  • Teardown of Cisco Cable TV EGC GAN node and drop amplifier. Electronic Gain Control (EGC) technology and GaN (Gallium Nitride) monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs}. These are modern versions running on fiber networks. These small amplifiers are used in houses where it is not practical to use a receiving antenna to get the signal from the broadcast headend transmitter. They are also called a "service drop". Historically CATV is short for Community Antenna TV. A large receiving antenna was used and a cable connection ran out to every house in the neighborhood. Each house had one of these amplifiers. The return path amplifier can also send some of the signal back into the line to keep the signal good enough for the next house. In Denmark, the large receiving antennas has mostly been substituted with fiber connections.

How many do even use a cable TV connection anymore? I use a 5G router for internet connection.

Here in Sweden Internet via cable is still quite common for apartment buildings and so on. All xDSL has basically been replaced by FTTH or 4G/5G.

Here in the Netherlands cable is the norm. I have a standard DOCSIS 3.1 connection, 1200 Mbps down, 100 Mbps up, difficult to match with 5G (with the current network)

@@IvanStepaniuk Everything built in recent years is FTTH or Ethernet. But many homes received CATV in the 80-90’s so that’s the reason for the big installation base I guess.

In the US I got rid of cable 10 years ago. Here in Vietnam it's all WDM FTTH and cheap! I had actually never seen single fiber duplex coms until here 7 years ago.

Really cool teardown! Technology is so cool and moves so fast. Crazy what they stuff in there and that is old, relatively tech wise anyway. But not really that old...

Indeed. Discarded equipment is younger and younger, when it end up on my table.
