- Starting from the late '70s punk-era up to Britpop explosion in the early '90s, here are a list of some classic riffs that came from Manchester based groups. I know there were others in the '60s and 2000s but I decided to focus more on this significant period in Manchester's musical history.

the smiths have the best guitar riffs. Johnny marr is a genius
Out of all these bands they probably do to be fair. I might do a separate video for them.
@@bloxsy_ yes!
Even Johnny Marr can't play Johnny Marr
and he is a Manchester City fan. What a legend
@@ivanvasiliev193 nobody's perfect. Even Johnny Marr.
That Day of the Lords riff is chilling. The JD riffs get overlooked because of the amazing basslines and drumming
Johnny Marr is my favorite. This Charming Man is why I learned to play guitar. Definitely do a video just on the Smiths or Marr. His work with the The, Electronic, Pretenders, Talking Heads, Modest Mouse & solo work equally inspired even if not the same je ne sais quoi as with the Smiths.
That is a quality riff. Yeah think I'll probably do a Smiths one at some point. He has played with a lot of bands though. Briefly played with The Cribs too.
Agree with the comment just thought i should say that it is actually je ne sais quoi
@@Smrda1312 lol. Now that you mention it, I knew that! I Googled it and remember being surprised thinking, "that looks wrong" ... oh well!
@@bloxsy_ plus Marr was the one who came up with riff for "Dashboard" for Modest Mouse. Probably one of the catchiest ones in the last 20 years
Waterfall riff sounded fantastic, mate.
Great riffs all round, but I must admit, for New Order, I’d have preferred to hear Age of Consent, love that riff.
Ah cheers mate. Yeah Age Of Consent is a great one.
Or maybe "leave me alone". I absolutely adore this simple, but heart-touching riff
johnny marr is my favorite guitarist ever! some girls are bigger than others is a heavenly riff
Hell yeah! The city of Manchester has provided so many gifted musicians along the years, and you've picked some nice gems as Day of the Lords, Loose Fit and What Difference Does It Make (even though I was wondering if it's missing a note in the end of the riff or not). Great video!
Thanks. Yeah The Smiths one is tricky, so I may have missed a note haha
@@bloxsy_ it's totally fine, I'm so glad this was the first option instead of half a dozen more obvious ones! Waterfall is also a pretty cool choice, I saw the Roses on their reunion tour in London and the crowd went nuts just as the first notes hit. Considering it's not a staple as I Wanna Be Adored, I thought that means a lot
Btw, a Stone Roses video would be awesome, John Squire has recorded several great riffs and licks
Probably Marr's best riff- though I wouldnt stop you from saying "Some Girls are Bigger than Others" is his best riff.
@@sunny1992s he's a beast. Headmaster Ritual, Girl Afraid and Barbarism Begins At Home are also top notch
Y so judgy tho
The Stone Roses riff is just so iconic of that era.Great playing.
The Chameleons are also a great band from Manchester, I especially like their songs "Swamp Thing" and "Monkeyland".
Think I've got them down for a Post-punk video. Didn't realise they were from Manchester too!
@@bloxsy_ yeah, awesome! Great video, btw! 👍
Perfume Garden is awesome 👌
Is It Any Wonder by The Chameleons is probably one of the best songs I've heard from them
The intro of "View from a bridge" is a masterpiece.
I came to hear Stone Roses and I wasn’t disappointed. Cigarettes and Alcohol by Oasis is a timeless riff but they totally lifted it from T Rex’s Bang A Gong.
everything is taken from somewhere, the bassline to I saw her standing there (beatles lol) is taken directly from chuck berry
That instantly hit me, too.
Get it on.
Good artists copy and great ones steal.
Even Noel admitted he borrowed the riff, it was before they were even signed and he didn’t care because he never thought they’d blow up quite like they did! Great tune, great riff, but probably could of chosen an abundance of other tunes that were less obvious or original like Acquiesce, My big mouth and so on! Great video and great group of bands in this list nonetheless! Manchester music will live forever
Wow, never knew Noel Gallagher was such a T-Rex fan!
That was fun, cheers. Anyone who can play Marr & Squire riffs without mistakes deserves much respect. Cheers.
@@MidosujiSen fair play, that's the same rationale i've used for keeping a rodan riff in one of my band's songs (i say "keeping"; i was asked to sketch out a guitar part for something that had already mostly been written, got bored, played a bit of "the everyday world of bodies", the band said "that's good, keep it", and just got blank stares when i told them where i'd cribbed it from. in my defence, my band is _definitely, _*_never_* going to be as big as oasis ever was, and we're happy with that. also i think people who have heard of a louisville kentucky math rock band that released exactly one lp before splitting are a bit harder to find than people who have heard of one of the best glam rock bands of the seventies. still, i've adapted the original rodan guitar part a lot (not least because i'm no jason noble or jeff mueller), and am (obviously) more than happy to tell anybody who compliments the riff _exactly_ where i pinched it from (because rodan are great and more people should listen to them))
For the minimal gear you never cease to amaze with those tones
Thank you.
i’d love to see one of bristol riffs as it’s my home city, some bands are
IDLES
Portishead
Massive Attack
Tears for Fears
The Pigs
Idles has some wicked riffs x
And riffs from Coventry or Birmingham ! Black Sabbath , Specials etc
I guess it’s close enough for you to say they’re from Bristol, but Tears for Fears are from Bath if we’re being pedantic.
