- How does it feel to step out of an air cooled Porsche 964 and into a water cooled Porsche 991? I finally got the chance to take my daily driver Porsche 911 into the hills to answer a simple question - is a modern Porsche fun?
Agreed. I love my 991.1 C2S. I'll never sell it. I think you're right, people forget about the Carreras, and I do think the 991.1 S model is seriously underrated as people always seems to talk about the GT models. But in my opinion, that 3.8l engine is a masterpiece and the car is plenty fast enough. For the roads here in the UK, almost too fast.
Spot on. Glorious engine!! And while I’d love to experience a GT3 revving to 9,000 the S still delivers an intoxicating blend of performance and excitement.
I got a 996 and everytime I drive I feel so blessed and Im filled with gratitude towards life.
It is really a battery charger to me. I forget all the troubles, pressures, worries and I just concentrate on driving and when I get back I feel energized and self-confident - and I know what to do.
Spot on! Couldn't have said it better myself.
Great Video Andy...you hit the nail on the head about all Porsche’s being special to drive!
Thanks very much Andrew. I’ve been lucky enough to drive a lot of these cars lately. There’s something special with each and every one of them.
Those last twenty seconds of you just carving your way through that road... That's where it's at! Like you said, no matter what generation of Porsche you have, we're all SO freaking lucky to be able to drive these amazing machines! Thanks for sharing your 991 with us! Can't wait to see more :-)
Hey thanks very much for the comment! I agree. Always amazes me the people who buy these cars and don’t drive them. Tends to happen more the the special ones I guess. But these cars are made to be enjoyed on the road.
I bought this car last year . Absolutely a fun car. Love driving it only for a few hours week . Such a treat
Yep, they really do everything just so well. Glad to hear you're enjoying yours!
Great video and I agree with your feedback on the car. I purchased my first Porsche last summer a 991.1 C2S and think they are a great value although prices are up right now. A lot of car for $60-$70k. Also went with the PDK over the manual, never thought I would love an automatic transmission so much.
Spot on! Love my manual but the PDK is great fun and so damn good!
💯 Agree...love my 991s, and on real roads it keeps up with GT3s just fine. Hopefully have it for 200k miles and leave it to my kids someday
That's brilliant! Love the idea of a car staying in the family and delivering endless miles of smiles!
True! I bought a 996.2 GT3 a year ago. What a blast. Keeps you smiling all the time while driving 🙌👌
Oh yeah what a car! Keep driving and keep that smile going.
997.2 Carrera is still king. NA with hydraulic steering, glorious suspension and response, without the techno junk and emissions compliant nonsense of the later generations. A proper driver's car when all's said and done.
Yes there’s much to be said for the 997.2. Plenty of refinement but old school drivability and size.
Agreed. We are so lucky and they are all so amazing. Thank you Porsche!
Haha. Thank you Porsche is spot on!
I had my '14 991.1 c2s since 2015 and still to this day it feels like the day one. It's my weekend car and it makes me look forward to the weekends which can't come fast enough.
I think you've just swung it for me, I've been flip flopping between the 911 and AMG GTS, this year has been a bummer and driving my mint M100 Elan or 370z roadster (will never sell either) has been a saviour, your enthusiasm is infectious, thanks 👍
Great to hear Robert! Have to agree with you - driving has been the one saving grace this year. Even when we were in full lock down here I was extremely lucky in that I had twisties within the 5km radius of my house. Getting in the car is fantastic forced meditation for me. Keep me posted on your final decision!
Great vid. Especially the commentary about the GT3 fascination vs the very capable Carreras.
Hey thanks so much for the comment. I should say I love Porsche’s GT products as much as anyone but boy, these modern day Carreras are such incredible cars!
991s is a very capable car and I use it for driving the back roads on sundays. When pushed hard through corners at 50 to 90mph it slides but stays well in control using just the throttle and the sound is incredible with the loud sport exhaust burbling each time you reduce the throttle.
