- You're shocked and disappointed that you didn't get that promotion. Career coach Roberta "Bobbie" LaPorte explains how to turn it into a positive experience.
What you do is quit. You move on to a place where your hard work will be acknowledged and appreciated.
Places like those don't exist anymore
@@sullygaming1137 that’s why you just bounce back and forth
Damn straight, worked for me.
@@sullygaming1137they do, you just have to find them. Then if they start to go sour leave them to.
However, this really works if you are a genuine high performer and knowledgeable!
This is complete bullshit! They promote who they like the most.
Yep. There was a time when I would have said this was wrong and merit will win out. I've been screwed over too many times. It's a popularity contest with promotions. Maybe external hiring might be different, I have no idea.
Thats some true shyt its fukkin politrix at work
Forget that! I would look for another job!
😂🤣😂🤣
Agreed
Or....now stay with me here, they just pick a person they like because the workplace is like high school. It can have nothing to do with performance.
It's so stupid. How can a company/ corporate look at how people act rather than their performance? Are people there to make friends or sth? Wtf are employees employed for in the first place?
Genesis Noftle so true
Sad but true
I see now..smh
Old creepy bosses preying on the young for sex and promoting them is still a thing
I was just passed over after 5 star review, really considering a new career at this point. Beyond frustrating….
Employee: Where did I fall down?
Manager: A little too far to the left of my ass...
Employee: So how can I improve my chances for a promotion next time?
Manager: Oh, simple...just align your lips better with my ass..
If you're passed over for a promotion and you feel that you were a strong employee that year, pack your bags and find somewhere else to work. Unfortunately, it'll probably happen somewhere else. The workplace is a joke. It's like glorified high school. Nowadays, promotions are not based upon merit. They're largely based upon 99% workplace politics and 1% actual work. The people who actually WORK are almost always passed over for promotions. I was recently passed over for a promotion this year and I am gone as soon as I find another opportunity.

Trust me, I know this better than anyone. No Matter how hard I work and try. There is always that brick wall in front on me which I run head first into. I try to get along with the boss but I guess since I don't kiss her ass enough and worship the ground she walks on I get screwed out of a promotion TWICE in less than 6 months. It's like high school and it's not fair.
+CF-105 Games
Make it 3 times now.
+CF-105 Games
It's happened to me 2 times now. Just got fucked over again this month. There is no winning other than just updating your resume and finding a new job.
Yvegni Spokanovich
It's happened to me 3 times now in the last 4 months. They always give excuses, they first said I was too good for the other position, next time it was that I wasn't skilled enough so I went and got the training and now it's my attitude even though I don't do anything wrong nor say anything bad I am friendly to everyone including management and yet they say I have a bad attitude. They keep moving the goal post because they just don't want to promote me. But I am good enough to train the new staff who then get promoted over me, I am good enough then. I am finding a new job, they can stick theirs once I find the new one. I am tired of being overlooked, abused and treated like dirt.
CF-105 Games
I know what you're going through. My situation is almost identical except that they it's strictly them "moving the goal posts". Exceeded all of my goals, got highly meets on my assessment and still got screwed over. Yes, it sounds like...really in both of our cases..that they do not want to promote us. Promotions are mysterious things and albeit but a few places...it's rarely just about doing work. Management is not going to promote a competent employee, why? Because then you become a threat to their position. I know it hurts but it's definitely time for you to find a new job. The same goes for me.
I was just passed over me and another co-worker of mine, we did everything that was expected of us, helped out in different departments when asked, always on time, no errors, always make goal, and it’s back room politics that screwed us, favoritism and it’s Bs, we both were promised something and it didn’t happen.
Join the club. I was given a 30 day warning that I was getting promoted to supervisor. Was lied to. Quit that job last oct. Found out one of the ass kissers with way less experience then me got promoted. Heard the guy walks around all day on his phone taking to his wife. Guess they don’t care…
Most people can't get promoted. You are hired with the promise of a promotion and a raIse. Then it never happens. Keep working hard but try to find a better job. Try to start your own business. There is no future in many of these corporate jobs.
@@amandathompson9347 So true. The people at the top will say anything to get you locked in. The good ole boy and girl club is still alive. They only care about themselves and keeping their big paychecks.
Yea I gotta go.
Unfortunately my company just promoted the least performing sales person in our group to management this had nothing to do with a merit based system and all to do with politics and a$$ kissing.
Yup the buddy hand shaking work place political game
Had to get him off the sales floor lol
I sat with the manager and asked why and he's got nothing, no specifics. I know this is time for me to move on and find another prospect
Same
I wish you all the best. Hang in there.
Same boat I'm so over it. Dealing with office politics is eating me up
All the best to you. Sooner or later, this catches up to management…
This was the same for me
Leave and work with people who aren't morons. If you believe you aren't being valued correctly then they are not good people to work with. Sometimes they will even not promote the best people because they see them as a threat once all the stupid people take over in a company.
