Die Hard & Die Hard With A Vengeance...my childhood right there. Infact Bruce Willis in Die Hard With A Vengeance looked AND acted almost exactly like my father at the time that it made sense why I liked him even more. So a heroic figure in a action movie resembled my hero in real life. Die Hard 2: Die Harder was fun but just felt sort of there (looking at the original Trilogy), it was entertaining but really just to show how badass John McLane STILL is. Die Hard With A Vengeance took FULL advantage of New York City, so NYC felt like a character. His (forced by Simon) partner Zeus (Samuel L. Jackson) was the perfect John-like 'sidekick' which added plenty more to the movie and even had Simon Gruber as the perfect Die Hard villain next to Hans. Live Free or Die Hard comes along with a PG-13 rating but then surprised me at how enjoyable it was for a "modern Die Hard", with technology cleverly as it's theme. THEN A Good Day to Die Hard comes out of nowhere JUST to lure in fans that DIDN'T want Die Hard to be rated PG-13 with an R-RATING...a complete waste of effort all around on that movie. To the point I don't even want to include it in the series. Die Hard is definitely one of the most nostalgic action movies EVER MADE. Just like how one my most nostalgic video games would be Die Hard Trilogy on PS1...infact that game was so fun it made me buy the movies on VHS which then became my favorite action films (1 & 3). Around that time I KEPT seeing DHWaV previews before other movies in theaters and wanted to see it SO BAD...I saw a lot of R Rated movies when I was a kid in theaters, but that one I sadly didn't...but when I DID buy the VHS, I watched it religiously. I knew every line, every moment, that movie is basically in my blood now as THE action movie of my childhood. I would even say Terminator and Judgement Day but I would consider those Sci-Fi movies not just Action so DIE HARD (1 & 3 equally) was my action movie, while Terminator (1 & 2) was my sci-fi movie, as Dawn of the Dead (1978) was my horror movie. Those movies right there basically symbolize my childhood obssessions. Yet even today I can't kill an insect without feeling bad about it (unless its a mosquito, tick or flea). I looooved violent movies and games, because it's all fantasy, I look at the World around us today falling apart rapidly with violence on the streets, violence in schools, violence across the World with myself just asking "WHY!?". So when they blame violent movies and games, it's hard to agree when I watched and played it ALL THE TIME and killing my friends in Mortal Kombat, but yet I find every living species beautiful and important. Back onto Die Hard though...this movie fucking rocks. There IS NO COMPARISSON. It stands it's ground and nothing will ever be able to top this no matter HOW much cgi or effects you throw at is, this just IS what it IS, which is a masterpiece.
the greates thing about this movie is the script. Everything happens for a reason. Every event, as meaningless as it seems to be at first has a payoff later on. To give an example, when John and Holly are arguing after they met again, a couple breaks into the room about to fuck. A couple of scenes later, when the terrorists arrive, they open the room next to where John is hiding and get distracted by this couple fucking which allow John to escape. And fucking EVERYTHING is like that. Another example, Holly has changed her last name (which at first seems to be like a way to show how appart she and John are), and she's pissed at John, so she flips the picture she has of him in her study. Those two seemingly meaningless things are the things that keep the fact that she's John's wife hidden for so long from Alan Rickman. Seriously, this movie is fucking genious.
+Bruce Wayne Totally agree with your ranking system. Maybe 2.5/10 for A Good Day to Die Hard. I'm at the point where I believe it's not even part of canon. I bought 1-4 on blu-ray the other day. I'll be satisfied if I never see 5 again.
Noah McDonald oh so you like more part 3? I mean in the rotten score it’s lower than the part 1 and 2. Anyways die hard 4 was a great movie for the franchise but I wish it was rated r theatrical
What made Die Hard even more special is that it was totally unexpected. Bruce Willis at the time was just that guy from a t.v.show called Moonlighting. Not exactly a show that teenage boys watched. Like Jeremy said Action movies were already defined by the likes of Arnold and Stallone at the time so to hear that this guy was in one your first reaction was one of "HUH?" To say that he pulled it off would be an understatement. Good story.Great Action. A little humor thrown in. It was a movie came along at the right time.
I love the fact that this was Alan Rickman's first big roll! Seriously this man had never done this before and he turned in a performance that many, many actors could never have dreamed!
My absolute favorite part of Die Hard was near the end, when Gruber repeats that catchphrase back to McClane(You know which part). I can't choose of a favorite protagonist, but Gruber was definitely one of my favorite villains. Speaking of kinda old action flicks, I'd really like to see you do a review of Schwarzenegger's Last Action Hero. I watched it yesterday and was really surprised at how good it was.
One time in school the teacher let us watch a movie as along as it was a Christmas movie. I wanted to watch Die Hard and the teacher was like "Die Hard's not a Christmas movie". Thanks Jeremy for confirming this.
Watched it a week ago for the first time, it was suprised me how even though it was made over 20 years ago. It is the best movie I have seen, just perfect!!
