreed and I’ve been on topical RetinA for only a month now but Man, what a difference. I haven’t used pore strips for a month now and I noticed the pores on my nose have shrunk considerably. RetinA is a true skincare game changer for breakouts. Thank you for this video, it really helped me understand more of the other things I shouldn’t be using.
“Whenever it’s painful it’s not good. “ Too much of anything stinks. Best spa care I ever received was at the Korean spa where the ladies scrubbed my body with an exfoliating cloth. Wow. That was great. I made friends with steam also. My face I treat like a baby. And Vaseline is still wonderful to hold moisture after you wash your face at night. Wash it off in the morning and apply your moisturizer. Rose hip oil is nice in winter and Aloe vera great in summer. Find what works, try new organic things. Best to nurture from within with plenty water, fruit and veggies and fatty acids. Drink tea! I’m lazy but I like the jade Gua thing, too. Feels good. One last thing: keep lots of clean white washcloths for gentle scrub to the face and neck in the shower to remove all grime. You can see it! Sounds like much but develop your routine and listen to your skin. Haven’t had a pimple or a dry patch for donkeys years. 👏🏾
Sounds good apart for the Vaseline bit. It is is made from petrol chemicals and I do my best to avoid anything with petroleum on my skin unless it's a infection that I need to keep moisture out of with antibiotic ointment, but i always try natural ointments or salves first.
@@blueraypriestess823 I’m aware of that but it’s non absorbent which is the point and out of exposure to uv light harmless. Unlike coconut oil or Shea or any of the other oils that harden at room temperature! It’s a low cost humectant. When resources permit I use the light oils I mentioned but mostly my skin craves water. There’s a reason Vaseline works for wound care. And it kept my Granny , a kind gardening lady who grew and ate her own vegetables and lived until her 80s in flawless complexion. As I said not a pimple, a rash, a wrinkle or discoloration since my teens and even then rarely. Perhaps me and my Granny have skin that is different than yours! Carry on.
Vaseline is good only for ppl with dry skin. It will couse breack out with any other person that have acne or oily skin since it will block your pours`
@@jeanettesdaughter you lucky with your skin hehe. My grandma did not used anything and had a good skin and looked younger 20 years when she was 80 also had black hair till death. I hope I got her skin - but I defenetly did not got her hair... Got white hair since 30 like mom and grandfather may he rest with peace
I did some of the skincare mistakes before and realised that my skin turned red, peeled, too dry, burning sensation etc. Starting last year I start using egg white to remove my whiteheads once a month. I also use clay mask to remove dirt from my face like every 2 weeks. I think clay mask is better than peel off mask because clearly u do not need to peel it. Just wash it off with warm water. My skin has never been better.
I remember a customer came in to my store (I was a beauty advisor) she bought the green scrub sponges ( the ones that are used on pots and pans)for using on her face. She didn’t have any lines on her forehead but it looked like You could actually see her skull through very thin skin. I wonder what that looks like now because it has been almost 5 years.
@@carolvanaria600 Oh man! Yes, the things you hear people do to their faces is enough to make your hair stand on end as well as the misuse of products- one customer was actually drinking a spoon of 'revitalizing tonic' toner (it had a french label) and complained it gave her diarrhea. Beauty advisors can tell lots of stories!
Personally, I've had back and chest acne for about 15 years. Not using any sort of washcloth when I shower makes the acne worse. It's a microfiber cloth, and I don't go overboard with it, just enough to get rid of the dead skin and excess oil. I think the takeaway is be super careful with your face and neck, and gentle with the rest of your skin.
@@orphanl I've been using silicone free products for quite a while actually 😅 my acne is more of a chronic internal issue, there's little I can do at this point besides medication.
god i used to have back acne when i was younger 😔 but it's all gone once i change my soap and shampoo to baby products. it's totally annoying to have acnes wherever body part they choose to live in.
I have oily skin and I avoid as much as possible following influencers who encourage the consumption of cosmetic products. They make you spend money on unnecessary items for a skincare routine.
I'm finding in my old age (I'm 55) that the simpler the better, a good old washcloth, a homemade lavender essential oil spray and avocado oil that's it.
Yes. You're right. Now I found my best skincare ever since I stop buying influencers' recommendations. The result is not as fast as others but it's okay to be slowly but surely.
Completely agree ,i have also spend alot of money in these products to get rid from my oily amd acne prone skin but at the end i have found nothing revolutionary in these kind of expensive skincare .these all are useless
I find just using what ever a professional dermatologist tells you to use is so much better. The prescriptions might be expensive, but at least they actually work.
