Thank you for this awesome review! Your reviewing technique holds up even now 3 years later. I appreciate how much you matched the specs of both screens and ensured the variables you tested were isolated.
Thanks for explaining the pixel density and also comparing pixelation side by side, which no other youtubers does or doing it even now.
Daft question I got an old intel iMac and don’t use it anymore as a computer. But, it’s got a lovely 5k display. Is there a way I can use it as a monitor at all? 🤔 😂
My opinion: 24 inch or less: 1080p more than good enough
27 inch and above: 1440p
4K: won't recommend for gaming, I think higher frame rate is more important
4k is not for now, until gpu's can do 4k 60fps at a decent pricepoint 4k will be only for the few with expensive gpu's
I would agree except for the fact that 4K does have it's place RN: playing casual, easy-to-run games on a 4K TV. For any AAA or competitive games, I totally agree.
What about 24 inch 1440p 144hz monitor?
@@TheBinklemNetwork Why would i be surprised? I meant when they release gpu's that can do 4k 60hz on all games minimum.

Coming from a person that owns a 1440p 27 inch monitor almost 3 years now , (mostly for gaming) , the difference isn't huge but it's definitely noticable . And yes it does make a difference in games . They just appear much sharper and cleaner .
@Filthy Casual yeah the high resolution high frame rate is not that intelligent. My monitor supports up to 165hz 1440p but realistically speaking , what games can run at this frame rate and is my gpu capable of doing it ? Probably not many . Plus , more than 60-90 frames for most games is pointless and you don't see a difference (expect eSports) . The only reason I went with 1440p 165hz is because I wanted to play both eSport tittles at high frames but also get the higher res for triple A tittles and other games. If you want something exclusively for eSports though, then 1080p 240hz is the way to go. And lastly of you are PS5 or Xbox series X user which again is not worth to buy a monitor like this , just buy a 55 inch or bigger tv to fully enjoy your games
Gonna change my 32 inch 1080p TV to a 27 inch 1080p monitor. I had a 24 inch monitor before and damn... Looked pretty cool
@@patriktoth3346 yeah although it's the same resolution , because it is smaller in size the image will actually appear sharper and better . But also keep in mind that the distance between you and the screen also plays a role (the further you are the better the image resolution-wise)

Very cool your video and point of view. I've had this question in the past, I've chosen the midterm 2560x1080 with a 34 inch ultrawide display at 75hz. But I had to invest in a more recent graphics card, because the one I was using didn't handle this new demand. Hug and success.
Hi can u help me with this? I am using a 1660 and planning to buy a monitor to use before I changed a new GPU. The monitor is 27inch 1440p 144Hz, will my screen get screentear or screen delay or the screen will just showing low fps as my gpu cant achieve full performance on 1440p?
@@Unknownthewiu Idk how the 1660 performs but you can always just change the in game resolution to 1080p if it's not playable. But having low fps won't add screen tear, maybe if you're getting under 60 fps then do what I mentioned above
@@aidand907 I am ok with the low fps problem , but I don't want any screen etar as I bought the 27inch 1440p with 144Hz which my 1660 cant run full. So i am worried. So wont have any problem right ? except the low fps
@@Unknownthewiu the 1660 super cannot reach 140fps in 1440p on modern titles. There’s hundreds of titles that came out in the past which it might run well, but any triple A release after 2020 is going to see very poor performance in 1440p on a 1660s. You’ll get the benefits of 144hz outside of gaming though, so that’s up to you. You won’t get screen smearing or tearing if you get a good monitor. Though in this sort of situation if you have the money for a 1440p 144hz then I’d personally spend it more towards a high end 1080p 144hz panel, or even a higher end 1440p 75hz panel.

That is actually intriguing... I've got three monitors 27" with 1080p, transfer from 21". I must say I don't see any blurry parts. Maybe that is because I didn't deal with 1440p with that screen size.

