In a storied amateur career, Camacho won three New York Golden Gloves tournaments, beginning with the Sub-Novice 112 lbs championship in 1978.During his professional career, Camacho had many notable fights against some of the biggest names in boxing, defeating Roberto Durán twice late in Duran's career, and knocking out Sugar Ray Leonard to send him into permanent retirement. He also fought Julio César Chávez, Félix Trinidad, and Oscar De La Hoya, among others. As an amateur, Camacho won three New York Golden Gloves Championships. Camacho won the 1978 112 lb Sub-Novice Championship, 1979 118 lb Open Championship, and 1980 119 lb Open Championship. In 1979 Camacho defeated Paul DeVorce of the Yonkers Police Athletic League in the finals to win the title, and, in 1980, Camacho defeated Tyrone Jackson in the finals to win the Championship. In 1980 Camacho won Intercity Golden Gloves, defeating Orlando Johnson of Chicago. Camacho completed his amateur career, having a hundred fights under his belt, with 96 wins, and 4 losses. Camacho's major achievements in the amateur boxing: 1978 New York Golden Gloves Flyweight Sub-Novice Champion 1979 New York Golden Gloves Bantamweight Open Champion 1979 Intercity Golden Gloves 119-Pound Champion 1980 New York Golden Gloves Bantamweight Open Champion 1980 Intercity Golden Gloves 125-Pound Champion After a stellar amateur career, Camacho began a quick rise through the professional rankings, first in the featherweight and then in the junior-lightweight division. He was so confident that he claimed he could beat world featherweight champions Salvador Sánchezand Eusebio Pedroza. However, Sánchez died while Camacho was still coming up in the ranks. In the junior-lightweight division, he defeated the top contenders Irleis CubanitoPerez, Melvin Paul, John Montes, and Refugio Rojas. LightweightEdit Moving up to lightweight, Camacho won the United States Boxing Association title against Roque Montoya with a twelve-round decision. His victory in the next fight, broadcast on Home Box Office (HBO), made him a two-time world champion. Camacho beat the Mexicandefending world champion, José Luis Ramírezin Las Vegas to win the WBC world Lightweight championship. Camacho dropped Ramirez in round three and won the fight by a unanimous twelve-round decision. The two other reigning world champions in his division at that time, Livingstone Bramble and Jimmy Paul, were reluctant to unify the crown with Camacho. Instead, he beat Freddie Roach before his next fight of importance came along, ten months after beating Ramírez. He met Edwin Rosario on June 13, 1986, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, a bout also broadcast on HBO. The fight was notable for the shifts of dominance between the men. Camacho dominated rounds one to four, but had to hang on in rounds five, six and seven, when he felt Rosario's power. He came back to take rounds eight and nine, but Rosario came back to take the last three rounds. It was a close fight, but Camacho retained the title by a split decision of the judges. Camacho retained his title against Cornelius Boza Edwards, a former world junior lightweight champion, in Miami in a unanimous decision, after dropping Edwards in the first round. Light welterweight He went up in weight and competed at the next level. After a few fights there, he met Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, the former world lightweight champion who had a record of 29-3 with 23 knockouts, for the vacant WBOLight Welterweight title. Camacho was the fresher of the two and won a split twelve-round decision. He joined that exclusive group of world champion boxers who have become world champions in three weight divisions. Legacy and honor Several sports journalists, analysts, and experts from Puerto Rico and United States have praised Camacho's skills and influence in the boxing world. The journalist Rafael Bracero and Francisco Valcárcel, president of the World Boxing Organization, agreed that Camacho was among the "Top 5 Puerto Rican boxers" of all time, along with Félix "Tito" Trinidad, Wilfredo Gómez, and Wilfredo Benitez. The boxing historian, Mario Rivera Martinó, praised Camacho, calling him a "complete fighter" in the Lightweight division. José Sulaimán stated that he "revolutionized boxing during his time". Ed Brophy, director of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, noted Camacho's talents in attracting an audience. He said, "Camacho brought a lot of excitement to boxing. He was bright, colorful, and always gave something to talk about with his walks to the ring, with his unique style of entering, and the costumes he wore." Brophy also praised Camacho's boxing skills, describing him as "an exciting fighter, and one of the greats. He faced the best, going up and down several divisions.Alfredo R. Martínez, senior editor of ESPN Deportes, also noted Camacho's flamboyant approach, saying that "if he wasn't the first, he was one of the firsts that entered the ring with extravagant costumes, feather crests, bright clothes, everything to the rhythm of some pop song" Hiram Martínez, senior editor of ESPN Deportes, said about Camacho's training: he transforms into a hungry, focused, and dedicated boxer, that works hours and hours polishing his speed, his wit, and the style that turned him into one of the greats of all time. That's the only way you can explain why all those great hitters he faced during the best moments of his career never knocked him down Jaime Vega-Curry (deputy editor of ESPN Deportes), said Camacho was "a character that combined a contagious charisma, impressive boxing quality, a child's soul, a salesman's shrewdness, and a superlative confidence on himself and in the force of his 'Macho Time Brophy noted Camacho would be eligible for the International Boxing Hall of Fame in December 2015. He added that "Camacho is part of boxing history, and that's what the International Boxing Hall of Fame is about. Camacho, along with Lupe Pintor and Hilario Zapata, among others, was voted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame on December 2015 and was inducted on June 2016 Etc,etc.... I think he earned his respect.