I used an ultrasonic brush ONCE. It literally brushed off my first layer of skin, and it was so damn painful, I used medicine on my skin for better healing. The worst part: the next day I was flying to a sunny vacation and the salt water hurt even more (but it also kind of helped a lot with healing). I needed to wear extra layers of sunscreen and didn't have as much fun as I should've. I threw that brush out imminently.
Hi there! Thanks for talking on the behalf of many skincare experts! I work for a huge cosmetic retail line which focuses on makeup and skincare as the majority and I can’t tell you enough how frustrating it is to learn that my clients are practicing skincare in invasive ways just because they get the wrong education. Too much junk is on the internet nowadays so I’m always grateful for content like this I consider to be GOLD! THANK YOU! I am a skincare expert btw (as part of the nature of my job) but only on the over-the-counter product level and not a professional like you but I aspire to go to a professional level in future! While it feels awesome to educate others, it is mentally draining hearing the same issues pop-up at the same time! But oh well, these kinds of things can’t really be prevented anyway!
When I was a teenager, I used a sandy, grainy scrub to try to clear my acne. I scrubbed my face so vigorously that I still have tiny scrub line scars on my forehead! They never went away, although my acne finally did. They shouldn't sell these abrasives in the stores, they can really damage your facial skin for life. This was long before people knew about chemical exfoliators. Thank goodness there are much better ways to exfoliate now.
@@user-kpkxgtj I agree that they can work great for areas with especially rough skin, such as the feet and elbows, but the point is that these harsh scrubs are being advertised as being safe for more sensitive areas, such as the face, even though they are exactly the opposite.
@@peggedyourdad9560 not really. It is really on the user. A lot of facial scrubs can be done like once a week? But I know women who brag that they exfoliate everyday. And you can't change their minds if they have good skin to prove.
@@yivunqp963 You’re right that some can be be ok to use once a week, but those are sugar scrubs which are slightly better since sugar dissolves with water so you can’t sandpaper your skin indefinitely. Those people that brag they use harsh scrubs every day and say they still have nice skin generally either won’t have nice skin for very long (lol) or are very lucky that they won the skin genetic lottery. The reason it’s encouraged to use chemical exfoliants for their Face ID because it’s not actually known when the benefits of physical exfoliants end and their harmfulness begins because you’re essentially scratching the surface of the skin and hoping all that’s being scraped-off is dirt/dead skin and not the healthy skin underneath.
All useful advice, and as an older person can I just add that it's not a crime to get older. Look after your skin, but accept those signs of ageing, and be happy. Be happy and confident.
This was genuinely very helpful and not clickbait. Thank you so much for sharing this information with us and helping counter misinformation out there!
I've been using everything you've mention in this video and I'm horrified. I couldn't figure out why I kept breaking out and why my skin is starting to scar now 😖 thank you very much for saving my skin. I will definitely change my skin care routine.
As a person having sensitive skin, I’ve tried them all and always have breakout. Until I started using korean products! Snail mucin helped me alot since they act as a skin barrier. I was surprised as when i change routine i always get breakout but not on them. Worth a try!
@Jane2cool4Uugar scrubs are also physical exfoliators, so yes they can be very rough on the face. I’d recommend using a bentonite clay mask if you want something natural. Using a sugar scrub for the body every now and then should be okay though :)
I don't like rough exfoliators, but I love microdermabrasion scrubs once or twice a week. I've used them forever and they make a HUGE difference in my skin's brightness and clarity. I cleanse with DHC olive oil cleanser and their mild soap, this routine makes my skin look amazing and I'm almost 50!
I had a dermatologist sell me a clarisonic brush when I was a teenager and she told me to use it every single night along with cleanse my skin with a glycolic acid rinse and use medicated spot treatments. Safe to say my skin was redder than ever and irritated as hell. Oh and this same dermatologist blamed me for my face being red because I apparently wasn’t cleansing enough.
I used to use physical exfoliators and my skin was gorgeous. I switched to “chemical exfoliators” because a licensed “professional” advised me it would be much better then physicall exfoliators but the chemical exfoliators ruined my skin barrier completely and im still struggling to get it back to normal.
Licensed esthetician here! I’m so sorry you’re experiencing that. I find that without proper guidance or experience that chemical exfoliation can cause more bad than good. That being said your first time being introduced to chemical exfoliation in the treatment room, not on your own. Some skin types are better with physical exfoliation! Just don’t go too long or hard and use one that has round beads (HES referrinf to specifically to St. Ives without saying their name)
Dermalogica has a very gentle physical exfoliator. It takes 8 hours for the skin barrier (acid mantle) to repair itself. Only exfoliate in the evenings, so skin will be repairing while you sleep.
