All so confusing - just saw a video on Theragun saying you can use gently on front and back of Hands - now you have just said you can’t! so many people on social media with one saying do this and another saying no do that 😏 easy to just listen to what works for you
Thank you the two most important and unique information most don't know is that we need 48 hours between sessions and to avoid higher frequencyies if we are thin..
What extremely helpful information this is. I'm just thinking of all the people who order these massage guns, and use them without knowledge of what to do and what not to do. That's scary.
I love the research work that you've done leading to filming this video. Thank you for making all the information available to us and easy to understand. Much appreciated ! :)
This video is very helpful. I’m a ballet teacher, and I suggest my students use massage guns for their leg muscles, but the word I seem to use most often in my teaching, as well as in stretching or massage gun use is, gently. Thank you for this extremely useful information.
I found this very useful and informative. Thanks Also, I have had the good fortune of being treated by sevaral physio and rehab people from SA and they have been great. Your training over there must be awesome. It stands out here in New Zealand
Thank you so much. I have done everything wrong today when I bought my massage gun. I mostly hoped to deal with plantar fascitis, but listening to you, I better return it. I had schock wave therapy, which is supposed to help with this condition (it did not but I thought maybe I did not have enough?), so I bought the massage gun... I had every therapy in the world and nothing helps.
I would also check out the video about planter fasciitis (on this channel), I found it really useful, about 6 months ago I started to experience it (I have always played football) so had an ok fitness baseline but started getting into running which caused carnage, luckily I caught it early before it developed, gave it time to recovery and believe using some of the techniques explained have prevented/minimised it going forwards, one thing to bare in mind is it’s one of those injury’s where the pain point isn’t the cause of the issue, just the part that suffers.

thank you for this comprehensive video My grandmother is 90+ years of age. She has a really bad scoliosis. Bed time is our worst nightmare; she can barely sleep mostly due to the pain she endures at her right lower back. She always wants somebody to massage her lower back or simply her calf muscles. Who does have the energy to massage someone 8 hours a day at night? So I'm considering to use it on her. it's simply to enable her to sleep without us getting annoyed every time she asks for a massage. The questions are; 1.) is it okay to use it on elderly on a daily basis? we might use it at low frequencies just so she can feel the massage and be able to sleep at night 2.) is it a good idea to use it ON HER RIGHT LOWER BACK ; the part where the scoliosis takes place? hope this questions find you well. good luck for the channel!
For lower back pain, use massage gun on upper gluteus muscles, there are many videos on lower back pain and hips, do check them out. Make thorough points, do more research on it then do a light test. Normally on me , i am young, 5 -7 minutes gentle use will be more than enough, so for your grandmother u can reduce the time But before taking any advice do check out UA-cam videos, and also consult your doctor. Hope this help, good bye.
Use one with lower travel. Ie amplitude. Amplitude is how much distance the gun rod goes up and down. Most smaller ones are 10mm. But there are guns which also move 16mm in and out. Smaller amplitude gives lesser discomfort.
Both my sister and I have a lot of pain in our feet especially after a day on our feet. She loved her Theragun to relieve her pain and bought me one for Xmas. Now I am worried to use it on the so,es of my feet.
just watched this video which is very helpful and contradicts a lot of others i've watched where they say use it on your feet etc. i really don't feel confident in using it so will be sending it back and stick to a sport massage instead!
Great instructional video. I think all these massage guns should include a good instructional video or app for use. Anything for Apple watches with Apple tv? Would be a great idea for apple.
I am currently treating a middle-aged man who developed hematuria and proteinuria after using a massage gun. He had no known medical condition prior to usage. It should be used with serious caution.
I used my massage gun on my whole head and face and neck and it was a very pleasurable feeling and I almost can describe it as a Face-and Head-Gasm. That's of course while using it gently and with the sponge massage head. I doubt that this could be negative but very relaxing. But maybe some people could not enjoy it or support it.
With regard to chronic conditions that cause cells to be damaged more easily, I think another one is Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, which I have. So thanks for helping me to realise that I shouldn't be using one! Very useful video
Were you looking it up on your computer or did you buy online? I find stuff I’ve been looking up pops up on my UA-cam, it seems UA-cam is reading my mind but I think it’s bc of information sharing on internet. It’s only a thought.
That contraindication is not from any specific study on massage guns because there really isn't enough research available yet - I just listed examples of conditions that can make people vulnerable to getting cell damage more easily because of the systemic effect on the body. And the reason I did that was because there is enough evidence that massage guns can cause cell damage even in healthy individuals who don't have a systemic condition. The only study so far to show systemic conditions may be a problem is the one that reported a case of rhabdomyolysis in a person with iron deficiency: Chen, J., et al. (2021). "Rhabdomyolysis after the use of percussion massage gun: a case report." Physical Therapy 101(1): pzaa199. You can find all the listed studies in the description - 3 years ago when I made my first video on this subject none of this was yet available, so I hope we will be able to get more direct science backed advice in another 3 from now. But for now, I feel the safest approach is to combined the research from massage guns with evidence from other fields.
Hi thank you soo much for that info, do you have any videos how to use or benefit without agrivate the sciatic nerve running from my foot to my sitting bone Or better question how do i know if i aggrivate a nerve?
Here's how you can decide - Signs that you are aggravating the nerve include: 1. Tingling (or funny sensations) or pain increases while you are using it 2. Or the symptoms increase in the 24 hours after using it If neither of this happens, then it is likely OK to do.
An awesome video. Thanks for all the useful information. I got such a gun as a gift and wanted to learn more before using it. I have questions regarding the massage guns: The traps, scapula and the neck were not mentioned. I am getting very stiff in this area. Is it safe to use it there? How long after a heavy training can I use the message gun on the trained area?
What are your thoughts about the vibrating plates? Thanks I have gastroparesis and i started using it for digestive issues when i can’t go out for a walk. Also i was thinking of getting a massage gun to massage my stomach to help gut motility but I was afraid of damaging my stomach.
Vibration plates can be very useful to help build muscle. I don't think a massage gun will help your gut. The best way to stimulate and aid gut movement is actually through deep breathing exercises. Our gut activity is regulated by our sympathetic nervous system which controls our fight or flight (stress) reaction. If you're experiencing a high-stress situation, your body activates your fight or flight response which channels blood away from your gut and decreases its activity in favour of sending blood to the muscles and getting them ready to run away or fight if needed. If you do deep abdominal breathing, it calms your body's stress reaction down and as it reduces it then increases blood flow to the gut and increases the activity.
Do you mean under the foot e.g. plantar fascia? Yes, you can. Top of foot is not good idea. You can also find more advice about plantar fasciitis here: ua-cam.com/play/PLkRW4ITRa6bD1cDrp0MK5hlWaam8nd0d1.html
I would be cautious because chronic conditions like CKD may make your cells in your body more vulnerable to the strong percussions of the gun. So if you do use it, usa a very light setting but also perhaps check with your doctor before using it.
