@Ethan Shipley Your "rat"? Do you know that they are social animals that suffer being alone? You need to get a minimum of 2, if you want rats! It's very cruel to keep them on their own. I hope you got another one by now.
I’ve only bought my rats a few toys and they didn’t seem to like them, and I’ve never bothered to make any. I have a 2 year old and a 1 year old and I feel like I’ve been neglecting them. They have full range of my room and I make sure to spend time with them every day, but of course a room you’ve run around in for a year is going to get old. I just want to do better for my boys.
if you make diys be very careful of the materials you use for they could be toxic to your rat especially if you are not there all the time to supervise them
Cool thing and thanks. But to tell you truth I was hoping to see you're ratties interacting with your ratty toys, oh well, may next time, hint hint. All the same thanks for doing good, good stuff.
Not enough time in this video unfortunately, but you can see my rats interacting with the DIY's I made in the tissue box DIY video: ua-cam.com/video/Bvu05ZC_wj4/v-deo.html
This is brilliant thank you! I worry that my girls get bored and aren’t being challenged enough. I feel that pet stores don’t have enough enrichment activities for rodents and if they do they’re over priced! So this is great! Please keep it up 👍
Thank you so much for this video! I'll be moving in (to Europe, actually XD) with my boyfriend in a few months, and we're getting rats then. (I grew up with rats when i was younger and had my own right after college, but haven't been able to for the last few years. :( Very sad.) I'm seen other DIY videos for toys, a lot of which seem to be unhealthy for rats or just plain boring. But these seem excellent! Perfectly safe and much more effective at providing activities they'd occupy themselves with in the wild. Add in how expensive (and still often unsafe or boring) manufactured toys are, and these become a wonderful alternative. I love all of your videos--even as a relatively experienced 'rat mom,' I've learned a lot, and they're lovely rats to enjoy vicariously.
Is it safe if the rats ingest some of the crinkle paper ? I want to make that toy but my rats eat and chew everything, and I’m worried about it hurting them.
Rats are really good at not ingesting inedible items, they even had a cheek flap that physically blocks the esophagus as they chew inedible things to prevent them from accidentally swallowing stuff they gnaw on (for example wood which rats can't digest). That being said I doubt ingesting a bit of paper would hurt them, personally I've had rats try and eat some of the paper bedding I use (same stuff as this crinkle stuff but not colored) along with some of the yesterdays news pellets before they realize its not food and this small bit doesn't harm them.
thank you for great new ideas! bamboo skewers give me the creeps though because they splinter so sharply... but will definitely be crafting some of these for my rat. (yes, only the one right now for medical reasons, would love for him to have friends again. fingers crossed...)
Yeah, the skewers can unfortunately splinter - although I really don't know what happened to mine as by the next day the rats had apparently chewed it to shreds! I imagine something like a pipe cleaner could also work if you poke the holes with some scissors.
Umm, yeah I tried these with my 6 girlies and they chewed up all the plastic from the cup, and they chewed the string from the noodles and all the noodles were EVERYWHERE! Haha at least they had a blast!
Just got a rat and made her the pants hammock and also the first egg carton toy in this video and she freakin loves them, I also gave her a small wooden house and a wheel and she's so happy, I'm going to keep making your diy toys, I have so much space left!
I think I will try some of these for my hamster. Thank you for sharing your ideas. One question: is the plastic you've used for your toys safe for rodents to chew? I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with Sweetie chewing the plastic cup or bottle caps, but maybe they are safe for rats. The rest of the toys look like fun for her. Thanks again.
This is a late reply but it should be safe for all rodents. Rodents typically wont ingest what they chew unless it tastes good. But if you're worried about them eating it then maybe steer clear from the plastic anyways!! It be fine, but I know some would still be worried about it I like to use paper stuff for them because I know it wont smell or taste good and is just for grinding their teeth down. Wooden toys are also good for them as long as it isnt pine or anything scented or something like that hah! Sorry this is late, hope it helps someone tho !!
My rat loves tissue paper. It will spend all day playing with his paper. It doesn't want other toys so long as it has its paper. A big box with lightly crumple tissue paper (to wrap presents with) will do. I use a shoe box. Yes I have to change the paper every day. It's ripped into pieces and gets everywhere.
I find it better to make your own toys cause if u buy them one first it's expensive second they get bored of them fast and third they destroy it lol these are cheap and easy and they can destroy them all they want thanks for the ideas
Great ideas and an excellent presentation. If you have a really large rat you could use an oatmeal cylinder to make the tunnel. And for the cork ring, you can use a bendable wire, rather than the skewers, to prevent a rat from accidentally injuring an eye or its mouth on the pointy end of a skewer. And to hang toys and other items, I buy 2" carabiner spring-clip hook packs from Amazon. I make loops in the twine and slip it over a carabiner to make it easy to attach and detach items from the wire. But if you are using 1/4 rat wire, you will need 1 inch lanyard hooks or S hooks. If money is tight, you can make your own S hooks out of coat-hanger wire. Amazon also sells Tenn Well Braided Jute Twine, 165 Feet 3.5mm Thick Twine Rope for Crafting which is thicker than the twine found in most stores so it can take a lot of stress from rats hanging off of the toys.

I would be a bit concerned about giving rats uncooked paster for fear it would swell up in the rat's stomach and might cause discomfort. But perhaps this worry is unfounded and paster is no worse than other dry foods?
Even if this were true the amount of space taken up would be the same - take a cup of pasta that’s soaked up a cup of water and it takes the same space as an individual cup of pasta and an individual cup of water. With that being said dried pasta and other dried foods like lentils take a lot of time to absorb water and the rats stomach will have broken it down well before then. Not sure where this myth of dry foods expanding in the stomach got stared but it doesn’t apply to birds or other animals either.
my boys wouldn't fir through this pringles-tunnel ^^' or, maybe they fit and then take the box with them... the smallest one weights over 600g. and they're not looking fat.
I guess some rats will have trouble. But I had a girl over 600 grams squeeze through tubes this size before so I really think most rats can squeeze through if they want.
I’m not bother to do these just yet cause I’m getting two rats next week I’ll be naming my boys whisky & willow ( i know that willow is a girl name but it’s cute ok? 😭 )
For the Pringles can, I’ve actually found that using a can opener to get the metal piece out is easier than the scissors

What delicious are you using ?
Gerber puffs!
my boys wouldn't fir through this pringles-tunnel ^^' or, maybe they fit and then take the box with them... the smallest one weights over 600g. and they're not looking fat.
I guess some rats will have trouble. But I had a girl over 600 grams squeeze through tubes this size before so I really think most rats can squeeze through if they want.
Mine range from 600-1050grams they need a 4inch tube
I’m not bother to do these just yet cause I’m getting two rats next week I’ll be naming my boys whisky & willow ( i know that willow is a girl name but it’s cute ok? 😭 )
