  • In this video, I talk about the mouthpieces I've used on a Conn 12M Bari and why this particular model is so hard to find a mouthpiece for.
This is a link to my new favorite mouthpiece -

Really interesting video Bret! Thanks for the advise and comparisons. I think I’m the way forwards is definitely a long shank mouthpiece.

Interesting find and great big sound. I might try that too. That pickle barrel could very well be Lelandais or Riffault made. I do have these too and they do play very nice on the 12M. But my main piece on the 12M now is a metal Link. Works great and keeps perfectly in tune and plays very soft to really loud. On the other end of the spectrum I also use a Metalite M7 for even louder R&B stuff. Also perfectly in tune. It is also about embouchure ans airstream control.

You have one of the rare 12Ms that doesn’t play sharp with modern mouthpieces.

Do you use the same bari sax reeds on the Jared D? What reed do you prefer and do you use in the video?

Hey we should get together and go through mouthpieces! I’ve got the 12.5 neck for my conn. It’d be fun to try compare baritones and I’ll bring my bass up too!

Rubber Bergs are extremely long and will play well and in tune in a 12M. Same goes for, believe it or not, a current Meyer. Another good choice is Morgan who make extra long versions of all their bari mouthpieces to work on the old Conns.

Yes, Meyer HR mouthpieces work surprisingly well for me on vintage baritones (like Martins).

I play a Conn 12M. I feel like this a bit ridiculous- the idea that a horn shouldn't be played with certain mouthpieces. This may be your lack of experience playing on this specific horn and your embouchure. There's a lot of honking going on in this video rather than playing with any finesse, shows that you do not play these mouthpieces on a regular basis. Playing the same mouthpiece multiple times in a row makes a huge difference. I also wonder what the effects are if bassoon is your primary instrument and the one you have had the most instruction on. I have had a Bari instructor, who traveled internationally playing classical saxophone, teach me that a lot of playing is about your intention. Sounds like you just honk, as someone who was not trained in the saxophone may do, which is going to effect your opinion.

I will choose to interpret your comment as not being rude, but rather being insensitive or unknowing. You may not be aware, but 12Ms are notorious for playing sharp with modern mouthpieces. This is one of the reasons that MusicMedic offers a 12.5M neck that is significantly longer than the stock neck. This is due to how the horn was designed. It was built with a shorter truncation factor than Baris are today. The result of this is that most 12Ms (but not all), need to be matched with the mouthpiece more than other Baris. I simply can't put my modern mouthpiece on and play at A=440, the internal volume of the mouthpiece doesn't match what the horn requires. If you've had luck using a more modern mouthpiece on a 12M, wonderful, but this is far from the norm. I've known of many players who have either had to have the neck lengthened or have an additional length grafted on to their existing mouthpiece.

@@BretNewtonComposer also the 12m was designed in the late 20s and 30s and mouthpieces were larger