Lol they told you to switch to chemical exfoliator to have better skin but that’s all marketing bullshits. Believe me, I tried all the expensive stuffs like BHA, AHA and Retinol but they didn’t help any of my problems and instead made them worse. Also I know many cases like you who trusted in the so-called “Lagendary Skincare Ingredient” myths and got their skin completely ruined. Even me after 7 years of researching, I decided to go back to my good ol’scrub, exfoliating gloves and plain moisturizer. My skin looks so much better. No purging, no redness/iritation and less dark spots. Even better with a smooth and subtle glow.
I was at a skin care salon where they do all kinds of treatments but i was there to ask about Botox. The woman said I needed exfoliating on my skin and sold me an extremely expensive physical exfoliator to use twice a week. It was like rubbing sand on my face. After the first couple of times, I stopped using it and instead invested in chemical exfoliant and retinol. My skin thanked me. I was clear about how sensitive my skin was and yet they still insisted this was the best thing. I ended up using it on my feet.
I just ordered a salicylic acid based cleanser and I used it for the first time today. Idk how I stumbled upon this channel but hey...I'm a new subscriber now and I'm eager learn more about skin care and stuff cuz I'm really tired from my acne prone, hyperpigmented scarred face.
This has been a real eye opener. I am so used to using pore strips once a month. I didn't realize how damaging they were to the skin! I know that there's always the pain from ripping them off and the slight after burn, but I honestly didn't know they ripped off a layer of skin!
not only that but the strips 'cause the pores to get ultra large. And due to opening them so far it's so much easier for them to get filled up with dirt right away again which basically undos everything you just did with the strip.
marketing... you get balckheads more frequently, thus buy more strips to remove them. gotta admit that the industry is a genius in ripping people off @@jos-josradvanji6203
I noticed that every time I used physical exfoliators, red spots from acne that had already disappeared from my skin, appeared again and they were one more time very noticeable.
sheesh, I used half of the things mentioned here. Funny thing during the lockdown and when I started working from home, I became lazy and stop using a lot of these products. My skin got a lot better and brighter as well. One good thing the lockdown taught me was that my skincare was awful
I use a sugar scrub for my face and body (the face scrub is gentler). Both use a mixture of physical and chemical, but I've found that the sugar starts to melt immediately and doesn't scratch or irritate. It basically turns to a slush. I like it and haven't noticed any irritation or distress.
I always had the feeling that my skin is getting worse after a physically body scrub... after the shower my skin was soft but after one day I've got pimples! Thank you for making this video!
I've watch a video where a skincare "guru" was pestering about St Yves face scrub because it was causing microtears on the skin, but then she was micro needling her face after applying The Ordinary AHA + BHA acid peel. Do what always worked for you. You know your skin the best. If something is working wonders on you, don't change.
Now I understand y whenever I used facial scrub, I only end up with breakouts. So what I do now is steam my face once a wk,then used the circular end of pimple extractor to remove my whiteheads. I hope I am doing it right, Doc. Thanks so much.
I have been using Natural face Scrub.. Like salt or Sugar, add black coffee and add a little bit of lukewarm water.. mix them well and scrub gently to your face.. used this twice a month.
@@dharyljayparame4189 Be careful using natural products if you are allergic to any plants. I ended up in the ER trying to use more natural skin care. I use, dermalogica, Neutrogena, and Clinique for all my skincare and makeup. I rarely break out and no anaphylaxis reaction, which is important.
This video was so informative! So I've been using St ives for 10 years! I gotta be honest, it's worked REALLY well for me. I exfoliate 1-2 per week, and it's really helped me to ease away my dull skin, makes my skin glow, feel soft, etc. I feel as though I'm the outlier in this situation though, so I don't want anyone to start using it if it hurts their skin. Everyone's skin is unique in that way :) I'm probably gonna keep using St ives, because my skin looks dull and blackheads appears more when I didn’t used for a long time. But I am glad I watched this video in case I want to switch it up!
Although it’s working for you right now you should try alternatives that are better. It’s not worth putting your skin through that stress. Chemical exfoliants are so much better from experience.
Sadly it doesnt works on me. My flawless face became sensitive after that. I used it because it worked on my friend so i wanted to give it a try too, hoping my skin would get super flawless ahah, ended up different. 😕maybe bcos i wasnt being grateful😂

I used everything mentioned in this video and I agree, for me the more complicated and more products you use in your face the more problem. I am suffering from Acne because of PCOS. My skin care consist of Cerave Salicylic Acid Cleanser(morning) Neutrogena Moisturizer and sunscreen. At night I use Cerave normal cleanser neutrogena moisturizer and cerave retinol. And my skin thanks me. I do get pimple one or 2 depending on my diet and sleep. So folks, MAKE IT SIMPLE.
Thank you very much for the info Dr. Before this, there are so many seller promoting their product to me that are listed on the video. Now I am more understand and well aware.
