Masonry is a dying trade due to the labor intensity and precision of work ..... PEOPLE ARE LAZY! Love seeing craftsmen's work! Good looking work my friend !
I used the same type (dry stacked) of cultured stone on a fireplace wall in my living room. About 10' wide, 2' deep. I'd never done this before and it was a trip. 54 hours very well spent. I used 13 real stones from the property and sprinkled them around. Most guests find 2 or 3, that's how real they look.
In 7 days I start my project after watching videos 1&2 I feel confident I can do it and do it well. My only concern is 2 inside and two outside curve corners my plan to cut 45 degree angles. Thanks for this great DIY videos You rock .
Very sharp, and it came out really nice Dirt Boss. The stone I worked with was "field stone" made by Environmental Stone. That shape was much less finicky by far. It still had it's challenges but nothing like this. And, as usual, you made it look easy. I'm also glad you showed those "pop-off's" and how to correct them.
I just got an estimate if $24,000 and so glad I saw this (and subscribed) bc I’ve been doing cracked tile artwork for years. I can totally do this on my house myself. Ty for explaining all this in your videos!!!
James I hope so it's a lot of work obviously I enjoy it!! My main intention is so my great great great grandkids will have a documentary of my life. Thanks for the comment! Mike
This is a great video and very easy to follow. I’m a licensed contractor and I sub out my stone work now. But trying to learn a new skill and man you guys do excellent work and make it look easy! Keep the great vids coming!
Don’t think I have the patience for this type of masonry to much puzzle work after laying traditional brick and block since 77 still looks good great patience on your part all the new technology in the industry is hard for a old dog to see the good in it keep up the good work!!!!

We're in a time of limited work force, fewer people coming in to continue the trades and the budgets aren't getting larger and schedules aren't getting any longer, but you guys do work that's worth the wait
Does the flashing you use under the cedar siding come pre sloped? I know its suppose to lay flat on sill stone after install. Just wondering if you have to bend it down to meet stone. Seems like the only flashing I can find is 90degree with no slope. Thank you
Fine looking job ! Question ... I am installing an indoor fire place. The stone I am using is the same. Can I install this stone on a cement Product called " WonderBoard " ? It would be over 3/4 " plywood.
I have this crap up around my garage just lien this project. 2 year old home and water is getting in where the stack stone meets the vertical hardi-board trim. Mine has 3/4” mortar joint up the sides separating the stone from the trim. I am thinking about grinding out that mortar and using a colored flexible sealer instead. What do you think?
Brandon it all depends on style and design the GC and architect designed that way. I've done them both ways.. but usually around here there flush Thanks
Do you put caulk over the grout on the top capstone? I was curious if water would eventually start wearing the grout out running over it and if a clear caulk would help that?
Hey, great videos; loved them both. One question. Do you have a video on the initial prep work? I see you have some type of "brushed-on" masonry cement for adhering the stone. Is that all it is, a standard masonry cement, or something else? And what is used for a backer; CDX? Thanks again for the videos....ty
Hey Dirt Boss, great video. Question, did you have to put up the wall and prep it before putting stone on? Or was that part of the construction phase of the garage?
Dirt Boss that looks really good and I appreciate your instructional points for the DIY’r, like me.... I am planning on doing exactly what you have shown and your video is the best one teaching non-professions... I have a question for you which I’m hoping you can advise and that is my home is about 12 years and has a stucco exterior; can I apply the stone like you shown or do I need to do something else? Also, what type of drip edging would I use to prevent water from getting behind the stone. Any advise would be really appreciated. Thank you..
Sean Thanks for the compliment! Yes first you will have to install wire lath.. but you have to make sure you have nails long enough or screws to reach the studs or something secure. Not sure about the drip edge without seeing your house. Thanks for watching!
@@DIRT-BOSS would that be the same with faux stone panels? What I've seen is using adhesive. Will regular stucco and efis be able to hold the weight of the panels? What is the best waterproofing to use at the base it will be resting on concrete.

thanks for the video, but your not doing the mason's out there any justice in showing them the half ass job of mortaring the stone especially the sill stone. We install our sill stone first so they are level and we don't have to use a screw to help hold them in place. And your stone won't come loose off the wall if you wet down the wall first and seal the stone with mortar after you lay them, this also helps in not having any bee holes between the wall and the stone where water can get in between and help pop them off. You do know that you need 2 layers of 30 lbs felt paper even if there is tyvek, masonry eats the tyvek paper! Do you guarantee your work and for how long? Good luck to you!
I apologize for being a putz, but I’m a Grandma, and I don’t have anyone else to ask. ( (except Menards employees). Do I put a scratch coat over the bonding agent when I’m applying stone veneer on a poured concrete wall?
You can stick the stone right to the concrete wall in most circumstances.. as long as it's prepped well.. if not scratch coat is necessary with wire lath.
