I've heard that as well. I'm deeply saddened but not entirely surprised Wheein chose not to re-sign. The kpop lifestyle hasn't always been easy for her as she's known to have stress & anxiety issues.

From what I understand about this situation is that Wheein would still participate in group activities (and it sounds like there is a written document which imo means we can expect MAMAMOO content and not a long hiatus. When this agreement comes to an end in 2023, this agreement would be up for renegotiation - a lot of people seem to think this means she will leave, but it's not like once groups resign they are signed forever) - the same constraints to a group's activities should still apply like member scheduling. Wheein, however, is free to sign with another agency for her solo activities, so wherever she decides to go and what she wants to do, she could be more active or less active - but for sure the future will cater more towards her musical preference and her overall image as an artist, celebrity, individual.
Today RBW announced Wheein has not renewed her contract but will stay in Mamamoo activities till December 2023 under a mutual agreement. You should watch a live performance of this song.

AND IT WAS WHEEIN AND HWASA WHO SANG AT THE END TOO! Like I'm sure every Moomoo's who had time to watch their guestings and interviews know about Wheein and Hwasa's journey as childhood bestfriends who had the same dream of being a kpop artists, whom auditioned together in Seoul, far away from their families, and luckily both became part of Mamamoo. Like, damn that hit hard. That was the most tearjerking part for me, next was the last chorus where Hwasa belted without musical support.
Years later, this still makes me get tears. When it first dropped I was SO SCARED this was going to be their goodbye song because of the timing; I HATE goodbyes so it made me get tears. Thinking about everything they went through to stay together as a group makes me get tears. Thinking about how close they HAD to become in order to stick together (even during times when they were PISSED OFF at each other, maybe even hated each other for a minute), just so they could carry that entire fledgling company...nobody in the Entertainment Industry has worked any harder than these four ladies. That makes me get tears. They bonded over that sort of hard work. They did it all together. They became family to each other. That makes me get tears. This song is just SO LOADED. And it was a ballad. Damn. So all of that put together, I still cry watching the original and watching reactions to it. I am re-visiting your reaction here just because you are so open about your love and respect for them as PEOPLE, not just as artists.

This might sound odd, but the fact that Wheein and Hwasa have been best friends and truly love each other since middle school really stands out as there being true good in the world for me.
Not that odd. I feel the same. Their continued friendship is great but that has been done before, we hear about life-long friends many times. But life-long friends who managed to get in the same group together? I don't know anybody else who has done that. If I find out it has been done before, that still won't make their relationship any less special. :)

You hear stuff that other reactors don’t notice and I love it when you point out those things. 👏🏼 Regarding Wheein / Mamamoo resigning with RBW - Hwasa, Solar and Byul’s renewed contract will most probably end by 2023 as well, but they can all still continue as “Mamamoo”. After 2023 they can renegotiate with RBW (together with Wheein too) and they can resign once more or continue on another agency and still promote as a group. We can’t tell for now if they will want to continue as a group after 2023 but I hope they do. If not, I’m positive their friendship will continue on forever and their music will always be in our hearts ❤️

In Korean music industry they established themselves as vocal powerhouses so early in their career that it just became a fact, that we will get what we expect of Mamamoo: quality, harmonies, musical excellence, emotional connection. And when they won their first round of promotionals against other K-pop groups - without any dancing, no lively, excitable grooves - it is testament to their power!

I wonder if because Egotistic, Gogobebe and Hip were so big that the Korean market weren't prepared for a ballad again. It's strange because they have had some big selling ballads - Starry Night was a huge hit (it and Decolcamanie are their biggest selling songs)

In regards to Hwasa's voice in Killing Voice that you mentioned, there is indeed some vocal backtrack that layers the girl's voices at certain points that caused "strangeness" you noticed. This is the norm in Kpop (though Mamamoo are obviously able to sing without it!), all groups that sing "live" (which are very few....) use backtrack to layer their vocals and create harmonies although sometimes it's so loud that it obscures their voices entirely. At that point are they even singing live? Anyway, compared to other groups, Mamamoo does this sparingly and in this new comeback, there is none at all! I hope you check out their live performance of this song, its fantastic!

Their live vocals for this song is even better than the studio version, like the case all the time. I SUGGEST YOU SEE THOSE LIVE PERFORMANCES. Many more live vocal harmonies. The Yoo Hee Yeol and the It's Live performances are the most impressive ones, I mean all the others are impressive on their own, but those are the higher tier ones.
Please check out some of Moonbyul's solo work! She has an incredible belt in her cover of 서툰 이별을 하려해 (just searching for covers by her works! She had done a lot of beautiful covers) and her solo album (Dark side of the moon) has a ton of really amazing songs that let her express her vocals more freely. That's actually the length of time the other three had renewed for (standard kpop renewal seems to be for 2 years) and then they can decide to renew again or do something else
Fun recording note from the latest MMMTV episode was that in the ending harmony, Hwasa recorded hers first and made the phrasing choices on the final Where Are We Now. This was planned or discussed before hand, so when Wheein recorded her vocals she joked about how she had to try and match her, guessing when Hwasa was going to say we now after the pause.

Actually, all of four of them will have another decision to make about the same time. The others may have renewed with RBW but their renewal is 2-3 yrs. The only difference with Wheein is her solo stuff will no longer be with RBW. Let's hope all four of them will remain together as a group while still doing their solo stuff, be it with RBW or with a different company after Dec 2023

Their live vocals for this song is even better than the studio version, like the case all the time. I SUGGEST YOU SEE THOSE LIVE PERFORMANCES. Many more live vocal harmonies. The Yoo Hee Yeol and the It's Live performances are the most impressive ones, I mean all the others are impressive on their own, but those are the higher tier ones.

Please check out some of Moonbyul's solo work! She has an incredible belt in her cover of 서툰 이별을 하려해 (just searching for covers by her works! She had done a lot of beautiful covers) and her solo album (Dark side of the moon) has a ton of really amazing songs that let her express her vocals more freely. I think you'd have a blast especially watching her MVs, she's so creative and expressive with her singing and dancing :)

That's actually the length of time the other three had renewed for (standard kpop renewal seems to be for 2 years) and then they can decide to renew again or do something else
Fun recording note from the latest MMMTV episode was that in the ending harmony, Hwasa recorded hers first and made the phrasing choices on the final Where Are We Now. This was planned or discussed before hand, so when Wheein recorded her vocals she joked about how she had to try and match her, guessing when Hwasa was going to say we now after the pause.

Its sad wheein will leaves Mamamoo soon at the end 2023 so lets appreciate them as long as they are together.
Actually, all of four of them will have another decision to make about the same time. The others may have renewed with RBW but their renewal is 2-3 yrs. The only difference with Wheein is her solo stuff will no longer be with RBW. Let's hope all four of them will remain together as a group while still doing their solo stuff, be it with RBW or with a different company after Dec 2023
