Something that makes the comparison between PC and console so difficult for me is the different sets of issues and advantages on PC depending on your build, with high-end, mid-range, and budget builds being completely different experiences. I grew up with a budget PC, I loved playing retro and indie games on it, but my PS3 ran laps around it. I had a mid-range build a couple years ago, sometimes better, sometimes worse performance than Xbox One X, but a much more complicated user experience. Now I own a high-end PC, that completely runs laps around PS5, but it cost me more maybe what the PS4 Pro, PS5 and PS6 would cost me combined, and the experience still isn't perfect, as DF mentioned in the video.

No such thing as a perfect experience.
That still doesn't change the fact that you get what you pay for:
      1. FREE online.
      2. Cheaper games.
      3. Mods (more mod freedom).
      4. More frequent game discounts.
      5. Deeper game discounts.
      6. Better graphics.
      7. Better frame rate.
      8. 21:9 and 32:9 aspect ratio support.

@@PSYCHOV3N0M See, you're inserting your use case into the assessment. But what if you want somewhere to play Fortnite with your friends? Fortnite has free online, it's free to play, it runs great on console. If you're not interested in mods, performance, your TV is 16:9 anyway, etc. You're buying hardware that's significantly more expensive (for your entire list to be true), it'll be harder to use, and you'll play the exact same game.
Btw the discounts thing is less true today than it was a decade ago. We just had some pretty steep discounts on console storefronts, and they're very common these days.

@@PSYCHOV3N0M thats why this topic is subjective because not everyone will have the same use the free online will matter only if you play everything with friends but if you are a single player gamer that only plays some free to play games then you dont need subscription, cheaper games only apply to old tittles in my experience with pc and ps5 newer tittles get faster discounts on ps5 on their store fronts and sales go up every time a sale ends so in terms of sales yoi get way more than pc, but new releases cost the same, mods only if you care about them for example only game i mod is skyrim but aside from that i never use them and a lot of people is like that, better graphics yeah and fps too but only if you really care for those you will be surprise how many dont care about one or the other because at the end of the day its the same game and the ultra wide gaming is niche if you want that you werent gonna had a console in mind anyway, those are same arguments as this "the pc can be use for more than gaming thats why the price is worth it" yeah if you wanted for something else but if you only want to game then its pointless if it can do pixar movies

      1. I dont care about online, used to like 15 years ago but im strictly single player only.
      2. Eh, unless we're talking about shady key sellers or those absolutely god awful "PC only" games (bloatware) that PC has then Steam prices to things like PS Store are almost 1:1 identical.
      3. The essential QoL fixes for games (especially the older ones) are very good but anything other than QoL is a waste of time in my opinion.
      4. That sounds like complete bullshit.
      5. Again, havent seen anything that ever blew my mind and made me like "wow this is significantly cheaper compared to its console counterpart", they are more or less the same.
      6. Naturally, granted you waste time tinkering with the settings both ingame and in things like NVIDIA CP etc.
      7. Very "stuttery" framerate compared to the console experience, the frame time graph is all over the place in PC games.
      8. There is not a single thing in this world that I care less about than 21:9 and 32:9 aspect ratio support.
And no most of these obviously dont apply to the SUPER high end 5k$ Intel Core i9-14900K, RTX 4090 and DDR5 6400MHz RAM for obvious reasons.

I think its a generational thing that's boosted the popularity of the PC. For me growing up, PC ownership felt isolating as most of the best gaming experiences were had inviting mates round to play on console, sitting on a couch or on the ground, eyes glued to the same tv. The experience was more than the game, it was the company you keep, the in person interactions. Stopping playing to go outside and do stupid shit.
With the shift to online that started in the late 2010s, we started to see a lot of young kids gaming with friends, but online with games like minecraft. This meant the younger gen was making those same experiences, but over voice chat and on PC, with less emphasis on playdates.
I think that's why so many people today prefer PC. They had more exposure to it growing up and therefore value the benefits it has over consoles. On a related note, I think this is why there is such a low interest in single player games by gen z and alpha...they had less exposure to them growing up and when they think of video games they naturally recall the ones where they played with mates online.
All of this is a generalisation, but does explain some of the reasoning behind current trends.