Absolutely Paul! Love it when pushing the 991 hard.
Great video and it’s good to see the local Melbourne scenery. I drove a 991.2 GTS earlier this year, crazy fast but it can’t top the .1 NA engine note!
Look forward to checking out your other vids. Keep it up mate.
Yeah those 991.2's are lovely and I love the torque of the turbo engines but gotta love NA! Glad you recognised some of the roads too!
I absolutely agree with your summation at 7:30 of how the mid-range Porsches are underappreciated. I have a Rhodium Silver, 2014 C2S, PDK, and it is absolutely wonderful...and incredibly capable on the road...but I do find myself thinking about a GTS or a GT3. I know that is the effect of hearing the online community rave about how good these cars are at 'the next level up'. I am also pretty sure that if I move to a GT3, there will be the same feeling that I have to move to a GT3 RS. I'm going to make a real effort to focus on maintaining the hell out of what I already have and resist the urge to play the upgrade game. Still keeping my eye open for a 991.1 GTS, so I guess that makes me a bit of a hypocrite (at least a little). Really enjoyed watching this video. Drive safe and enjoy your 991 in 2021! Happy new year!!
Nothing hypocritical about that Jay. We’re always looking for the next thing. I think the GTS makes a lot of sense. And obviously a GT3 would be incredible. Enjoy the C2S but if you find yourself in a GTS the happy days!
Just discovered your channel and subscribed.. nice content Andy 👍🏼
993 driver here, looking forward to the day I can do a comparison with something newer ✌🏼
Hey Adam. Thanks so much for the feedback. Love the 993. Drove a friend’s earlier in the year (granted, it’s a particularly well sorted version) and absolutely loved it!
Hi Andy. Just subscribed to your channel after listing to James (of Auto Amateur) recent podcast chatting to you. Doing some cool videos so keep up the great work- best of luck to you. From Pete here in Perth WA - a 981 Cayman owner.
Pete thanks so much for subscribing! I really enjoyed chatting with James. Such a great guy. How long have you had your 981? I’ve driven a few and love them!
Great video, great review man.. I loved how you touched on the fact that no matter WHAT Porsche you drive, it’s still a Porsche a marvel of a machine, and in essence really one of the purest sports cars ever made!
So true! In recent times in drives with friends, we’ve been swapping keys and experiencing each other’s cars. I find something to love in every one of them!
Water holder above the glove box, use the little arrows next to the tuning knob to move the tracks forward and back
Thanks James. Certainly know about the cup holders. They work well for coffee but for a bottle of water, not so great. But thanks for the heads up with the little arrows!
Honest review of a great car. You are dead right in the fact that people focus on the halo GT models more yet the regular models are great in their own right and offer plenty of performance for fun daily use. Mind you, I wouldn't say no to a GT3RS. I have the same 991.1 S with the Power Pack upgrade which gives extra torque, PSE and PDCC. The PDCC transforms cornering speed. Its unreal!
Your car sounds fantastic! Just after i bought mine, one became available with the Power Pack for about the same money. Was gutted to have missed that one!
@@lastrasp thanks, yes i'm really pleased with it. Like a GTS without the center lock wheels, which look cool but could be a pain to change and the weird interior..
Well congrats to you. Hope you enjoy it (and drive it!)
Great content.... re : the bluetooth use, if you connect the phone to the car with a cable via the usb in the glovebox then you have full control of your music on steering column stalk and touch screen.
Oh I’ve only connected via Bluetooth. Okay, definitely need to try with the glovebox usb. Thanks for the tip!
My pcm allows me to change track via Bluetooth connection I use it for streaming services and online radio too. This may have been an option now I think about it.
Great video. I haven’t driven a 991 but need to. And what’s up with your comments about not putting an exhaust mod on a daily? We need louder exhausts on all of our Porsches! 😉
Keep up the good work.
