I’ve said it once & I’ll continually say it - homeschooling my kids has been one of THE BEST parenting decisions I’ve ever made! Not just as a defense against the crooked ways of the world, but because it’s so deeply fulfilling and rewarding. There are so many beneficial fruits to doing life the homeschooling way! Hearing this discussion just reinforces my choice to homeschool my kids. Thanks for all the insight & perspectives you both shared!

The problem is that in home school the kids often are not challenged enough. It’s too easy. Many homeschoolers can’t read well. My kids have many homeschool friends in our stake, and they say that they always see their friends online playing video games most of the day, while they are in school. My kids did a homeschool hybrid type model for two years during Covid, and it’s just very difficult to motivate them. They are back in public school now, and it took me a year of sitting with them to catch them up on math and English. Now they are back at the top of their classes where they were, before we withdrew them from public school initially. We have very open and honest conversations at the dinner table about our values, and we read the scriptures, etc. So far they seem to still understand our values, and even sometimes go extreme in where they don’t want to associate with some of the other kids. I tell them to be friendly to everyone and get to know other people, and be an example. They definitely know the difference between our values and the world. They are good kids, but it’s true that it’s difficult, because they are constantly bombarded with junk. The environment is an issue.

@@christophertolman7023 I completely disagree with the blanket statement that "most homeschool kids can't read well." The national average shows that most high school seniors are graduating with a third grade reading level. They are not proficient in reading, or math.
Charter Schools still fall under the umbrella of "public school," so even on a hybrid system, the kids are still using the public school curriculum, just at home part of the time. It's not actually homeschooling.
Most homeschool curriculum is Christian based, which charter schools don't allow families to use unless they are full-time homeschoolers and purchase the materials themselves. This is why most homeschool families don't homeschool through charter schools. They file to become their own private school- so they can have freedom to choose their own curriculum
Most homeschool curriculum are also literature based, and require massive amounts of reading.
The majority of success in a homeschool depends on the parent & what they require. Parents who require online learning/games get the fruit of it. Parents who require classic literature get the fruits of it.
Almost everyone we know homeschools (San Diego), and all of their kids are proficient readers. My second grader read over 5000 pages last year, my kindergartener read 187 picture books. Not to mention I read them 497 books out loud plus the New Testament and Book of Mormon for CFM. Both kids were required to take astandardized test higher than their grade level because they got 100% percent the for their grade.
One of our friends has an eighth grader who is proficient in Shakespeare and just got 3 college credits for it because she's read it for the last four years as part of their homeschool curriculum.

@@christophertolman7023Yes, students need to be challenged, but why do we so easily accept that government should be the ones to run the schools? I’ve had my kids enrolled in public, charter, homeschool and private at various times in their lives. I have also been a teacher. I truly believe that public school has become a toxic environment for our kids. I agree that homeschool can be a bit of a challenge, but that doesn’t mean you let kids play video games all day. What a joke.

@@christophertolman7023 Homeschoolers who are sitting home playing video games are NOT being homeschooled! Parents who decide to homeschool need to be aware of the commitment it takes to do this. I’m so glad I put my kids in a classical education charter school. Most of their classmates are devoted Catholics or members of the Church, and many are other Christians. Classical literature is religious by default, and the school can teach it in the name of classical education, but they teach excellent morals, and there is also a ton of Christ in allegory form. But the teachers aren’t promoting any one morality other than general honesty, friendship, etc., so they get away with it. And they are so strict, but kind.