There's also less interest on single player games because they got worse vs the PS2 and XBOX 360 eras.
A trend that i absolutely hate about current games is fixed camera angles, i don't want to constantly use the 2nd control stick to adjust the camera, in the N64 years there was no 2nd stick and programmers had to do proper scripts.

I set it up exactly like a console and its freaking been amazing. No online payments, cheaper games, better graphics (as mentioned), and mod support. I hit the power button on my pc, pick up my xbox controller and press the main X button, i pick steam or Playnite, and pick my game. Once you set it up right you dont need a keyboard unless you want. This 100%. That's definitely one of the things that turned me off from the console market. By the end of the PS4 gen, I just started realizing how fragile my library of games was, because it was completely contingent on my old consoles still working (PS2, PS3 and PS4 all had to work for full BC)
On PC, you can just emulate the old stuff. And stuff that's not too old usually just works as it is even when you upgrade. Even stuff that's not natively backwards compatible, like a lot of Windows 95/98 games can either be bought in working form on GOG or probably play decently well on a Virtual Machine with some effort (I recently did this with all my old obscure disc-based PC games, and most of them ended up working, although it did take quite a lot of effort, tbf). On the other hand, good luck playing PS1 games on your PS5 if they haven't been rereleased o7
BC and emulation really just makes PC gaming's library absurdly good

If you can afford a high-end machine, PC is clearly the superior platform IMO. I switched back from console gaming to PC gaming almost 100%. Why? In my book, consoles have recently lost a lot of their appeal. It basically melts down to three things. 1) Console gaming used to be a synonym of ease of use and relaxed, simple couch gaming. Now, when I launch a game on a console, I often have to update the console itself, then the controller, then the (usually bugged) game, then I have to log in or create an account to get in-game rewards, etc. etc. It takes ages despite my decent connection speed. It simply doesn’t differ from PC… much. 2) Consoles used to have attractive exclusives. Now, everything I can play on my XSX I can also play on my PC, and my PS5 doesn’t really tempt me with exclusives either since all of them eventually come to PC anyway. 3) Both “top” consoles barely cut it anymore in terms of performance in most demanding games when compared to my PC. If the choice is e.g. 1440p, 60 fps, no RT vs. 4K, 70+ fps, full RT, it’s quite simple really. I can name tons of games that both look and run MUCH better on my PC than on my consoles. So, PC it is. Finally, a PC gamer that actually articulates the kind of downgrade that the big consoles are going for. Exactly why? Literally ever since the week came out I've been a Nintendo PC person. And especially this generation with all the Microsoft stuff going immediately to PC on day one and Sony stuff which I don't really like that many of getting ported 6 months to a year later is absolutely perfect. I can get the Nintendo thing one because of its uniqueness and two because they have actual platform exclusives plus to be honest it's just easier to do local multiplayer with Nintendo systems. Everything else if I want a high budget crazy game I'll do it on my mid-range laptop. I will counter argue that one benefit though that none of the consoles have is dealing with asinine Windows systems, the lockdown ecosystem of Mac and the wonderful confusing as fuck world of Linux, particularly having Linux argue with proton and wine in order to make anything viable.

Not everyone wants to drop thousands of dollars on overpriced components and then dive head-first into configuring and troubleshooting for all of their games. Some people just want to buy some hardware that’s relatively affordable, plug it in, and start playing games. I really do love PC gaming, and I don’t think I’ll ever go back to console, but I’m just sick of people acting like others are inherently wrong for wanting a console.
That being said, I’m sure that more and more people are switching to PC gaming since each of the current 3 giant console manufacturers have their own major problems. Sony is hell-bent on destroying their legacy and homogenizing all of their exclusive games (and punishing ones that don’t conform, I.e. LittleBigPlanet or Helldivers). Microsoft have great features (back-compat, dev mode, and Game Pass despite recent price hikes), but they have zero exclusive games worth buying and keep shuttering studios when it’s convenient. Nintendo have become totally complacent; full-price ports/remasters, forced scarcity (Mario 3D All-Stars, NES/SNES Classic), and a garbage subscription service that offers some of the worst emulation I’ve ever seen. In that regard, PC gaming does look like a safe haven compared to the current console market.