Might be a stupid question, but... Are two 1080p 27inch 75Hz monitors for office, overkill? Or it will look 'stretched' or 'blury' and a bad choice? Are two 1080p 24inch 75hz better? I know that it's important for games to look 'sharp' but will it be impactful 'blurry' on office too?
If I were you, I would personally get a smaller monitor, and the reason why is because the larger the monitor, the more pixels you will be able to notice because the pixels are going to be stretched across a larger screen if that makes sense. I would get the two 24 inch 1080p 75hz monitors.

What David doesn't mention:
Games and/or the driver change the mipmap bias with the selected resolution.
That's causing the higher sharpness.
So you can get a similar sharpness on a 1080p monitor with using a negative mipmap bias.
Though you shouldn't set this bias too low because you can get moire shimmering.

@@aqilafzal3091 just buy a high refresh rate 2k monitor. if its a high refresh rate one it's not going to matter what the resolution is. you'll have that capability. then when you get a better gpu you just bump up the resolution and keep the high refresh rate.

Thank you very much for this, really helped my understanding.
It depends on the form factor, for 21:9 ultrawide, idk if 1080p is blurry, even on a 34 inch. You can always upscale and use more anti alias to increase your real estate and get the best of both worlds
Though 1080 is the vertical resolution so the panel should look the same for the same height regardless the width
@@costascostas1760 In all honesty, the wider you go, the faster the refresh rate and response time you should aim for. That's why I mention that it depends on the form factor, ultrawide is usually about 10 inches extra but height is the same, so you cant trust the number of inches, you gotta look at the form factor + inches and then decide.
For example: on a 24" 1080p is fine if the format is 16:9 at 60hz (you can always go higher hz), but on a 34" ultrawide 1080p may look a lot better if you have a refresh rate higher than 100hz, just because each line is longer and it will take longer to fill, so when you do it faster it compensates :)
When I changed from 1080p 27" to 1440p 27" it was like a charm, especially taken into account that I mostly played Battle Brothers.

Bigger than i was initially intending my monitors to be, but i thought the bargain was too good to pass up. Ive never really used higher resolution monitors and the only time i saw any real low res artifacts was when i used nvidea surround to play doom. Other than that it looks fine enough for most games. I do use really strong glasses so maybe thats it, but i still see just fine
Yeah, if you have strong glasses for myopia, it is basically as if you are using 27" 1080p monitors, since your eyeglasses make it smaller. I am in same boat and this is one of the annoyances I have, to get similar results you simply have to get bigger monitors... Well, or do a eye surgery/get contacts.

A great and informative video, thank you. I'm an old man (60) who struggles with tech yet loves gaming! Just this week I decided to upgrade my pc, here's what I've gone for. Your thoughts on this reminds me of when people started buying 65+ inch 1080P TV’s
A couple of years ago I upgraded parts of my system. The computer store manager talked me into getting a 24" monitor instead 27" monitor for that same reason. All I play is world of warships, so I wasn't sure if I made the right decision.
There already are suggested standards for pixel size and they were established like 20+ years ago. 480p upto 14", 720p upto 17", 1080p upto 23", 1440p upto 36, etc. This system assumes viewer distance increases with size also. You will quickly notice how many standard sizes we see in stores try and stretch those suggested limits.
I assume those 480p are either for 640x480 or for non-square pixels and aimed at TV signals.
1440p at 36?!??! no way. maybe 32 with really good IPS panel. but for me 1440p max is 28"
I've been running 27" 1080p for last year or so, and honestly I think its fine, but now I'm in for a 2nd monitor either to get as a secondary or turn my current one into secondary. I fear that if i got 144hz 27" 1440p, I won't be able to go back
That inkling is completely correct. Recently upgraded to a 29” curved 1440p monitor and I have to say that I instantly knew I could never compromise on a monitor again. (Also upgraded from 75hz to 144hz)

We need Anna's thoughts as well on any monitor comparison testing now.
Sir Nicholas - I agree 😉 in my opinion at 27” it’s just so much sharper and prettier at 1440P. But both of these monitors are better than the ones I use at work so it’s all relative a guess! Plus what your GPU can handle is obviously important too!

