Happy Mondays only in honourable mentions? You’re twisting my melon, man.
Weird Geezers
What a Brilliant comment
They should have been up there
Compared to the Smiths, I'm kind of surprised they are mentioned at all.
They should have been in the list instead of that Elbow band
Oasis 4th? shambles
and btw the City of Manchester Stadium gig was in 2005 not 2007
oasis is overplayed
@@lisztdylan7846 Jesus you must be joking
@@TCBCAFC Oasis tried being The Beatles and The Jam and arent a patch on either and they both finished at the top unlike Oasis!
@@johnwick-vo7ig Get off it , the whole Beatles thing is bullshit that the media just assumed Oasis tryed to copy Beatles when they didnt , yes they might of taken progressions , not from The Beatles , they made music for a generation and if im honest in the end Oasis in the 90s ended on top of everyone else
@@TCBCAFC Oasis 1sr two albums are amazing but who remembers anything they did after that,Noel is always banging on about The Beatles so why is it bullshit. And the greatest purely english band are The Jam cause they knew when to stop and didnt embarrass themselves with sub standard songs for 10yrs like Oasis and before you say that's bullshit both the Gallachers are massive Jam fans!
Am I the only one who seems to be questioning New Order at #7?
BlK 10 No, I wondered the same thing and having Elbow ahead of New Order is equally absurd.
peterhook72 ikr. No offence to Elbow but I’ve never really heard of them before and I’m pretty into my Manchester bands so it does seem weird
BlK 10 from Bury not MCR ✌️
68majortom ahhh well ya know what I mean haha
No i wonder myself, should have been in the top 5 or even the top 3 alongside Joy Division.
As a fan of many Manchester bands, For me, my favourite is joy division
Same
Mines Doves
The Smiths at #1 I agree with
Oasis should be #3
And New Order at #7? That's a joke.
The Chameleons - criminally under-appreciated and over looked band
Still my ALL TIME favorite band!
Steve Smith , I couldn’t agree more.
Yeah, I quite like the Chameleons lol
The Chameleons continue to rule, r.i.p. John lever, a beautiful soul, loved and missed. 😪♥️
Kinko Afro is better than the entire catalog of whatever "Elbow" is.......come on.
blotty smookin sorry what?
blotty smookin elbow shouldnt of even got a mention , the happy Monday’s should of been in top 5 , they are Manchester
ramsbottom isnt considered manchester to all the mancunians i know
As a Mancunian, it’s the roses for me. Especially as a united fan.
A United fan not from London??? Now there's an oxymoron!!
SolBf Liverpool fan and the roses should be number one
They are brilliant but they only had the one album that was worth listening to
Oasis
I'm a City fan but it's still the Roses for me.
No mention of The Charlatens? Shameful.
1,000 upvotes. and i'm born and raised in Southern California!!!
I loved the charlatans back in the day and it was always assumed by most that they were a Manchester band
I knew otherwise and had to correct people so much
The charlatans were the dog's bolloxs though, saw em a few times in the early 90s
Ikr
Lee Davenport the lead singer Tim burges is from Manchester
a certain ratio wythenshawes funksters
Joy division just had that extra thing about them. I'm happy as well that they put both New Order and Joy Division on the list
Interesting fact: Noel Gallagher was a roadie on tour with Inspiral Carpets before Oasis got together.
Neeeeecian ✌✌🇬🇧🇬🇧
No he wasn't, he was a roadie for them

