Isn't it ironic that so many years later people are still talking about how unironic this song is?

What gets me is they always act like they're the first to realize it. 😀 I specifically remember reading an article at the time of release where an English teacher bitched about it.

Throughout the 90's and half of the 00's any time this song came on anywhere in the world, every douchebag know-it-all within earshot would stand up and proudly announce that none of these examples are actually irony.
Millions of people beat you to it by over 25 years, Alex.

Funny you say that, Forgiven was always my favorite and back then, I saw her do it live and she was doing this spinning dance while singing (and not missing a note!) and it was like she was in trance. Magical! Her new album is the best thing she's done since JLP. The song "Nemesis" is particularly haunting.

Oh she still is, every once in a while she pops her head up and gives a crazy dynamic performance then poof. Must be a Canadian thing because Amanda Marshall has been doing the same thing for over 2 decades.
Ran the table, multiple multiple hits, then POOF gone for over a decade. Then she shows up unannounced at a Tragically Hip concert in Trenton Ontario on a Canada Day, and asks the Promoter, mind if I do a set. Damn right you can, blew the place up, then disappeared for 5 more years. Wash Rinse Repeat. I love it, they just show up and still have the talent to mesmerize you.

The funniest part about the video is that she was at a gas station when it started, and it ended with her running out of gas. To chime in with my fellow Alanis fans, she's extraordinarily raw & powerful & fragile all at the same time. It was refreshing to to hear back then & it's even more refreshing to hear now. I highly doubt you'll find a song of Alanis's that you don't like. 💙 from Texas!

I agree with everyone in the comments you really should review her whole album jagged little pill you won't be disappointed. Uninvited, hand in my pocket, forgiven the list goes on and on. I'm 43 and i will most definitely rock out to this album till the day i die. And i loved how you paused it to analyze every lyric normally that would annoy the crap out of me lol but not with your videos i actually quite enjoy it when you do that to be honest😀 Edit: also if you haven't reacted to metallica and Miley cyrus nothing else matters or mileys cover of zombie by the cranberries you should do it like i will be honest i love miley but i thought in all honesty it wasn't gonna be that good but she blew me away with this. Like i know she had vocal surgery but damn that girl has an amazing voice. And when her and james voices mesh together it's like so good. I've always been a miley fan but for some reason when i saw her and metallica doing one of their songs together i never thought in a million years it would happen. I just hope she does more rock songs. Her new album is fire. And the song nightcrawling she did with billy idol whoo! One of my favs and also the song she did with joan jett is just so good. There are also a few tear jerkers on the album as well ngl. Have a dope ass day or night everyone✌💜

an Irish comedian called Ed Byrne famously did an entire routine in the 90s about how nothing she claims in the song to be Ironic is ironic (they were all just unfortunate)....its absolutely hilarious! That said, its still a great song though, and jagged little pill is still a classic album and has aged pretty well

You talk about the ironies, several years ago, Alanis re-did this song in a parody version with James Corden with the 'ironies' updated for the time, and one of the lines they sing is "It's like singing 'ironic' and there are no ironies"

About the "ironic" I would propose since it's a song the question is not if what you literally hear is ironic but what the singer has in mind decides if it's ironic. So to me it's up to us to see the surrounding story that carries the irony. e.g. if the one thing you use to proof to your self you are high class actually proves you are living next to a barn that is ironic, aka fly in the chardonnay glass… and so on.

Tell me that if you were not 16-25 when this video came out you would not be like _"I want her! Yep, for a girlfriend, I want someone just like her. She is singing about tragedy after tragedy with a smile, tossing hats at people (herself), hanging out the window, laughing and eating chips while talking about life blowing up in your face...yep, I am on a mission to find someone just like this chick."_ Not even bc she is insanely beautiful, but she was just so cool. Then she sold 33 Million Records/Cassettes/CD's at $20 a pop while selling 193 shows at $45-$9000 per ticket and she had the audacity to actually be happy which reflected in her songs...and that was the end. Still love her though. '90s music is up there with '67-78. So many great artists.

Depending who you talk to Rain on your wedding day could be a good thing. My family considers it a good sign of things to come, it's like if no where in the forecast do they call for rain but then it rains it's like God himself finding your wedding so Heaven weeps. It rained at my one uncles wedding, they stayed married until she died almost 30 years later

Yeah, since the song came out almost 30 years ago everybody knows the verses are not ironic. The irony is the song called Ironic has no irony in it :) Still a blast though!
React to the whole album, its a masterpiece and a staple of 90`s music.

I was a college student at the time when this song came out, and all those dudes who tried to tell me this song was not actually ironic were middle-aged NYT reader, Seinfeld watchers. I was like… doesn’t everybody including her knows it? It is just a mood of a youth put onto words. It’s sad to see people who cannot read the air but just try to read into little things with their narrow intelligence being trapped by definitions.

Thanks, Alex - yep, it's been said many times that the situations she quotes are not exactly "ironic" - but more "coincidental" - but if you can ignore the technicality of the use of the word "ironic" - it's still a great song!

I didn't read ALL the comments. But maybe because people are to young or didn't remember or care to say, is that this song was banned from radio after 9/11. For the man who " Waited his whole damn life to take that flight, and as the plane crashed down , he thought , well isn't this nice" lyric.

I've heard people point out that the statements in the song aren't technically ironic, but I would like to know what are they actually considered then? Even though all the scenarios may not have fit the literary definitions of irony, our modern culture has a slightly different common perception of what ironic means. What eventually always happens over time is that definitions get changed or extras added based on popular understanding and usage. Even words that technically are not real words become real if people use them enough.

Winning the lottery and dying the next day is Ironic because of it being such a epic life change moment of life followed by dying the next day and never getting to use any of it. It's ironic that the win happened right the day before his life ended.

I never cared how ironic or not the lyrics were. All that mattered is that I sang along with it sooooo many times in my car, and it felt good. The words were good. They felt right and relatable. It's pretty much about how life can suck. Who cares about the technicality of a label, right? When a song is good, nothing else matters :)