Best Christmas movie, and as another review said what makes this guy great is that he is vulnerable, Bruce is scared he hesitates jumping off the building his feet get cut up white stepping on glass. he gets hurt!!! and with every succeeding movie John becomes a superman leaps tall buildings goes through glass and NEVER gets a paper cut He becomes less interesting.
You nailed it Jeremy. This is, without a doubt, one of the absolute best action pictures of all time. It holds up extremely well, and is still one of my go to movies when I really need a fix. My only point of contention is what you said about Sgt. Al Powell being his only support. What about Argyle? He helps save the day. "We got everything you need: CD, CB, TV, VHS..." What, not even an honorable mention? He was the man.
I had to watch this again because Alan Rickman. One of the first movies I saw him in at a young age admittedly but man, he was one of my favorite characters and then became one of my favorite actors. R.I.P. to one of the greats.
Die Hard: Amazing movie! Hope they make a sequel! Die Hard 2: It's kind of similar to the original... Not as good, but I enjoyed it well enough. Die Hard 3: Amazing comeback! This has to be my favourite movie-trilo-- Die Hard 4: Okay, it seems as it if will be forced and... OH MY GOD IT BLEW ALL MY EXPECTATIONS TO HELL! Good job! Awesome return for Johnny-boy, the second best cowboy ever put on screen!
Terry Burns Which had a great script as opposed to 5. Also, watch Speed. Keanu doesn't really get hurt until the climactic fight w/ the villain. Even then, it was just a few bumps on the head.
+jp3813 It was simple bits like when he was sitting down pulling bits of broken glass out of his feet. No other action film shows actual and probable injuries that occur from gong through glass.. lol how many times have we that in films and they come away unscathed.
+Gazza660 LOL, really? I liked Olympus Has Fallen quite a lot and thought it was a way better Die Hard than the actual Die Hard that year. But Die Hard With a Vengeance is pretty great. And The Last Boy Scout is quite possibly the second best "Die Hard" ever made.
+Lesley Harrys well dude I mean to the die hard series as a whole! I loved die hard 2 and 3. Die hard 4 was okay and well I've heard Die Hard 5 is a terrible movie but I'll need to watch it to find out.
I don't consider any of the Die Hard sequels to be cannon to this awesome, holy action-packed movie. All of those sequels I just consider 'what-if' stories. Kinda like fanfiction that doesn't improve or continue the story. Die Hard ended with John McClain killing all of the bad guys, getting back with his wife, and living happily-ever-after. Nothing else happens after that. Nothing! Said and done with!
Die Hard wasn't just a fantastic action movie, it completely changed the genre; instead of an invincible hero with muscles upon muscles, we had an Average Joe with a badge. Casting Bruce Willis was a genius move; Stallone or Schwarzenegger would not have been able to pull the role off as written.
Hey Jeremy, you need to do more classics reviews, still we are waiting for the one of Back to the Future, and I'm dying to see you make a review on Indiana Jones trilogy (yes the TRILOGY), and Matrix... at least Matrix 1, please take sometime for doing those reviews XD.
playerselite42 I will say that is VERY rare to hear the Die Hard series rated like that but it is afterall an opinion. For me growing up with Die Hard trilogy (including the game with that exact title Die Hard Trilogy) my ratings would be something like this: Die Hard: 10/10 Die Hard 2: Die Harder: 7/10 Die Hard With A Vengeance: 10/10 Live Free or Die Hard: 7/10 A Good Day to Die Hard: 3/10
Die Hard: Awesometacular!! Die Hard 2: good time no alcohol required Die Hard with a Vengeance: worth buying on Blu-ray Live Free or Die Hard: Good time no alcohol required
Dude! I remember when I asked you to review this movie and you responded: "How can ONE not like Die Hard?!?!". 2 things to say: Good response! And thanks for finally reviewing this movie! Can't wait for the rest! :D
Yes I have seen it. Loved it. One of my favorite movies and agree it is endearing and many have tried to duplicate it in one way or another. And if you are listening Hollywood, don't remake it. Just keep reaping from DVD sales and rentals. Its perfect.
Robin from TDKR. Brave and kindhearted. I don't necessarily know if you can count him as a protagonist, but he played a big part. Maybe the dude from District 9? Possibly even the alien.
I'd probably have to say my favorite protagonist in any film would have to be the T-800 Arnold played in Terminator 2. He was a robot soldier with one initial measure to fulfill the survival of John Conner. However, through the course of the film he not only protected John Conner, he attained a level of humanity, and ultimately sacrificed himself for sake of humanity. On another level it was amazing seeing a character transform from a antagonist into a protagonist in the same film series.
It also states that certain films appear in Jeremy's top 10 lists!! Inception for example has Jeremy in it's list of accolades!! Jeremy, you're almost big time baby!!
I'm one of the two people who didn't know anything about this movie XD So thanks for making the review just for me and a couple of other people, Jeremy. You're awesome.
Agree with you and i love how mcclain is completely manky and in his feet in this movie yet still looks incredibly cool..Has there been a protagonist since that looks that beat up for the WHOLE movie??
My favorite protagonist is a tie between Luke Skywalker and Batman from Mask of the Phantasm. I know Luke Skywalker is also the Joker in MOTP but they have been my two favorites since I was a kid and they still hold up as great protagonists today. Second place goes to Toshiro Mifune in Sanjuro.