Great tunes from Manchester and Bristol. Cheers from Ireland neighbours,
Bristol! Hell yeah
Manchester, so much to answer for... like great music. Nice job!
Supersonic is an incredible riff. So simple yet so in your face and melodic.
Squires licks are my fav 👌🏿 you nailed them. ❤️
Thanks man.
Really happy you put a Magazine song in there, they're amazing!!
Riffs from Scottish bands? Bands from particular US states? I think this sort of series has potential. Hadn't heard of some of the bands on the list and definitely hadn't heard a lot of these riffs on their own.
Scottish bands would be a good. Yeah I did one for New York about a year ago but it didn't really catch on so I didn't follow it up. Might try doing some more.
@@bloxsy_ manchester is just so insanely influential, I don't think you can make a video that would have a similar impact, save for possibly seattle
Barney's Joy Division guitar work was sometimes frightening. Like sheets of black on occasion. And Johnny Marr is his own man. He has a legacy with The Smiths but he's done alright on his own.
electronic was underrated
@@olympian3 Yes. And that first Electronic album is in a world of it's own. I can listen to that album for absolute pleasure. A real treat.
Manchester. A lot to answer for. Great to see a Fall number in there too. Very well played, sir
Thank you, kind sir.
Good selection 👍🏻..Happy Monday's Mark Day is a criminally underrated guitarist
Joy Division and The Smiths is my favorite musican bands. Thank u for the video!
Seeing The Fall was unexpected! Great job
I LOVE the Manchester bands. PLEASE DO IT AGAIN.
The New Order's riff Is underrated af
Thanks for the video, Manchester has produced some of the greatest bands and musicians of all time. Would love to see Bristol represented as well.
The Smiths and Oasis hands down are the highlights in this one! 💯
Oasis are bottom of my list. They were obnoxious egomaniacs (Well, the brothers were) with more mouth than talent, IMO.
@@FFM0594 Can't argue with that👌🏻perhaps we just somehow honor them for existing and the Wonderwall memes 🤣
yeah most of the others are pretty bland, can't really knock most of them though they aren't exactly riffy bands.
Mr. Thayil, you're channeling Noel Gallagher now...and I dig it! Cheers mate
Thanks mate!
Superb playing ! Oasis still my faves though
Ditto that brother
certainly makes me proud to be a Mancunian! Love the city, its people and its brilliant music.

@@JejakARDANA and always will be
@@JejakARDANA forever and ever
No inspiral carpets?! shame. subbed anyway, nice work. I heard waterfall back in 1990 and decided to buy a guitar so i could learn it. took a while (no internet back then) but i nailed it and i have a stone roses lemon tattoo because of it. edit: cigarettes and alcohol is just a T-rex song tho.
Glad to see Mark Day represented, his influence on that era is really underestimated...
Well played mate
I second that. And he's a City fan.
There's a Ghost in my House isn't even a Fall original lol. It's a Motown tune
With this knowledge, Bloxsy, now you gotta do a video full of Fall stuff!
Was just gonna say the exact same thing.
Ghost in my house was done by R dean taylor
Awesome selection! You know what's so awesome? When you stack it against the Buzzcocks, Joy Division and so on, "Supersonic" is so Manchester - it's dirty, but definitely has a post-punk edge that you don't pick up on when you first listen to it.
Nice guitar, spot-on tones and super solid playing! Some riffs I will be learning!
Thanks mate. Appreciate it.
I can’t believe how many bands have come from Manchester
You've obviously never met many Mancs, then. They're certainly not shy of the auld art of self-promotion.
@@chrisbayes2972 It's all we had, really, mate. The music is the only thing we can harp on about. That and footie, but one half won't acknowledge the other.
If I could come up with just one guitar riff, that would be Loose Fit. Absolutely genius.
Everyone knows the Mondays for Shaun and Bez, and their notorious antics, but they actually had some very talented musicians behind them. Mark Day is a criminally underrated guitarist. God's Cop is one of my favourite ever riffs.
I will learn all these guitar riffs one day. Currently a beginner right now but I will get their someday.
Buzzcocks were and still are some of the best.
Nice! You could do an entire Manchester riff vid on just Johnny Marr stuff. Best of the bunch, IMHO.
Great job! Also good choice of guitar, Fender Jaguar very much suits the tone of bands like the Smiths and the Roses.
Great, but still miss Acquiesce.
Loved seeing Loose Fit in the list.
You forgot the Chameleons. Great video as always :)
Yeah I didn't realise they were from Manchester. They're on my list for post-punk riffs too.
i love all of these especially the stone roses & joy division one :)
Imagine doing riffs from Liverpool bands it would be 10 times longer than this one!
