  • Rod Deon has been wood carving for 85 years. He was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in 1921. Rod specializes in wildlife wood carvings and Bull Moose in particular. In 1947, he carved a large bull Moose, that was chosen and featured on a Canadian postage stamp in 2003.
The carving featured in this movie is called 'Bull Moose in the Snow'. Rod uses DuraGrit carbide rotary tools along with other traditional gouges, to create finely detailed and naturally proportioned sculptures. This carving took 40 hours to complete and uses Basswood, Walnut and Cherry wood. Rod doesn't use paint, but instead prefers the natural colour of the wood to carry the colours of the animal.
DuraGrit Carbide Rotary tools, cut and shape a myriad of hard and soft woods cleanly and easily. They are designed for rapid material removal, sculpting, fine detailing and last a very, very long time.

What a Delightful and Talented Gentlemen! I could sit with him for days and soak up all his knowledge and have enough to last a lifetime, but know near nothing to the level he does!!

Yeah old people are very undervalued in society unfortunately, but it's nice too see Rod showing us how it's done 👍👍

    Dear viewer,,
In the summer of 2013, DuraGRIT Carbide Tools, sponsored Rod Deon to carve a Bull Moose using DuraGRIT carbide rotary tools. It was a wonderful experience working with Rod on this project. At 92yrs of age and 85 years of carving experience, Rod brings much to the world of wood carving, as can be seen by the magnificent creation in this video - "Bull Moose in The Snow".
A full length 'How To' version of this project is in the editing stage and will be posted here and on the duragit.com website when it is ready.
Thank you Rod for sharing your remarkable talent and experience. It was an experience I'll never forget.
    Enjoy...