😂 yes you may be right. To be honest I was pretty happy with it until I drove with a friend who has a 981 Boxster S and the sound coming out of that thing (stock PSE) was just killer. Made mine sound like a Camry!
Last Rasp I don’t know enough about the 991 and available exhaust options to speak to it but the Fister stage 2 on my 993 is excellent and the Miltek on my 997.1 turbo is also good...but not as mean sounding as the Fister.
I have a “custom” exhaust job on my 86 which I have mixed emotions about. Gonna do a review on it soon.
Mod it brother...you won’t regret! 😄
@@Rennthusiast Got a Fister on my 964. Love it. Love dealing with Darin too - great products, great communication and just a great dude.
Just found your channel this morning when I saw the beautiful orange 1971 911T targa video. So far so good....really enjoy your videos and find your narrations and video graphics very good!!!
Glad you found the channel! Thanks so much for the feedback - I’m trying keep improving the quality of my content so it’s nice to get the encouragement.
That image of the 991 behind you at the beginning of the video is just amazing looking. Black car with silver wheels is the best combination to me and at that angle. If I'm not mistaken, the 991.1 is the only 911 with the rear vents sticking out a little bit looking like scales from the side. 1:34 - it's awesome.
Absolutely agree that black with silver wheels is a classic combo. It always works. And yes the deck lid grille on a 991.1 has such a good look. First time I ever saw a 991.1 on the road was from the rear and I just remember thinking it looked amazing.
Thanks so much for the comment. 👍🏼👍🏼
@@lastrasp Sorry for such late reply but on August last year, I finally bought a red C4S. I decided which ever comes first, a red one or a black one and it doesn't matter whether it's S or S4. A red S4 came up and the price was quite reasonable. It has about 65K on the clock but it was in such good shape I just can't resist. I'm enjoying it very much now. Thx partly to your video. Cheers.
Nice car love my 991.1 c2s all the best from Scotland 👍
They're such a fantastic car. Thanks so much for the comment!
@@lastrasp seems we on the same page here. my C2S is Nov 2013 car 47000 miles had it 2 years now. Changed the tyres to Michelin PS4s makes such a difference. difficult to get the right spec but all in all happy with what I have. Keep churning the videos mate. 👍
@@chris-eccohealthcare I find it very hard to go past the PS4S now. Such a great tyre all round. Sounds like you're enjoying the car which is what it's all about! I'll keep churning if you keep watching.😉
Bawo o wowa 😂
Haha!
exactly....every Porsche gives you a special driving experience in its own way....the model does not matter.
Spot on Uwe! I could not agree more. They’re just fantastic across the board and - as long as you have a well sorted car - are brilliant to drive.
Hello from Scotland, enjoyed the video contemplating one of these to replace the 981 and my daily at some point. Just subscribed and looking forward to more content 👍
Hey from Australia! Would be a good choice as a replacement for the 981 (although if I didn’t have to daily this car, I’d have chosen a 981 instead). Thanks so much for subscribing - new vids coming in the next week or so!
@@lastrasp hmmm interesting. 👍
I so agree with the steering wheel....changed mine out too for one with the paddles!
Makes a big difference, right!? So much better!
@@lastrasp Subscribed mate!
@@jordank3141 Thanks so much Jordan!
Nice video. Your passion comes thru!
Hey John, thanks so much mate! What a nice comment!
I have had the cayman (08) and the 911 (997) but I need this one now. Can’t afford the Turbo so I need the CS 991, love the interior.
Great mix of cars! Yes the interior on the 991 really is so good. Definitely one of my favourite elements of the 991. Turbo is amazing but the S is plenty quick enough for me!
Great review! Can you give me some details on how you managed to change the multifunction steering wheel to the paddle shift? What happened to the multi function buttons?