That is very true. I will definitely include her from now on. 😁
@Sir Nicholas you played cok?
@@AnnaDoes It's so much better even at 24 inches too
I think I’m a lower Rez higher fps guy. I like ultra settings. I have i7 9700k with 3060ti and it can do most games at 1440p average 100 fps but I’m not a fan of pushing my stuff too hard. I could afford it when I got it and I can’t afford to replace it
There are so many internal fail safes built within the hardware that it will shut down before it does any real damage. Overclock it to the gills.
Yea it’s not worth the risk, and from what I’ve heard it can reduce the lifespan of your stuff
Thanks for this great comparison, this is a great help for me what I buy now.....thx al lot.

you had me at `waifu edition card´, ballsy move, i respect that.
Thanks for this video. Canceled the order for my monitor and bought a different one thanks to you. 🙌🏼
Thank you for the review!
What I'm getting from this Is to get the 25 inch Mobiuz BenQ monitor. More pixel density then the 27 inch model and it should work just fine for my PS5. They're fairly cheap and great monitors.
I have played Dota 2 and LoL for more than 10k hours combined, and I’ve switched from a 60Hz to a 144Hz display, and the extra smoothness really, really helps during team fights. Much more than the resolution.
Same, 144hz made me a much better player once I got it

@@dominic-qq7mj How did it make you better? Never really played moba's so it'd be cool to see what the benefits of a higher refresh rate is for them?
Great video thank you. 08:30 60 vs 144 hz the difference is noticeable for me. I guess once you upgrade going back is always hard.
I have a 49 inch LG HDTV, and I am still impressed with the resolution, except for the grey blacks. I keep seeing gamers talking about monitors and high refresh rates, but 50-60fps is still very pleasant to me, but not 30fps which I try my best to avoid. I am upgrading my PC right now, and my TV is not on my upgrade list...for now. At the age of 50 I now need glasses to read small print, but I don't use them for the TV (yet), so perhaps that's why I am still content. If I didn't hate public places so much, I would go into a store and compare for myself.
Exactly! I'm happy with anything over 40FPS and I can't see the difference after 50 FPS. Not only does this help me avoid upgrades for a longer time, it also cuts down on Power costs.
Lol from a "professional glass wearer" who forgets to renew his prescription yearly, definitely agree with the glasses example at 5:38

