      @axebeard6085 Рік тому

      FIX POTUS:
      (1) Extend time as President-elect from ~2 months to 4 years.
      (2) Limit CONSECUTIVE terms as Acting President to 1.
      (3) Remove limit on non-consecutive terms.
      (4) Require 8 year waiting period before ex-President can become President-elect again.
      (5) Require a 4 year waiting period before ex-Vice President can become President-elect.
      Result:
      - 4 years to investigate elections.
      - Presidents can't influence a re-election when there's no re-election to influence.
      - Transfer of power from President to President-elect is automatic.
      - Acting Presidents can stop worrying about poll numbers when making decisions.
      FIX SCOTUS:
      (1) Extend the seats to 18.
      (2) Limit term to 36 years.
      (3) Nominate judges same way we select juries. President chooses 5 nominees. The senate has 1 peremtory challenge. The House has 1 peremtory challenge. SCOTUS has 1 peremptory challenge. President chooses 2 of the remaining nominees to SCOTUS.
      (4) When a case is brought to SCOTUS, 9 justices are chosen RANDOMLY from the 18 to hear the case.
      (5) The remaining 9 justices spend that time advising Congress on proposed legislation, helping them to write laws that will pass constitutional muster.
      (6) On the next case brought to SCOTUS, the random selection is done again. (Every case gets a random selection from the 18).
      (7) If one of the justices dies or retires early, there is a pool of 9 justices that can be instantly chosen from to fill the gap. To fill the vacancy, the Acting President chooses an 4 justices. SCOTUS, the Senate, and the House each get 1 peremptory challenge. Whoever is left, the President picks one, and they become the new Supreme Court justice.
      RESULT:
      - With POTUS fix in place, every president (regardless of party affiliation) adds 2 justices to SCOTUS.
      - All branches have a say in who is chosen, BUT NO ONE CAN DERAIL THE PROCESS.
      - Since the makeup of the presiding justices (9) would be random, the political parties in Congress would have more incentive to write sensible/functional laws that DON'T reach SCOTUS. Right now, they don't have to. They rely on gaming the system so that SCOTUS is packed in their favor.
      - Congress would be getting advice from people who actually understand the law.
      - Unfortunately, I don't see any way to prevent justices from ignoring the constitution and cherry picking precedents to fit a politically-motivated ruling. Maybe this fix will help in some small way to minimize that nonsense.
      FIX ELECTION SYSTEM
      - Presidential elections ignore political districts. President is chosen by majority vote of all Americans combined. This gives the majority of Americans representation.
      - Senate election ignores political districts. Senators are chosen by majority vote of residents in each state. This gives the states (and their residents) representation.
      - House elections obey political districts. This gives each district (and their residents) representation.
      - Keep the electoral college. (You may not like it, but what happens if there's a zombie apocalypse, and all lines of communication are cut? You would want a small group of people traveling to the capitol. A group of people who could change their votes if the voter's chosen representative gets eaten by zombies.)
      RESULT:
      - Gerrymandering only works for House elections

Yep. The local and state levels affect our lives more directly than Federal. The corruption literally appearing near your front yard. Off-topic, I long considered moving to Vancouver, but I am as close to living in a country separate from most these dis-United States; things are better where I live than anyplace in the southern and midwestern states, and I want nothing to do with them. I'm only glad I'm not a parent, and that I don't have to worry about a silly assault on access to contraceptives (including the choice of abortion if it's critical), and that my voting rights are better protected than in those red states.

      @Ray Redmond • I don't agree with you for 2 reasons.
First, the functioning of the legal apparatus from law enforcement to judiciary at the local and state level is the responsibility of voters within those jurisdictions. Voters are responsible for providing oversight and preventing disarray. The DOJ budget is already in the billions of dollars. I can't even imagine how much we would need to spend to oversee every local and state entity responsible for enforcing the Rule of Law.
Second, unless you are a member of the senior staff at the Department of Justice (DOJ) or a fly on the wall, you don't know what the DOJ is or is not doing because DOJ does not discuss on-going investigations. All you have access to is information publicly released by DOJ and speculation by "subject matter experts."
You could show patience and await the DOJ results, recognizing past cases have taken years to complete, or you could ignore the practical realities of investigations and criticize DOJ for not living up to your ideological expectations.

I have to slightly disagree with Rep. Kinzinger on 1 point, that prosecuting former governments is something, that happens in failing democracies. It can be, yes, if it is done rutinely and on purely political grounds, ie. Brazil. But NOT prosecuting criminal acts by a former government, coz u dont want to set "a dangerous precedent" or "it would a political prosecution" and other such ludicrous arguments, Ive heard for not doing so in the US (not from Rep. Kinzinger) is imo a sign of a failing democracy. Look at France. France doesnt have a perfect democratic system, but they do not tolerate law breaking from their politicians, in fact they have resently prosecuting and convicted former president Sarkozy for among other things corruption.
And that is absolutely necessary to do, when there is criminality, or u set the very dangerous precedent, that u have had in the US for decades, if not forever, that there is no accountability, no punishment for a politicians, that the laws do not apply, that as long as its a politician doing the criminal acts, there is very rarely any prosecution, and if a president, no prosecution.
And that, imo, is why u are, where u are today. Coz u have repeatedly declined to prosecute criminal politicians, which signals to the next 1, that they can do it to and then push the line further, coz apparently there is no limit to what a politician can do in the US and still never have to answer to ur so-called justice system.
The bad precedent isnt prosecuting former governments, it is NOT prosecuting former governments/politician, who break the law. It is a sign of a HEALTHY democray, not a failing 1, to prosecute its elected representatives, when they break the law, and to hold them fully accountable, just like every1 else.