Sean Kilburn what?
@@biblical1694 overrated
Sean Kilburn they’re really not
I've been listening The Smiths everyday for 35 years now.
The 1975 on the same list as Joy Division, Oasis, etc? Don't take the mick.
You sir are a good man.
TheAlabasterMaster they're actually a very good band, especially for this decade.
And fucking Elbow
They are just a cheap copy of INXS really...
El Padrino like how Oasis are basically a Beatles tribute act.
They had the audacity to put Stone Roses higher than Joy Division 😳
Couldn’t have it any other way
lmao ik wtf going on. I love the stone roses but Joy Division changed music forever.
@@noverrr4508 Stone Roses didn't change music you say? They inspired Oasis Bruvvvvv
@@Peerk9058 wow. Honestly I love oasis. But they didn't really do anything different to anyone else music wise. It is just bog standard basic rock n roll style pop music. Love em tho.
@@noverrr4508 Stone Roses is my favorite band ever and for me their music has been life changing. They leaded me into the Madchester scene and i love it all. But i can feel what you say about oasis. Here in the Netherlands (where i'm from) people only listen to wonderwall, and they don't even know oasis as a band. everybody is just listening to reggeaton shit. Roses opened my eyes for all the amazing manchester music, and more indie rock and Britt pop
As an American college student, the Smiths were my favorite band and I had all of their albums. They were a lot "bigger" in America than the English give them credit for in terms of their popularity. They "were" the English 80's Sound as far as I'm concerned. To this day, 30 some years on, I never get tired of listening to a Smith's song. One of the cultural gems of England. I think that the song "Still Ill" was one of the greatest songs ever written....."I decree today that life is simply taking and not giving, England is mine - it owes me a living."
yanky boy! no one cares! you are a conditioned annoying idiot!
I'm pleasantly surprised that you guys actually had the balls to put the Stone Roses above Oasis
Julia Ellis and the verve was number 9 wtf ? They should been in the top 5 at least
I love both, but you can't deny that Stone Roses are much more influential
Even Don't believe the truth is enough to put them over the rest of the bands on this list
Gita Andani Incorrect. Oasis are.
It's a fact though innit, like the roses are way better than oasis, if you disagree, then I will do nothing because I'm just saying this on my phone so have no actual capabilities to effect your life in any way shape or form
Absolute piss take that Happy Mondays aren't there
A A A Calm Down

Nope. Stone Roses, Joy Division and The Smiths are better.
Oasis at #4 is fair
@@jones848 nope not a chance

Another great Manchester band worth a mention here: Doves.
The Smiths - bulletproof. And no fillers in any album. 10/10.

Joy Division was generation defining, they basically achieved what Nirvana achieved a decade later. Definitely number 1.
Agree with you on Joy Division. Nirvana? Nah, the only thing they "achieved" was being the musical equivalent of DDT. Toxic and damaging on all fronts...
Nirvana and Joy Division has VERY similar history.
there are some interviews that kurt cobain said joy division was a powerfull influence
and New Order is like British Foo Fighters lmfao
Aha don’t make me laugh
You know it’s gonna be a hell of a list when The Verve is only ranked at #9.
If it was up to me The Verve wouldn't even be on the list.
The Verve should not even be on this list. And Elbow? Com’on man
They're from Wigan
IMO The Verve is a one hit wonder (Bittersweet Symphony) which happens to be a complete plagiarism of The Last Time (Rolling Stones / Andrew Oldham Orchestra)
@@VineFish Wigan is in greater Manchester.
Anyone saying Oasis should be #1 needs to hit puberty. Good band but both The Stone Roses & The Smiths are infinitely better in every imaginable way. Those 2 bands are so different, it's impossible & pointless to try to compare them. For me The Stone Roses edge it for the love their music oozes opposed to The Smiths' cynicism
I totally agree 👍🏻
RIP Mark E Smith
Ian Brown is my neighbour and its so much fun when he sits in on my own bands jam sessions. He has been quite a help to me and my friends as we develop our sound
Thats fuckin sick whats he like?
My pick -
1. Oasis
2. Joy Division
3. The Stone Roses
4. The Verve
5. The Smiths
New Order is too low on this list!
Stone Roses are the 'Greatest' (genius amateurs in the late 80's, reached amazing heights in 1989, but then terrible depths in 96).
The Smiths will be the best remembered in a huhdred years, and wrote the best lyrics.
New Order / Joy Division the most legendary (because of Ian Curtis) and most experimental (electro sound).
Oasis were the cleverest (well Noel Anyway) at making the most of what they had and becoming the most successful financially...
actually, Hold On...
WHAT ABOUT THE BEE GEES !!!! 😃
Bee gees from Australia

