- Johnny Marr has teamed up with the award-winning actor Maxine Peake to create a new project which sets Peake’s spoken word performances to Marr’s instrumental soundscapes. ‘The Priest’ is based upon the characters that Joe Gallagher met on the streets in the first few days after becoming homeless in Edinburgh. Gallagher wrote a diary of his experiences for the Big Issue under the pseudonym James Campbell when he first became homeless in May 2015 and continued until he found a new home in March 2016.
This short film was filmed in Manchester and features Molly Windsor in the lead role.

Johnny Marrs dramatic music, Molly Windsors air of vulnerability and Maxine Peaks melancholy Manchester accent....great combination
Maxine Peake doesn't have a Manc accent. She's from Bolton. Different accent.
Absolutely brilliant collab. Johnny Marr is the invisible genius of our time.
Dude I just love how Marr always sets the right mood in his music
Can’t stop watching this. Something almost haunting about it which keeps drawing me back.
Me to
This is the most powerfully, emotionally and psychologically resonant piece of music he’s done since how soon is now. The video and acting hits the mark and tone perfectly. It is however, ridiculous as a premise as this beautiful girl could get a live in boyfriend or a job in less than an hour and be housed with not so much as a smile. This is the struggle of men who nobody cares about, forsaken, alone, shunned and forgotten.
Molly Windsor's performance is wonderful, very poignant. The direction and the shooting are great, as are Marr's music and Peake's delivery.
Moving, poetic, ambient, Genius.
The words are actually by a rough sleepers experience called Joe Gallagher...these two nicked it .
A terrific piece of art. Music sets the tone, voice is heartfelt and video completes it. Well done to everyone involved in making this. 👍🎶🎸
I'm here because of the live set on KEXP and how johnny described this experience and how great it was to collaborate with two women that Johnny truly respects and speaks so highly of!

Electronic sounds always was a big Jhonny Marr's quality, we all are waiting for the new record.
This song gives me the shivers. Haven't felt that way for a long time.
Gorgeous tune.
Johnny Marr is consistently amazing and Molly Windsor such a mesmerising young actress.
Haunting John! cheers! USA loves ya sir Johnny
I am on my way to the Salvation Army, see if I can get something to eat.
I'm skint and I don't know a soul.
On the street, where the Sally Army is, I am approached by two guys.
"D'you want to buy any gear?" I am asked.
"What sort of gear?"
"Skag, smack ma'am."
"Nah, no thanks - it's not my thing."
"What about crack then?"
"Nah, not my thing either," I reply.
"Spice?''
"No''
"What about a drink then eh?"
"Nah," I reply. "I'm not drinking at the minute, got stuff to sort."
"What!? Are you a fuckin vicar?!"
Laughing, they make their way onwards leaving me to scrounge a bit of breakfast at the Sally Army.
The following day I am on my way to another place that provides food for homeless people, I come across the same two guys. They see me and one says to the other "Watch out, it's the priest!" They stand in a prayer stance. I look round, there is no priest.
"Arite Priest" one of the guys says to me as I make it to the doorway of the free food place. They are talking to me.
"Arite" I reply and make my way to the door in full realisation that I had been on the streets of this city for four days and I had already been tagged.
Maybe had a street name: Priest!
Sleeping rough is a dangerous thing.
People spend their nights awake.
Me, well I try not to worry too much about it.
If someone grabs me at night and kills me to death… May not be a bad thing.
Not that I would welcome it, I just don't want to think about it too much.
Guy comes along to where we are sleeping, another fucking visitor. He's about 25/30 years old, from Coatbridge and he's well 'refreshed'.
His mates have ditched him, he's missed his train home and he wants to talk.
I want to sleep. It's gonna be a long night.
Watch out! It's the priest!
I had been on the streets of this city and I don't know a soul.
Watch out! It's the priest!
"Arite there pal, what you doin' here?"
"Tryin to sleep."
"I've missed ma train n ma pals huv all fucked off n uv got naewhere tae kip…
You homeless then?"
"Yes.'' ''Yep."
"You look oot ay it," he says. "Are ye kitted up?"
"No, I am just very tired and it's after two in the morning".
"I hud a bit 'o' coke earlier on."
Oh for fuck's sake!
It's gonna be a long night...
Watch out! It's the priest!
What a fucking masterpiece!!!!!!

