  • In this video, Dominican twin sisters Sol and Luna react to Philippine's drama Maria Clara At Ibarra: Klay travels back in time! (Full Episode 2 with English Subtitles).
    Klay (Barbie Forteza) was baffled when she woke up in a different location after reading the book given to her by her professor. She'll be even more surprised to discover that the people she's with are characters from the book she's reading.

    The Chinese features you were asking about is probably from the mixing of races. Chinese traders have always been visiting the Philippine shores even before the Spanish colonization. 😊

    The characters in the past speak old Tagalog (they use deep words ) ..while Klay speaks in modern Tagalog..that's the people there, says "I don't understand what you are saying". It's quite saddening that in the college curriculum Filipino subject is not available na. Usually, our Filipino subject have a mix of old and modern Tagalog

      ✌🏼😅 Yeah, the characters within the world, universe, context, and setting of the novel in this series or television series speak, communicate, and use an "older" Tagalog language, aside from Early Modern to Modern Spanish language and some Ecclesiastical Latin language, but more precisely and appropriately, they use, communicate, and speak Classical Tagalog language instead of Old Tagalog language.
      Old Tagalog language is the phase or stage of the Tagalog language before the year 1565 or c. 16th Century, or before when the Spanish or Spaniard colonizers, colonialists, occupiers, and imperialists started to colonize and occupy continously the Philippine islands or archipelago, or during the ancient to classical and/or classical, pre-colonial, pre-Western, pre-Westernized, pre-European, or pre-Hispanic history of the Philippines, or even before it too.
      Classical Tagalog is the phase or stage of the Tagalog language from or between and around after 1565 or c. 16th Century to around after 1898 or c. 19th Century to early 20th Century, or when the Spanish or Spaniard colonizers, colonialists, occupiers, and imperialists colonized and occupied the Philippine islands or archipelago.
      Old Tagalog doesn't have yet any Spanish, Nahuatl, Mozarabic, Latin, Greek, and/or other Western or American and European loan words, borrowed words, adopted words, adapted words, indigenized words, and/or localized words brought and influenced by Spanish and other Western or American and European languages until around 1565 or c. 16th Century when it linguistically transitions into Classical Tagalog, while Classical Tagalog does (but excluding the later linguistic or language influences and loan words, borrowed words, adopted words, adapted words, indigenized words, and/or localized words brought and influenced by foreign languages such as or like English and other Western or American and European languages, other Asian languages like Japanese and Korean, among others, and also languages in, of, and from the Philippines).
      Modern Tagalog language, on the other hand, is the present and current phase or stage of the Tagalog language from around after 1898 or c. 19th Century to early 20th Century up to the present and current time. It now has and has more linguistic or language influences and loan words, borrowed words, adopted words, adapted words, indigenized words, and/or localized words from English, Japanese, Korean, other foreign languages, whether Western or not, American or not, European or not, Asian or not, etc., and also from the other languages in, of, and from the Philippines, especially via or through its present and current national, official, codified, national lingua franca, and standard or standardized form, version, variation, variety, variant, or dialect of Filipino.

    Dr. Jose P. Rizal's top one favorite dish was tinola.
    Aside from tinola, he also eats pancit (found in Chapter 25: Laughter and Tears of 2nd novel El Filibusterismo), champorado (when he was a little boy), monggo soup, foie gras (European food when he was in Paris, France and during his exile in Dapitan now Dapitan City, Zamboanga Del Norte, Philippines), tuyo (dried fish) and others.