Hey There! I do know of people who've made the change themselves but I had it done at my local Porsche dealer. It's not a cheap change because, as you point out, there's a bunch of functionality on the steering wheel that's lost with this change. Porsche added an extra stalk to include which includes those additional functions. To be honest, the only one I miss having on the wheel is volume control for the PCM.
Fantastic, next level edit 👌🏼
Thanks so much mate!
Great camera work and beautiful spec of a car. Totally agree with your steering wheel change! The 991.1 S will retain its value well in years to come as it's the last NA. Porsche were the first to do good automatic gear boxes so anything else around that era cannot really compare if you don't want a manual (hint hint C7 Corvette). While they are not cheap, they do fill a unique segment in the used market today.
Thanks very much for the feedback! Yeah they’re a beautiful car and as you say, last of the NA should go some way to maintaining the value.
Well said and couldn't agree with you more.
Cheers David. Appreciate the comment. Glad you agree!
If it wasn’t my daily I’d probably get an exhaust. True enthusiast there!
Haha. I shouldn’t complain - it sounds pretty sweet.
You should be able to advance tracks with a 991 and bluetooth. It works without issue with my iPhone on mine.
Hey Salvatore. Thanks for the comment. And yes, you’re right. I’ve had a few comments from people explaining how to do. It’s actually easy and obvious. Can’t believe I missed it 😬
@@lastrasp No problem. Just found the channel and sub'd. Great content. I have a similar garage: 991 & 993.
@@Motormouth2416 oh what a great combo!
This really makes me want a 911, good stuff! 👊
Thanks for the comment Mic. Nothing wrong with wanting a 911! 😉
@@lastrasp Absolutely! It would require parting with my E92 M3 but I think worth it 😁
@@micraw714 I do like the E92!
Absolutely fantastic review. I agree, with the limelight shown on Porsche GT/RS cars, one has the sadly wrong impression that’s where driving enjoyment lays, truth is they are all drivers cars, and usually the base Carreras are where the sweet spot lies due to ease of accessibility to the performance without trying to kill pedestrians, other roads users and including yourself whilst enjoying fine simple modest but mostly sublime performance, why cause each model is designed around the Carreras to start with.
Spot on Yemi! Couldn't agree more with everything you just said!
Great vid Andy, it’s snowy here in the Uk at the minute so no driving especially in lockdown! 😑 would be great to do a 964-991 comparison at some point. You touched on the history of the design and know they are world apart but would be a good one to show how much the beast has grown and the difference in driving experience 👍🏼 both awesome though 👌🏼
Hey Phil. Oh mate I can certainly empathise with the lockdown blues - less so the snow! Yeah I've definitely thought about that. The comparison is a tricky one, given the significant delta in performance between the two cars. No doubt the 991 is the easier car to drive fast in. Ultimately I think it comes down to a very subjective comparison that compares the feelings / vibe a car gives versus the out and out performance (and ultimately, which is more important - again, subjective...)
Stay safe mate.
Great video Andy👍🏻
Hey thanks so much!
Andy, what watch are you wearing? I love that design and the leather strap on it.
Another great video Andy. Do you have any plans to lower the suspension a tad?
This is a tricky one for me. The ride height and particularly the how far the wheels sit under the guards is something I’d love to change. Spacers are being fitted soon but you know what? With the height being what it is, it’s just a bit better driving around town, picking the kids up, driving over the myriad speed bumps near my house so I’ll probably leave it. Can’t say the handling suffers for it!
@@lastrasp oh that makes sense. It can get a bit difficult having to be careful driving around after it’s lowered.
Hi - I own a '13 991S with Pirelli OEM tires and am thinking of switching to the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. The Pirelli are fine in dry, but terrible in wet. Based on your experience, are the Michelin better?
Hey there Ian. I've not driven with the Pirelli's so can't provide any comparison there. But I can tell you that I'm running the PS4S on both of my 911's. I drive both of these cars in all weather conditions, including pouring rain and have been super impressed with the Michelin's wet weather performance. Can't say enough food things about these tyres.