Miretazam thanks I figured it out.
Im playing only e-sports fps games, i have 1080p 27" 72hz monitor so im used to 27" 1080p. I want to buy 1080p 27" 165hz monitor but i know that same monitor with 24" will work better. Do you think me changing 27" to 24" will be downgrade and it will be hard for me to play good? Or maybe better choose that 27" 1080p
If you want to see the image sharply get an eye test and add reading glasses to pick up close detail
depending on your budget and graphics card, 1080p is most of the time ther better option for fps and still looking good
1440p is probably the sweets spot. Any more is a bit overkill unless it’s for video editing or photography
i tried 4k on my monitor since it did have 4k, but it wasnt intentional because i had 2k 144hz with freesync on which was the best for this monitor but when i turned off vsync i got the option to use 4k with 60hz and not 144hz so i turned it on and i dont know why but the apps and background on my monitor looked weird... in games i play a lot for example minecraft when i had 4k on there were very odd bugs that i havent seen before, so idrk why thats a thing but im guessing its probably because it is just minecraft.
@@maksgmr6885 If i lower the resolution in the 2k monitor 75hz. Can i eventually get a higher fps at 144hz with just 1080p resolution?
@@aqilafzal3091 You can get however many frames as your GPU allows, you just can't see the difference since your monitor can't output more than 75 fps.
@@TheJupiteL actually more fps = less input lag because monitor has more frames to choose from
Trying to run 4k is about 0.3 yotta frames per year
it also mainly depends on the power of your GPU if you're running a RTX 3070 or 3080 you're allready in the 1440p Gaming zone wich would mean you would allready be gaming at a good Frame rate At 1440p and would have no need to game at 1080p 240hz unless you're a competitive pro gamer that needs all the Possible frames you can get while compromising absolutely everything you can in resolution because you need to
THIS
Your opinion is a lot like all others ive heard. I think your on point with this.
I came here to watch, again this topic. Considering getting a 1080p monitor as a secondary monitor and monitor to play some older games which the native resolution of 1080p has better integer scaling than 1440p.
Watching wonder if I should get a 24 inch (yes) 1080p or not. Or perhaps a 27..right? How bad could it be, image quality/sharpness compared to 1440p? Then I remembered I actually used for over 3 years a 40 inch 1080p monitor (TV) without any real issues, so obviously a 24 or even a 27 should be fine.
Great video!
I picked up a 32" 1440p monitor a few months ago, and find it's a bit too big for the resolution - especially when watching 1080p media. 27" is definitely the sharpness sweetspot.
1080p on a 1440p monitor might look worse than it would on a 1080p monitor depending on the scaling though
@@nicklasmartos928 It definitely does in my case.
This was great video for me, I was looking exactly for this, thank you
Thanks. This is exactly what I wanted to know.
That's exactly what i was looking for. Thanks
Thanks to image sharpening I think 1080p at 27" is a solid choice. It will also allow the GPU to perform well for longer.
this was a really well made video, thank you for the effort you put into this as i found it very useful
Thank you Dawid! But please you or anyone, can help me on that? If the dilemma is IPS in 1080 or VA in 1440, we still prefer the 1440, or we prefer the better quality of IPS panel? Not so much for gaming. Word writing/reading, photo editing and video editing.
LG 34GL750-B Curved Gaming Monitor 34" FHD 2560x1080 VS Xiaomi Mi Curved Curved Gaming Monitor 34" QHD 3440x1440.
Who's the winner here?
Please...
I’ve been doing a lot of research into this and it’s gonna have to be IPS. The VA panel has some really nice features that ultimately become pointless in light of its other issues.
It has great contrast but it doesn’t matter because the colors aren’t consistent, it doesn’t matter how red something looks in a white background if it starts to look pink towards the bottom of the screen.
It has really dark blacks and doesn’t have IPS glow, but it doesn’t matter how dark something can look if it isn’t consistently dark everywhere. It also doesn’t matter how much detail you can get in a dark scene if all of that detail disappears the moment that the image is no longer static.
IPS has issues and I absolutely hate IPS glow, but it’s much better to deal with the downsides of IPS than it is to live with the downsides of VA.
The thing that sucks, is that say for example you have a QHD 1440P 27-32Inch you need to be able to have a stronger GPU to support that at atleast 60FPS+, whereas if you opt for a smaller screen you can use 1080p and not have to have more power for the same image, I guess it depndant on if you want a bigger screen and to sacrifice framerate.
1440p 120fps+ for online multiplayer, I just use my 1080p TV an use DSR for scaling up to 8k 60fps for single player stuff ;)
I don't play many games where you need to snipe/attention to detail is really important, so I prefer to have more frames and performance over picture quality
@UA-cam Is a Joke umm cost?
I bought my first gaming monitor yesterday 1080p 27" and I'm so happy and satisfied for it.
Are u still happy ? Should i go with 24" for better clarity or go with bigger screen ?
@@talhamerttufan7140 after one year, my eyes wants more.. 2k resolution is better for 27", 1080 is for 24", for better clarity.
I just bought a 32" 1440p monitor and it's insane how much sharper the image is (before watching this video). I have some pretty high settings on monster hunter. Own a 5700 xt and it's crazy to see the difference. However i it is using 7.2 of my 8gb vram and gave me a warning. Playing rocket league I noticed some crashes, and I'm wondering if my graphics card isn't up to par with this type of demand. On 1080p im getting 111 fps on monster hunter and when I switch to 1440p I'm only getting 66. Don't completely understand why there is a fps difference other than it must take more power to produce such a sharp image. Great video and definitely left understanding more than I did when i started. Subbed.
It's sharpness is the same ppi as 1080p@24" so must be placebo unless your 1080p monitor was 27" or above