@@dalebecause2467 November 05 George Foreman becomes oldest heavyweight champ Duran didn't have to take the fight or any boxer for that matter. What I posted was a clip and paste from a Boxing Forum. Now if I had posted that a veteran fought a new comer and won, you'd say he's green, with not enough experience. That's boxing, you take the fight, or you don't. I'm sure,.....Floyd couldn't beat McGregor in the octagon. But those are the marbles they played with. "Fifteen years later, Camacho, who was six years younger than Leonard, ended Leonard’s comeback attempt at 40, knocking him out in the fifth round". They chose to fight, just like Duran. Why, because fighters go through the roster and sometimes, they have bill's to pay. Something prove, especially for themselves. Or plain ole, I want to fight.
@@RUESPEED1 Beating Duran when hes 44 and 50 years old means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING...SMH...You talk about it like he beat the real Duran.....SMH...Had they fought in the primes Camacho would have been counting sheep.....
@@dalebecause2467 if you read my last post, I did say I copied from a forum and pasted. Your making it sound like your thinking it in your head. Camacho to me was a clown, and I'm Puerto Rican. But he did have his due. May not mean much to you, or anyone. But it's on record, so it counts. Not impossible, but unlikely, but "In their prime", circa 1978, Duran was in his prime. Camacho was then, 16 years old. And I'm a Duran fan, for clarity. But he did say, allegedly, "No Mas"...... 🤷♂️
Thank you guys for saying this about my ancestor. You are all very great people. I'm going to be like my ancestor before me. I don't dream I know what the truth is. I'm a future boxer with my own businesses.
Camacho was a damn good lightweight fighter but to say he would have beat Tito easily if he was in his prime, Tito is a welterweight and didn't lose a fight till he climbed up to Middleweight. Camacho never did much as a welter period, Fought some over the hill name fighters like Sugar Ray and Duran but geez Duran was like what, 40 years old? Sugar Ray late 30's?
idk if it was in its "prime". It was definitely greater here than in the 2000s and 2010s but I'm sure there were already some old heads talking about the 4 sanctioning bodies, (although the WBO wasn't recognized until late and was mostly held in higher regard from Latin American, Asian, and European countries). Most big fights were happening in Vegas by this point which is different from the 70s and 80s which were held all over the country and the world, and the big fights were either on pay television like HBO or Showtime as opposed to free cable like CBS and ABC in the 70s and 80s.
Camacho fights like a wimp. Let's just be honest. Lateral movement is fine and dandy but you have to make a stand and fight at some point to win a fight. Leonard was a mover. So was Ali but they were also busy fighters who threw a lot of effective punches. Camacho runs when he gets hit.
That's because he felt his ko power, pound for pound Trinidad is one of the hardest punchers of all time. Oscar put a master performance but could only put out that pace for so long because Trinidad never gasses out either.
tlig What fight were YOU watching anyway?? Listen, homey-we all acknowledge Camacho's defensive skills. But those "southpaw jabs" are not enough to win a fight against a class boxer/puncher like Trinidad. The sad tale of Camacho is that he somehow began to believe he was a tough, macho guy-when in fact he's not!
