    Btw I can related with your "meeting friends" situation. It not only takes your mind off of thinking about "your new camera", it shows you what is really important to you and what you enjoy. Time with friends, yourself or in nature. :D The bike, the bag, the shoes are tools to enable you to enjoy those moments. And I bet you will enjoy a foto even taken with a bad camera because you remember the nice moment... ;)

    Your cheerful neuroticism about this really resonates with me.😆I really like that you talk about the *uncertainty* about how you will use the camera. Often we just don't know how we new items, hobbies and interests will fit into our life. We just don't know.

    I relate to this video SO MUCH! Many people just hear “I want it, I plan to use it this way, I can afford it” and just say “buy it!” without realizing that I really want * the idea I have in my mind of it * which is not always the reality. I imagine I will carry it every day, but if I look deeply I realize I won’t, and then I’ll be frustrated with myself and disappointed, and it’s harder to let go of something you own that doesn’t quite work how you imagined than just to not buy it at all. Bags and especially travel items are my weakness and I don’t even travel often! I hope you are enjoying the camera.

    I go through the same sort of deliberations before making a significant purchase. In my case it's mostly art gear. But I'm glad you got the camera because it's not just a gadget, it's your self-expression and your creativity, it's a form of interface with the world.

    I've realised recently that, potentially as a part of my neurodivergence, I go through cycles/phases of being particularly obsessed with certain items, hobbies etc. I've accepted that my interests are cyclical, but I've realised I need to be careful not to spend too much when I'm really into something because the interest will likely die in a couple weeks. Right now, its embroidery. I spent £15 on embroidery threads last week, and that's it! which I'm happy with. This is what your camera story made me think of. I think taking time to consider purchases usually leads to better decisions, and yes also spending time on life and experiences rather than objects!

      Hi! Can you tell me more about this? I also go through cycles/phases of being particularly obsessed with certain items (I never buy them but it consumes my thoughts) and have been trying to figure out whether I can stop it or if I should accept it.

    • @sjwells04
      @sjwells04 2 місяці тому

      @@andrearodriguez6227 hey! It’s not an official thing and I’m no expert haha I’ve just realised I become super focused on certain things for a few weeks and get loads of dopamine from them. This can include shows, hobbies, researching something, films, a particular actor, and yes items of clothing I want to buy etc. I then feel bad when the interest dies and i no longer really care, especially if I’ve spent a lot of money. I think the only way forward for me at least is to accept it but limit my spending and have awareness that this fixation will likely pass. It’s okay to admire things without buying them.

    • @sjwells04
      @sjwells04 2 місяці тому +1

      @@andrearodriguez6227 hey, I don’t think it’s something you can necessarily stop, but accepting that your fixations are fleeting helps to regulate your consumption, and I’ve learned to just admire things instead of buying them ❤

    Lia, I go through exactly that sort of thinking whenever I get a notion to get a new piece of tech...... Obviously I rarely NEED it, but gosh sometimes I really really want it. It sort of depends how often it returns to my mind and for how long. Right now..... an iPad....... I have a laptop, I have a phone.... so although I really really want it, I certainly don't need it

  • @thomasmann6416

    I knew it... Ricoh. ;)
    I had the same struggle with buying my new backpack. I was looking for one bag that does it all (nearly impossible) but finally I bought it... today! It is going to replace two other bags.
    I went through all the same phase like you did. At some point it was really annoying to be honest and I think we might overthink it a little bit and end up moving in circles... at least I felt like that.
    I guess we need to accept that we can not "control and foresee" everything... So lets see how our new things turn out... ;)
    Btw... I am saving for a Ricoh or Fujifilm right now haha :)

    • @ecofriendlia
      @ecofriendlia  2 місяці тому +3

      I absolutely get what you mean! And I hope the bag is as perfect as you imagined! Because that's it, we can't control everything and never know if we are going to use our things as much as we promise ourselves when we want to buy them. So far I really like the camera and I hope you will too! (Or my fuji for the matter, I love both, but I have the xt4 not one of the compact ones 😊)

    Maybe a good idea is to share the purchase of a camera with someone else and share the belonging. One takes it when he goes in vacation. An other day the other takes it for an important event etc… 😊

    I struggle so much with decision making. I just go round and around. Drives me crazy. My mom said I've always been like this. It's hard to know what to do when we really want something and then have to justify getting it financially, use and value to us. I'm in this position with replacing my current worn out clothing. I want to purchase more comfortable natural fabric clothing because I've had surgeries and most materials hurt my skin. The thing is the clothing I want it much more expensive than I'm used to spending so they are an investment but will be more comfortable and last longer hopefully. Wow! It seems to make sense to do it but I still don't know. ❤