happy mondays probably a close fourth for me (roses, oasis, joy divison)
I love The Stone Roses, but they had one great album, Oasis had at least two great albums and untold massive singles
@Harrison Gent ooooo
All of oasis’s albums went to number 1 in the charts, after be here now the albums had a difference feel but all of them have bangers on them
@@LeoGladmanMusic. I very much agree, plus Oasis has multiple albums worth of amazing b-sides
Oasis at number 4 even though they were the biggest band in the world for 3 years. Doesn't make sense, ridiculous. Easily the biggest to come out of madchester
@@paulanthony5274 stone roses, joy division and smiths were better musicians with a huge influence on other bands.. Oasis were the biggest band for 3 years but musically no new things at all!! they were really good but no innovation or new sounds came from Oasis.. 4 is the good place for them, they can't compete with the other 3..
ON THE SIXTH DAY GOD CREATED MANchester, greetings from Mexico 👐 i love music from manchester
Oasis at 4th are you alright lads???
T P F exactly. How on Earth are they better than new order?
Oasis are THE biggest band ever that came from Manchester, they defined a generation through their music.
Their first two albums are the greatest albums of all time.
How I See It can’t believe know one is talking about New Order coming in 7th...
Overrated
Eliza F bee gees an take that? 😂😂
The Hollies DEFINITELY should have been on the list! ... not even an honorable mention?
Though they are sounding in opening..
I know it, s kinda rude to put Stone Roses without mentioning a lot of theirs sound is actually inspired from Graham Nash Hollies' period but ok, they're featuring at the very beginning of the top with Long Cool Woman In a Black Dress yep. They deserve a LOT MORE love
And Herman's Hermit's
Simply Red And M People, Herman's Hermits, Badly drawn boy, James, Bee Gees, 10 CC, Ting Tings,
Whoever did this needs to give their head a wobble , can't argue with Stone Roses and Oasis but honourable mention James ?.. a band who started in late 80's and still performing and selling out concerts here and abroad .... arguably best band live ...
Agreed! Best band ever.
This is absolutely fantastic. Top 10 great musicians/bands from a single city! This is how Great the British scene is, so many talented and incredible people. I'm from an Eastern European country (Bulgaria) where it would be a struggle to list top 10 great musicians for all time, be it from a single city!
Everything I love about England came from Manchester....thank you Manchester!
Absolutely ridiculous list not to have the Mondays in there when you have the likes of The Verve and Elbow. The Mondays would be in the top 4 for me along with The Roses, The Smiths and Oasis.
What about doves
The Happy Mondays are dog shit.
At Last!!!!
Finally The Fall make a watchmojo list.
Yes, you included New order, Elbow, Buzzcocks, Joy division, Stone Roses and Oasis all in the same list, this is great.
lived for 6 months in Manchester, still have the city and its people in my heart
The Smiths have to be No.1!!

Gotta visit Manchester before I die, damn creative music.
Because it pisses down all the time. Either football or making music. Oh and a lot of drugs too. Only thing its missing is a beach ⛱
Thank you. Seeing Joy division at #3 makes me really really happy
It cured my depression
I was expecting it to be lower, but was delighted to see it top 3