Leonard and Ali we're the reason boxing became a whole bunch of s*** running and running everybody complains about Floyd Mayweather was he ain't worth nothing either but he learned off of those guys
Robert Salley Golovkin is 35 what you talking about. Depends on how well you take care of ur body. Look at Bernard Hopkins. Smh Trinidad was just a beast.
my friend you are an idiot the career of a boxer is from 18 to 30 depends of how well the boxer take care of himself, everybody knows that camacho was living a fast life so he was practically done by this time beside he started boxing at 17 getting his first world title at 17 so imagine how many times he fought his body was done.
spanish rampage ,, Yes,, Your actually on target friend! Macho' s age wasn't what took him out of this fight,, He was like Roy Jones after his KO loss,,, NEVER THE SAME!! lots of fighters in history went the same way. Even PAC MAN isn't the same guy after that terrible totally KO'd loss. It changes the way you look at getting hit,, Some overcome, some shrink from it. Your assessment of. Macho is right on bro!
god bless the internet. Now I can watch ALL of titos fights on the net (yutube) while working out. Gotta say that so far watching tito in his youth he was a very TALL welterweight fighter with pure punching power. He should have stayed at welterweight. Mayweather was right behind these guys coming up from lightweight....would have loved to see Trinidad vs young mayweather back then...
Not only Manny Pacquiao he held the s*** out of camello with kind of suffocating and then everybody got upset when Canelo try to bite his hand then he hit that kid when the kid wasn't looking when the referee distracted the kid for him and he just stole that kid forgot his name but yeah it was nice when he could yell at the referee when somebody's whooping his ass and the referee would break them up don't believe me just look at his fights
if floyd mayweather boxed every 6 months he would never be undefeated.he fights every 2-3 years and the opponets are always hand picked. just a paper champion.
r.i.p to my Nana and Camacho... Way back in the day, Nana was a Bally's maid. Had no idea that the suite she was cleaning belonged to Camacho and his mother. His mom actually ended up cooking a big meal fory Nana on top of a decent tip.
Bobby the great excuser, starting round one when tried to tell us how great Camacho was. After round three he told us that Camacho had something wrong with him. He told us that throughout the rest of the fight. What was wrong was he got an ass whipping. Tito was all over him from the 3rd round on. Bobby can go to the rear of the class and stand in the corner.
This wasn’t Macho prime but n older, like the greats that get older and fights an up coming star like Trinidad....RIP Hector Camacho...Felix Trinidad enjoy your retirement 👍 I’ve payed to watch both fighters time n time again. I’m now retired from watching new fighters so yeah,i won’t pay to watch anymore
Stewie!!!! I keep saying it, watch the fights on mute. But I’m thinking you don’t like boxing but like commentating. Here’s a something to remember about boxing. There is always a preferred outcome. It’s why the sport took a nosedive and also why the fighters are so rich by he networks are the biggest part of the problem, especially back then with Don King. Showtime has money invested in Trinidad just like HBO had $ in De La Hoya. It’s how it works. The networks aren’t going to hype their guy with neutral commentary and they really don’t want the guy they’re paying to lose.
Over 70 World Champions Puerto Rican & Wilfred Benitez holds the World record for the youngest champion of any division at the age of 17 when he beat Carlos Palomino for the Welterweight Champion of the World.🗣AWESOME👊🏼🇵🇷👏🏼🇺🇸
When Tito jumped all over Hector in the 3rd, at the end of the round Ferdinand said Cortes had to pry him off of Hector. It was Hector holding onto Tito. Tito's hands were up in the air and not holding. Let's see if the commentators begin to call it correctly or fall into the common practice of trying to influence the fight.
+Snoopy Williams history is biased and the people who rank boxers are old white guys that favor Americans. A whole bunch of fighters rated high are no better than some foreign fighters but they happen to be American. Nat fleischer, Bert sugar, and others were completely biased and favored their own even if the other guy was better. Good thing that no one can use that bullshit ratings again.
This was a macho who was into partying and the yayo trinidad was a pretty damn good fighter and on his a game during this fight. A young fresh into the sport camach wouldve made this fight historic.
Camacho, for all his negatives was a TOUGH S. O. B. man!! Knew how to survive against some of the BEST, hurtful and correct punchers in his divisions. RiP..
both are great fighters and had there due. hector was a showboat but he took on whoever they put in front of him,and felix was just a classic to watch.i dont think i would have wanted to score this fight, thats how close it was.
