    Just love this video Nick! I have only been collecting Hoya for the last two years. They are some of my favorite plants in my collection. I had a customer give me her 45 year old Hoya carnosa. She had it all wrapped up in a big bowl. When I unwound the tendrils the plant was 16 feet long. Needless to say I gave it a good haircut and created six or seven other plants from it. It is thrills me that the mother plant is that old

      @pattheplanter 2 роки тому +12

      _Hoya carnosa_ was introduced to Britain in 1802 and was available to buy (for $5 a plant) in the US by 1822*. Very few people ever grow _Hoya carnosa_ from seed. The grandmother of your cuttings could be very old indeed.
      * From William Prince of the Linnæan Botanic Garden at Flushing, Long Island, near New York. By 1827 you could buy a plant for only $2 from G. Thorburn & Son of 67 Liberty Street, New York.
      I only have _Hoya carnosa_ and _Hoya bella_ and I love them both so much.

      I started a plant collection after years of having one plant at a time and no green thumb. All because of videos just like this one. I keep coming back to Nick's videos because he is fun and has great plants. The Hoyas are my favorites. I have two different kinds. I have two cuttings that are growing for me really well

    I love my Hoya. They’re super addicting and definitely a good plant to have 50 of! I like that they’re flexible… they love light & humidity but they will do great in regular room conditions too. I really wish they didn’t attract mealies so much though 🤮

    First Hoya I got was the green carnosa and she’s so underrated! One of my top 2 plants I own she’s gone from 1 long stem to at least 15 stems now that some go right down to the floor. If you see one and don’t have one I highly recommend especially if you have the light

    Nice collection. You have a few I've never seen before. I also love the plain carnosa. I think most people who have hoyas already have it, so that might be why they're disappointed when they see that's the only kind at the store.

  • @MiniMuon

    I have a cat, so Hoya is a nice houseplant since most of them (?) are pet safe, at least my hoyas have teeth marks on their leaves and the cat keeps making more of them... I think around hoyas there is a lot of networking and somehow it's an very nice collectors dream as it has variety in species.

    Cute collection! Fingers crossed that now under growlight they will be not slow growers and in few moths time all of them will be bushy! :) I have few hoyas and I picked totally different ones! I have them under barrina t5 lights and they are booming with growth. Even carnosa compacta which is my slowest grower is working hard on new leaves on every vine. I got linearis, obovata, NGG, wayetii, sunrise, tricolor, compacta, crassiopetiolata splash, curtisi, macrophylla albomarginata, callistophylla, heuschkeliana variegata, sigilatis, caudata sumatra. I like to pick very dofferent leaves each time. Dying to acquire chunghungensis and endauensis and few more, polynuera broget and the one with giant flowers - macgillivrayi... I guess lovely hoyas are never ending. Love this species so much. Greetings from Poland

  • @RuubinSelena
    @RuubinSelena 2 роки тому

    I think you hit the nail on the head at 19:00, I think the Hoya needs more water because the roots can die back if they don't get enough water, the plant is trying to grow more roots to support itself instead of new leaves and the leaves it does have will die off naturally if the plants' roots start dying back.

    We ended up in some greenhouses on the campus of Univ of CA at Davis? I think it was, but they had plants we had never seen before. Especially hoya! Maybe you can find it on line. I think I took 300 pictures of their plants. You just never know what it is that gives different people joy and happiness, but this nice tour today was a much needed break from the coverage of the war in Ukraine. Have you ever grow any Agapetes? They are small and would give you some added color. When you run out of greenhouse space, you may have to move to Hawaii like we did where I actually have a few hoya growing on our fence along with Blue Jade vine,, Stephanotis and Passion flowers. Aloha

    LOVE HOYA!!!! Thank you for this awesome video Nick! Adding some species to my wishlist to get this spring! Are there some Hoyas that do better in brighter light than others? I don't have many but the one's I have I had to pull back from my un-obstructed SE windows because they were becoming really chlorotic. Not sure it it was just that species but if there are any that do well for you in windows I'd love to know which species those are. (and honestly any plant that's not a cactus/succulent that does well in bright light).

    I enjoyed your tour but if I could give some constructive criticism. I think issue is that you really underwater and have way too little light for your hoya. Alot of the ones you called slow growers, grow fast for me and many others I know here in europe. With over 160 species of Hoya, I try and help others as much as I can. I would suggest adding a few more growlights to your shelves and increasing the watering schedule for them! They say hoya thrive in neglect but not abandonment. I hope this doesn't come off rude. 🌿❤️
