My opinion: 24 inch or less: 1080p more than good enough 27 inch and above: 1440p 4K: won't recommend for gaming, I think higher frame rate is more important
I would agree except for the fact that 4K does have it's place RN: playing casual, easy-to-run games on a 4K TV. For any AAA or competitive games, I totally agree.
Coming from a person that owns a 1440p 27 inch monitor almost 3 years now , (mostly for gaming) , the difference isn't huge but it's definitely noticable . And yes it does make a difference in games . They just appear much sharper and cleaner .
@Filthy Casual yeah the high resolution high frame rate is not that intelligent. My monitor supports up to 165hz 1440p but realistically speaking , what games can run at this frame rate and is my gpu capable of doing it ? Probably not many . Plus , more than 60-90 frames for most games is pointless and you don't see a difference (expect eSports) . The only reason I went with 1440p 165hz is because I wanted to play both eSport tittles at high frames but also get the higher res for triple A tittles and other games. If you want something exclusively for eSports though, then 1080p 240hz is the way to go. And lastly of you are PS5 or Xbox series X user which again is not worth to buy a monitor like this , just buy a 55 inch or bigger tv to fully enjoy your games
@@patriktoth3346 yeah although it's the same resolution , because it is smaller in size the image will actually appear sharper and better . But also keep in mind that the distance between you and the screen also plays a role (the further you are the better the image resolution-wise)
That is actually intriguing... I've got three monitors 27" with 1080p, transfer from 21". I must say I don't see any blurry parts. Maybe that is because I didn't deal with 1440p with that screen size.
24" Inch 1080p works more than well if you unsure of what to buy and it's cheap, I been a gamer for years and I used to play with a 60hz 24" screen and competed in all type of games, always been able to reach the best weapons n gear n ranks in all of the games. A better screen will help, but it won't you make you much better. It will really benefit players who already is at a TOP tier. So spend money wisely don't buy things you really don't need.
It's not a matter of NEEDING that shiny new technology, it's a matter of WANTING that new technology, even if your hardware's performance suffers because of it. Myself, I want the best performance in ALL my games, and if that means lowering my resolution to get max frames, then that's exactly what I'll do.

i tried 4k on my monitor since it did have 4k, but it wasnt intentional because i had 2k 144hz with freesync on which was the best for this monitor but when i turned off vsync i got the option to use 4k with 60hz and not 144hz so i turned it on and i dont know why but the apps and background on my monitor looked weird... in games i play a lot for example minecraft when i had 4k on there were very odd bugs that i havent seen before, so idrk why thats a thing but im guessing its probably because it is just minecraft.

So I made a good decision with this one. I previously had 24" 1080p monitors and decided to go with 27" three years ago. I was thinking if 1440p is really worth it. Good that I decided to go with 27" 1440p monitors. For games I have TN panel and for photo editing I have IPS. In some future I'm thinking to upgrade gaming monitor to HDR IPS, but will probably keep 1440p resolution.
There is a right answer. Ips panel , and 110 PPI to work , code , read , game on for many hours and not get eye strain. There is a site that calculates PPI based on size of monitor / resolution. If u go over 27` you need curved monitor.
As a software dev, I would never touch IPS tbh. Within the company I work for, we just changed all our IPS to VA panel monitors. Much less eyestrain and headach issues. There was a recent research about it how bad IPS panels are on your eyes. I had a alienware 2720hfa before and a 2521hfa. They were both straining my eyes big time. Then I switched to acer nitro vg240yp. Still eye strain. Then tried a VA panel and OMG. Such a relief. I am now working and playing with a s2722dgm. Pretty good response time compared to IPS panels. It's so damn close to a odyssey g7. Finally, I don't need breaks from coding either.