I remember the night of this fight. And just like that the world began to know that the lengthier the fights the stronger Trinidad would get. He had always began slow and even thrown to the mat but after round 7 he's "as dangerous at they come". Camacho was good but his fights didn't went all the way to the 12th round often, Camacho had my respect,(RIP).
+walshj Watch Hector's early fights: the epitome of exciting boxing, fast hands moving like a ballet dancer being dirty most fights and with early KOs... and he had the personality which sold seats same thing with Floyd, his early fights he looked like a fist hurricane in all walks of life, as you get older, you get more tentative and cautious, and ..boring.

Camacho's major achievements in the amateur boxing:
1978 New York Golden Gloves Flyweight Sub-Novice Champion
1979 New York Golden Gloves Bantamweight Open Champion
1979 Intercity Golden Gloves 119-Pound Champion
1980 New York Golden Gloves Bantamweight Open Champion
1980 Intercity Golden Gloves 125-Pound Champion
After a stellar amateur career, Camacho began a quick rise through the professional rankings, first in the featherweight and then in the junior-lightweight division.
LightweightEdit
Moving up to lightweight, Camacho won the United States Boxing Association title against Roque Montoya with a twelve-round decision.
Light welterweight
He went up in weight and competed at the next level.
Legacy and honor
Several sports journalists, analysts, and experts from Puerto Rico and United States have praised Camacho's skills and influence in the boxing world.
Martínez, senior editor of ESPN Deportes, also noted Camacho's flamboyant approach, saying that "if he wasn't the first, he was one of the firsts that entered the ring with extravagant costumes, feather crests, bright clothes, everything to the rhythm of some pop song"
Hiram Martínez, senior editor of ESPN Deportes, said about Camacho's training:
he transforms into a hungry, focused, and dedicated boxer, that works hours and hours polishing his speed, his wit, and the style that turned him into one of the greats of all time. That's the only way you can explain why all those great hitters he faced during the best moments of his career never knocked him down
Jaime Vega-Curry (deputy editor of ESPN Deportes), said Camacho was "a character that combined a contagious charisma, impressive boxing quality, a child's soul, a salesman's shrewdness, and a superlative confidence on himself and in the force of his 'Macho Time
Brophy noted Camacho would be eligible for the International Boxing Hall of Fame in December 2015. He added that "Camacho is part of boxing history, and that's what the International Boxing Hall of Fame is about.
Camacho, along with Lupe Pintor and Hilario Zapata, among others, was voted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame on December 2015 and was inducted on June 2016
Etc,etc.... I think he earned his respect.
"Duran late in his career"....LOL......Duran was a grandpa when he fought Camacho. Please....

Duran didn't have to take the fight or any boxer for that matter.

Sugar Ray late 30's?
nose porque le decian el macho, si era bien correlon y miedoso, imaginate sino fuera macho??
I miss these days so much not only was boxing great but life itself was great.
I loved both ... Great fighters...
If Mayweather and Camacho ever "fought", they would conceive a child in the ring😉
You don't know shit about boxing
+Jim Hart HA! That was funny!
I don't get it
For the clinch the hugging gay type thing
Watching a bout by either (notice the word 'fight' wasn't used) was like gay porn.
Back when boxing was in it's prime
idk if it was in its "prime".
You don't know what the hell you're talking about!! You're really dumb!!
I love to watch Trinidad even though he's a dirty fighter. Maybe that's why I like him.
They are both Puertorinan. for me I say may the best man win.
Felix with the Boosie fade 🥶
Y medio mundo a reír. Era un personaje.
Rip macho , segudo!!!!🙋🙋🙋
Recuerdo cuando le preguntaron a macho camacho a quien le apostaba de tito vs de la hoya, y respondio ,,A ninguno porque los dos me dieron( que gracioso le quedo) RIP macho
Cortez stuck his thumb in Camacho's eye, not Trinidad.
Macho was the man! We miss him in and out of boxing..
Amen
Camacho fights like a wimp. Let's just be honest. Lateral movement is fine and dandy but you have to make a stand and fight at some point to win a fight. Leonard was a mover. So was Ali but they were also busy fighters who threw a lot of effective punches. Camacho runs when he gets hit.
What- you don't appreciate his southpaw jab to his opponent's gloves?