Excellent episode! Thank you! I am a public school teacher in suburban Salt Lake City. I have been teaching for 25 years and am almost ready to retire. I completely agree with you about what is going on in the public schools. It's craziness. Boys cannot be girls and girls cannot be boys! I refuse to use the "preferred pronouns." I won't go along with the absurdity in my classroom, but it is getting harder and harder to say no, although I will continue to do so until I retire. My youngest son is a student at BYU Idaho and he is living in "campus approved" housing filled with BYU Idaho students and one of his MALE roommates wears a dress! I saw this coming YEARS ago and started homeschooling my kids from the beginning (now 4th, 2nd & Preschool).
I "mourned" the loss of their public school experience because my husband and I both had such a great experience, and did well. But we were committed.
We have a community with many families of many faiths and the same values. This year, only ONE family in our ward is still at public school (our ward is predominantly a young family ward with K-12 kids). Even the middle & high school kids have slowly left the system since 2020.
It's not even about academics in schools anymore. Everyone should check their county's statistics for education- they're abysmal at best.
The county I grew up in (wealthy family area) predicted that by 2028, only 8% of students will be proficient in Reading, and Math at graduation. 8%!!! What are these kids learning for 13 years in school? An 8% guarantee after 13 years is just unacceptable.
It's not just about academics either. Statistically, a child's peers have more influence than their family (Hold On To Your Kids by Gabor Mate). Do you trust their friends parents to raise them how you would? We can't send our kids to be educated in Rome and be disappointed when they come home Roman.

And students who listen to mind poison for 6-8 hours a day.

We want every branch of science taught in this place that is taught in the world. But our favorite study is that branch which particularly belongs to the Elders (and Sisters, according to President Nelson) of Israel-namely, theology. Every Elder (and Sister) should become a profound theologian-should understand this branch better than all the world." One of the most disheartening and isolating parts of all of this is the realization that while we as a people should know and recognize truth clearly, many do not. I’m a firm believer that if we take “Come Follow Me” and President Nelson’s talks seriously, we will have discernment through each book of scripture. Each one has vital truths and clues for recognizing secret combinations and idols of our own time. The phenomenon you talked about in the culture is also prevalent in our church meetings. (Thanks to voices like both of yours we are not completely disillusioned, so thank you) - At church if you are promoting woke theories and ideologies in talks, lessons, etc. It is not only acceptable, but there is an attitude of virtue and “nuance” around it. If, however, you try to defend the family proclamation, or give a comment countering the narrative that we are the most racist nation, or that Christopher Columbus was evil, or that we should fly the pride flag in the name of love….then you are being, “political in church, extreme, or not a peacemaker.” And quite frankly even defending the Proclamation brings a spirit of contention, so it is better to be muted and isolated it feels like.

The RS president took me aside after the meeting and let me know not to bring the Proclamation up again because that would offend some of the sisters present, as they had gay and lesbian children and thus this was an offense to them. After I taught that lesson, the RS president never included me on the visits to sisters we as a presidency made.

She happened to walk away from the meeting for whatever reason I don’t know and walked where her kindergarten was and saw what they were presenting to him promptly. The computer off told him he could go outside and play with his brothers, she has seven children, and, got a hold of the school and said that she was done and that they were not participating in whatever the school system had to offer for the remote learning. She is since been to the conference in Texas for homeschooling and gets information from the homeschooling, legal defense league.

“It is a greater sin to take offense then it is to give offense.”
Thank you! That puts into words so well the idea I’ve been trying to convey in conversations for years.
Everyone has the right to be offensive. But does that make it right to be?
Are we responsible to ensure that other people are not sinning as a reaction to our actions?
No. They are responsible for themselves.
But is it right to take actions that will cause others to have feelings that cause them to sin?
Maybe. It depends. If the action will cause someone to have bad feelings, you really need to weigh out if it is important enough to do/say to take that risk.
I feel “micro-aggressions” (or the taking offense of them) are weaponized against people unjustly very often. However, all of us need to be careful about being civil and tactful in what we say. But even still we all need to, like Nephi, declare the truth and do what is right even if others are going to take it hard.
That actually brings me to the topic of modesty (I know, random tangent). But I feel like modesty has been twisted so that any discussion of modesty is a micro-aggression. The narrative right now is that teaching modesty is telling girls/women that if a boy/man has lustful thoughts because of the clothes you wear it is her fault and he is absolved of any guilt. (I have never been in a young men’s lesson where the instructor said “you know, if she is immodest, it’s ok to lust after her.” Only the exact opposite) Keep in mind that “It is a greater sin to [lust after others] then it is to [dress immodestly].” Wouldn’t wearing clothes that cause others to have lustful thoughts be the micro-aggression? You have the right to dress how you want, but does that make it right to dress in a way that will cause others to feel feelings that lead to sin? So, similar to when it comes to saying things that might cause someone to take offense, we must ask the question of is what I am wearing so important that if it cause other to have inappropriate thoughts that lead to sin it is still important enough to wear it anyway and take that risk.
Where I can see where there are things important enough to say to take that risk of offending someone, I struggle to see when wearing immodest clothing is important enough to risk causing someone to have impure thoughts and actions.