I used to work in a clinical spa that specialized in facials, peels, injectables etc..I remember the estheticians would say how harmful the sonic brushes were that they were leaving pits in their clients skin. Micellar water is good to remove some makeup but some oil based removers clean the skin better.
I have tried most of the things mentioned except for charcoal mask and blackhead strips. I agree most of them are a gimmick. Although a good physical exfoliator I am not ready to give up quite yet. Been using those on both my face and body for over a decade and never experienced an issue. No breakouts, no red blotches, no viral infections. I listen to my skin, if I feel it was a bit much I give myself a break.
This doctor knows what he is talking about. Everything he said is true and I know this because facialists I have seen say the same. Also, my mother taught me the best way to exfoliate the body is to use a wash cloth every time you bathe or shower. Follow up with lotion. Just like my mom, I have soft skin. People tell me all the time.
I"m so glad I stumbled on your channel! Not only that you give us alternative ways to be better handlers of our skin but you also entertain us, yep, you're not boring unlike other that seems like they're just narrating. Also, thanks for putting visuals like large fonts. It helps me a lot since I'm a visual learner!
Thank God, I never used these skincare trends, cos' in the first place I don't have the budget to purchase LOL; though I have an Ultrasonic brush which it's on my drawers I never use it. I always chose products that are comfortable for my skin.
I have an ultrasonic brush and it's definitely not 5-10mins but 1min. They have this beeping sound that notifies you when to move on to the next area. After 1 miniute the brush stops vibrating.
Late but I am someone who has used pore strips about 5-7 times in my lifetime. Never had any acne or pimples, just wanted to exfoliate. It helped. A lot. But I stopped using them bc I have eczema and noticed that the bridge of my nose would be dry and patchy afterwards. Thought it was eczema but I noted that it felt more like a skin layer was missing or patchy dead skin than eczema.. Not shocked to hear it removes a layer of the skin. I think the most predatory thing on this list is the Micellar Wipes, honestly. A lot of Micellar water is marketed as not having alcohol, and that’s sorta the whole appeal. Regular makeup wipes contain alcohol and dries the skin. So the fact that micellar wipes are marketed that way but contain high alcohol is so gross. Also, I wanted to know what your take on Diamond Cream Facials are?
Less? So just cleanser and moisturizer? That's a really dated idea. The great serums and retinols they have available today in addition to cleansers, moisturizers and sunscreens are the reason why people have such great skin compared to 50 years ago.
@@yourmajesty3569less is more doesn't necessarily mean you can only use basic skincare. But it's more using less products but potent and well-researched than having a lot of beauty trend products that have the overclaimed benefits just because they're advertised as such.
I never wash my face. I use a rose water spray with a light serum and then a moisturizer. That's it. I am 64 and everyone thinks I am at least 10 years younger. I will be starting a channel on how to touch the face in a gentle manner to revitalize and nurture you and your face. I watch these videos to be informed and some of it is good but then they say surgery is the only answer and that is ridiculous. What about accepting and working with what you have.
I use the exfoliation glove/cloth for the plaque psoriasis on my body once a week. As you said, going too hard or too frequently is bad and causes tears and cuts, but being careful and spacing the usage out enough works well for me. I also use a face roller (not the galvanic massager, but one of those jade rolling types) not coz I think it actually does anything in particular, but coz it feels nice (especially) when I have a headache. It is a nice easy way for me to reduce stress and pain, which DOES impact stress acne breakouts for me. Not magic, just relaxing.
I have been using physical exfoliated for sixty years. So I am alarmed at what you said. I’ve been putting off using a chemical exfoliater but will buy one now. Thank you for your advice
I’m glad the Ultrasonic brush was mentioned. It’s way too abrasive for the skin. I’m shocked coconut oil wasn’t mentioned in this video tho. Coconut oil is a no-go if you have oily skin.
Coconut oil can work for some people no matter dry or oily, the problem is that it can cause the type of acne that is hard sore bumps on the face. However, using oil as a makeup remover or cleanser actually works really well because it calms down oil production and keeps your face hydrated. I have oily/combination and breakout prone skin and using olive and avocado oil as a face wash was the best thing I ever did for it. It is also great for dry arms and legs in winter, I put it on before getting out of the shower and my skin is much happier.