    Secretly watching this while at work. Also, if a nun came running towards me like that, I would panic too. i think it's cause of my obsession with horror movies like the Conjuring and The Nun 😅 the series definitely gets better as each episode progresses.
    Also, I read the whole Noli and El Filibusterismo out of curiosity...to be honest, it was hard for me to fully understand everything cause of the old language they used back then😂

    • @artesiningart4961
      @artesiningart4961 Рік тому +1

      ✌🏼😅 What do you mean pô by or with "it was hard for me to fully understand everything cause of the old language they used back then"? What do you also mean pô by or with "older language"?
      Have you read Noli Me Tángere and El filibusterismo pô in its original Spanish language version by or from Dr. Jose P. Rizal, in other Spanish language versions, in a version or translation in one of the other languages in, of, and from the Philippines or in one of the other foreign languages, or just in the literary Filipino language version or translation, literary Pilipino language version or translation, and/or literary Tagalog language version or translation, just with literary Filipino, Pilipino, or Tagalog words, which you might have read, received, thought, perceived, interpreted, and/or took as "old language" just because the language, variant, variety, variation, version, register, style, form, or language level is in "deeper", "purer", "maybe or probably lengthier or longer", "seemingly older", "seemingly less or even not modern", straight, and literary Filipino, Pilipino, and/or Tagalog than or compared to the more casual, conversational, familiar, common, daily, vernacular, colloquial, and slang Filipino and/or Tagalog, or even Taglish and/or Englog language code-switchings and/or code-mixings?

    • @MADesigns_
      @MADesigns_ Рік тому +1

      @@artesiningart4961 Hi po, I have one of the few the English translation of Noli because I couldn’t get a hold of the Tagalog version here in Canada. I found out later on that the version I got wasn’t the most popular translations because it used a lot of “deep” English words that is not often used, and they forgot to translate some of the Spanish words that I'm not familiar with. It also might be because a lot of the sentences seemed to have been translated literally and some of the sentences doesn’t make sense which loses it’s meaning from the original. I’m planning to buy the other English translated version of Noli with the more popular reviews, even though it’s more expensive. It’s okay because it’s an important part of Philippine history to know. El Filibusterismo was a lot easier for me to understand, but it was translated by a different author.
      Also, I can relate to Klay because half way through the book, I lost interest but it was only because of the way the book was translated 😅 I'm going to get the other English version.

    The Filipino is basically of Malay stock with a sprinkling of Chinese, American, Spanish.
    Before the Spanish came there were already communities that had Chinese immigrants because they were trading ports. So it is but natural that some Filipinos will have Chinese blood in them. The Chinese way of family structure also heavily influenced the traditional Filipino family structure. The eldest son is called Kuya ("Ko-ya" in Fukien "Ku-ye" in mandarin).

    Philippines was a very formal society back then. It's nice that the entire show utilizes the high level/ formal way of speaking Tagalog. Insulares, peninsulares, illustrados, and landed gentries. Nicer is the fact that the script combines it with the modern way of speaking Tagalog.

    *This series or television series:*
    Whether you already read, reread, know, studied, re-studied, learned, relearned, finished, or even mastered the novels themselves, not even a lot of times, no matter for how many times, you still need to expect the unexpected.
    Each and every week night's episodes is always unpredictable.
    You don't exactly know which or what chapter/s will be in each episode, which or what chapter/s will be next or in the next or succeeding episode/s or week/s of episodes, which or what chapter/s or scene/s from the novel will be summarized, shortened or cut, skipped, lengthened or extended, expanded, slightly tweaked, slightly altered, slightly changed, differently and unpredictably written, or which or what chapters or scenes from the novel stayed, are remained, or are maintained, like, the same, similar to or with, almost like/the same/similar to or with, almost exactly like/the same/similar to or with, or exactly like/the same/similar to or with how they happened and how they were narrated, written, and presented in the novel.
    It's fun and exciting for both those who already read,, reread, know, studied, re-studied, learned, relearned, finished, or even mastered the novels themselves, and for those who do not, who do not yet, or even those who do not at all.
    I am not saying not to nor continue to read, study, learn, or finish the novels though, or at least the Noli Me Tángere, for now, though. Please do or continue if you personally and individually want and like, and you'll appreciate, value, and love this series or television series more, even more, or way more, and better, especially all of the people on-screen and behind this series or television series.

    As a speaker of Cebuano (which has more etymologically Spanish words and even cognate Spanish words than Filipino/Tagalog), it's wild how many Spanish words in the show are still actually used to this day albeit not too frequently. Also, Pico y Pala, means a Pick and a Shovel. Must be that the meal was originally served to or was what laborers can afford. Interesting! I learn a lot watching your commentaries.