The reason mothers have to go into the workforce is because of the way that the deep state has structured the economy. Father/men are not making the amount of money that they need to make to support a family pay a mortgage by the food and all the things that go along with that in order for the father to support the family and let the Mother’s Day home with the children which is what should happen. I am deep into family Search and as I research these families, they’re all have eight 10, 10, 12, some as many as 16 children. And I can see and doing the research that if a mother died in childbirth, a father would remarry to have somebody to raise the children. He would continue to have children with her.
Back in the 1800s fathers were able to provide for lots of children with a stay at home mom

When women started entering the workforce that changed, and salaries actually started to decrease because employers realized they did not have to pay as much. Of course there are other social and economic issues in that time period, such as very low wages for single mothers and ethnic classes, but in general a husband could support his family. We also have to get the narrative back to minimum wage is not and never was meant to be a living wage.

I am glad that Br Porter stated that our political thinking should be based on our belief in the Plan of Salvation. Too many people think that so called political choices need to have laws, such as gay marriage and transgenderism, need to be passed because people have ‘free’ agency. I have heard Elder Bednar in two settings, a video of a fireside in Mexico, and later in a fireside of the youth in our area, say at we were given our agency for one reason only. That reason is to choose Jesus Christ. He said that choosing anything else is not using our agency for the purpose that it was given to us. So it makes sense that if we must use our agency to choose to follow Christ, if we vote for people or support political causes that advocate choices that are directly opposed to the doctrines of Christ, then we are in fact choosing NOT to follow our Savior, Jesus Christ.

That behavior is 100% contrary to the narrative of the liberal left of being inclusive and not offending someone even if they are different. Politics can't fix an immoral people. The message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ found in the Book of Mormon is to individualy come unto Christ and be sanctified by His atoning blood and grace. The individual people of the United States have chosen to follow the God of this world. People must be righteous to choose just and moral policies. The U S. Is in its death throes. The Constitution will survive through a righteous remnant who will still uphold its principles, but the current government will be destroyed due to the people's wickedness. Only the Gospel of Jesus Christ can change people to vote for good government. If people are not righteous, then you get what we have today. The political scene we witness currently is just a symptom of the majority of the people rejecting Jesus Christ's commandments.

We will all be offended, it’s inevitable and we don’t need to be given the “right” to do so. Any statement or action, just is. It’s our own judgments and beliefs that cause us to suffer. It’s all within.
The key is 1. recognizing when we are triggered 2. resist the urge to lash out and instead 3. get still, long enough for the brain to transition back from the amygdala (part of the brain that's most closely associated with fear, emotions fight or fight) back to the prefrontal cortex (the part of the brain the deals with executive functioning, and logic.) 4.Observe your own internal world and reactivity, without judgment.
Once we are thinking from the rational problem solving area of the brain we can 5. get curious about ourself and the “offender”, again, with curiosity and without judgment.
This all probably sounds “woke” to most on this channel but the proof is in the pudding, as they say.
It’s been my experience that this is the end of war and internal suffering, less rumination and more empathy, love and understanding. 🙏🏼❤️

Please consider this - The founding fathers of our nation supported basic Judeo-Christian morality within school, but NO support of a specific religion. Prayer was a part of school. The 10 commandments were foundational. Education *should* contain such foundational morality. When referencing a supreme power, use the word 'Creator'.

Proverbs 6:16-19; “These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.” All the things that the Lord hates are in our nation today. Those who love the Lord work to remove things that the Lord hates from our nation.
Proverbs 17:15; “He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the Lord.” Shedding innocent blood is wicked. Those who justify other's right to shed innocent blood are also wicked by saying that it is their right to choose.
D & C 98:9-10: “Nevertheless, when the wicked rule the people mourn. Wherefore, honest men and wise men should be sought for diligently, and good men and wise men ye should observe to uphold; otherwise whatsoever is less than these cometh of evil.”