Used the Biore pore strips... all can say about that is it stuck onto the skin of my nose so strong that I was in pain trying to pull it off. After a little time I finally got it off and noticed the pain was from the strip pulling off SKIN along with the SMALL amount of blackheads! Won't be doing that again... Thanks for the informative video!. .👩🏻 👏🏻
For me it worked well bc i only had 1 big inflamed blackhead but yea i feel like it stripped the natural oil that i need for my skin so im not using it again
I was told 20 years ago in HK not to use strips as they enlarge the pores, I was gutted because they were selling them so cheap and i thought I was getting a bargain. Needless to say, I left empty handed and went for a facial instead where the squeeze out your pores for you
This video is very informative. I found most of the skincare trends in the list are stupid but because many people recommend it, I thought I am just being salty. Turns out it is right LOL. Not forget to say that some of the trends cost a lot. I feel bad for those who pay for nothing. The only one I did was the scrub/physical exfoliator. I do it once a week. I used chemical exfoliator too but because it is chemical, I thought it would be dangerous but turns out it is safer.
So many languages and you decided to speak the truth. Thank you for making this video, you helped me a lot, especially because the topic of skin care fascinates me, I did not fully understand many things but, that's more because I speak Spanish and very little English and the other subtitles don't even say so.
1:46 yeah but like apricot scrubs are the ones that are usually told to be stayed away from because of the cruched seed's jaged edges and oatmeal is the most gentle exfoliant plus it gets softer and softer the more you rub your skin wit it i guess it depends 🤔
The sonic face brush caused an acne breakout on my face.I would never ever use it again. The glove scrub I used twice or thrice a week due to the humidity an pollution, I think it works well and it keeps my skin smooth and all. No issues on my end.
Those gloves on the body have been a game chnager for my ingrown hairs and killaris pitaris or whatever it's called. I simply wash and then use a little lotion after shower and my skin is soft amd blemish free. Which I use to get ance on my body before I started to exfolite regularly
@Jillian Hubert I just ordered it for myself recently! I run dry but have texture on my forehead I want to lessen. Overall I've got nice skin though. I've never used exfloiants so I'm a bit nervous how my skin will react...
@@kayartdotjpeg my skin got really warm, the first time I wondered if I made a mistake but aside from it feeling really warm I had no adverse reactions, just great skin and it wasn't dry at all. I really hope you like it as much as I do!
I can only use dermalogica, Neutrogena and Clinique products for facial care and makeup. Dermalogica is great for sunscreen. I haven't tried too many of their other products. Neutrogena is my go to for cleansers and exfoliators. Clinique is my go to for makeup. Often I find I'm allergic to other brands whether it is the chemicals, metals or plant product. I have to say away from 'natural' facial care unless I want hives.
Just started my skincare journey and this is really helping. I used physical exfoliators in the past but thank goodness I threw them out because of how sensitive and day my skin felt after a few uses. I was considering getting a sonic brush but I'm going to stay now thanks to you sir. Thank you for sharing this information so we can do our skincare journey safely.
I literally just used a charcoal mask the other night for the first time, I would not use it again. It pulled out all the peach fuz from my skin (which hurt) and it pulled off some skin, It didn't really get out any blackheads or clean out my pores it just dried out my skin and irritated it. :(
The body exfoliation part surprised me the most. I would get cysts on my thighs and hips and I started exfoliating those areas and in about 2 weeks it is gone. I will buy the lotion once I run out of the Epsom salt and see if it does the same. Thank you!
When I was a teenager I used to make my own face scrubs and masks 😱 after high school I switched my routine entirely to Curology and my skin started to heal and get better after years of overuse of benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid and weird scrubs, masks, and pore strips. Now I mainly use CeraVe, I use the milky hydrating cleanser and then my Curology serum and retinal only once a week after I always moisturize. In the morning I just apply vitamin C and sunscreen. I no longer wear foundation or other makeup on my skin, I don’t do any masks, and I also stopped over stripping my skin. My skin is sensitive and I’m glad I’ve switched to a much more gentle routine.
Good advice! I’ve used pore strips, that little gold device that looks like a razor and exfoliations. Fortunately, I didn’t persist with any and now use retinol serum, sunscreen and hyaluronic acid.
I love exfoliating gloves. Been apart of my Chinese heritage and after using it weekly for so many years it's the best exfoliation for the body. I usually soak 30 min in the tub for the skin to sog and then get to business.
I used pore strips when I first started doing proper skincare, but improved my routine a lot since then. The last time I used a pore strip I noticed that it made the area extra dry and irritated for days afterwards, will never use it again. Ty for the alternative suggestions.
im so glad i came across this video!! ive been using products and wondering why my skins been getting worse or having no improvement with some of the products i use, definitely changing my skin care routine from now on 🥰
The one item that I do use out of this list is the exfoliating glove. My shins used to be extremely flaky and dry and once I started using the exfoliating glove gently I've noticed that it has made any huge difference in that flaky dry skin. And of course I do moisturize afterwards. So my question would be since it is working for me and I don't seem to have problems is that something I should quit using anyways? And if so how do I get rid of that dry flaky skin that probably will come back?
