    The PVC pipe is genius. Especially since actual tunnels and such cost more than that. And the ping pong pit. You could stick a few treats in there for them to find:)

    The fact your rat can open their snack container!! That's amazing. So many great ideas! Was curious to finding new ways to hang things (i used zip ties) but my girls chewed threw every single one. Dog collars are a great choice!

      Old Fashioned Oats (in moderation)
      Meat, veggie, and fruit baby food
      Cut up veggies and fruit
      Frozen veggies like corn and peas in dish with water (pea fishing on hot days)
      I always check a safe rat food list before giving them anything. I also read through the ingredients and make sure I’m choosing a flavor that is appropriate for them. I avoid pet store treats.

    • @elliechasingsunrises
      @elliechasingsunrises  5 років тому +3

      Typically plastics are safe for rats to chew since they do not ingest it. I haven't had a problem with my girls (9 of them now) with plastic balls, baskets, or the PVC pipe. It has been very safe! I also include a ton of lava ledges and other pet safe pumice for them to chew on, and they tend to prefer that.

    I need to know but if I can’t take my rats outside of their cage every hour can I just give them a huge cage

    • @elliechasingsunrises
      @elliechasingsunrises  5 років тому +1

      My girls have big cages (Double Critter Nations) and they still desperately need out time. Having out time is important for stimulation and socializing. If you can't do an hour every day, aim for half an hour every day or an hour every other day. Make sure you give them a lot of toys, foraging items, etc. A big cage is only as good as the amount of stuff in it. Get creative - news paper, boxes stuffed with crinkle paper, scattered treats.

    My rattie tore through the ping pong balls. Do i have to worry about him ingesting them?

    • @elliechasingsunrises
      @elliechasingsunrises  4 роки тому +1

      Rats will typically chew but not eat plastic, wood, and other materials. You can look for the little plastic pieces they drop from chewing and spitting them out. I would pick up the chewed ping pong balls as you find them. Unfortunately they don’t last all that long if your rats are super chewers. We also enjoy the hard practice golf balls that have holes in them.

    • @JimiJam44
      @JimiJam44 4 роки тому

      @@elliechasingsunrises thanks! I did find bits and pieces and have sinced removed all of them. On another note. My baby has been sneezing and what i assume is congestion. Most likely respiratory issues? Are there other at home remedies to help with this irritation. It hasn't affected his eating or playfulness. Just lots of nose blowing. Cage is cleaned on the regular.

    • @elliechasingsunrises
      @elliechasingsunrises  4 роки тому

      Check out my video on upper respiratory infections. If it’s a new rat, it could be new home sneezes. If not, it could be a URI. Rats don’t get colds or mild congestion. Rats are predisposed to mycoplasma which can flare up and cause upper respiratory infections. Rats have a very sensitive respiratory system. If your rat does have a URI, you’ll need to visit a vet and get antibiotics. There aren’t home remedies that will stop the progression of a URI.

      Hi there, so happy to hear you are taking care of those sweet rats! These two girls were around a year old at the time of filming. Rats are considered adults around 6 months, but I find they don’t reach full size until 12-16 months. I have other videos that have my tiny 6-8 week old girls and they are super tiny in comparison. Female rats will generally fit in the palms of your two hands quite comfortably. If your rats are under 6 months, they will need a baby rat foot like oxbow baby rat food. Then, they can switch to oxbow adult rat food. That is a very high end brand of food for rats and safe for them to eat. Unfortunately a lot of foods targeted towards pocket pets are bad for them. Please let me know if you have any questions, I am happy to help! I’m also on Instagram @jess.anns if you need to send a dm with pictures of your rats for any help.

      Damien Grenier hey! rats can show affection or curiosity by nibbling your fingers. sometimes they can draw a little bit of blood but usually they bite you because either they think you have food or because they want to play. your rats are new to your home so i think they might just be curious! or they may be undersocialized. also i think it’s usually best to get new toys for rats bc they can get bored with the same things! make sure to get toys that are safe for them :-)

    I tried a lot of things in this video along with others to try to get my rats to be playful. I have 3 8 month old male rats n all they want to do is cuddle with me or hide in the box maze I made. During play time they go hide. They hated the ping pong balls along with the different things I put in their cages. Too scared to get in the shower curtain ring hanging basket and they kicked the micro fiber towels out of their bed. They don't like to play at all. They want me to either hide or cuddle with me while they sleep. Would neutering all 3 make them less grouchy? Geeze!

      They aren't grouchy - it's quite normal for male rats to be less active than females. Males tend to be "lazier" which makes them the perfect cuddlers. My girls can be skittish around hanging baskets, too. That's not uncommon since rats are naturally prey animals, thus making them hesitant of many new things. Rats love rearranging, so you'll find them moving blankets and boxes around. I'd suggest spending time with your males in a small area such as a couch, bed, or other safe enclosed area. You can even wear a sweatshirt or have a blanket over you for them to feel safe in. Try feeding them wet baby food to get them to warm up to you. Are the rats new to you? I do not suggest neutering. It's often unnecessary and to me the risk isn't worth it unless they're highly aggressive. Keep at it and enjoy your furry friends.

    Im too scared to let my rat run freely around my room. I have a computer and game consoles and Im afraid he might try to nibble a cord. I get my 2nd rat tomorrow. =)

      You can teach him “come” so if he starts chewing you can call him over

      Grant Boyd Yup! Fancy rats are already domesticated and a well socialized rat can be taught many tricks, just like dogs

      Some places rats are trained to sniff out bombs. Rats definitely Are domesticated and can be passed down amazing socail skills throughout generations. I love my little girl's, They can't sniff out bombs but they sure can sniff out Cheerios! Lol.