Hi Ian I drive a 2013 991.1 C2S and I changed my Pirelli's I live in Scotland and the fields are green but the rain can be horrendous. I put PS4S on my 911 and it night and day. Hope this helps
@@chris-eccohealthcare Thanks!
Very nice.
Cheers Joaquin 👍🏼👍🏼
Started at Cardinia Res and went through Gembrook? I recognise the Gembrook roads
Well spotted!
So brilliant roads around there.
Last Rasp Gembrook Pakenham road is great or going from Pakenham Upper to Emerald is a great run too
@@CPiGTi indeed it is!
How do you know what level of safety there is as a UA-cam reviewer when cornering in a car on a public road? I mean a straight line is fairly safe, but you can get in trouble going too fast around a corner. I had much more fun in corners with my front wheel drive car than in my current higher HP rear wheel drive. It's a tricky balance.
I've had a lot of experience driving these Porsches now so I feel very comfortable driving them. Public roads aren't the place to really explore the limits of these cars so I make sure I don't get myself in trouble. When I drive other people's cars I'm even more cautious.
@@lastrasp that’s cool. I was just curious. I just discovered your channel and really enjoy it. Keep up the good work! Thank you.
Don’t need to watch the vid. I own a 991S with all the important options. I’ll tell you. There is no substitute.... oh and it’s fun as hell
Yep, gotta agree mate!
Can’t wait to get back out to some decent driving roads!
100%. Been way too long!!
Did you miss the multi functions at all on the steering wheel when you changed it?
I actually do sometimes. Particularly music volume. But well worth it for the experience of shifting with paddles versus the toggles.
@@lastrasp But it does look so much better. Did you get Porsche to do it? I'm in Melbourne and go the Porsche Brighton. I've also seen people put Macan or 991.2 wheels on but it looks like a lot of work and I don't know who in Melbourne would do it.
@@_LeeTurner yeah PCM did it for me. People will do the 991.2 multi function wheel but the dealers will not. Because the 991.1 and .2 each have a different airbag, Porsche can’t fit the .2 wheel in a .1. They’ve not crash tested that car with that airbag. Things such as seatbelt pretensioners come into play and they can’t seem it safe. Hence I went the .1 wheel. It’s lovely anyway so I’m happy.
@@lastrasp what did it cost to do the ports wheel at PCM? I assume they could do it in a day. 😃👍
@@_LeeTurner Hey Lee. The install itself wasn't too expensive from memory. Bu9t I did have to buy the additional function stalks.
Have you found the cup holders yet? 😂
@@JakesPizza4000 yeah yeah. Everyone thinks I don’t know about the cup holders 😂. Like I say in the video, the cup holders are great. They’re just no good for a water bottle.
Great vid! I took my A110 out for a run up to Lake Mountain. Waved hello to those yellow recommended cornering speed signs. I’m not sure about your 911, but my A110 is definitely fun to drive. PS Where were you driving?
Oh the A110 would be fantastic up around Lake mountain. And yes, the 911 is definitely fun to drive! Did you head up from Marysville or do Reefton Spur? I drove Reefton this past week and it was so good!
@@lastrasp From Marysville. The roads there suit the A110. Power is less important. But I’m guessing the 911 is something else. Reefton Spur is next on my list now we are out of lockdown. I’m thinking about attending the Australian tarmac rally scheduled for 3-4th December, and that is one of the stages.
@@simonng2077 yes that rally looks great. But worth hitting up any weekend anyway. Cruise through Warburton, up Reefton then flow down into marysville for brekky 👌🏼
Cup holder is right next to you bud. Push the silver strip.
Thanks mate. Yeah of course! I know about the cup holders. Those cup holders are great. But they can’t hold a bottle of water when driving in the twisties.