I agree with the overall sentiment; however, assuming you are referring to US dollars, "thousands of dollars" is exaggerating the cost of entry-unless you want the absolute best, which (if you want a PC that's console-level specifications-wise or around that) could probably be less than $1000. So while the entry of cost is undeniably higher, you can come out cheaper on the multiplayer (which is free), and probably cheaper games. The "configuring and troubleshooting for all of their games" is also an exaggeration.

Eh, not really, at least not really recent games, most $500 PCs are going to be using pretty low-end integrated APUs, which are fine for e-sports or older games, but are going to really struggle with more recent games, even at bare minimum settings. $850-$1200 is realistically what you'll need to spend on a build/pre-assembled PC to have a good experience with modern games. You can definitely run a lot of games on an older, lower power systems though - I was still gaming on my old i7 2600K w/1060 6GB system until a few months ago, and it handled everything but games from last few years quite well at 1080p. You definitely want a dedicated GPU though, as even my old 1060 is quite a bit faster than just about any APU on a modern processor, but then you're comparing a portion of a CPU die to an entire large PCB dedicated to graphics so of course APUs are going to struggle to compete. I'm old enough to remember when "low" settings meant the game was a pixellated mess of barely distinguishable textures though...times have changed. Most games still look decent at lower settings.

Usually the embedded chips are great value at the start of every generation but they're still only entry level stuff. The Pros always come out too late before getting kicked to the side since everyone has the original and by time they want to upgrade; they just get new ones. If I'm spending 400 personally; I would just spend extra for a 7900 GRE since they OC really well but there is set budget ranges for everything people buy. I would certainly pick a 7800 XT over a 4060 TI lol. Nvidia hasn't "abandoned" the entry level cards; people buy them all of the time unless Steam is just fabricating reports. They just neutered them and make a ton of money of them.

I grew up with the classic consoles since the 80's, always had a console around of every generation. I have been into building and gaming on PC since Pentium 3 and even worked at Intel for a big chunk of that time, so I had the funds and connections to get some good hardware. With that...I have always had both a PC and console around and shared time with both. Into my 40's though, it's been more time on the Switch, just because it's so simple and accessible. I will put up with the low res and frames on some games, yet the Switch will play some games completely fine...just to be able to put in the time to finish them. Traveling with the Switch is still the best, so small, great battery life and with a dongle dock, hotel TV playing is possibility. On my PC, I haven't upgraded my GTX1080, it plays a majority of what I have time to play. The problem with the PC, it's really as useful as it's user, some modern users don't have the attention spans or hard work to put into it.

I was born as a PC gamer but I immediately fell in love with consoles (with SNES and PS2) and played mainly there for most of the time.
Three years ago my old laptop broke and I was tired of playing games on PS4, so I decided to sell it and get a gaming laptop. Initially it was hard to go back to PC, no more plug 'n play, bugs, optimization problems, stutters, etc... But little by little I got used to it again and decided to buy a new laptop with an RTX 4050. Certainly, under certain wait, it's not as powerful as a PS5, but in general, as a PC, it offers me more freedom and customization of the experience, and this is perhaps the thing that keeps me on PC the most at the moment. For example, Dragon's Dogma 2 has a much better framerate than the PS5, even though it runs at a lower resolution.
Sony exclusives, on the other hand, have some optimization problems on PC compared to many multiplatform games, so much so that Forspoken and Forbidden West run much better on a PS5 than on my laptop. But overall, PC offers more customization and better performance than PS5 on all other games.
Last thing, the screen. For Ps5 I would have to buy a separate screen, while my laptop already has a 144hz full hd screen, good for technologies like Frame Generation. In short, for the moment I will continue to play on PC, but PS5 It's a good machine.

Cloud gaming will never win over people who care about performance, there is too much latency and performance cost when using it.

PC is objectively better. Consoles exist to this day because they are the dumbed down version for the masses. That's why consoles still exist. The masses is where the big money is at. Don't kid yourself, the bottom line is what drives the world. And it's no wonder why PCMR have for decades cursed consoles because they cap games! On PC we can do sooooo much more than on consoles. Take 4090, for instance. Not even the future PS7 will be able to do what a 4090 does.