    Not that you asked for my .02 . . . but . . . I'm a full-time professional photographer since 2005. I shoot about 100 sessions a year. Traveled Japan for 2 weeks last year with a single Osprey Fairview bag (ONLY). 2 OLD Canon 5D camera bodies, 4 Canon L lenses (16-35, 50, 24-70, 70-200) and as many other clothes as I could fit (didn't take my laptop . . . edited when I got back home). I had everything I needed. Yes, it weighed a ton. I 100% prioritize taking good equipment with me. Doing anything without my gear is not worth doing. I would cry if I had to live with something less. FYI, same 2 camera bodies for the last 10 years (I've owned a total of 7 of the same over the last 2 years). Took 12,000 frames during the trip. (I only buy a piece of gear if it MAKES me money and earns itself back in 6 months.) But don't think I haven't struggled all the same . . . 😉

    Hi Lia I see where you are coming from and I am all for spending money responsibly but obsessing too much on a purchase is not good either. There will be always a reason not to buy something, there will be always something better you can do with that money but with this concept you will never buy anything again and you will miss out on the little joys of life. Not everything has to be always practical, useful and needed. You can also buy something because it makes you happy, nothing wrong with that. Don’t be too hard on yourself, if you want the camera, buy it and enjoy it. Sending you hugs. 🤗

    I know EXACTLY what you've been going through. I have the same "problem" with my camera, and have been thinking about a smaller one as well for the same reasons. However, I decided not to because before buying the camera that I own now, I've searched my ass off to find the perfect all-round camera that was relatively small for having interchangeable lenses (I also obsessively research specs and alternatives for months on end, lol), so I couldn't justify another smaller camera, especially since I also have a very good smartphone. I've decided that I'm going to try to find (or make, with paracord) a smaller lightweight strap because the camera really isn't that big without the bulky strap that I have now, so I'm trying to actively change my perception on it because in my case, I've been overexaggerating.
    However, it was a good exercise for me too to appreciate what I already have and to find out if I'm just trying to convince myself that I want something shiny and new or if I really needed something. In my case, it was the first one, but you probably own a decently big camera compared to me, so I totally understand your choice too! And I loved your photos by the way :) Have fun with the other 8994+ pictures!

    i'm not a minimalist, but striving to own as little "unnecessary" things as possible. i also try to apply, esp on clothes, if sth comes into my housez sth else has to go. recently, i bought a pair of barefoot shoes of a brand i trust and like, and sold a pair of palladium shoes that didn't fit my feet (my feet resemble duck feet - they flare out!😂) and were quite uncomfortable for that reason. i only held onto them bc i liked how they looked.

    Lia I think you are overthinking it. If you want the camera get it. I thought minimalism was about buying not only the things you need but the things you love. I think minimalism is starting to be like a contest with a lot of people (who can have the least amount of stuff). You work hard. It is ok to buy something you really like.

    I obsess over each and every purchase I contemplate 😅 what I wonder is, why do you want to take those 8000 or whatever pictures? With a plan to then sit and look back through past moments at some point in the future? Or is this artistic expression? Personally, I find taking photos is kinda like clinging to the past, and while I like to have a few nice pictures of my children as they grow, things like scenery I really don’t feel the need to immortalise. Because there will always be more beautiful moments in nature to be experienced 💚

    I know closely these struggles before buying things. I am also a minimalist. It seems to me that the roots of such struggling lies in some kind of perfectionism, in an idealistic way of looking at ourselves from the side. Subconsciously, we try to be the best minimalist, the most rational, obeying the rules we made for us.
    My last obsession was a Klean Kanteen bottle. I really wanted it. I already had a bottle I bought last year. It was silicone collapsible Stojo bottle. But now I wanted an insulated one. Maybe it will sound stupid for you, because bottles are now on hype. But I really needed it. So I tried my best to choose the best suitable option for me. I had so many factors I needed to choose from sizes and the bottle itself, to colors and lids. I felt overwhelmed. And I also felt guilty for wanting it, because I already had another bottle. Eventually, I bought it. And now I enjoy it. I know I have two bottles, but they serve different purpose for me. One is lightweight and easy to carry, the other one keeps my drinks really hot or cold, so that's why it's kinda universal for all seasons.
    I know my life wouldn't be worse if I didn't buy it. The worse thing is overthinking. That's why I try to distract myself when I see I'm getting obsessed with something. And I also make a list of things that I talked myself of buying. Learned it from one UA-camr.
    I already know that I am a minimalist who tries to spend their money intentionally on good things. So no need to bother too much. Leave yourself some space and time to think but not too much.
    P.S. Congratulations for new camera. Hope you'll enjoy it.

    If you buy it: It has to serve a purpose. It has to be easy to maintain. & It has to last. These are my personal rules. I recently bought an $800 starter ebike (I've not spent that much money on myself in YEARS). Having said that, it was totally worth it :D I love it! It feels like luxury. Not for anyone else, mind you. For myself. For my health & for fun, simultaneously. Don't beat yourself up all the time. If you dont like it, you should be able to return it in a certain amount of time. Ask yourself, will I regret this later? .....You got this!