So true a Gem
Thanks for sharing the lyrics
These are not lyrics. It's from a diary by formerly homeless man James Campbell. www.bigissue.com/latest/story-life-less-ordinary-true-account-homelessness/
Genius!! The way Maxine Peake captures the rhythms of the music in her speech and tells the story with the video is brilliant. Look forward to seeing more from your collaboration.
The music by the last two minuets has built so slowly it catches you out how epic it has become. Marr-velous
First, listened in the radio by chance. Now can't stop myself listen over an over here..
Johnny Marr knows how to write music to fit the voice. Genius
Very nice project! Love from America. Thanks to ALL for perspective. Give to your local foodbank.
Perfectly encapsulates wandering the streets of Manchester aimlessly. Unfortunately this is day in day out for some. Sleeping rough on Oxford road as men in designer three piece suits walk on by, in and out of their well paid 9 to 5 job and still complain about increased taxes.
Great work Johnny
Evander Holiday Shall we make the poor richer or the rich poorer?
Dont come to -SF.
At first I was dubious but then it completely captivated me. Beautiful if also depressing.
Johnny Marr- the greatest Mancunian to ever grace this Earth (coming from a Leeds boy).
Mind-blowing approach...
The best track Johnny has produced since the Smiths! Amazing!
Great tune!! Johnny Marr has done it again!
majestic is not enough. The mood is special, and it gets in my bones! What is it?? Marr, you're fantastic!
BRILLIAN I'VE SHÀRED. THIS ♥️XX
This was a really nice track. Loved the vibe.
Top notch. Johnny Marr is a bone fide musical genius.
I'm enthralled. This is true art; something that makes us feel deeper. A story is told, and while the events that take place seem rather mundane, it's brilliant because underlying it all is the fact that this young girl is on the streets and each moment carries potential danger for her. I actually love that in the end nothing of major significance happens; it's the constant threat that it could. Then you take the story and lay out this wonderful, yet haunting melody; adding layers on it with each passing verse, throw in a groovy beat and excellent narration and you have a masterpiece. Absolutely brilliant.
nicely put !
Thanks dude, have a good one.
Nobody gives a fuck about your wanky interpretation of it mate
Kinda like the ending of The Sopranos

spot on
Level of homelessness in Manchester is unbelievable. Currently in the Oxford rd McDonalds watching this before work and I see them everywhere, on practically every street..there's always a few in here, smell hits you when you walk in. and it's just getting worse and worse. horrible this is the Britain we live in. don't know how they survive in this cold
clare l Cheers from USA. I live in a small town of less than 50,000 on the east coast of America and its the same here. I'm a paramedic so I interact with many homeless folks. It's heartbreaking. Take care
Yea, here in Canada, extremes of poverty and wealth are exacerbated daily.
You'd think that at this point, the widespread squalor in the supposed prosperous west would make many better-off folks at least think about fixing the homeless problem.
Oh yea, homelessness is EXPENSIVE for society. Cops, jails, shelters, soup kitchens, food banks, courts. It all adds up, and abject misery is the end product.
Outstanding in every way. The cinematography, the framing of the shots, the music (of course), the spoken story and the vibe all gel perfectly. Well done!
Johnny Marr has so much art and talent ... Surprising
Bass line is so addictive :')
Sad and Amazing
Thank u.
This is brilliant
Love Maxine Peake, JM and the whole concept. Brilliant.
this is crazily good omg
Fabulous and moving! Anything with Maxine Peake in it is likely to be good but this is superb and the voice sync with Molly Windsor (a rising star - remember her in Three Girls earlier this year) is amazing. Can't wait to see the rest of it.
lost for words a masterpiece of music and what is happening on the streets . Keep safe all ❤❤
Fantastic, don’t know how I missed this..
A cracking tune and a powerful message about life in Britain, reminds of a certain band, even if only in spirit.
About life in many cities in the world, unfortunately
Your Silent Face?

@Maxine Peake - your voice is so authentic and beautiful. I am very impressed. The whole song is unique.
Great song and an important message that this could happen to anyone ..your kids or loved ones ....government must do more and stop turning a blind eye

Superb song. Maxine Peake is outstanding. Anyone who has been unfortunate enough to sit in a doorway with nowhere to go being spat at and ridiculed will relate.
Großartig...
That guitar
It has shades of 'Walking Down Madison' to it... another Marr collaboration with the late great Kirstie McColl
Be careful girl I love it