If you're getting great results with the exfoliating glove, keep using it! I'd definitely recommend moisturizing your shins too, it might help with the flaking and you won't have to exfoliate as often
Aquaphor ( in the jar ) works for my skin. I have combination crazy skin. Dry flakes sometimes all over. The aquaphor after a shower while skin is damp , seals in the moisture.
I really love gloves but especially the gloves that are made by palm fibers from Morocco, also applying honey in steamy shower will help moisturise your skin( your skin will not be sticky if you applying in shower) I notesed that people are afraid of oils, but are such a game changer. My skin loves oils so after shower I apply Immortel macerat oil (which has more lighter serum consistency),Argan, Rosehip, Almond oils and finish with dr. Hauschka moisturiser. in India is a tradition to brush your body with a big natural brush. You do what works for you and you are open to new possibilities.
I love that glove, too! You Need to use It very gently and not too often, but once in a while it's good. Once in a month for me Is fine. I discovered It in a hammam. You Need to warm up your skin in the short, wash with real soap, rinse, then the glove adjusting pressure. Wash again with pure soap then apply a Natural based moisturing cream or oil. Just don't exfoliate inflammed/irritated/broken skin!
I thought I was doing everything right, until I seen a dermatologist, turns out everything I thought was right was wrong because my skin wasn’t bad original from skin care it was diet, I am allergic to pork and it came out as eczema. So all the additional skin care was only irritating it more because I was still eating pork. 😂
I definitely used pore strips as a teen. But then I was doing EVERYTHING wrong. I scrubbed and scrubbed with all these drying harsh cleansers not realizing that my skin is naturally slightly dry so my skin was trying so hard to save itself by producing more oil the more I scrubbed. Thankfully I only used the strips about once a month and in college my family took a vacation to Maui where I discovered coconut milk bar soap that didn't make my sunburn crack and bleed like the face soaps I was always using and I went "wait.... maybe that's the problem" my whole skin care routine changed and my acne all but vanished by being contrary to everything I'd been told and moisturizing my zits away.
You're not alone 😭 I used these disposable scrubbing pads that were literally like the scrubbers on sponges for pots and pans 🫥 they don't even sell them anymore. My mom always told me I was ruining my skin but it made sense to me 😢 I also used straight rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball... I thought I was on to something, it removed the oil and so much invisible dirt. My poor nose was peeling off in layers, horrifying... And when Biore came out with those pore strips we all used them. We didn't have free dermatological advice available. Modern day Internet could have saved me from a lot of self destruction 💀
(Weirdly I realized I was doing everything wrong on a family vacation too!! I forgot all my products and just washed with a washcloth and water and my skin was so much better.)
@@LunarEleven I think it goes beyond just skincare too tbh. I look back on it and realize, we just did what we were told by the people who were selling products that's what the generation raising us did. We used fabric softener and sorted our laundry by color and never questioned that the two correlated. We ate, bathed, and cared for items like crap until we grew up and questioned why we were listening to the people who wanted our things to wear out so we'd but more stuff. Thankfully some of us had grandparents who knew better. But we were raised in a time where lobbyist marketing were the preachers of home and health care. It was kinda nasty what companies got away with.
The charcoal peel actually helps my Seborrheic dermatitis on my cheeks for exfoliating, but wreaks angry red havoc anywhere else. I use pore strips on my nose and chin 1x a week, they’re very drying so I oil cleanse first. I use MCT 8 oil as an oil cleanser. Everyone’s different!
I never knew how many micro hairs I have on my face until I tried a peel off mask >.< Never again... Nearly panicked when you mentioned body scrub mitts. Until I realised I'm far too lazy to use them more than once a month, lol Tnx for great vid x
I don't ever use sugar scrubs on my face. It's far too harsh and painful. About once every 1-2 weeks, I use a washcloth that Ive gotten wet with relatively hot water, and I very lightly rub it on my face trying to get each area equally. I don't press very hard and it doesn't hurt. Is this a good alternative to scrubs? I use products with chemical exfoliants in them but sometimes I feel like physically exfoliating gets my skin cleaner after a couple of weeks.
What would you recommend for blackheads instead of the strips if you have rosacea? I was told SA cleansers are too harsh for rosacea. Thanks so much for your helpful video!
I have low thyroid and am constantly struggling with exfoliating all the extra dry skin that builds up due to this condition. I have found both the physical exfoliation & sonic tools VERY helpful in removing all the dead skin. In fact, they have been the only things that HAVE worked. However, I can see how it would not be beneficial for most. I used to use chemical exfoliants and would still be able to peel dead skin off a freshly washed, masked & chemically exfoliated face. I no longer deal with breakout issues & people are always commenting on how young I look. I appreciate this video as I believe it to be true for most.