That's not true. People don't always go for the best choice. They also get taught those bad habits as kids. If a parent puts a controller in the kids hands instead of a keyboard, they are burdening them for life. Even worse if they put a touchscreen instead of a controller. As with anything with humanity, it comes back to the way they're raised. Humans are blank slates when born.

I've been living-room PC gaming for years and it's simply excellent. I have a small keyboard/mouse lap-pad setup to handle the UI, but once I'm in a game it can be 100% controllers. Also, the "legwork" for tweaking games is entirely up to your own appetite. You can try to eek out the best quality/performance balance ... or just set to "medium" or "high" and leave it at that. There's a "it just works" reputation for consoles, but the PC experience really is acceptable and has been for years. For a serious gamer there are soooooo many pros vs. not many cons. The only deal-breaking con is the initial cost of entry (games are often much, much cheaper).

The answer isn’t as simple as a yes or no. For a PC, it depends on your hardware, and for a console, it depends if a specific user feels like they need or want one. For me, i play on both PS5 and PC, and if a game on either platform has issues(Think RE8 on PC when it had those huge lag spikes) that made me decide to buy the game on PS5. Cyberpunk on PS5 in backwards compatibility mode looked super blurry and crashed nonstop with countless bugs. So i refunded it and got it on PC, where i had no crashes and a very small amount of bugs.

To me using the steam deck which is basically a low end pc hardware wise proved that I would rather have a deck or lower end pc then a console. The much better and easier access of thousands of games from any generation just wins. Sure there is some new games that you might miss out but isn't enough to tip the scales.
Console is more about the user experience that the person wants. A hardcore person will always get more of the PC but a casual probably just wants to download a game or put a disc in and just play after a long day. I can completely empathise with that and if I didn't grow up being heavily interested in tech I could see myself being mainly a console player instead.

Puh, tough question. I'd say that it depends heavily on the consumer and on the consumer only.
I'd like to give another point to consider:
PC games often require anti-cheat software that needs access to your kernel, so they basically have access to everything on your Windows PC. I assume that in most cases Windows is not ONLY used for gaming but for office etc. and often has stored critical data.
Personally, for me, that is a red line.
Hence, I bought an M3 Max MacBook Pro for both work and gaming (whatever runs, eh? WoW and such things) and I am super happy with my decision. Alongside my Mac, I own a PS5, a Series X, a Switch and all those fancy iOS-devices. Gamewise, I am good, and thanks to crossplay, I only miss a few games that have no native Mac version or a console iteration.

PC is the best place to play because you get access to xbox and playsation games and its also cheaper because there are no hidden costs and you can upgrade your components while you have to buy a new console each generation.
You buy a PS5 for $500 and you pay $400 over 5 years to play online that is $900 plus the average cost of games are cheaper, you have tons of storefronts to choose from and when you compare their prices to PSN you save a lot. When people tell you that you save money by buying a console its a myth.

    • @hassosigbjoernson5738
      @hassosigbjoernson5738 4 місяці тому +2

Many gamers don't need that online capability, especially on Playstation with it's wonderful single player experiences. And for some of those games you do not even need that. Famous Fortnite run on XBox without Game Pass Core.
Like Alex and John said: it's the UI which is much better on this console for a TV experience. Although I am a PC gamer I use a Series X on a TV and since I have it I play even more on than ever. Cost me 350 € used with some games like RDR2 some 2 years ago. Bought some new titles on disk and sold them again when I was done. So especially considering costs I have no complains. A similar used PC with that 2080/ 3060 Ti some 2 years ago would have cost like double or triple of that Series X.
And it would not have that TV friendly UI, it would not be as sleek and small...
So for me the best platform is NOT the one with the most games ... it actually can only be the platform you play most.

