  • Saxophone repairman Matt Stohrer of www.StohrerMusic.com does a shakycam style overview of the 1933 Conn 12M transitional baritone saxophone. (Seriously, sorry for the handheld-ness.) These horns are fabled for their beautiful tone and feared for the intense commitment required by their owners- which include Gerry Mulligan, who played a very early Transitional. See what it is that makes these horns special in this marathon 14-minute long edition of Repairman's Overview.

Lacquer wasn't a finish option until 1934/35?? Damn I had no idea. Your videos are awesome, I've been binge watching them since I found your channel last night! Thank you for the amazing content!

Thanks! I have a 1941 12M, so this was fascinating. I recently got a neck extension, which makes a big difference in the intonation.

Great video Matt! I have a 1932 Conn Bari Transitional and I actually learned a few things from your video. I'll keep watching!

There are many variations of both, so it completely depends. They are similar on the whole but quite distinct.

Excellent. Thanks for continuing to geek out in public over saxophones!!
I'm not a bari player, so that Eb trill tone hole configuration may be more common than I realize; otherwise the only other sax model I know of set up like that were the 1930's Martin "Handcraft" Imperial alto and tenor saxes.
Re early lacquer, it seems that Buescher first started lacquering their horns sometime late during the "New Aristocrat" model run - around about the same time you say Conn did.

Hi Matt. I have bought on ebay, a vintage c g conn bari sax, its serial number suggests it's a 1914 to 197 model, if my research is correct. however, the neck and neck socket are missing and the section to which the socket normally is attached, is squashed for now, making it all but impossible to get both inside and outside measurements and thus, for the tenon as well. Do you have any suggestions as to where i might be able to get these parts or if any other saxophones may have the same sizes. In fact, would you happen to know the sizes at all? Mark, Sydney.

How much better are the newer, (say 1935) Naked Lady 12 M's as far as intonation goes?