I'm really grateful that I found this video today. Now I know what to use on my skin. I was using both physical exfoliants and exfoliating gloves earlier this year. I did notice a micro tear on my thigh months later and I have stopped it since then. However, I had terrible ringworm a few months afterwards which I think I was so susceptible to because my skin had become so weak. I'm still treating the ringworm presently and I hope I get it rid of it all soon. I'm never using any of those again!
True! I used to clean my skin with those brushes and now I ended up with sensitive skin and redness! I hate it how adverts fool us to buy expensive stuff that even harm us
Thanks Doc! This is such great info. Glycolic acid can do SO much more than a face scrub! I do like to lightly use the exfoliating gloves before self-tanner application- they really help w/ rough elbows, knees, ankles, and heels 💛💛💛
This kind of expertise videos are really appreciated to understand what is really needed to do for skin care. Now the markets are oversaturated with the harmful skin care products which is even costly also but due to not having proper knowledge for skin care products, everyone are suffering. Thank you to Dr.ing for raising consciousness against this harmful use of skin care products.
My experience with the exfoliating glove is not bad. I dont use it on my face, except maybe 6 times a year, but I use it for my body and I havent experienced any infection or tear as a result. I should point out that am a black woman and I live in west Africa, so this might be a plus for me. The only thing that has ever made my skin sensitive is, my use of baby lotion.
Been switch to chemical exfoliator from physical one since last year. I only use the miscellar wipes when going out, but make sure to cleanse my face thoroughly when I'm back home!
I agree with everything, except the exfoliating gloves. Dry brushing feels so good on the body and it really gets your circulation and lymph flow going.

I used St. Ives exfoliating wash in the early 2000's until I got one of pieces of exfoliate stuck in my eye. That was the most painful and expensive lesson that I've learned.
Oh i had that happen right before a field trip once! Its like getting your eyes shredded every time you blink

Happened to me also!
Physical exfoliating scrub -> Chemical exfoliate once to twice a week.
Vibrating cleansing brush -> regular cleanser 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Micellar water/face wipes -> regular cleanser
Pore stripes -> retinol or salicylic acid

Face messaging tools -> surgical face lift
Body exfoliating gloves -> salicylic acid cream

As someone in my 40's and who has worked with plastic surgeons for most of my career, I think there's something important to remember.
What works for one person doesn't necessarily jive with the next.
Personally, a blend of acid and physical exfoliation keeps my face and body skin bright, clear and happy.
My skin is oil rich, and likes to stick around. 🤷♀️
Retinol turns my skin to pure fire in any strength.
The next person might need something quite different.
Derms tend to be fairly adamant, almost militant in their recommendations.
You know your skin.
Be gentle, use high quality tested products from trusted sources.. and TRY THINGS.
Above all, good skin starts from the inside out.

I always got ingrown hair after bikini wax and I was following the esthetician's advice to use physical exfoliation. I was fed up and deciding to try chemical exfoliation (glycolic acid 7%) and it was a game changer! never ever had problem since.
That's smart! Another comment mentioned using it to make her feet softer!
How many times do you use it in a week ?
@@nmooshka_301 you can use the glycolic acid toner everyday since it's low concentration. For BHA and AHA peeling once a week is enough

The rule after waxing is you dont use no shower gel, cream, oil,.... in waxed area for 24 hours only water and you dont have bumps or ingrown hairs.
Knowing that I don't use any of these products/methods in my skin care routine is such a relief. I also don't recommend the physical scrubs because it can also cause breakouts and irritations.

@@user-kpkxgtj they call them facial scrubs though.

It works for me too... Plus there are other types u can choose... The heavy one is peach n crushed almonf kernal....the famous one
@@sweetstrawberry8738 if u have good skin. Just maintain it... U are lucky. I was having similar issue before, my skin was good but i tried to use some products, its getting worse. But u know what make it worse, i change other products to make it better but nah it doesnt work. Do rescue your skin before it turns bad.
@@secretsoul6882 it turned bad already for me😭 i regret the day i started exfoliating my face😢 then i started using another and another product to save my face but i just make it worse. 😢 its been months im suffering from this. Huhu.
Fragranced skin care, no 1 culprit for skin irritation.
Me too😭
I hate fragrance and alcohol
That's a fact, speaking from experience
Omg. Me too! The worst.
Not true
I also never use these products
The only skincare products I own are a face wash, a toner, lotion and a sunscreen
(minimalist + broke) 😅
Same here ...same 😂😂
Lol 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂buti nlng tlg..walang budget..
I have one of the ultrasonic brushes also, used it four or five times, never used it again...don't even know why. 🤷🏻♀️
Less is more when it comes to your face. Dont let the current beauty trend fool you.
Less? So just cleanser and moisturizer?
