This was a very informative video but considering low latencies and higher infinity fabric clock speeds seem to matter more, it might be better just to spend less on the RAM and buy a better CPU or GPU with that extra cash. Also I don't think the differences are that dramatic especially with a lot of the workstation benchmarks. Now this does have an advantage over Intel atleast I would assume because RAM can be further optimized for better performance.

    • @pwnage44
      @pwnage44 3 роки тому +9

I'm just a casual so it doesn't matter all that much to me. If I got a Ryzen 9 3900X and 16GB of only 2400MHz RAM, I would not be complaining! The guts of the processor and the amount of RAM matters way more and contributes like 90% of the overall performance, no?

How safe is it to tweak your memory? I have been tuning my memory since the launch of zen2. It's takes painstaking long to test. I tested with prime95. Sometimes I get error after 7 hours.
After finaly getting to the tertiary timing settings 1 of my 2 memory dimms failed and gives instant errors.
I never changed the voltage (used the xmp 1.35v and also used the xmp rated mhz). Did one of my dimms degrade to destruction just by tightening the timings?

    TL:DR,
If you run 1:1 using the base clock of your RAM and matching the infinity fabric speed, (2400 RAM and 1200 IF, for example) you will get a very stable performance that will improve as you reach higher RAM speeds. If you go over/under the 1:1 ratio, then make sure to adjust your RAM timing to compensate for latency.

How do i do that, i got 5900x now, just put Corsair LPX 2400mhz(from the old system) on the correct timings and voltage but the ratio is still at 1:12. This ram will go on sale with the old parts and i will have to get new ones, thinking of 32gb of 3200mhz or 3600mhz (from what i saw there is no notable difference between them in performance) but i can't get my head on how to solve the infinity stuff or with what ram does it work.

Also don't expect to get to 1900, or even 1800 infinity fabric for granted. It is possible on some motherboards, but unlikely. Choose mobo carefully ! Some people having problems to get to 1800 !!! But some got to 1900 without much problem and said it is stable, but performance gain was negligible and higher temps. 1800 is probably safe for daily use.

@@wotever99ninynine as I commented, I wish people would stop getting tricked into believing that RAM overclocking or "gaming RAM" is going to impact their performance. You should get a reliable and decent RAM kit for sure, but having the best CPU/GPU combo that you can afford and as much RAM as possible is always better.
I've had my own custom computer since the Athlon x2 and I've never bothered getting into RAM overclock since most of the performance gains are basically from overclocking the CPU and GPU due to impact of the internal cache has over external "slow" RAM has.
You are always better off having more RAM then faster RAM in a day to day basis.
If RAW speed is what you want then sure go for it, buy the ultimate overclocking kit...but just like the "insane" CPU overclock often run on one or two sticks or RAM, you'll find out that it's easier to face instability and you having to compromise on some stuff (dual vs quad channel).
I'm not saying that you won't see any improvement, I'm just saying that you'll be better off having a 32GB RAM disk with 20GB of cache on your SSD and still have 12GB spare for the OS @2100-3200, compared to getting a 16GB kitt of 4200Mhz @ 6969Mhz Inifinityswags.

Abhay Pratap Singh Agreed. Whatever they’re paying Anthony, they should probably pay him more. He appears to be the only one there with the chops to bring LTT a high level of technical credibility. Not to say that the rest of the crew isn’t great, excepting Jake who is white supremacist trash that they should’ve dropped instead of abetting. Linus certainly has a lot of networking chops too. And everyone else has great knowledge and skills in their fields and plays their roles well in creating great content as a team. But Anthony is quite clearly the IT wizard of the shop, presumably keeping everyone else’s tools working properly. And he still manages to make excellent content himself, even if he’s not presenting it. Perhaps most of all, he fills these roles without being a totally pompous jerk, which has value in and of itself.
Anthony: You should negotiate a raise. You’re valuable enough to them that I don’t think you’ll get much pushback.