You have the higher law and the laws of man. You have the "powers that be" straining society to the point that both husband and wife had to work to keep food on the table and a roof over their head. Then you have the state raising the kids and taking God out of schools, our of our courthouses, and our of memory (for many). I am so grateful my daughter in law teaches her children at home. We have a real mess. I hope we can rectify the damage that has been done. Satan has creeped in silently unseen and unsuspected, and few saw this coming...But I really hope that the Spirit is poured out upon the heads of these kids, and help their understanding...

In the Book of Mormon we have a story that illustrates the consequences of a "woke" mindset: The story of Zeniff.

At 1:10:35 what if the BOM is a historical prophecy? I believe it is in a way. The subjects and stories included are for our day so we can recognize the same patterns of societal and spiritual deterioration that we are now experiencing. Alma (2) chose to preach the word of God so the hearts and minds of the people would change, and turn to God in repentance through faith in the Redeemer. That was how the downward cycle was interrupted.
That's where we are today: we need to turn to God and repent (individually and as a people) or the kinds of destruction described in the scriptures will befall this land. We need to petition Heaven for help.

Our church buildings sit empty all week long during the day. It seems they could be used better during the week. There are gyms, kitchens, chapels and classrooms that could be used for education at the literal drop of an announcement. I wonder what the bretheren have pondered regarding this education issue. Personally i would just prefer to fix our existing education system since it has all the resources and culture that makes being a kid in America fun. Just corrupted.

My son who was born in 1978, when in high school they’d ask him questions he would fill it out erroneously if they ask him if he was having sex, he would say yes if they ask him how often she say every day and he would come home and tell us that he was putting erroneous information on these forms he even on some form mark that he was African-American and he started getting stuff in the mail for collegesthat were predominantly African-American. He thought it was a big joke. He figured if he lied to them, he would throw off their numbers which he probably did.

This is going to sound unkind to Greg, but nobody has a right not to be offended. For anyone reading this, have you spent time on your own with the Lord yet today? The full phrase is "The philosophies of men, mingled with scripture" and Greg's title "The philosophies of men" is only one side of the coin. One side of the coin is all that any UA-camr is giving the children of men if the children of men have not given the Lord His fair share of time with the heart. His will, not mine. Great content here with Greg, but please don't forget your God first!!! May God bless you all!

The discourse is all about mingling with scripture. The point is, to learn where these philosophies come from, what they do, and how to help your family resist them by contrasting them with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I think we were clear about that.

We already know what the other side of the coin is. Your comment is very condescending, how would you know how much time any of us spend with the Lord??

@@jodie672 My point isn't to offend. Nobody has a right to not be offended as Greg and his guest pointed out, but everybody has a responsibility to not take offense even if it is given. In my case, I'm not looking to offend, but rather to point out that any podcast pales in comparison to spending time with the Lord in Scripture. I had to learn this the hard way, and if you didn't and already spend the time necessary alone with the Lord to know what I'm talking about then this shouldn't be offensive or condescending at all. Greg missed my point. The philosophies of men mingled with scripture isn't a good thing. That is quite literally the opposite of what I'm talking about which is spending time alone with the Lord in quiet contemplation, and not allowing UA-cam videos and podcasts to take the place of spending time with the Lord in that manner.

@@CwicShow Thanks. You proved my point. The philosophies of men mingled with scripture is not really a good thing. The philosophies from God delivered personally through private and quiet study, alone with the Lord, learning through personal revelation by the power of the Holy Ghost is a much better way to learn. You have great content, but my comment is directed at reminding people to not listen solely to UA-cam videos and podcasts and think that they'll have the same experience as personal scripture study. Most people don't have time to listen to shows like yours AND read their scriptures. Since I never hear you remind people to spend time with the Lord in the scriptures, and because I myself got caught up in listening to podcasts and shows like yours, thinking that I was "feasting" but was mostly just scratching my itchy ears with the philosophies of men mingled with scripture, I figured I'd project my experience and remind others to not fall into the same trap as I did and miss the other side of the coin; personal revelation.
