Regarding his dislike for Elton, I just think Keith isn't seeing the whole picture. For one, most gay guy's are a bit theatrical. (what did you expect). Secondly, Elton was a chubby nerdy kid who's folks did not treat very well or help the situation. Then add cocaine paranoia. I'm way more a Stones guy, but what I will say about Elton John's body of work in the 70s, is that it's hugely unique and those songs have some of the best lyrics ever written (hats off to Bernie) too.
@@cowboysfan782008 Elton John and Bernie Taupin have a great catalog. But Keith is entitled to his opinion. And I think Elton was a bit flamboyant over the top in the 70s. But then again, it is the entertainment business.
I liked the whole spectrum of music in the 60’s and 70’s in particular. The polarisation of Beatles / Rolling stones was largely manufactured by the music industry anyway! Keith looks at music through the lens of live music - there’s plenty of room for experimentation, IMO and McCartney was brilliant at it but we also have to look at how the Stones are STILL playing live and playing most modern bands off the stage. I first saw the Stones at the Crawdaddy Club as a kid of 13 (don’t ask!)and they could kick the joint into the highest gear with ease. But I enjoyed many other bands, each of them supplying their own particular essence of “what music should be” to the mix of probably the greatest period of music in modern times.
Same way he said he couldn't understand the appeal of Bowie, said Changes was OK from the Hunky Dory album and couldn't understand the public sorrow when Bowie died. ffs Bowie a million times more creative then the stones.
I think Pepper's only has a couple of good songs: Day in the Life/ She's Leaving Home/ Fixing a Hole/ LSD. The critics have not liked Led Zep either. You can talk about who he hated but I know one late artist that Keith and all the Stones loved. MELANIE SAFKA. They even asked her to tour as their opening act back in 1977. Melanie always liked touring alone so she turned them down. She had good relationships with the Stons and also with The Who. Once she had to follow The Who at a festival and they helped clear the stage for her and she sang as the sun raised . RIP dear Melanie.

Neither the beatles nor the stones were rock bands technically they were pop and blues. Simple is quite the ironic definition coming from one of the simplest guitar riffers to come down the pike. Drug addled and self centered is what he is no definitive critic.
Excuse me, but the Beatles last recorded in 1969 - more or less "rock" did not start before the second half of the 1960s. Ever heard "Helter Skelter", "Why don't we do it in the road", "Happiness is a warm gun", Come together" a.o.? Of course "She loves you" or "Yellow submarine" were not "rock" but even the Who or Pretty Things or Yardbirds had non-rock-songs.

Richards is free to be a music critic. You don't have to agree with him. Rocks by its own nature is wild. Rock is good when it makes you feel good. Look at the trouble Elvis got with shaking his hips. Elvis wore a jump suit. Good rock has a little bit of controversy. It is not a recital. It's a concert.

First of all, I am as big of a Stones fan that you will find. But criticizing Prince and Elton John (both of whom I don't care much for) as creating a spectacle and a show at the expense of "the Music" is pure bullshit. They all learned their chops from the man Kieth has stood behind on the stage, one Mick Jagger. If you don't like their music. or your jealous of their success, just say so.
Opinions are like buttholes everyone has one , and it looks like keith isn't lacking in that department. But someone should have told keith that if you dont have anything nice to say , its better to say nothing at all.
I value Keith as a musician and respect (most) of his opinions. However, IMO, he has no credibility when it comes to putting down spectacle. I saw "Steel Wheels," "Voodoo Lounge" and Bridges to Babylon." They were brilliant spectacles in every sense of the word.
So the guitarist from the rock and roll circus is criticizing spectacle? So he never happened to notice that he was on stage with that other guy in the rolling stones, who some would say is a little flamboyant? Maybe some would say attention hungry? Cmon Keith spectacle is the name of the game that you were on a team that won.
I think Mick Jagger was a.bit of a showman himself, especially in the later years of the Stones so why isn't Richards criticizing that? Hey, Prince came out with some pretty good tunes so don't knock him. No need to come out with hurtful comments, and what of it if some performers like to show off if the fans.seem to love it? Keith Richards boxes himself in, and that is OK, but others have their own way of expressing themselves and shouldn't expect the others to model themselves after him.He should honor that, that others have their own style. I have to agree with Richards when it comes to heavy metal, and he made a point with what he said about Black Sabbath. Overall, it appears that Keith Richards has a very big mouth for a musician who prefers to remain such an unassuming character onstage.
Page can outplay Richard's in his sleep. As much as I love the Stones' music, just because Keith has severe issues with admitting his limitations as a guitar player, I don't think that excuses his ignorance. If it is not ignorance, it has to be jealousy. I refuse to say Keith is stupid, but if he doesn't recognize genius, the label 'ignorance' fits.
he did just to many drugs , I mean really , was he jealous or what; He seems to bad mouth this one , and that one, and wont admit that what the stones put out in the later years was rubbish
I love Keith and The Rolling Stones. He’s one of my favorite humans. But The Zeppelin was on a different level. They were the greatest band that ever walked the earth in my opinion. And truthfully they would’ve demolished The Stones on any given night. The Rolling Stones couldn’t play like Zeppelin. They didn’t have the improvisational fortitude that Zeppelin had. Zeppelin had a mysticism live. It was like they all knew what to do when they didn’t know what to do if that makes any sense? They were just an unstoppable force.
Also, Keith is a legit tough guy. He will fight, and he will drink and drug you under the table, and he has overcome a life that would have killed or landed most ppl in a funny farm, so he's not exactly nurturing when he see's acts of what he views as weakness.
@flyingburritobro68 you do some , Keith has never had a filter on that big mouth. Oasis looked up to him and he slammed them. He said , " it's not professional to walk off stage ". Well it's not professional to be in rock and roll and bash everyone from page , who he couldn't touch , to anyone that blabber mouth just doest like that's in rock and roll.
He's ahead of us all. Calls it like he sees it. Prince was a Musician and perhaps that is all he could be. Napolean complex, over dressed over everything, over written over produced and lyrics are downright bubble gumball, He's better than I am, and better than most, but not a Rock God. Richards is a real musical god who just rocks it out all the time, and is a natural genius, If you can't wrap your head around it, that's ok, people eat bugs in some places I don't care for bugs, enough t ever try one.

Never confuse success with talent. Elton John had enormous success with the most trashy kind of music you can come up with. It's dead, it's soulless and exploitative, it's a waste of time.
Always the Stones were in the shadow of the Beatles, the envy is real. Led Zeppelins album sales and popularity pretty well on par with the Stones and Zeppelin far better live, so many opinions say the Stones are crap live
I like the Rolling Stones very much and they are obviously a great band but they are nowhere near as talented as Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin is miles ahead in talent. The Stones don't even come close to being as great as Zeppelin.
The Rolling Stones had undeniably great songs though. Way better than anything Jimmy Page or Robert Plant came up with (or stole from the 1930s-40s-50's American blues legends). Led Zeppelin might've been the more talented musicians, but not as talented in the songwriting department.
Keith, you guys were always 10 steps behind the Beatles, of course you were jealous, you all tried , but you were just a decent rock band . The Beatles were pure genius. The stones will be long forgotten, while the Beatles will be remembered forever. Jealousy is a nasty thing!
How many times do you have to say that Keith speaks his mind? Hello? Do you get more money, the longer the video is?? And Keith Richards is barely human. In fact, I will say that he and the lips must have made a pact with the devil years ago and that Brian Jones was the downpayment. They certainly were not talented enough to endure this long on their own ...