Brad Haines no it’s the CPU, more sticks strains the memory controller, which is on the CPU, not the board...
For instance, good luck getting his speeds to work on Intel 8700k or 7700k, their memory controllers kind of top out around 4000-4200 for really good memory controller binning on those CPUs and with 4 sticks that’s going to put too much load to run above 3600 (so they probably won’t run that tight of timings).
The board is just traces at this point (preferably you use 2 slot only boards for best overclocking thanks to more optimized EMI layout due to its simple nature and shorter trace runs, it’s just easier with half the wiring)

I have a Ryzen 7 3800x and I want to upgrade the ram and motherboard
    What motherboard should i pick:
    - GIGABYTE AORUS X570 ELITE
    - ASRock X570 Extreme4
    - MSI MEG X570 ACE
    - MSI MEG X570 UNIFY
I chose these because they go up to 3200 Mhz without OC for the RAM. Any other good options? Ace is the most expensive here and i don't want to go higher than that
    As for ram, I chose:
    G.Skill Trident Z Neo 16GB DDR4 3200MHz CL14 1.35v Dual Channel Kit

yes, the controller is the same, but the infinity fabric might not clock so high, because I guess AMD binns it. 1800MHz should be possible but dont expect more than that

It's relevant for all Ryzen products since they all have the Infinity Fabric structure unlike Intel which turns off it's Hyperthreading structure for certain CPUs.

If I could get this turbo charged Niken it would make my choice of motorcycle easy. It's beautiful, great work you did on this surprising invention.
I am currently deciding between the Yamaha Niken GT and the Indian FTR 1200 to get in the next few months

I got some cheapo 3600MHz for my... 3600, and just tightened the timings to within an inch of their lives.
Went from 18-22-22-42 to 16-19-16-36. Very happy - didn't even have to up the DRAM or SoC voltage.

This just makes memory overclocking more appealing so we weren’t have a memory shortage.
Unless everyone BREAKS their ram kits trying this

Great vid, does this logic still hold true for the Ryzen 5000 series or do we need an updated video?

That makes so much sense now! I've got Corsair Vengeance RGB 32GB (2x16). And prolly the first things you'll ask is why do I need 32GB. Well first of all because I use one PC for gaming and work, including heavy tasks like rendering non stop in heavy software. Anyway apart from the 32Gb, I was also aiming to buy RAM faster than the 2400Mhz basic kit I've been using. So it turns out that since I have 2nd gen Ryzen processor it wouldn't be recommended to run more than 2933Mhz? After almost a week since I upgraded the RAM I've finally reinstalled some of the games I used to play previously (because I also reinstalled the OS). So today I tried playing Overwatch for the first time with the new RAM on 3200Mhz with the XMP profile enabled. For some reason when the RAM is running at 3200Mhz Overwatch crashes with the error message the virtual memory error. Only the game crashes, not the system. Ever since I've been using this PC, for a year now, I've haven't encountered any hardware issues, so I immediately decided that I should tone down the speed of the RAM, because it's probably something with it, since none of the other components have had problems before. After toning down the speed to 2933Mhz this hasn't happened again today. So now I am here looking that the max speed 2nd gen Ryzen supports, and it's 2933Mhz. So that makes sense, why maybe the game crashed on 3200Mhz, because it probably made the system unstable.

I bought a 3200mhz kit because according to asrock the steel legend only supports up to 3466mhz or something. I hope its good enough

This makes me feel better about leaving the ram and IF at auto settings for the and PC's I built for friends and family. I don't usually oc for other people because of the increased chance of instability and seeing the performance gains being so small an average person wouldn't notice it makes me happy.

Sometimes even the automatic settings fail. When I want to fill all four slots on my board (B350, 2200G), I have to manually underclock the RAM while each of the pairs alone runs at 3200 without problem. This might be a problem of the CPU but is nevertheless annoying.

@@tz8785 you're using a very old board and a last gen cpu which wasn't supposed to run over 2933 at the very most. This video is about ryzen 3000 series.

Just before getting rid of my last system, I overclocked it. In benchmarks, I got over a 5% boost, but in real world tests, the difference wasn't noticeable. (Switching to an SSD had a much bigger impact.)

Thanks for the video. I am watching these to catch up as I need to build a PC after 10 years for my home office due to pandemic. To get the best value for money in the performance, what would be the best option from following RAM's? (all are 3200MHz and 2x16GB kits) Variation is in Latency but two selected are claimed CAS latency=16. Setup is mainly for image processing, one file is about 12 GB, and software recommends 4x of the file size for better performance (rendering, segmentation and registration). Planning to get a Ryzen 5900x processor.
