Ukrainian Ex-Convicts Are Ready To Fight for Ukraine’s Freedom: From Prison to Frontline

  • In May, President Zelenskyy signed a bill allowing convicts to join the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Currently, various ‘Brigades’ are hurrying to recruit potential fighters from prisons across the country. Inmates are highly motivated and well disciplined, making them perfectly suited to become soldiers. But how is this different from the notorious Russian “Storm Z” or PMC Wagner, who also recruited prisoners, and why are these men highly motivated?

Like taking someone else's car or house. In a democracy, people have to follow common rules of conduct (called "laws" and "regulations") set by the government. The difference with a dictatorship is that in a democracy, everyone not only has the right to participate in the election of lawmakers, but also to take part in the debate (including demonstrations) about the common rules. Nevertheless, even in a democracy, citizens do not have absolute freedom. Unfortunately, over time, some citizens forget this basic principle. Laws and regulations are decided together, and this is also true of representative democracy.

    As long as they sign up and are given actual training and equipment, I get it. Its painful, as some of them should not be back on the streets, but a deal is a deal. I can only hope that their motivation translates to after the war. I can only assume they will not be cannon fodder. A prisoner should only be given their punishment, nothing more or less. Even if they sign up for this, sending them into a death sentence would be morally wrong.

    • @GnosticAtheist
      @GnosticAtheist Місяць тому +1

      @@chocolates182 "Cannon fodder" or sacrifice troops are troops that are sent in with the clear intention that they will not return. For instance, if one knows an area is mined and troops are sent in to "find a way trough" by triggering the mine, they are it. Alternatively, sending waves of troops to be ended with the purpose of straining the enemy and no tactical goal besides that, it is also fodder. Sending people on a mission with a high chance of termination on the other hand is not fodder, if the actual goal is the success of the mission (unless the mission is to end those soldiers, that would obviously be fodder). So even if there is a 75% failrate, its not cannon fodder by definition, it depends on the reasoning of the mission, and leaders can play around with the term, making it somewhat problematic.

    Reminded me of Unit 684 of South Korea comprised of convicts,allegedly。Except that the trainees were trained under brutal and inhumane condition。 The unit's original mission was to assassinate Kim il Sung in late 60s (the grandfather of Kim Jong Un)。However,as inter-Korea relations warmed in early 70s,unit 684 became irrelevant as time passed。Until the trainees launched their mutiny against their trainers and hijacked a bus in their way to Blue House in 1971。Their mutiny crushed by the authorities in the aftermath。

    In WW2 there were similarities. The French Army ran a punishment battalion in 1930s North Africa called "Bats d' Afrique which "handled" (as in constantly brutalized) inmates who had missed their conscription callups because they were serving prison sentences, or were soldiers/ Foreign Legion members who had been caught being especially naughty.
    To everyone's surprise, most were very patriotic and quickly became very competent fighters. The only problem was they had to be kept "fully occupied" in the thick of activity at all times or they tended to drift back into their old unhelpful thought processes.