Hi Jeremy, I've seen everyone of your episodes and there just Awesometacular. But you should start doing reviews on actors. I know you like a bunch of them so it would be good for your channel.
Hi Jeremy Good review, I have seen this movie countless times and it is still a classic. My favourite protagonist will always be Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Regards Gerann
I watch the first Die Hard film more regularly now and it is an AWESOME movie. I hope Mr. Ebert has second thoughts if he watches your review, his review he gave back in '88 giving it a mere 2 stars which is a stab in the back really to this film!
I was going to except i didn't think people would get it :) I have been saying ever since i read watchman that rorschach would serve a greater good if he became a villain in the batman universe. they are very much alike in that they both have a code but the one key difference that makes them so different is where they draw that line. batman won't kill to save gotham but rorchach would. yet batman would let something small go unpunished if he thought it would serve a greater good, rorchach won't
Can't narrow it down to 1, so I'll just give you my top 10 in no particular order: Aladdin Iron Man Spider-Man Nicholas Angel (Hot Fuzz) Django Freeman Joe (Looper) Chili Palmer (Get Shorty, Be Cool) The Bride (Kill Bill) John Connor (Terminator Series) John Shaft (Roundtree version)
Best music: Les MIserables (People can quibble about the grating talking head shots of Jackman and Hathaway, but barring those instances almost every musical performance felt organic and vital.
Favorite protag has got to be Malcolm Reynolds from Serenity. Alternatively; Bill Pardy from Slither. I just like it when movies have a pragmatic average joe for the hero and Nathan Fillion does that role perfectly.
John McClane. Greatest action movie character of all time. He's become such an icon to me that I am perfectly fine with Die Hard 4 & 5 being so over the top. He was superman to me when I was a kid. Still is in a lot of ways. Also, Indiana Jones. Also, James Bond. The Trifecta. Probably why I love the Uncharted games so much. Nathan Drake is like John McClane and Indiana Jones had a baby.
I just love this movie (and the third one too). And Bruce Willis is one of my favourite actors: he is badass, funny and yet very human (watch the Sixth sense or Unbreakable, it will convice you)
So pumped up for the new die hard movie. It better be rated R. If you ever seen the last die hard movie. Watch the un cut version. More better movie and it's the one version they should have made into theaters.
RIP Alan Rickman 1946-2016
"Happy trails, Hans!"
Hans Gruber was Rickman's gold mine in my opinion.

That sucks that noeone even cared it's all David bowie but no Allen rickman.

You do a great yippi ki-yay impression, great review.
I watch this movie every year on Christmas Eve.
Hi Jeremy
Good review, I have seen this movie countless times and it is still a classic. My favourite protagonist will always be Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Regards
Gerann
John McClane is my hero. Die Hard being #4 of my top 5 All time favorites. Couldn't wait to see this review. Good job Jeremy!
Can't narrow it down to 1, so I'll just give you my top 10 in no particular order:
Aladdin
Iron Man
Spider-Man
Nicholas Angel (Hot Fuzz)
Django Freeman
Joe (Looper)
Chili Palmer (Get Shorty, Be Cool)
The Bride (Kill Bill)
John Connor (Terminator Series)
John Shaft (Roundtree version)
Hell yeah! My favourite Die Hard and my favourite action movie of ALL TIME! Love this film.
DIe Hard is my favourite movie of all time forever
I did watch Die Hard one Christmas. It is an awesome Christmas movie. Favorite action movie ever.
Jeremy, have you seen the film Hard Boiled? It was one of Woo's best, aside from The Killer and A Better Tomorrow. Whats your opinion?
Best music: Les MIserables (People can quibble about the grating talking head shots of Jackman and Hathaway, but barring those instances almost every musical performance felt organic and vital.
Yep. Watched this for the first time in 2015. Incredible - one of the best action movies I've ever seen.
Favorite protag has got to be Malcolm Reynolds from Serenity. Alternatively; Bill Pardy from Slither. I just like it when movies have a pragmatic average joe for the hero and Nathan Fillion does that role perfectly.
Hopefully. My predictions will be:
Die Hard 2: Buy It On Blu-Ray
Die Hard 3: Awesometacular
Die Hard 4: Buy It On Blu-Ray, or Awesometacular
John McClane. Greatest action movie character of all time. He's become such an icon to me that I am perfectly fine with Die Hard 4 & 5 being so over the top. He was superman to me when I was a kid. Still is in a lot of ways. Also, Indiana Jones. Also, James Bond. The Trifecta. Probably why I love the Uncharted games so much. Nathan Drake is like John McClane and Indiana Jones had a baby.
my fav character- Count Olaf (jim carrey) - Lemony sniket a series of unfortunate events, it would be cool to hear ur perpective of this amazing movie
Just saw at AMC
john maclane and seth gecko (from dusk till dawn), are two of my favorite badass characters ever put on screen
YES that Bruce Willis impression was fantastic. Thank you sir.
Jeremy's Bruce Willis is perfect!