I'm playing 1080p on a 32inch. Not bad, honestly. Depends on the quality of the panel and tech you get. I got an asus tough and they have some kind of pixel density clarity thing you can mess with. I can't complain, even my friend with his 1440p monitor said it looks good.
I actually found out for gaming I'm perfectly fine with 1080p at 27". Immersion is improved over 24" monitor and yet I don't have to spend extra on my GPU to get 60fps as I would have to at 1440p. However the big downside to 27" 1080p is browsing, text clarity etc.
I can agree with this. I have a 43" 1080p TV that will do a 75hz overclock, it's perfectly fine for kicking back on the couch and gaming but if you try to use it for web browsing then the text will give you a headache.

What David doesn't mention: Games and/or the driver change the mipmap bias with the selected resolution. That's causing the higher sharpness. So you can get a similar sharpness on a 1080p monitor with using a negative mipmap bias. Though you shouldn't set this bias too low because you can get moire shimmering.

A great and informative video, thank you. I'm an old man (60) who struggles with tech yet loves gaming! Just this week I decided to upgrade my pc, here's what I've gone for. One thing I took ages deciding was the monitor size, 27 or 32 was my choice. I got 27 in the end because of pixel density and because of my eyesight need to sit a little bit closer to the monitor. I think the viewing distance is an important factor. Cheers 😁
Sir Nicholas - I agree 😉 in my opinion at 27” it’s just so much sharper and prettier at 1440P. But both of these monitors are better than the ones I use at work so it’s all relative a guess! Plus what your GPU can handle is obviously important too!
I need to make some room so I can try my old Iiyama Vision Master Pro 22" Diamondtron with a modern gfx card (RX580). That CRT is a beast and is weighing down a shelf in the box room. Great video! I picked up a 32" 1440p monitor a few months ago, and find it's a bit too big for the resolution - especially when watching 1080p media. 27" is definitely the sharpness sweetspot.
I used to game on a 32" 1080p TV, switched to an Acer Predator 1440p gaming monitor. The color looked much better on the TV, but the 165hz refresh-rate felt much better on the Predator. That made me realize, looks do matter in gaming, and have a few extra milliseconds of delay is not a huge price to pay for more vibrant colors.
I agree with you, I miss my ips monitor, the colors was so bright and vivid and more important natural, now I have va panel but 144hz, and it has color but there is a thing that is Not ok, and I really miss the ips colors.

If you're bothering about asking that question, I can answer it by experience: 1080p is enough, although if you go to 1440p you will not come back. It's obviously better to have a higher pixel density, but you're gonna have to pay more for that monitor (a lot more), and you're gonna have less frames than usual. Let me remind you that, even though 1440p is better for general usage, most movies are either gonna be in 1080p or 4k. If anything, 1080p 21:9 might give you the vibe you're hoping for.
@@yolu22 16:9? I would personally prefer the 1080p. It's up to you, but honestly I don't bother 1080p to watch movies and play. Obviously 1440 will look better, but you're gonna need a better graphics card, and if you want to use it's full potential when watching movies you'll have to download them at 4k, which can go up to 20GB per file. I don't see no pixels on my monitor, but once I got to use higher resolutions, whenever I came back to 1080p I started being bothered about it. It's just about getting used to it. (Good timing btw, I literally just bought a 34" 21:9 1080p monitor yesterday, how interesting...)
I mean with that thought, it doesn't need to be a 27'' to begin with. 24'' 1080p would do just fine. Of course unless you're far enough away that spotting the difference between 1080p and 1400p on 27'' is beyond the eye anyway.