The Beatles. The Beatles. The Beatles. The Beatl.......
@@mana3735 err...echo and the bunnymen, china crisis, flock of seagulls, teardrop explodes, lotus eaters, the la's, cast, the zutons, the farm, lightning seeds, wombats, Christians, omd, icicle works, the coral. I could go on and on. So more than just the beatles. Unlike Manchester who have a few.
@@neilfitzsimmons1800 None of them have any distinctive guitar riffs. Maybe the Bunnymen and The Las, but the rest pale into insignificance compared to the Manc bands.
@@mana3735 laughable.
@@neilfitzsimmons1800 True, though.
As a proud Mancunian this collection shows why Manchester is a breeding ground for amazing bands
Great stuff. Would have loved another Smiths riff though
Also although not technically Mancunians, the Charlatans were part of the Manchester scene and had some great riffs.
Your channel is everything! Keep it up
Wow, you really nailed the tones, and great song choices!
'There's A Ghost In My House' is a cover version of an R Dean Taylor Northern Soul track. Maybe 'Totally Wired' or 'How I Wrote Elastic Man'?
James' Larry Gott and Saul Davies were/are underrated as hell and are a certified Manchester band
Man, I love everything that you do bro… the tone of your instrument, the atmospheric darkness of the sound - it’s amazing!! I still can’t get your grunge version of Taxman out of my head, cheers from Texas brother.🤠
Ah thanks man! Really appreciate the kind words.
Great tone, man. Keep it up!
You should do a list only with The Smiths on it.
Cool. Nice playing. Nice guitar
You should probably either do a riffs video on New Order or The Smiths; whichever you decide to choose, it’ll be a great.
I think itll be pretty cool if you do a video on each of those bands
brilliant video! thank you for the effort and for sharing your skills and talents!
great video length too (longer would also be nice but, the meme)
Nice one m9. Have you had any trouble with that Player Jag? They're famous for needing setup work.
Yeah I replaced the bridge and put a buzz stop on it. It's a bit better but still not great.
@@bloxsy_ Ah shame, they look so cool and that pickup combo is so versatile, hopefully Fender makes a decent mid-range jag or jazzmaster in the next series. Glad your channel is getting bigger man, remember when it was only a few k. Mashallah xox
Yes hopefully. And thanks, yeah it's grown a lot in the last couple of years.
Great video and playing as usual - but... The Fall made 31 albums and you chose a Motown cover version?! How about Cruiser's Creek or Eat Y'Self Fitter or Touch Sensitive or something?
I'm not that familiar with The Fall. Someone mentioned it in a comment so I thought I'd play it. I'll check those songs out though. Thanks
Frightened by the fall
The tone is amazing....
awesome video, good job
I was hoping to see The Fall, and I wasn't disappointed
how do five of the most seminal bands respective to their genre emerge from one town? awestruck
Good one my man! Next can you do some Green Day or Offspring riffs?
Yeah. I'm doing a post-punk video, and eventually might do a pop-punk one too.
Would love to see the status quo
LOVE the Manchester bands AND solo artists...
Dude i love your channel, so humble and powerfull, exito en todo.
Thank you my friend.
Jesus mate you absolutely nail the tones.
Thanks mate. Much appreciated.
nice video, you should do a bristol or london one next
So many great bands it's hard to believe their all from the same place
Ha ha ha ha the tone on waterfall and loose fit was spot on.
Loose Fit is such an unusual song. I love that riff.
A good one if people don't know - Can You Dig It by The Mock Turtles.
Not bad… Joy Division and Oasis are one of my favorite bands
A song from under the floorboards, very changing man by Weller
Nice vid. I missed some James riff.
Durutti Column mate to hear the true Manchester guitar wizz Vini :)
Unfortunately the Fall didn't write that riff. It was by Canadian R. Dean Taylor.
John McGeough wrote snd played the brilliant Magazine riff.
Johnny Marr riff is certainly fluid and lovely. Bernard Sumner's guitar work wins the darkest category.
Johnny Marr y John Squire son unos CRACKS
Lovely tone. Killing it.
Lovely stuff.
Brilliant!, best one yet!
Thank you!
How is the Player Jag? Considering buying that model but have read mixed reviews. Great playing by the way
Really good tones coming out your guitar.
MORE PLEASE
kinky afro by the mondays is probably one of the best mancunian riffs
My personal favorite Oasis riff has to be Live Forever
Excelente video, saludos desde Mexico.
Awesome Another Guitar Riffs based on pacific places
So how about Australia Next?
Yeah I want to do more of these. Australia, Detroit, L.A, London.
The Smiths riffs are the best.
Best Liverpool riffs would be class
Brilliant 🤟🎸🎶
I really enjoyed watching that
Thank you.
Nice man!
That boss katanga sounds rad!
most of my fav bands are from Manchester!
The hollies - long cool woman
3:15 the best
Loving the tone! Is all coming from the boss katana? Can you share some of your configurations?