MrApplewine i feel that a lot where i work.
Walmart for you
It’s who you know not what you know that will get you promoted.
What really blows my mind is after putting your all in your work neglecting family time. They can still feel you not suitable. Then what advice are we given, see where you went wrong and improve. Meaning work even harder. Yet other people work less and get promoted. I personally think that never put your all in your work and you might actually get promoted.😁
You don't have to sit with your manager after you were toiling for years for that promotion and you got passed over. If they didn't see your work, it means that they close their eyes intentionally. Move on. They don't deserve you. It's all politics.
Ive been on both sides of the fence and the boss will give it to the one they connect most with, regardless of who's best
I've found the following reasons in my past work experiences:
The person who got the promotion was racially diverse(not white, not male). He/she was really good friends with the boss or attractive to the boss. He/she is just a more fun person to hang out with and play fantasy football with. It all boils down to relationships and that "soft skills" bullshit. I'd be great if the people with the best work ethic and actual skills would be promoted once in a while.
Racially diverse?? BS! The stats don’t line up with your beta “logic”
@@FlabbyDouglas they dont? what about all the DEI initiatives?
it was based off of subjective criteria which means the person who fed her office gossip got promoted, and not based off of facts. And everyone who got the promotion were under 40. I'm over 40. Hmmm... and I did ask my manager for examples and she had NONE.
You cannot win when your face doesn`t fit.
Doesn`t matter if you work harder than anyone else.
If your work ethic is better than those who "Can`t be arsed".
If you have ideas that will improve efficiency and save money.
If you are the only one who can transition the many factions at work.
If your management team are rotten to the core the best option is to just leave.
Human Resources are just the same, running their little departments like their own private fiefdoms, promoting friends and family in a culture of Sycophantism and Cronyism.
When good workers are kept in place because they do a good job, the ones getting promoted tend to be the bad workers who after a time, become the management.
This is absolutely spot on
Fax
Walmart
Move on! HR is there to protect the company not help you.
This, and articles on the same issue, act as if there are always valid reasons why someone didn't get the promotion. Valid in terms of it just being about needing to develop skills or get more training to make you a more suitable candidate in future.
What if they really need you to stay stuck in the same position because that's the only way the real work is going to get done?
What if the other person is a pushover and they want someone they can control or who won't stand up their BS demands?
What if that person has worked with, or knows, the people making the choice and it's the personal relationship that gets them job?
If you think you can do better, and you aren't stuck for some reason (eg family) then consider your options and move on. You might find that, amazingly, when you're ready to tell them to stick their job that suddenly other options - pay, promotions, etc. - are now possible. If they don't fight to keep you .. aren't you better off anyway?
I agree Ohreally.
I've seen other videos on here and it's pretty much advising the same thing.
I believe it's counter-productive.
It's a tough spot for a boss or HR to decide who gets promoted or gets a raise. Unless it's straight commission sales, you may not like any of their
explanation because you put them on the spot.
The only time you can talk to your boss about this stuff is if they promised you a raise/promotion and you still didn't get it.
I got discriminated against because of my age (My boss had an unwritten rule that he didn't promote people under a certain age!).
Not reacting negatively is so important! It's challenging but shows you're professional.
People get tired of that
Good to see u here!
Easy the first time, eventually you get sick of it
If your company isn't totally brain dead, they should come to you let you know what you can do. Ideally, at the time they tell you that someone else got the promotion. If they don't let you know and you find out with everyone else, they don't care and it is time to move. They should be professionals and not make you beg for information.
Exactly that happened to me. Well to be honest i knew a lot earlier than anyone realised, i just kept a poker face and my mouth shut (which was bloody hard to do). The benefit to that was that i then knew what everybody looked like when they were lying and trying to hide something. That proved to be valuable later on.
They passed me over. I dumped them. I have a similar job now and people want to know where I am what I do, what I make, and they are in suspense. Last laugh I guess.
what if it was down to good old fashion dirty politics?
This is what I am facing
What? Absolutely ridiculous, no way. You have integrity and self worth you are worth more then that. Do not sit down with your manager that is crazy do not give them the satisfaction of knowing that you are somewhat upset…congradulate the person who got the promotion and quietly find another job do not tell your best friend at work stay quiet and move on let them realize the mistake they made once you are gone.
Good advice
You are right
You can be the best in your team but if management sees that you do such a good job at your position, they will keep you there and hire somebody else because by the end of the day they are making alot of money from you.
Aka your a cog in the wheel
I was passed over for a part timer with no experience who didn't want a career in the industry! As opposed to me who had a lot of experience (and different facets of the industry), was full time virtually fully trained up, and was seeking to further a career in the industry. I'd already been loyal and turned down an offer with another place (they approached me) in the same chain.