I have a 49 inch LG HDTV, and I am still impressed with the resolution, except for the grey blacks. I keep seeing gamers talking about monitors and high refresh rates, but 50-60fps is still very pleasant to me, but not 30fps which I try my best to avoid. I am upgrading my PC right now, and my TV is not on my upgrade list...for now. At the age of 50 I now need glasses to read small print, but I don't use them for the TV (yet), so perhaps that's why I am still content. If I didn't hate public places so much, I would go into a store and compare for myself.
Exactly! I'm happy with anything over 40FPS and I can't see the difference after 50 FPS. Not only does this help me avoid upgrades for a longer time, it also cuts down on Power costs.
You can save yourself some money by just staying away 2 ft away from the monitor. Well if you can afford it and your GPU can handle 1440p then go for it.
Tbh, another advantage of going a little higher-end on GPU with a 1080p monitor is that you can supersample, and then if that GPU no longer is capable of properly doing 1440p, just drop down to native resolution with anti-aliasing and you're still doing quite well.
I actually thought about this a lot before settling for a 27 inch 1080p 60hz monitor. Upgrading from a 21 inch 1080p screen, it felt more pixelated despite the larger screen space. But I quickly got over it, and it seemed normal to me a few days later. So until I win the jackpot, I'm staying away from 1440p or high refresh rates. God knows what else I'll have to buy to game at those settings, not to mention the power consumption.
I'm going from a 4k back to 1080p. I had a Samsung oddesy g70 but as it turns out the quality of the monitor is pretty bad. It broke and I was looking to spend 200 max. So I ended up with a 1080p 240hz. No idea how I'll like it but I hope its gonna be alright. (both are 27inch) I get a 30day trail on it so no harm done in trying. Would be a bit of a waste on the gpu lol, but 2k monitors cost to much let alone 4k. I did learn to not buy any samsung products anymore. It lasted a little over 1 year for a 700 euro monitor.
@@zgbenzz I have been using my 1080p 240hz display for a bunch of days and im pretty happy with it. I honestly dont see the diffrence in games with 4k vs 1080p at ultra/ exteme settings ( or what they end up calling the highest preset) while I do notice how much lower the gpu requirements are and how much cheaper the monitors are. with regular desktop useage the 4k did look a bit better and was nicer to use but nothing worth breaking the bank over. more demanding games I end up at around 120-140 fps and some games that are a bit older I get to fully use the 240hz like in fh4. I think I will wait until the 7800X3D gets a lot cheaper and then upgrade to that, use optimized settings and I would reccomend 1080p high refresh for sure. with the 240hz refresh it all looks very smooth, and due to it being 1080p you dont need a super new gpu and ones from a few generations ago are more than you need. like a 5700XT for example. the only issue is the Vram buffer being to small, I do usually need to put the texture settings and other Vram settings down a few from the highest, which is to bad because textures dont cost performance unless you have a card with not enough Vram, which 8 is sadly to little in fh5. but even then with the optimized settings, and considering it cost me 75 euros to get the 5700XT its no problem, even if it was 150 I would be happy with the performance I am getting.
I don't play many games where you need to snipe/attention to detail is really important, so I prefer to have more frames and performance over picture quality
I have 27" 1440p, Cyberpunk runs great in 1080p with DLSS with anything from 0.5 to 1.0 sharpening! Looks fantastic, but YES, some games WILL look blurry without the correct settings! You can always add image sharpening from Nvidia Control Panel !