That's a really dated idea.
The great serums and retinols they have available today in addition to cleansers, moisturizers and sunscreens are the reason why people have such great skin compared to 50 years ago.
@@yourmajesty3569 It's probably mostly just the sunscreen
Correct..I have reduced my 21 steps of skincare routine to 13, and I still look marvellous
Because it works for some people. The ones in video are bad for anyone
I used avocado oil, coconut always messed up my skin.
I use almond oil!
Coconut oil never works for anything… I used it on my hair once and my hair fell out
Used the Biore pore strips... all can say about that is it stuck onto the skin of my nose so strong that I was in pain trying to pull it off. After a little time I finally got it off and noticed the pain was from the strip pulling off SKIN along with the SMALL amount of blackheads! Won't be doing that again... Thanks for the informative video!. .👩🏻 👏🏻
Ughhh thats sounds painful
If this happens to anyone else, just get the strip wet again and it will come right off no pain.
Good lord...mine never stuck!!! NEVER!!!
@@sallyohmygollly yeah, if I accidentally leave it on too long (multitasking) I’ll spray the strip a little more with water.
Baking soda mixed with butter would make good exfoliator.
@@maretvilla1531 you should never be putting baking soda or butter on your skin??? oh my god.
@@notcomfortable_here I tried and it works.
I love the gloves on my legs before shaving, really leave my legs super smooth.
Thank you so much! Its a lot of wrong information on the UA-cam caused by promotion of different products. Im happy to find out this video 😊
What types of chemical exfoliants would you recommend for dry and sensitive skin?
Alpha hydroxy acid, beta hydroxy acid and lactic acid. I used the ones from Inkey List since they are great for sensitive skin.
I used honeymoon glow by farmacy, it's pricey but I'm dry and sensitive and it's worked really well for me. It's kind of moisturizing almost
Just put moisturizer on your eyes and underneath and don't pit any super close to your eyes and you'll be fine! I started using it once a week but now I do it 2 to 3 times weekly.
The pore strips never worked for me, the strip always peeled away and left me with a layer of glue on my skin. 😅
Me either, and after peeling it off there would be maybe one or two clogged pores pulled out but nothing more waste of time and money.
pore strips damaged my skin. Now I double cleanse then add moisturizer for dry skin, use water-based products. Great video! Short and sweet
Thanks for liking :)
Can you show us images revealing how our skin is damaged before and after using physical exfoliator?
Good advice! I’ve used pore strips, that little gold device that looks like a razor and exfoliations. Fortunately, I didn’t persist with any and now use retinol serum, sunscreen and hyaluronic acid.
I love exfoliating gloves. Been apart of my Chinese heritage and after using it weekly for so many years it's the best exfoliation for the body. I usually soak 30 min in the tub for the skin to sog and then get to business.
You need a dry brush
Same as a moroccan, I'll be to differ with him on that point, it works for me and it helps my body keep a clear and nice body skin.
@@k8lynmae it's too rough... an exfoliating glove, used once a week is more than enough.
I used pore strips when I first started doing proper skincare, but improved my routine a lot since then. The last time I used a pore strip I noticed that it made the area extra dry and irritated for days afterwards, will never use it again. Ty for the alternative suggestions.
im so glad i came across this video!! ive been using products and wondering why my skins been getting worse or having no improvement with some of the products i use, definitely changing my skin care routine from now on 🥰
Glad it was helpful!
Haha same I scrubbed and scrubbed too
I suddenly remember using ‘SNAP’ during the 70’s to fight acne. 🙄
You're not alone 😭 I used these disposable scrubbing pads that were literally like the scrubbers on sponges for pots and pans 🫥 they don't even sell them anymore. My mom always told me I was ruining my skin but it made sense to me 😢
I also used straight rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball...
Everyone’s different!
years back I ditched the St. Ive's apricot scrub for The Ordinary's AHA + BHA exfoliating mask. Same price, world of a difference!
Thanks I thought so too. I never thought using physical exfoliators/scrubs made any sense, it always tore my skin.
I never knew how many micro hairs I have on my face until I tried a peel off mask >.< Never again...
Nearly panicked when you mentioned body scrub mitts. Until I realised I'm far too lazy to use them more than once a month, lol
Tnx for great vid x
Very informative, thank you for educating us about skin care.
Lactic acid, or sacylic acid lotions for body are usually expensive :( . Im not dare to use them, so i'll keep use scrub for body.
Everyone has skin thats a little different. If it works and doesn’t cause irritation it’s probably just what works for your skin :)))
Thank you for your videos! Please keep more them coming! Please educate us how to look after an oily skin with some acne.
You’re only susceptible if you have a weak immune system, not a weakened skin. It’s also contagious.