    People in the Philippines during the Spanish period were classified into 4 classes: the Peninsulares (Spaniards born in Spain), the Insulares or Filipinos (Spaniards born in the Philippines), Mestizos (mixed Spanish, Chinese and native) and the Indios (native population). The Peninsulares and Insulares have caucasian looking features, the Mestizos has obviously mixed features similar to the mestizos in Mexico while the Indios have the austronesian features. Furthermore, The Mestizo class is subdivided into two: the Spanish Mestizo and the Chinese Mestizo or what the novel referred to as Sangleys. Spanish Mestizos are mostly engaged in politics and government while Sangleys are more interested in trade & commerce.

    most of modern filipinos now have chinese facial features
    filipinos are often called "chinese - looking people with spanish names"
    the native filipinos interbred with chinese people but kept the spanish surnames thats why
    if u see a chinese-looking person with last names like Reyes, DelaCruz, or Santos, that's 90% a filipino person.
    decades and a century ago, filipinos looks so much like Spain-spanish, but it eventually receded when the Spanish left Philippines and the native filipinos intrebred with East Asians(Chinese, Japanese and Koreans).
    So nowadays, a typical feature of a Filipino girl is a "chinita". Being a chinita is considered pretty here in Philippines.

    I had to say you guys don’t know, but when the people from the 1800s speaks either they speak Spanish or Tagalog. When they speak Tagalog they speak pure somewhat old Tagalog. Which mostly we don’t use now, it’s like talking Shakespeare in England now, vs modern English, clai speaks in really modern Tagalog that’s why they can’t understand most of her words

    • @artesiningart4961
      @artesiningart4961 Рік тому

    • @artesiningart4961
      @artesiningart4961 Рік тому

      ✌🏼😅 We can or may also argue that Klay is speaking in Filipino (one of the two official, and the codified, national lingua franca, and standard or standardized, national language of the Philippines) and not just Modern Tagalog, which (Filipino) is also de facto, still, and just mostly or almost entirely based of or from the general Modern Tagalog dialect of Manila, Metropolitan Manila Area, Metro Manila, the National Capital Region, or NCR, promoted nationwide and worldwide through our national mass media, compulsory K-12 basic education's Filipino subjects & courses and Filipino as language of instruction in some few other subjects & courses, national literature, national pop media, entertainment, and culture, and national music and its genres, subgenres, and styles like OPM, among others.

    I have Spanish and Chinese heritage on my maternal side.. My great granny was Spanish mestiza and my grandpa was born in China but acquired a Filipino citizenship. There are also Spanish-Chinese, Filipino-Japanese, Filipino-American, Filipino-Indians, and everyone else in between. I have an aunt whose father was Japanese and was a soldier disguised as farmer migrant before the Japanese invasion. We have Amerasians from the time of American occupation in 1898 to the time they dismantled their US bases in the 1990s from American soldiers who just abandoned their children. 😔😪. As a result of our colonial past, Filipinos are more open-minded terms of marrying another race.

    Here are the metaphors/meanings behind the 'Tinola' parts being served to the characters:
    [I solely based this knowledge from what i've learned in 9th grade (pre-pandemic)]
    Crisostomo Ibarra got the breast part [Tagalog: Pitso] which symbolizes wit and knowledge. Someone who got 'brains', hence getting the juicest (meatiest) part.
    [If I'm not mistaken, in the novel, Padre Sybila also got the same part Crisostomo have gotten]
    For the other characters they got Leg/Thigh part which isn't really significant. That part was served to the 'normal' characters.
    As for Padre Damaso, he got the neck and the wing. Neck symbolizes power over someone [Tagalog: Hawak sa leeg - English: Holds someone by the neck (direct translation)] which means he can easily manipulate things around by using dominance/force. Wings symbolizes pride. [Tagalog: mataas ang tingin sa sarili - English: Above all people; narcissistic]