@@daluven 70% higher pixel density. In games like highly modded Fallout 4/NV or The Witcher 3 - it shows. And those are the kinds of games I play mostly. So - it was worth the money. For me.
@@daluven I jumped from a 1080p 24 inch monitor to a 1440p 31.5 inch monitor, and I have to say that I can't see too much of a difference in clarity, but that is probably because I jumped from a smaller 1080p monitor to a bigger 1440p monitor. When increasing resolution and monitor size, the increase in resolution is offset by the increase in size, so if you're jumping to a bigger monitor then an increase in resolution is worth it. Otherwise, I can't speak on the benefits. I can say that when I booted up my monitor for the first time, my computer was set to 1080p, so it was really blurry, but comparing a 1080p picture on a 1440p 31.5 inch monitor is not exactly a fair comparison of 1080p.
i got dual 32" 1080p monitors cuz they were around $150 each, with 165hz, freesync, 1ms response all that jazz. Bigger than i was initially intending my monitors to be, but i thought the bargain was too good to pass up. Ive never really used higher resolution monitors and the only time i saw any real low res artifacts was when i used nvidea surround to play doom. Other than that it looks fine enough for most games. I do use really strong glasses so maybe thats it, but i still see just fine
Yeah, if you have strong glasses for myopia, it is basically as if you are using 27" 1080p monitors, since your eyeglasses make it smaller. I am in same boat and this is one of the annoyances I have, to get similar results you simply have to get bigger monitors... Well, or do a eye surgery/get contacts.
The proper answer: - The ideal resolution for a 27" monitor at "normal" PC gaming viewing distance >=52cm is 4K because if that is the point where if you have 20/20 vision you cannot distinguish the pixel (aka becoming what Apple calls Retina) - However if you are playing competitive games like PUBG (which need situational awareness and high FPS), even a 2080ti will not be enough for 4K, so you are forced to get a 1440p monitor instead. There are many options with excellent effective response times like 27GL850 and OMEN X27 - Now if you play RTS games where 60fps is good enough go for 4K - 1080p 27" is not worth it, visual acuity is at >=105cm! Even if you sit that far you lose effective FOV because the display will cover a smaller angle of your vision, meaning you waste your eye coverage. Even at 24" you get worse PPI than 27"@1440p. 1080p is perfect for 17.3" gaming laptops though. Personally in practice as a PUBG player with a 27GL850 and 20/20 vision at 50cm distance needs to focus really hard to distinguish pixels of a solid image.

@@BOZ_11 yes, you might, the old iMac is 5k on a 27inch monitor and that's how it becomes retina. 4K is a lot of pixels, but if you are not at 300 ppi, your eye can see the pixels, hence apple going 5k instead of 4k. 5K is actually the best resolution for a 27 inch monitor. Above is useless.
There already are suggested standards for pixel size and they were established like 20+ years ago. 480p upto 14", 720p upto 17", 1080p upto 23", 1440p upto 36, etc. This system assumes viewer distance increases with size also.

Though you shouldn't set this bias too low because you can get moire shimmering.

A great and informative video, thank you. I'm an old man (60) who struggles with tech yet loves gaming! Just this week I decided to upgrade my pc, here's what I've gone for.
If anything, 1080p 21:9 might give you the vibe you're hoping for.
you can downscale 4k movie to 1440p. And you will get basically quality of native 2k.

You can save yourself some money by just staying away 2 ft away from the monitor. Well if you can afford it and your GPU can handle 1440p then go for it.
I think I run around at 480P, I think 1080P is fine
Tbh, another advantage of going a little higher-end on GPU with a 1080p monitor is that you can supersample, and then if that GPU no longer is capable of properly doing 1440p, just drop down to native resolution with anti-aliasing and you're still doing quite well.
@Max_CSD Loradon Only that less and less games have a good implementation of MSAA. And 2x2 SSAA on a 1080p display will still look better than no AA.
It looks more pixelated because the same resolution is being stretched across a bigger screen
I'm going from a 4k back to 1080p. I had a Samsung oddesy g70 but as it turns out the quality of the monitor is pretty bad. It broke and I was looking to spend 200 max.

Good review. Price is why I went with the 1080p 27 inch. I never see the pixels lol.
depending on your budget and graphics card, 1080p is most of the time ther better option for fps and still looking good
The proper answer:
- The ideal resolution for a 27" monitor at "normal" PC gaming viewing distance >=52cm is 4K because if that is the point where if you have 20/20 vision you cannot distinguish the pixel (aka becoming what Apple calls Retina)
- However if you are playing competitive games like PUBG (which need situational awareness and high FPS), even a 2080ti will not be enough for 4K, so you are forced to get a 1440p monitor instead. There are many options with excellent effective response times like 27GL850 and OMEN X27
- Now if you play RTS games where 60fps is good enough go for 4K
- 1080p 27" is not worth it, visual acuity is at >=105cm!
Rare to see someone else that understands pixel density.