The guy was trained up behind my back, not a single word was said to me (i would've appreciated a little warning of what was coming). On my first day back after an op (the promotion happened while was off ill) my previous supervisor came in and asked to speak to me, his words to me were "i'm sorry about what happened to you and the way it was done, i didn't agree with it and was very uncomfortable with it, i thought you should've been told, and i wasn't the only one who thought that. I was told that if i told you i wouldn't be allowed to work my notice and i'd lose my job immediately. The reason you weren't told is because The manager thought if you found out you'd leave and that would've left him with no full time staff and not enough part time staff to cover".
I did stay (proving the manager and a few others wrong), I was then approached by two other managers from the same chain to go and work for them, which my manager blocked! I then got set up and fired 6 months later!

Trust me, I have been passed over 3 times now. 3 times in ONE YEAR. The only thing they ever tell me is "it's not in my best interest". 1 was shortly after my father died last year. I only took 2 days off right after he died and I came back on the Monday (I had the Thurs off when he died, they gave me the Fri and Sat, Sunday was my day off). The funeral and memorial service was held Nov 15 and 16. I asked for those dates off due to that and they said they couldn't accommodate that as they were going away that weekend and the others had all asked for that weekend off, they then told me I should have and I quote "I should have planned my father's death better" like I can fucking control that. I went to the services and funeral and then worked both days begrudgingly. I was never compensated either for the 2 days I was suppose to get paid for after he died nope never got paid for those days either even though under the union I am entitled to it (just like I was entitled to the 2 days off for the funeral as well). I didn't go to the union about that because the last person that did go against them, they just kept finding reasons or plainly setting them up to suspend them till she quit, and I need the money right now so it wasn't a option.
Next up is they have in front of guests (since I work in a hotel) and the other staff have belittled me in front of them. Saying that I am only good for working the front desk and I am not too bright (despite my measured IQ of 140) and other nasty vile comments. I am so sick of the venom they keep soaking into me and it never seems to stop.
I am currently looking for another job, and trust me when I get it I am just leaving. No notice or nothing. They don't deserve it. I worked with the company for 5 years now, I have saved contracts with the hotel because of my work ethic and abilities making sure things are correctly documented and rates are correct things like that, and the thanks I get is all this venom. Ever since the last GM left, the new one has had a hate for me since the day I got to the hotel. No matter how hard I try I keep getting bit by the vipers that they are. It's maddening thinking about it.
I'm pretty sure you could have them over your fathers death and funeral (been there myself by the way). Treat as you wish to be treated. Fuck them!
I overheard the guy who got promoted over and his friend saying "we'll get rid of him somehow".
When i was fired i told my manager "the guy you promoted over me, he'll cock it up, he'll crumble under the pressure, he'll just go one day and not come back, i give him 6 months".
I was proven right! Lol.
kdlofty
Sure I could have sued, or I could have gone to the union on them. But why? All it would have done is put a big ass target on my back as they would worked even harder to get rid of me.
Trust me once the right opportunity comes along, I am ditching that place, no warning or anything. After all it's in my best interests right, lol?
Damn right it's in your interests. It's a toxic enviroment, and don't owe them a thing.
kdlofty
I know, that is why I was using the term, because that is what they told me when they have been fucking me over the last year. They kept using the guise of "It's in my best interest" when really it is in their best interest.
Another thing I didn't mention was that for those 2 days off that they "gave" me after my father died, it was without pay. I was suppose to be covered for up to 5 days of bereavement but I never got a single penny, so that is 2 days of work I never got paid for. That company is nothing but a bunch of slimeballs. It used to be good, I had no issues until last year about May when all this shit began to happen, that is when the old GM left and that bitch Jody took over as GM. Then all of a sudden I started getting screwed left and right. Yet they still have the gull to phone me asking for favors like when the person who works on the 2 days I have normally off just didn't show up for work, then she acts all nice like I am suppose to come running and do them favors after everything they have done to me in the last year. I won't though, they can find another puppet.
I've learned it's not just your hard skills in job knowledge that will get you ahead. Soft skills like how you get along with your co-workers how you deal with difficult situations and how you perceive others feedback even though you think it's stupid is a big part of how you will navigate to a promotion.. unfortunately sometimes you also have to play politics. Not so much brown-nosing but at least giving the appearance that you care about the direction of the company and not just what you want.
It’s literally all about relationships. My advice to any kid growing up now….don’t worry about hard work and dedication. It isn’t needed. Go in and suck on your boss any way he will let you, make him feel like he’s the best dude ever, and go to any functions or activities outside of work you can with him, and you will move up quickly. Hard workers don’t have time to hang out with their bosses and stroke their very sensitive egos. And because you always take care of things when they need it, they have time to hang out with their friends and aren’t worried about moving you up as your actually the one that’s hard to replace. That’s why so many people don’t get the job they feel they deserve. It’s hard to believe these style of bosses can sleep at night or look at themselves in the mirror. I personally would be embarrassed treating other hard working people like this. Especially the ones climbing mountains for me.
