    When I moved to 1440p gaming earlier this year, I built a machine that could handle 1440@60 Ultra settings with no discernible drops on AAA games. I went with an RX 5700 XT and a Ryzen 5 2600X CPU (Got the CPU on sale for $99. Couldn't pass it up). My monitor puts out 60Hz at 1440p so I turn on Vsync in games and it stays locked at the 60 FPS I wanted while taxing my GPU less. Simple.
    I monitor my GPU usage in games. If I get to a point where the games I want to play are requiring my GPU to work at near 100% in order to maintain my standards, in this case 1440@60 Ultra, I look at upgrading the GPU. Don't compromise your standards and don't settle for bare minimum. Bare minimum means you have to upgrade far sooner than you want to. Don't get caught in a continuous bare minimum upgrade cycle.

    This video just helped cement in my mind that, at current GPU prices, I can wait another gen to upgrade my 970, medium settings won't kill me. Doesn't seem like a lot of difference for nearly 6 years of progress.
    Plus, after the new consoles finally launch, I expect the PC market will suddenly start getting much better graphics performance for their money, including performant & cheaper raytracing if the PS5 including an AMD raytracing solution is to be believed.
    Perhaps AMD is looking to establish their standard in the console space so that over the next 5-10 years these advanced effects will favour their architecture.

That kind of coin to play video games is just not my cup of tea, plus when does the price gouging and excuses stop. Blaming bitcoining and other BS.
      They have convinced gullible (so very gullible) easy wallet gamers that it's just right to pay $1000 for a vid card that will still be relevant in 8 years. The bottleneck in those games are from the raw shader capacity, which is what Nvidia intends that games rely upon so people buy their cards.
      Go DX12 and Vulkan and those requirements are thrown out the window, but they won't, because it's not as profitable.
      The whole point of DX9 to DX10 was feature, and DX10 to DX11 was feature and optimizations.
      DX12 is essentially mainly optimizations, so developers and hardware providers basically go "Meh, it doesn't show you anything differently, so why bother wasting money on it".
      Stagnation of the tech industry is why. Stagnation in game programming is why.
      As game industries grow, the average skill levels of programmers DOES NOT. They just throw more programmers at the problem rather than producing expensive and talented programmers.
      In fact compared to the 90s and 2000s, the average of game programming is at really 'dumb' levels that it's probably not even programming anymore, just scripting languages that is prebuilt to be linguistic as possible for newbies. These aren't self-taught programmers polishing their skills like what hackers do, in making games from scratch and from coding alone... These are 'students' of game design/programming courses or people picking up pre-built engines or development kits and following tutorials.
      Pure programming is mainly english comprehension and mathematic, letters and numbers you see. Some countries (especially Asian) don't rely on latin based lingual text and sometimes even numbers even.

    I bought my 980ti because it was deemed to be "overkill" for 1080p at the time. That's why it's still a great card even today. I'm not going to upgrade until I see an equivalent at a decent price. A 2060 is still so expensive here in Australia, and only just provides 60fps at 1440p.

    • @Mogura87
      @Mogura87 4 роки тому +4

      Can confirm the 980ti has aged surprisingly well for an almost 5 year old Nvidia card. It doesn't exactly crush 1440p anymore but in my experience you can tweak the settings to a pretty stable 60 fps most of the time. This probably doesn't apply to very demanding stuff like Star Citizen or the latest Ubisoft performance killer like Ghost Recon Breakpoint, but I don't play those games anyway. Definitely not optimal for 1440p anymore though, but as you say the price to basically side grade to a 2060 seems like a waste, you'd want to go up to a 2080 to really see a substantial, appreciable leap for 1440p ultra. It'll also just get by for 4k support at 30 fps across the board with some tweaking, though some games will need you to lower the resolution to 1800p for stable performance (AssCreed Odyssey comes to mind). Anyone serious about 4K should've bought a 2080ti in 2018, at this point it's best to wait for the new 3000-series cards or a price drop on the 2080ti. For 1080p there's basically no need to upgrade yet at all for a stable 60 fps at high/ultra.

    I have been gaming on a 1440p monitor for 4 or 5 years now and I have from the start worked at getting 144 fps in 1440p as that was my main goal. I went from 2x 980ti's to a 2080ti. Out of maybe 20 games I randomly swap around on and play 3 or 4 don't go above 80 fps, 2-3 don't go above 100 fps, and the rest are 144 and above. I know that this don't give much information but it really does depend on the game you play. I would still say tho that if you simply lower shadows to medium and AA on a reasonable setting that you can normally play most titles at or above 100 fps with the rest of the settings maxed. So while some of these gpu's can run games like BF at 144 fps in 1440p these same cards will struggle to run other games at above 60 fps maxed in 1440p. I feel like if you want true ultra settings 1440p at 144fps then you do need a 2080ti or possibly the new 3070 that's about to come out. I would also wait to upgrade your gpu right now....

    I'm running a 1070 at 1440... no problem at all. Sure I never have modern games on ultra. I always optimize my settings to be the best visual output or framerate (depending on game). Generation Zero is terribly demanding on ultra setting. I have adapted the full range of low, medium, high and ultra on different options. With screenshots side-by-side, and pixel-peeping I'm having a really hard to spot any major difference... yet I go from 35-45fps to 62-70fps at 1440p. GTX1070 is a good 1440p-performer even today.

      @@justvid366 To be honest, I just think Generation Zero is misunderstood. It's a game developed by around 60 people at a price tag of 29$ (not 59$). With in-house technologies. Still, even with these constraints it's a showcase title in terms of scale and graphical fidelity. I don't actually feel that it is badly optimized, everything on display is pretty darn impressive. volumetric fog, volumetric lights, global illumination, tessellated details, post processing effects, high quality AA etc. I have played a lot of modern games, but the game has some pretty amazing graphics. My partner even thought it was nature photographs rather than in-game screenshots. It's a great looter shooter, I love it and have spent over 120hours in-game. It's actually a great game. I just think people expected a lot of different things from the game. survival, story etc. it wasn't much of those. but as a looter shooter it actually holds up really well.