I think for most people and even most ‘gamers’ console is the better option. Especially when you break it down to the core battleground areas. Budget. Accessibility. Games. Tech knowledge. Lifestyle.
PC is the place to play if you want incremental gains for exponential cost. The fact my ps5 costs half the price of my buddies graphics card and we essentially play all the same games with me having less problems is pretty condemning imo.
We’re getting to the point where we’re seeing games struggle to push the fidelity wow factor and hardcore gamers aka anyone reading this comment perpetually talking about gameplay > graphics. The most popular games in the world run on a PS4 hardware stack.
People always say “well I can play loads of older games on PC” okay…but can you? Can you do the easily without messing around with tutorials, third party products and a ton of hoops. Is it on Steam? Excellent but wait it barely works and gets no support.
I loved gaming on my PC for very specific experiences but we’ve gone full circle and it is very much master race meme territory. Ironically DF comes to mind. It’s a niche within a niche within a niche. I love the channel but how many players can notice let alone care about 90% of what you guys talk about? I watch to learn and like this stuff but it’s so inconsequential to a vast vast majority of gamers.
They want to buy a game, hit play and go. The fact I have to troubleshoot stuff on pc in 2024 is ridiculous

Console gaming is just so much more convenient. I just press the PS button on my controller and both my TV and console turn on, everything's already updated, and I can just jump into the game. Sure, the graphics aren't as good and neither is the performance, but I like not having to mess with driver updates, graphical settings, etc.

PCs don't have exclusives anymore really. Not since at least around 2009, when the switch to console as being lead platform was made and everything became largely parity locked between the two platforms. With one of those early examples being the first Wolfenstein reboot, back in 2013, with many other games to follow, such as Dragon Age Inquisition and Witcher 3, which is most famous for having had better visuals back in the E3 days which had to be dumbed down for console and PC by extension. They all started showing up parody locked not but 3 years after the decision was made to shift focus to consoles. Which makes sense, given that the average game takes about 3-4 years to develop.
Game developers, like Dice, were having a hard time porting much larger PC maps to smaller memory limited consoles. So, if the PC was pulling in 48 simultaneous players across larger maps? The console was only doing about 16-28 player map. Not only that, but devs also had to figure out how to shrink the maps and still retain the feel of the typical PC game. And this was largely the theme of things with other games as well, having larger maps with more in it than on console. So when came time to port these over to console, the console community was up in arms about "s***** console ports." You could almost never read an article where "s***** console port" wasn't a thing. This led to a switch, to where developers found it easier to just develop for the console and then tack on a little bit more polish for PC. Which obviously is not a great use for a platform that has 2-4 times the memory, CPU and GPU. And mind you, back then some of us may have opted to run rigs with up to 1500 w power supplies and three to four SLI'd GPUs. Everyone wonders what happened to SLI, it's because there's really no need for them anymore. Since console games are largely the lead platform and only developed to maximize on one smaller GPU.
So? No... PC represents diminishing gains. Sure you can spend two to four times the price for twice the frame rates and/ or resolution but that's about it. There's literally only one game right now pushing PC hardware and that is Star Citizen, which is not even released yet. In fact? If you play the average big name multi-platform game, such a Cyberpunk? You will find the same draw distance and pop-in distance on a high-end PC is as it would be on console. Like I can drive down Night City and just watch telephone poles in street lights pop into existence before my very eyes and that should never happen on an RTX 4080 PC. It's not just Cyberpunk but it's other games as well. They all have the same set draw distance pop-in, culling etc.

Console Gaming is just a different experience. Put the disc in, install (on PS5 you can start many games while you install it; on Switch directly). A smooth experience without optimizing many settings or searching for solutions if you have some issues. No different launchers and stuff like that. Just the clean OS, the Store build in and the advantage to trade or sell your games. Also playing on a big TV in HDR (especially with new TVs) is imo a bigger quality jump than better graphics or more fps.
IF i would play on PC, i would do it also on a TV. HDR is often broken on PC (messed up black level floor), while it is better on consoles in most cases. For me it is important with a D65 calibrated TV and accurate colors, to get also a good HDR experience.
But even if it would work well, like i said, the experience would be not the typical smooth and clean console experience. I start the PS5, chose my game (on a clean & simple UI) and can jump into my last savegame in some seconds skipping loading screens (without beeing in restmode and plugged in electricity). On Switch you have your game in general in standby without the need of power all the time. So i take it and play instantly, not matter if TV screen or handheld.
I´m also not interested in mods, i play the original games and go to the next. I understand the advantage of having your own system and beeing able to do it like you want. But thing is for Gaming i not need it anymore. The quality these days is good enough for me. For everything else i use a Notebook since many years.