Agree
I have worked for years at a job and continuous nepotism coincidently more than 1 position was open and they still gave it to the under qualified and to their 2 friends. Everyone else within the workplaced were hoping I got.it because they've seen how much ive put into the workplace
The lady responding must be a boss by herself, so the demotion to someone actually works for her better.
@mrladlow I guess then it'd be who should I be good buddies with?
Sadly, promotion nowadays has very little to do with your performance within the workplace. Instead, it deals more with your relationship (network) within the organization. It's not about what you know or what you do, but it is all about who you know. Focus on perfecting your image and exposure within the workplace, and you will begin to see more doors open for you.
Last year I passed over for a Team Lead position. I was told I didn't have the mentality to work with associates and team leads although I had a management role and 5 years with the company, they gave the position to someone with no management experience and was with the company less than I have. Who recently was demoted. So, now I'm going for that same position. I worked hard on my peers but this year I was told I have good peers but I don't have leadership skills. Hmmmm....
The soft skill discussion leaves some space for arbitrary judgement. A boss can easily manipulate her or his team to attack highly performing staff collectively to eliminate future rivals. Those in the team having a fear of the boss will join the game of ostracising the targetted staff and the group would start to call him or her as lacking soft skills. The boss safely reflects so in the evaluation, and the game is set. I have seen this all the time and it endangers productivity and the achievements as a team or an organisation, while little would dare to speak out. In the end, the senior management team becomes a group mostly attracting lowly qualified and average performing employees without outstanding skills or talents. That's how a human society goes on as it has been so for thousands of years without any advancement. 😆
Fuck this, the only thing you can do is leave. Companies will abuse you, and keep going back to the abuse "well", as long as it works for them to hold you down. When I fill out the "career goals" field for my company HR crap every year, I now just put "N/A"
It is personal so why not take it personally?!
I work at a company that values diversity and it could’ve been a shortcoming but there is a also a big chance I wasn’t gay enough/black enough/asian enough whatever race they were looking for to help meet there diversity quota.. seems like everyone in the position I am going for is some sort of minority rather it be gay/lesbian/middle eastern Asian there are multiple team leads and a lot of them are terrible and you wonder how they got the position but they have the same thing in common that they are some sort of minority and not all the same.. unless they are gay or trans then it seems you will are more likely to get an opportunity.
Or a lot of it may have to do with the fact that he is a tall strapping man with a “presence”.
Hmmm ... What if it is such a string-up to the point where they
Iterviewers lie about their interview feedback, in writing?...
I used to pay attention to these videos until I got a corporate job. All of this advice is nonsense. There is a game to play at every company and you have to do your best to navigate. Pick your battles and don't be afraid to let your competition crash and burn.
You resign and don’t look back.
What they want the first time, always contradicts what they want the second time. It's funny. Do A. You do A. They acknowledge it, but they want B. So you do B. They say congrats! Oh...but we wanted C. Sorry. And on and on.
On the other hand, job promotions mean nothing to me. I rather help people, including the elderly in my community as an alternative showing why helping people is a job promotion to me. Who needs job promotions when helping people in the community is an alternative?
Don’t listen to her.
You prove your worth to yourself. Show your managers that the person they picked to promote was the wrong choice. Don’t congratulate the wrong choice. The only person who holds you back from being promoted is you.
Once you show your managers they picked wrong they will recommend you to the store manager again to be promoted.
Quit. You have to put yourself first because nobody else will.
This is such bunch of crap
Soft skills = Brown nosing
Not all the time but usually.
This is an outdated mindset. The good ole boy system is still going on.
This video sucks.. nothing helpful at all.. save your time
Michael Fazioli She's right. I think people don't get promoted because they don't demonstrate the softer skills enough. It's an easy thing to overlook though.
I don't want to work for a company that values socializing and schmoozing. That is not what I value. I want to work for a company that values results and I believe that is what is profitable for the owners. I'm a nice guy and and friendly and meet regularly with leadership, but I don't go beyond that. It is fake and not what I want to focus on.
MrApplewine I agree with you in principle. One problem in practice is that most employees probably do a similar quantity of work. Therefore the addition of softer skills makes more of a significant difference. This is if all other things being equal, e.g. - similar competence.
😂😂😂😂 too late
@@morsmagne I think soft skills is being used to mean psychological and social manipulation. My personality values objectivity and justice.
No, no. You leave immediatly and never return. This video explains exactly why woman are paid less.

Bullshit flag lol. In the real world, it's whoever had the connections or nepotism advantage.