Where’s oasis
I'm fucking glad that James got a mention at least.
James is ridiculously underrated!
Utterly pathetic they never made the list, yet other bands did.
Oh Manchester so much to answer for.
James
LOL Elbow makes list, James, Happy Mondays, Inspirals are "honourable mentions"
how is oasis not top. Everything that came before culminated in them. Sure Stone Roses, Joy Divison and the Smiths may have been more unique and groundbreaking but oasis truly conquered the world with all the previously mentioned influences as their bedrock. They were undoubtedly the greatest english band of the 90s.
So glad you put the fall in the list as I feel they are left off many, tbh I think they are no 1 but I will take that.
Finally i agree with something you guys did, the smiths at number one THANK YOU, JUST THANK YOU
I fully expected The Stone Roses to be number 1...but wow The Smiths. I forgot they were from Manchester. And yes, deserve number one spot.
AlDuke14 it’s strange to think they’re from Manchester seeing as they make upbeat melodies and had a well spoken singer 😂.

I could probably compile a top 50 Manchester bands list, and still miss out a few influential and important bands. How so much talent can come out of one city is outrageous.
Do the list. I like cinematic orchestra oceansize and amplifier
Oasis are definitely the best Manchester band R'kid!

After seeing this list (I didn't know which bands were from Manchester) I have to agree. At least Oasis has two good albums. Verve is number two on my list because I know one good song from them.
Joy division hands down. One of the most influenciel bands in the world

Not a bad list, although I would have certainly ranked New Order higher than Elbow, and Joy Division higher than Stone Roses. Having the smiths as #1 was a good call for sure! So many great bands from Manchester.
The Top 3 were clear. I enjoyed this list
Joy division is the best band from Manchester. They influenced every british band that came after them. So original, great lyrics and music. The smiths were great and so were the stone roses but they are no way better than joy division.
I agree. Concerning impact and legacy, definitely Joy Division. Ian Curtis could've been the dark Dylan of the 80s.

@@PeterParker-gp8bi It doesn't matter what you agree to or like. Oasis are the biggest most successful to come out of Manchester by far

I agree man! But happy Mondays should be in the mother fucking top ten
Fuck that, Oasis are actually so much better
@@mcfcok1683 Oasis have nothing on the smiths. Morrissey and Johnny Marr made of one of the best songwriting duos of all time. If you thoroughly listened to the smiths entire discography you'll change you mind. Oasis are good but only had two good albums and when you compared those albums to any of the smiths albums they don't come close in terms of quality. Joy division were way more influential
Jon Griffin I don't think so, I mean everyone knows Oasis even nowadays but not many people know Joy Division
Matthew Kendall thats why i think they should be higher, not enough people know about them but without them modern music would be very different
Matthew Kendall More bands have had Joy Division as an influence (from U2 to Mychemical romance) than oasis.
I say The Stone Roses first... but hey, what a race with the Smiths!
Je pense aussi à deux autres groupes mancuniens très "honorables" :
- Magazine
- Section 25 (et leur fantastique album, Looking from a Hilltop)
I love The Stone Roses, but to have them over Joy Division is blasphemy. The Stone Roses had one great album, and a pretty forgettable sophomore album. Joy Division has two of the most iconic albums of all time.
Few albums are as artistically great and influential as Unknown Pleasures. And even fewer albums are lyrically great as Closer.
And they both shaped 1979 and 1980 in their own way.
And on just about any music list, you will find them among the Top 5 in each year. Even in one of the greatest years in music history in 1979 with the releases of such classics as
London Calling by The Clash
The Wall by Pink Floyd
Breakfast in America by Supertramp
Highway to Hell by AC/DC
Off the Wall by Michael Jackson
Rust Never Sleeps by Neil Young and Crazy Horse
Cut by The Slits
etc.
And obviously Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division.

For me, it's hard to work out #1 and #2. Morrissey and Marr were an incredible combination and the Smiths are my favorite band. As far as record sales and overall popularity, Oasis has to win this one. Stone Roses were also great, but not #2 great. How James was only honorably mentioned is beyond comprehension. Decent list, better than most. These things are never going to agree entirely with your own list, but this isn't far off. Happy Mondays would be top 5 for me though and Joy Division I still haven't fully clicked with. James would make my top 10 also.