That's because he felt his ko power, pound for pound Trinidad is one of the hardest punchers of all time. Oscar put a master performance but could only put out that pace for so long because Trinidad never gasses out either.
tlig What fight were YOU watching anyway?? Listen, homey-we all acknowledge Camacho's defensive skills. But those "southpaw jabs" are not enough to win a fight against a class boxer/puncher like Trinidad. The sad tale of Camacho is that he somehow began to believe he was a tough, macho guy-when in fact he's not!
+TheAssasin2525 Lighten up, Francis... I think +tlig was trying to be funny. Look up the word 'sarcasm' when you get a chance...
Leonard and Ali we're the reason boxing became a whole bunch of s*** running and running everybody complains about Floyd Mayweather was he ain't worth nothing either but he learned off of those guys
Macho man had the life. Money, women and good coke. All three feel really good.
Todo 10 les felicito
By the time the 90s rolled around the drugs had destroyed Camacho. The fastest fighter ever had slowed.
Camacho was only 31 years old here. He definitely wasn't pass his prime. Trinidad just whipped his ass. Point blank
***** Look up the word "irony," then take a second look at your comment. Try not to pop a blood vessel in your little brain.
31 is the peak of any athletes prime lol
Two Puerto Ricans and believe me it was about more than that.
never was a fan of camacho the holding and running around the ring drove me nuts.
He was like that after his prime , google him at Jr lightweight and lightweight he was a beast .
camacho always ran....held...and complained.
god bless the internet. Now I can watch ALL of titos fights on the net (yutube) while working out. Gotta say that so far watching tito in his youth he was a very TALL welterweight fighter with pure punching power. He should have stayed at welterweight. Mayweather was right behind these guys coming up from lightweight....would have loved to see Trinidad vs young mayweather back then...
pure punching power with loaded gloves.
Agree! but they Push Tito too much , to challenge Bernard Hopkins, tito was no match for Bernard.
Mayweather would never have stepped in the ring with a prime Trinidad.

all of those guys were world champs or undefeated when tito fought them
He fought the best Trinidad Julio Caesar and other great ones rip wherever you are!!!
Hector macho Camacho didn't get rewarded for holding . Floyd Mayweather Jr got extra points for holding Manny Pacquiao

Bobby the great excuser, starting round one when tried to tell us how great Camacho was. After round three he told us that Camacho had something wrong with him. He told us that throughout the rest of the fight. What was wrong was he got an ass whipping. Tito was all over him from the 3rd round on. Bobby can go to the rear of the class and stand in the corner.
he say macho time,he would have say chicken time 🤣

This wasn’t Macho prime but n older, like the greats that get older and fights an up coming star like Trinidad....RIP Hector Camacho...Felix Trinidad enjoy your retirement 👍 I’ve payed to watch both fighters time n time again. I’m now retired from watching new fighters so yeah,i won’t pay to watch anymore
Just watched the first round of this fight and already wondering what fight the commentators are watching. I hate biased play by play.
Trinidad got credit for over a hundred punches that didn't come close to landing. Dr. Freddie is a certified hack.
Felix a better fighter and boxer.
J- ROD salute PR Mexico and Latino boxers. they are the real reason why boxing is very famous. from Philippines boxing fan.
Quit hugging and fight... Weakling
Camacho was past prime anyway
Ricans and mexicans are the best boxers in boxing.
to bad history dosent say so
You should watch more boxing.
Nothing really tops the black American fighter
Snoopy Williams ok
This was a macho who was into partying and the yayo trinidad was a pretty damn good fighter and on his a game during this fight. A young fresh into the sport camach wouldve made this fight historic.
I think holding after punching your opponent several times is okay, but holding your opponent without punching is a no no.

Camacho, for all his negatives was a TOUGH S. O. B. man!!

And just like that the world began to know that the lengthier the fights the stronger Trinidad would get. He had always began slow and even thrown to the mat but after round 7 he's "as dangerous at they come". Camacho was good but his fights didn't went all the way to the 12th round often, Camacho had my respect,(RIP).
camacho is a boring fightere same as mayweather, he is over rated
+walshj Watch Hector's early fights: the epitome of exciting boxing, fast hands moving like a ballet dancer being dirty most fights and with early KOs... and he had the personality which sold seats