    • @PixelShade
      @PixelShade 4 роки тому

      @@justvid366 It's just that Avalanche have different divisions. Generation Zero was made by a smaller Swedish division. About the same team size as Ubisoft had for Child of Light. (and the scope of this project is A LOT bigger) But sure, I'm in the game development industry myself, I understand the budget constraints, but I think it's harsh by the gaming community to expect a 500M$ - 1B$ title out of a 30M$ team. Especially since they sell it for 29$. But they did a couple of things wrong. the game should've been early access from the beginning... and around today they should've gone live with the retail product. They should've also communicated what the game was about. there was a lot of unknowns, and the lack of communication during the marketing phase disappointed a lot of players in the end (who expected the game to be something it was not). The game isn't bad, Today the game actually has a very active community with people loving it. :) myself included. And the reviews have definitely skyrocketed over time. And well, if you think a basement indie group could pull off Generation Zero, I don't necessarily think you understand the amount of work required to make such a game.... :) I have spent the last 3 years working on a hi-res 2D platformer. I still have at least 3 years left... these things take time. And we don't do "bad games" to screw with players. We make games because we love it and we want to make products that entertain people. The industry would thrive with less hate and more love towards developers, who are basically pouring their souls into projects with minimum wage or lower.

      The TV is pretty good response time for IPS, games play more comfortably at a windowed 1440p or windowed 1080p 120hz, but it's been a couple months now and I'm going to switch it back out for my 24 inch 1080p 144hz in time for doom eternal.
      I could justify £280 on a TV that can do pc use, but I can't justify £550 for the lg 850 1440 144hz, my current 1080p is fine unless pixel peeping and it lets me easily continue to max any game without worrying about framerate

    This video is partly tailored for me as I have been running 1440p for a few years now and I could never go back to 1080p on my main monitor nor do I want to go to 4k either. Single player games I am ok with 60fps and above. MP games, especially FPS games, I want 144hz locked. And when I bought my 1440p monitor i quickly found out that if I wanted to run native resolution I would need a card that could handle it. So, I bought an GTX1080. It's been doing great for me...but I am on the lookout for something that will come along at the middle tier that will be a substantial improvement so I can keep pace with new games. Especially with the new console gen coming up and that directly impacting PC requirements as well.
    In short, thank you for the work on this as it's rare to even find 1440p benchmarks consistently anywhere that I can trust.

      @Machine Mechine are you one of those "the eye only sees 30fps" people? LOL 40hz is absolutely terrible- 60hz is the bare minimum for a good experience and even that feels a little sluggish. Refresh is more important than resolution.

    • @ketrub
      @ketrub 4 роки тому +5

      @Machine Mechine you also have to remember HL Alyx is VR. 30fps in VR is a great idea if you want to projectile vomit, but if you want to play the game, you need whatever is the refresh rate in your headset (80/90/120hz)

    • @JimBob1937
      @JimBob1937 4 роки тому +2

      @Machine Mechine, Apparently you haven't experienced >= 120 Hz refresh before. If a game is slow movement enough I'll sacrifice frame rate for higher quality visuals... but there is a definite difference in smoothness from 60 to 120, and for certain 30 to 120. I have a 4k 60Hz 75 inch TV (so I can tell 4k from my seating distance) but I run it at 1440p 120Hz as it's a good compromise between resolution and smoothness. It's not about a pissing contest, games just feel considerably smoother at double the refresh (240Hz is pushing it for me though, I don't notice that large of an increase when I tried such a monitor, diminishing returns I suppose). You also reduce your visual and input latency. 30Hz gives you a maximum of 33.33 ms frame to frame latency, and since input is tied to the frame rate in the main game loop, if your input hits between the frame transition of visual info to input action, you're looking at 66.66 ms latency with visual and input summed together. Combined with other sources of latency, like if your TV isn't in a game mode or doesn't have one (likely if it is cheaper and designed for 2160p at 30-60 Hz) , you could easily be looking at 100-250ms added on top of that. Leading to as much as a 316 ms latency, almost a 3rd of a second. You may think that is small, but that is well within the rubber band territory, where controlling something like a mouse cursor feels like a wave moving through a rubber band, move it left and you get a response a 3rd of a second later.
      So, aside from the visual argument, there is a general functional argument as well for going higher end on both your display and your GPU.

The 1070 ti overclocked keeps me comfortable at 75 Hz on most games, though it isn't enough for newer (and sometimes less optimized) games coming out (like cyberpunk and rdr2). I'm now going to go for the RTX 3060 / 3060 Ti when they come out. Will go nicely with my Ryzen 3600.

Except for Metro Exodus for lack of graphics options and RDR2 for obvious reasons. Plus, new cards may be announced later on so it makes sense to wait for something better.

      Yeah, I’ve been using my 1060 6GB at 1440p for about a year now and I’ve actually been really surprised how well it handles it. Only the most taxing games really require major tweaking to get to 60fps. RDR2 is an example. It’s runs about 30fps at Ultra settings at 1440p, but can get up to 45-60fps by making minor changes that don’t really effect fidelity in any meaningful way. Frankly, most games, even brand new games, will run at 60+ right out of the box on Ultra setting or with just 1-2 obvious settings (shadow quality, volumetrics, etc.) moved to Very High or whatever. I’ll probably upgrade when the 3000 series cards come out, but I’m in no huge hurry tbh.