Uhm put the bottle of water in the cupholder ? That’s what it’s made for Bro 😅 My cupholder works perfect and there is a nice „extra“ :
It’s right in front of the fan, so when you put your bottle there and it’s summer, the aircondition blows permanent cold air on the bottle so it’s always cooled 😉
That’s how my Porsche dealer introduced it to me when i picked up my car.
German engineering 😊
I hear you mate, I do. But for anything more than the smallest of water bottle, it just tips over. It’s fine when I’m cruising on freeways but once I’m in the twisties it’s entirely inadequate. Truth be told, it’s a small inconvenience in an otherwise amazing car.
@@lastrasp Well yeah if you „race“ it’s not the best thing, but enough if you just cruise and enjoy the sun ✌🏼😊
I definitely don’t race mate. 👍🏼
@@lastrasp If you have a track nearby, try it one day, it’s fun 😄
@@TheWasp550 Would love to!
Hey buddy , can I ask what the MAF for the 964 cost total installed .
Thanks in advance.
Depends where you are. If you have local distribution then purchase it through your local distributor. I always think that's the best option because it gives you someone to lean on if you ever have any problems with the product. Local distributor will be a able to give you a price. FVD US store lists the MAF for $1,749 USD. Fitting by my mechanic was able to be done in a little less than half a day, so if you're going to your local shop, I'd allow for that plus a bit more for labour.
Hi Mate, i have the exact same car with the multifunktion steering, question how do you now control the dashboard without the multifunktion? Thank you
When they install the Sport steering wheel, there's also an extra stalk that provides all the functionality. Works a treat.
Nice Daytona
Well spotted! Although not a Daytona. Heuer Autavia.
Serious question: How “fun” can a car really be on streets with the laws etc? Most of the driving here looks pretty boring 😂
I tend not to film on the more technical roads we drive as I'm talking to camera. But there are plenty of roads where you can push these cars within (or around) the speed limits. While we have very strict road laws here, there are a surprising number of roads that are extremely twisty, largely deserted and with high speed limits. True, you'll get the best sense on track but in the hills is where I do most of my driving.
Too funny I have a 964 and 991 .. small world
Good to hear I’m not the only crazy one out there! It’s a great combination of classic and modern though right!?

There's cup holders and a way to song control thought stereo system . Learn ur car buddy
Thanks Eric. Like I mentioned in the in the video, there are really good cup holders. But they're not able to carry a bottle of water. But yes, as others have pointed out, there's a simple way to skip tracks. Thanks for your comment.
Um.. did you say there aren’t any cup holders or did I miss hear you? If you did, look again. It’s German engineering at its best.
Misheard. I mention that there are cup holders - great cup holders actually. Love the way they hide away. But there's nowhere that'll hold a something like a water bottle. Cup holders are all good 😉
@@lastrasp yeah you are right. Larger bottles won’t fit, but then larger bottles belong in a F150 Raptor more than in a nimble 911 ;)
@@fieramente unless you're driving in the twisties all day during the Australian summer... 😉
@@lastrasp ok fair enough! Where I live I get all the water I need through my coffee :) Heat is something exotic, unless it radiates from my tires when I get out of the car.

No doubt that the analogue feeling of old cars can't be matched by the newer stuff but there's some benefits to the modern stuff just the same.
@@lastrasp only security, and it's the most important thing after all but...
Horses for courses William. I have to say that, while my 964 is the car I’ll turn to most often when I’m heading for the hills, there are times / roads where power, grip and control of a modern 911 provides a sensational experience.
@@lastrasp I understand your point, but in 2021, with speed legislation I think there is no place for such fastest cars. I mean, where is it possible to truly enjoy the power of a 991 or 992 carrera (only talking about carrera!).
I understand your point - you definitely can't wind these things out to their full potential in terms of top speed on the street. But you can definitely enjoy them on a twisty road. It's not an either / or for me. I prefer my old air cooled but find a different (but still exceptional) level of fun can be had in the newer stuff.
